Comparison Shopping Service

Are you trying to comparison shop for a mattress but are struggling? Do you not have the time or patience to compare specs of mattresses? Let me do it for you!

Retailers intentionally make it difficult to comparison shop by using different model names and numbers at different stores. They also shroud the specs in jargon intended to confuse you. I have the industry experience to see through these tactics.

This is a FREE SERVICE. All you have to do is fill out the form to the right, and include a link to the mattress you want to comparison shop for. Ideally, this would be a mattress that you tried in the store and found to give you the correct level of comfort and support. Be sure to include the size and whether you need the mattress alone or the mattress and boxspring set. This works best with big name brands like Simmons, Sealy, and Serta, but I can try to comparison shop anything.

Again, to use it, just include either a link to the mattress, or list the model name, size, store you shopped at, and whether you need the boxspring set as well as the price you were quoted.

We purchased a bed from MattressFirm in July, 2009 and we have LOVED it. The only problem... it's a queen and we've decided we need a king! Could you advise which current mattress from the Beautyrest line would be most comparable. And if possible, where we could a good price. It's a Beautyrest Medalist, Parr Plush, 13", 980 coil count, memory foam. It appears to me Thanks!

I also don't have my original bed so I'll need advice on how to time the delivery of the Tuft and Needle so I can send the Puffy back at the same time or around the same time. Maybe I need more time with the Puffy as well, this is my first memory foam mattress.

To James Patton, I just ordered a platinum Hybrid Vanity plush from US Mattress. I tried the same mattress in Sears but was called Delilah. Its a 2017 model and sears only had a floor model queen-I want a king. I too liked the Clermont and the Gladney from Mattress Firm but bought the Black Hybrid plus Jennings but find it a little too firm. The King Vanity at US Mattress is only $1575 and feels much richer than the Clermont, Gladney, and Alcove and is alot cheaper. Bryson Plush- official Beautyrest name, Vanity Plush-Us Mattress name, Samson plush-Amazon name Just my 2 cents-a person agonizing for over a month trying to find the perfect mattress-and I finally did.

MattressNerd Says

January 12, 2018 at 11:01 am

The Keaton would likely be the closest, but again, it will be quite different. The Legend/Winward are a step up from the Keaton. Generally, hotels don't use the higher-end mattresses like the Legend collection. So the slight step down to the Keaton would be more similar.

joe Says

January 11, 2018 at 10:16 am

In that case, I've seen the Beautyrest Legend, Beautyrest Winward (at Mattress Firm) and the Beautyrest Recharge World Class Keaton Luxury Firm Mattress (at Macy's). Among those 3, could you be able to venture an educated estimate which would be closest experience to the old "sweet sleeper". Thanks for insight!

MattressNerd Says

January 11, 2018 at 9:21 am

There are at least 2 issues: 1) Hotel mattresses tend to be different from the ones available at retail. 2) A lot has changed in the past 10 years as far as materials and construction go. All I know is that the Sweet Sleeper was a Beautyrest mattress, but there will be a lot of differences between the hospitality mattresses from 10 years ago and the ones today, and even more differences between the hospitality mattresses available today and the retail mattresses available today. I can guarantee you that any mattress you buy today will be different in some ways from the "sweet sleeper." You seem to be under the impression that there is exactly one mattress out there in the world that is right for you, and I think that is misguided. So again, Simmons Beautyrest will give you a somewhat similar experience, but it will in no way be an exact match.

Dear Mattress Nerd: I've been searching the Internet for weeks now and still have not been able to find a definitive answer, and I'm hoping you can help. I slept on a "sweet sleeper" mattress at a Sheraton in Florida almost 10 years ago. I never forgot it as the one of the best sleeps and mattresses I ever experienced. I haven't been ready to buy a new mattress until now, and I would love to find the most equivalent mattress in today's market. Aside from Internet searching, I have visited MattressFirm and Macy's, but even after sampling their floor models, I still am unsure. I don't want to miss the mark on this and be stuck with a mattress that offers something different than the experience I had on the "sweet sleeper". Can you offer any suggestions on any equivalents or close proximities to the "sweet sleeper"? I would really appreciate your help!

