Sparrow Mattress Firmness and Feel

Sparrow Mattress Firmness

At Mattress Nerd, we like to rate firmness on a simple scale of 1–10, where a 10 is the absolute firmest and a 1 is softer than a sparrow’s feathers. With that, we’re putting the Nest Bedding Sparrow mattress at a medium-firm 6.

This level of firmness will appeal to most average sleepers; however, the Sparrow does come with three different firmness options: Plush Feel, Medium Feel, and Firm Feel. We recommend that heavier sleepers try out the Firm Feel and lightweight sleepers try the Plush option.

What Does the Sparrow Feel Like?

The Nest Bedding Sparrow is a hybrid mattress made from soft, cooling foam and supportive pocketed coils. As a result, the top layers of the bed feel super cooling with a plush feel. However, you won’t feel yourself “sinking” down into the mattress since its pocketed coils give it a bounce that makes it easy to move around and change positions.

Overall, the Sparrow keeps a good balance of softness and support, while keeping the entire mattress consistently cool. For firm mattress fans or heavier sleepers looking for extra solidness and durability, however, the Sparrow might feel a little bit thin.

What Sleeping Position Is the Sparrow Mattress Best For?

Body Type:Back SleepersStomach SleepersSide Sleepers
Lightweight< 130 lbs:543
Average-weight130–230 lbs:533
Heavyweight> 230 lbs:433

1 = Very poor     2 = Not good     3 = Fair     4 = Good     5 = Excellent

Back Sleepers

The best mattresses for back sleepers support the lower back and help maintain the natural “S” curve of the spine. For lightweight and average-weight back sleepers, the Sparrow’s medium firm option is ideal and does exactly this. However, while heavyweight back sleepers will find this option comfortable too, the Firm Feel option will work best.

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers need a bed that keeps unwanted pressure off of their shoulders and hips while also providing enough support. For heavyweight and average-weight side sleepers, the Sparrow’s standard firmness option will feel too soft and “sinking”. So, we recommend these side sleepers both try the Firm Feel. On the other hand, lightweight sleepers will actually find that this mattress doesn’t have enough “sink”, so we recommend the Plush Feel option.

Stomach Sleepers

The best mattresses for stomach sleepers just provide enough firmness to keep your hips from sinking down into the mattress. For lightweight stomach sleepers, the standard Sparrow should be solid enough to do this, while average-weight and heavyweight sleepers may want to up their Sparrow to the Firm Feel once again.

Combination Sleepers

Combination sleepers usually switch between a couple of positions through the night, so the best mattresses for combination sleepers are bouncy, responsive, and easy to move across. Lightweight combination sleepers shouldn’t have any issues with the Sparrow unless they’re spending most of the night on their side, and average-weight and heavyweight combination sleepers will get the most out of the Firm Feel option.

Sparrow Mattress Performance

Is the Sparrow Mattress Cooling?

The Nest Bedding Sparrow is one of the best cooling mattresses because of its cooling top layers of quilted foam and gel, plus its breathable support layers made of pocketed coils. Whether you tend to sweat during the night or sleep hot with a partner, the Sparrow gets five stars for temperature control.

Edge Support

If your bed has good edge support, then you can sit or lie on its edges without spilling onto the floor. For couples and seniors, this extra mattress space and support is especially helpful. And, since the Sparrow has pocketed coils in its support layers, you shouldn’t have any issues here.

See more: Best Mattresses For Seniors

Responsiveness

Responsive beds are bouncy and lifting, just like the Sparrow with its pocketed coils. If you’re a combination sleeper, you can expect to move around as much as you want on this bed without feeling like you have to fight against the mattress.

Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?

Unfortunately, while the Sparrow is bouncy and supportive, it lacks in motion isolation. Motion isolation is essentially how much you can feel your partner’s unwanted movement through the bed. So, if you’re a light sleeper with a partner, the Sparrow might not be for you.

Noise

Some beds made with pocketed coils can creak and create unwanted noise, especially if you’re sharing a mattress. However, the Nest Bedding Sparrow is silent.

Pain Relief

The Nest Bedding Sparrow relieves pain for back sleepers of all weights; however, lighter side sleepers have pressure build up in their shoulders and sides.

See more: Best Mattresses For Shoulder Pain

Sex

The Sparrow is one of the best mattresses for sex because it is quiet, responsive, and ultra-cooling.

Off-Gassing

Just like when buying a new car, your new mattress can come with a “new mattress smell” when you unbox it. This process is called off-gassing, and it usually takes a few days for any odors to dissipate. Fortunately, the Nest Bedding Sparrow doesn’t have a strong off-gassing smell, if any.

