Puffy Lux Mattress Review

Puffy says this will be “the most comfortable mattress you’ve ever slept on” or they will “happily give you a refund.”  Big promises.  Let’s see if it can hold up it’s end of the bargain.

Nerd Score: 4.9/5

The Puffy Lux mattress is an upgrade from the original and popular all-foam offering. “Lux” means Puffy enhanced the features and uses more materials and better materials. It comes with a higher price tag than the original Puffy, but if thicker with more cushioning is what you need, then this may be the mattress for you.

The additional 2-inch layer is sandwiched between the contouring top layer and the thick, dense support layer below. That 2 inches may not seem significant, but know that it is a transition layer. That means you’ll get the cushioning and contouring of the top layer without sinking into and hitting the denser support layer. There’s something in between to ease you into the mattress. That gives you a fighting chance to keep your spine aligned and reduce pressure on the curves of your body.

Puffy doesn’t beat around the bush. The company says the Puffy Lux is built for back, side and stomach sleepers, and it will be “the most comfortable mattress you’ve ever slept on” or they will “happily give you a refund.” Those are bold claims, but not empty ones. If you sleep on it and don’t like it, they’ll give you a complete refund and fetch the rejected mattress. (However, it can’t refund the shipping cost if you ordered in from Alaska or Hawaii. )

In this new era of mattress development, sales and online marketing, there is a ton of competition between companies and they basically have to offer these sorts of perks to consumers. But it means you can try the Puffy Lux with very little risk.

Here are some features to consider when looking at the memory foam Puffy Lux mattress:

  • Foam mattress limits motion transfer
  • Gel inside the foam absorbs heat so you sleep cooler
  • Additional temperature regulating layer has been recently added for consistency
  • Cover is now stain resistant
  • 2-inch transition layer stops you from sinking into the dense support layer
  • Works on any surface—box spring, slats, adjustable frame, etc.
  • Great choice for combination sleepers
  • Company donates returned units specifically to children in need
  • All foam materials used in mattress are CertiPUR-US® Certified
  • 101-night trial, basically one day longer than industry standard
  • Made in the USA

The Puffy Lux is an all-foam mattress made with three layers of varying densities of foam.

The top layer of the Puffy Lux is meant to stabilize temperature. Puffy says the mattress will subtly cool you in the summer and warm you during the winter.  More recently, Puffy released an updated version adding in a new layer for their Climate-Adpative Regulation foam for advanced temperature control.

The Puffy Lux is a medium-firm mattress that is slightly softer than the original Puffy mattress. This version will appeal to average weight side sleepers and combination sleepers who change position throughout the night. Because some sleepers say it’s a softer version than the original, we’ll remind you that any mattress will feel different to people who weigh more or less than an average-sized person. The 101-night trial will allow you to figure out how firm it feels to you.

Edge support

For an all-foam mattress, Puffy Lux does a good job supporting any weight along the edges of the mattress. Originally memory foam mattresses did a poor job of this, but the Puffy Lux has three layers that combine to do a good job. Edge support is important if you share a bed and need to use the entire surface of the mattress.

Motion transfer

Couples or people who sleep with their children or pets, should pay close attention to how well a mattress isolates motion and stops it from traveling to the other side of the bed. Foam mattresses have always performed well on this score and so, too, does the Puffy Lux mattress.

You don’t want to feel every toss and turn of the human or animal sleeping next to you. It may wake you up. And what’s the point of buying a great mattress when someone else is still waking you up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom?

The Puffy Lux is made of four foam layers that are all CertiPUR-US Certified.

First, the covering. The Puffy Lux mattress is covered in a breathable, soft fabric.

Inside the covering, there is a 3-inch layer of polyurethane foam infused with cooling gel at the top of the mattress. The layer isn’t as dense as other memory foams so air can flow through it to enhance the cooling effect of the gel. The gel actually will absorb heat to keep you cool in the summer and hold onto it during the winter to keep you cozy. It also is soft enough to conform to your body in multiple sleep positions.

The second layer is a 2-inch adaptive, transition layer that will contour to the body curves so there is no pressure being placed on your shoulders, hips and thighs. It is a proprietary foam found only in Puffy Lux mattress and it is supposed to conform and also push back against your weight, in equal measure. So it will ease pressure on those key areas without making you feel like the mattress just swallowed you whole. In that way it eases the transition between the softer upper layer and the firm support layer beneath.

The third layer is the new 2-inch Climate-Adaptive Regulation.  This layer is inserted to create temperature consistency throughout the night.  Limiting these fluctuations should lead to a more consistency night of sleep.

The fourth layer is the firm support layer, a 7-inch block of high density foam that holds everything up and makes it a durable option. Puffy Lux says this layer has the strength and durability to work on any type of base

Here’s a breakdown of the Puffy Lux mattress:

  • Twin XL: 39” x 80”
  • Full: 54” x 75”
  • Queen: 60” x 80”
  • King: 76” x 80”
  • Cal King: 72” x 84”

The Puffy Lux comes with a 101-night trial period. Within that time period, if you don’t like the Puffy Lux you can return it free for a full refund. The company does recommend you try it for at least 30 days before you decide, but they do required you sleep on it at least 14 days before initiating a return. That way you know for sure. It’s a fairly standard request within the industry.

Puffy Lux mattress comes with a limited lifetime warranty—the life of the mattress. Keep in mind a good mattress should last between 7 and 10 years.  Puffy will replace or repair the defect during the life of the mattress with the original owner just so long as the mattress was used properly and set up on a suitable base.

The covered defects include excessive sags or body impressions greater than 1.5 inches, a manufacturer’s flaw in the zipper or cover, that don’t result from improper use. The warranty doesn’t cover the mattress if it has been abused, burned or damaged by improper use. It doesn’t cover normal wear and tear.

Delivery & Setup

Puffy Lux ships, compressed in a box, free to your door via FedEx within 2-5 business days. Grab a friend to unbox it and get it up onto your frame or base. Once removed from the box and plastic wrapping, it may take awhile for it to fully inflate. It will regain most of its shape quickly, but may take a day or two to fully inflate.

Customer service

Puffy goes an additional step here in that the company specifies it will donate returned mattresses to children in need. Most companies don’t specify. Also, their customer service operation accepts calls during extended business hours during the week and regular business hours on the weekend.

Puffy Lux is a great choice if you’re used to memory foam and love the feel of being enveloped and cradled in your mattress. You needn’t worry about being swallowed because this Lux version of the original Puffy mattress features an added transition layer in the middle. Two inches of a slightly denser foam that will stop your body from falling into the thick, firm support layer below without you losing any comfort you get from the top layer.

Even the support layer is enhanced; it’s more dense and firmer and should be a durable choice for anyone who demands their mattress give them at least seven years of use. The higher price tag of the Puffy Lux, as compared to the original Puffy, is due to the higher quality materials used in construction. The quality of the materials should insure the years you get out of it will be comfortable ones.

You will pay more for the enhancements, but you’re still purchasing a better version of a mattress that many people found very comfortable. The Puffy Lux is both a higher quality mattress and middle-of-the-road offering. If you’re willing to pay for the quality, it will accommodate many types of sleepers and be a great fit for average-sized people. We think it’s a big winner for side sleepers.