MattressNerd Says

December 8, 2017 at 12:39 pm

The Sealy Thrilled isn't on the comparison chart because it's the same name everywhere. My charts were mainly focused on comparing different names at different places for the same mattress. I suppose I can see the benefit in adding the ones that are the same name everywhere, just to make it convenient to check prices at several different places. It's something I will look into doing. It's difficult to say how the firmness of one of the online mattresses will compare, since I haven't personally tried the Thrilled. But it has 6 inches of comfort foam over 6 inches of support foam, so if you find a medium to medium-soft firmness mattress with specs like that, it is likely similar. The Alexander Signature Medium should at least get you in the ballpark. Here's my review of them. Alexander Signature Review

Your advice is awesome. Thank you for all you're doing. My husband tried and liked the Sealy Thrilled mattress (or Thrilled Plush) at a local mattress store. While I did see it listed on the US mattress website, I don't see it listed on the Sealy comparison page above. Are there different versions? How accurate is the US mattress comfort scale rating? Also, it's an expensive mattress, and we're likely to buy inexpensive adjustable bases to help with his back and hip problems. Is there a mattress of similar comfort from one of the online companies? (we originally headed out to check out Serta vs Tomorrow Sleep but only made it to one retailer). Thank you very much.

Macy's is the only one I know of that changes their Serta names. They're generally sold under the same name everywhere. That's called the iComfort Applause elsewhere. The Sealy lineup has changed significantly this year, so you're not likely to find that exact mattress elsewhere. It'll be vaguely similar to the Cooper Mountain Cushion Firm and the ones in that row on this year's comparison chart. Hello I have enjoyed my GS Stearns Cushion Firm Pillowtop for about five years but It has sagged close to 3 inches in the middle so now Stearns & Foster is replacing it. I need help on a comparable. The mattress compares to the high end Reserve line, which does have a pillowtop (supposedly very nice hybrid comfort which I've read positive reviews on), but there is only a Luxury Firm and Plush comfort level, with the Ultra Plush rounding out the line. I don't usually like too plush and also haven't slept on an actual Firm. S&F has suggested they'll also replace with the Lux Estate line - either regular cool with pillowtop OR the Hybrid - since these come in Cushion Firm comfort level. Will I notice too much of an added stiffness going to the Reserve Luxury Firm (albeit there is a pillowtop) to make "downgrading" to the Lux Estate line to get a Cushion Firm level worthwhile?

Hi Mattress Nerd - saw you post recently over at slickdeals. Quick question which has been somewhat discussed, but want to clarify: I am looking at the Simmons Beautyrest Black "Giada" Extra firm (King size) from macys which recently went on sale for $2299 w/ boxsprings. I believe the Mattress firm/US-Mattress equivalent is the Simmons Beautyrest Black "Calista" Extra Firm. Prices were similar and both seem to be the same # of coils, but macys says 1088 coils in king and us-mattress says 1063 coils ...and mattress firm doesn't list on the website, but can order it apparently. Sears also says 1088 coills. When I tried to get Mattress firm to price match, they originally gave the same $2599 originally, $2299 with boxsprings. After some negotiation via chat, i got them down to $1725+tax. However, I am not 100% sure this is the same mattress. I know macys has some exclusive "layer" on top that does something about temperature control, but i dont buy into most of that b/c frankly you have a mattress cover + a fitted sheet over it, so that seems irrelevant. more important to me is whether the same extra firm mattress is there. I tried the Calista in Sears which is the only physical store i know of to try it and it seemed close, but always difficult to tell with who knows how many people jumping on the mattress each and every day. Any advice? Thanks for your help