Durability

Hybrid mattresses, like the Nest Bedding Sparrow, that have pocketed coils are more durable and have strong edge support. This means you’ll be able to enjoy your Sparrow without sinking or deformation for longer than the average seven-year mattress lifespan.

Sparrow Mattress Construction: What’s it made of?

The Nest Bedding Sparrow mattress comes in at 12” tall, and it’s made from a high-quality, hybrid construction of pocketed coils, latex-like foam, and gel. This bed’s support layers are responsive and bouncy, and its top layers are cooling and conforming.

inside nest bedding sparrow

Layer #1: Quilted THERMIC® Cover: The Sparrow mattress cover is quilted with a stretchy fabric infused with THERMIC—a material that wicks away body heat and regulates temperature. Also, the cover’s smooth quilting keeps layers underneath it from shifting or bunching up. Lastly, the Sparrow has an inch of cooling gel memory foam that contours the body.

Layer #2: White or Blue Energex™ Foam: Below the cover, the next layer is three inches of latex-like foam that makes the Sparrow feel more bouncy but also pressure relieving. Although this layer is responsive, you can still sink down into it enough to get comfortable. And, for hot sleepers, this comfort layer is infused with cooling gel. Depending on which firmness level of the Sparrow mattress you purchase, you can get the softer blue foam or the more firm white foam.

Layer #3: SmartFlow Support Foam: Getting into the support layers, the third layer of the Sparrow is an inch of high-density foam that keeps you lifted and off of the pocketed coils below.

Layer #4: Pocketed Coils: The next support layer in the Sparrow is six inches of individually wrapped coils. These coils improve mattress breathability, and they are reinforced around the edges for better edge support. Individually wrapped coils also do a good job of responding to your body movements when you change sleep positions. Layer #5: Base Support Foam: Lastly, the bottom layer of this bed is a high-density base layer that stabilizes the coil layer above and the whole mattress.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

The Sparrow mattress comes compressed and rolled in a box. Each Nest mattress is custom-built once ordered, which takes one to three days. The total time to build, prep, and deliver the mattress to you will be around four to eight business days. You won’t pay for shipping, unless you live in Hawaii or Alaska.

Once the mattress arrives, grab a buddy and put it on the foundation you’ll be using. Then take it out of its box and plastic wrapper and wait for it to re-inflate. That will take several minutes. Any off-gassing odor (aka new mattress smell) should be gone after a day or two max.

Warranty

Your Sparrow mattress will come with a limited Lifetime warranty, meaning that it is covered for as long as you own it. Specifically, this limited warranty will cover any defects in your Sparrow’s manufacturing and indentations in the bed of over one inch.

That said, the limited Lifetime warranty does not cover any normal wear and tear or misuse of the Sparrow mattress.

Trial Period & Returns

The Sparrow mattress comes with a full sleep trial period of one year; however, Nest Bedding recommends getting used to and sleeping on your mattress for at least 30 days before requesting an exchange or refund.

Nest strongly encourages you to call them if you’re still uncomfortable after 30 days. They may suggest trying out other pillows or mattress toppers. Nest also offers a Lifetime Renewal Exchange—if you don’t like the feel of your current top layer or if it wears out, Nest will send you another top layer for free.

But, if you do end up returning your Nest mattress, you will get a full refund and the mattress will go to a charity.  Lastly, the company will come and pick it up for free.

Addressing Sparrow Mattress Complaints

  • Lack of support: Average-weight and heavyweight sleepers have both complained about the Sparrow’s lack of support. These customers have described not getting enough solidness as stomach sleepers, but finding that the next firmness upgrade for their Sparrow felt too hard. This is because, for average-weight and heavier sleeper, their hips can sink down too far on softer mattresses.
  • Poor motion isolation: Several buyers of the Nest Bedding Sparrow have complained about the mattress’s lack of motion isolation. Specifically, these complaints have come most frequently from couples who can feel their partner’s movements during the night. Since the Sparrow is a hybrid mattress, you’re more likely to feel motion through the bed’s coils than with an all-foam mattress.
  • Pressure: Regardless of weight, side sleepers have reported either too much pressure or not enough support in key areas like the shoulders and hips. Furthermore, some sleepers who found the standard Sparrow firmness option too hard also found the next softest option to be too soft. For lightweight sleepers, the Sparrow may lack “sink”, while heavier sleepers won’t feel supported.

Sparrow Mattress FAQs

Can You Flip the Sparrow Mattress?

Is the Nest Bedding Mattress Non-Toxic?

Yes. The Nest Bedding Sparrow mattress is made-to-order from organic materials in the United States. Also, the Sparrow’s construction is OEKO-Tex-certified against any harmful toxins or emissions. Lastly, the Sparrow mattress is also aired out in the Nest Bedding factory before it’s shipped, reducing any off-gassing.