That last one was luxury firm pillow top queen size. According to your chart, they did not match up exactly, but the luxfirm was the only one he had available to try. Big difference?? But the one I liked best was the Palace Plush pillow top. Again, Queen size. Here's where I get a little suspicious. Sales guy claimed the Palace line was a step up from the Garrick, with more padding. Your chart doesn't make it look that way. Both are slightly overweight. Not sure if I should get innerspring or foam or?.. I also tend to get hot when I sleep. Can you tell me what I should be looking at when I go try them out at the store? Have a limited budget

The main difference between those models will be the extra inch and a half of foam. If you liked both mattresses equally, the Golden Gate is a fine choice. If you were interested in the BackCare coils, you could get the mattress from one of the competitors who has that feature.

MattressNerd Says

July 14, 2017 at 6:58 am

That's actually a good point. Macy's generally changes their Beautyrest models to make it difficult to comparison shop. It looks like they are using their strip of titanium in the center 1/3rd of the mattress instead of the BackCare coils. The coils would be better in my opinion, so it might not be quite as good as the competitors models.

I am trying to buy beautyrest sliver Luxury Firm pillow top Golden gate or Waterscape. I see your comparison chart that Waterscape is the same model with Charcoal Coast which has 490 Coil back support system. However, in the Macy's website, they do not have that information but they said they have Titanium Lumba support. I am trying to buy mattress for my back pain. Do you think Waterscape still have 490 Coil system or should I just buy Golden Gate for better value?

Hi! I am debating beautyrest pillow-top luxury firm Golden Gate and Waterscape model. If I use your comparison chart, Waterscape has 490 Coil BackCare Support but Macy's did not note that and they talked about Titinium exclusive. Do you think Waterscape has 490 Coil Backcare system? Or is Macy's one different from other comparable models?

As far as I can tell, Personal Comfort makes an effort to make it easy to compare, so the P5 will be similar to the A5 at Personal Comfort. Innomax's website is a mess and doesn't give clear specs, so I have no idea what will be similar to the P5 there.

MattressNerd Says

The Pillipsburg 2 is the older model, which compares to the older model of the Keaton. Macy's new Keaton is made exclusively for them. It'll be similar to the Phillipsburg 3, but not the same. The Exclusive titanium lumbar support is exclusive to Macy's, just like they say. It is a thin strip of titanium between the foam and coils, which I cannot feel when trying out the mattresses. It's more of a marketing gimmick than anything.

Hello! I see that the Beautyrest Keaton luxury firm pillowtop at Macy's and the Beautyrest Phillipsburg luxury firm pillowtop at US Mattress are the same on the 2016 chart. US Mattress now sells the "Phillipsburg II" instead. Is this still comparable to the Keaton? Also, Macy's says the Keaton has titanium lumbar support that is exclusive to Macy's. Does the Phillipsburg II have this? Does it even matter (we're both smaller side sleepers)? Thanks!

The Keaton is on the Older Beautyrest comparison chart. The Legend is only sold at Mattress Firm. You can't compare the same mattress elsewhere, but the Beautyrest Black line is a similar quality.

Hello, I am ready to buy a new king mattress set and am particularly interested in a mattress at Macy's due to their July 4 sale. I'm looking at the Recharge World Class Keaton Luxury Firm Pillowtop. Want a firm mattress but hope the pillowtop will make it more comfortable when sleeping on our side. Macy's price for this king set seems really good at $1647.00. Was also looking at a Beautyrest Legend model at Mattress Firm. Seems to have the same basic 1000 coils, but also adds micro-coils. And it costs roughly $2500 for the set (and it's not a pillowtop). My wife and I are both 69 y/o and we're both a little overweight - so support is important to us. Will appreciate any help you can give us here. Thanks so much! Bill Clifford

Hampton & Rhodes is only sold at mattress firm as far as I'm aware, so you won't find the exact mattress elsewhere. That said, it is a fairly basic mattress. The coil system is the "old school" type in which all the coils are tied together. Virtually all retail mattresses you'll see today use individually wrapped coils instead, which are better at contouring to your body and preventing motion transfer. The foam layers are fairly simple as well. Much of it is just regular polyurethane foam, with a thin layer of memory foam. That's why the price is so low. If you can find a mid-range Sealy Posturepedic or Simmons Beautyrest that you like for about the same price, that'll be a better deal.

Thanks for writing. It's tough to say which one that is at Rooms to Go, because they don't list the specs of the mattress. They only say it's 12 inches thick, and none of the Beautyrest Silvers are 12 inches. The Palmer Island at Sears is 13 inches, and that's the thinnest Beautyrest Silver Hybrid listed anywhere. So either it's the same as the Palmer Island at Sears and RTG just make a mistake on the height, or it's a lower end model that nobody else sells.

I bought a "new" Simmons Beautyrest Platinum Hybrid from a dealer, but the cover fabric is completely different from any Beautyrest models I find advertised, and the stuffing feels strange. Is it possible I actually bought a refurbished mattress instead? Is it legal to sell these as "new"? Do you think this mattress is safe/hygienic? Do I have any recourse? Thanks P.S. No tags, dealer said removed by Simmons because discounted seconds, " as is, no warranty".

I really can't know for sure what's best for her. Everybody is different. Since she's older and fairly light, I'd recommend something with a plusher top, however, older people tend to prefer firmer mattresses just because that's all they've known most of their lives, so it's sometimes a tough sell to convince somebody that a soft mattress is good.

Thank you for your recommendation. My husband and I recently purchased a Leesa mattress to replace our 12 year old Temperpedic. We were thrilled that they honored their free shipping to us all the way out in Hawaii! Most companies have that small print regarding Hawaii and Alaska. So that in itself was a huge money saving deal. Other than noticing a slight chemical type odor for the first week or so, we both absolutely LOVE our new mattress! The odor has dissipated now and I have a feeling it occurred because we were just so anxious to put the sheets on and jump on that the mattress didn't have enough time to air out. Thank you again for your wonderful, informative site! I absolutely recommend buying a mattress this way. Hassle free! Mahalo!

Hi: I am mattress shopping and have narrowed the choices down to three but am so confused as to which mattress would be better in the long run. My husband and I are both back/side sleepers and have shoulder and hip issues. We are looking at the Beautyrest Recharge Hybrid Sybel Plush, the Beautyrest Recharge Hybrid Tamara Ultimate Luxury Plus and the Serta iSeries Honoree Super Pillow Top mattresses. I weigh 108 pounds and my husband weighs 180. Would one of these mattresses be better than the other in the long run or should I avoid any of them? Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated! A low profile boxspring is just a boxspring that is about half the height of a regular boxspring. It's designed to be just as solid and sturdy as the regular boxspring. Unless you have a lot of slats on the bed, I don't recommend putting a board across the frame unless the wood is so thick that it won't flex at all (even when spanning across a big open space in the frame). A low profile boxspring will run you about $180 on Amazon, and something like that will be strong enough to hold the mattress.

James Says

I bought a really great boxspring and mattress a year ago and then this year I bought an amazing bed frame. My problem came about when I put my box spring and mattress on the bed frame. The mattress is way to high. You have to take a running start to jump up onto the bed. And know I don't know what to do. someone mentioned replacing my normal box spring with a Low Profile Box Spring - but I'n not sure I know what that is. Or can i just ditch the box spring all together and put a big piece board on the frame slats and then put my mattress on that? This bed is costing me more than I wanted in both money and stress of falling out of the two story mattress. Can anyone give me some help or guidance, i'm really bummed and desperate to fix this without going into debt. thanks, james

When I asked if they had any deals on accessories they gave me a $300 credit for accessories. All in all I got the mattress w/ foundation, two expensive pillows, mattress cover and high gauge bedframe for a lot less than listed price in store.
