Brooklyn Aurora Luxe Mattress Firmness & Feel

Brooklyn Aurora Luxe Mattress Firmness

The Aurora Luxe is available in three firmness levels—soft (5/10), medium (6.5/10), and firm (8/10)—to accommodate the most sleepers regardless of their sleep position. The firmness changes based on how firm the TitanFlex layer (the second layer) is.

The medium firm is going to be best for most people, and it was the one we were able to test. If it means anything to you when someone puts their money where their mouth is, company founder John Merwin says that he sleeps on the Aurora Luxe medium.

What Does the Brooklyn Aurora Luxe Feel Like?

How the Brooklyn Aurora Luxe feels depends on which firmness level you choose. Since we tested the medium version, we can describe how it feels. The 3.5″ of foam on top of the bed are cushioning, but also buoyant and springy. We still felt lifted on top of the mattress, probably due to the firmness of the foams and the supportive nature of the coils.

What Sleeping Position Is the Brooklyn Aurora Luxe Best For?

Note: The below chart is based on the medium firmness rating of the Brooklyn Signature mattress.

Body Type: Back Sleepers Stomach Sleepers Side Sleepers
Lightweight < 130 lbs: 5 4 2
Average-weight 130–230 lbs: 5 4 3
Heavyweight > 230 lbs: 4 3 4

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers are the easiest group to accommodate: they just need a mattress supportive enough to maintain their spines’ natural “S” curve. The medium and firm versions of the Brooklyn Aurora Luxe relieve pressure in the low back and easily support lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight sleepers. For more options, check out the best mattresses for back sleepers

Side Sleepers

When it comes to side sleeping on this mattress, the medium bed does a great job at keeping the spine aligned. This keeps away back pain caused by poor posture on your mattress.

The medium Aurora Luxe’s biggest problem for side sleepers is its ability to relieve pressure from the hips and shoulders. When we rolled out our pressure map we saw trouble in those sensitive pressure point areas, so I recommend the lightweight and average-weight side sleeper try out the soft version. Heavyweight people sink deeper into the pressure-relieving foam, so the medium firmness level works well.

For more pressure-relieving options, see the best mattresses for side sleepers.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers need a medium-firm to firm mattress that keeps the hips elevated and spine aligned. Because the medium bed is a 6.5/10 on the firmness scale, lightweight and average-weight stomach sleepers should see great alignment on this mattress. Heavyweight stomach sleepers should check out the firm version or anything on our best mattresses for stomach sleepers list.

Combination Sleepers

If you tend to change sleeping positions often at night, you are what we call a combination sleeper. The best mattresses for combination sleepers are highly responsive—which is the bed’s ability to move as you move. The pocketed coils in Aurora Luxe’s construction make it super bouncy and easy to change positions whether you’re lightweight, average-weight, or heavyweight.

Brooklyn Aurora Luxe Mattress Performance

Is The Brooklyn Aurora Luxe Mattress Cooling?

The Aurora Luxe stakes its reputation on being the mattress that keeps sleepers cool throughout the night. Even when you touch it straight out of the box, it feels cool. The Aurora Luxe excels at “thermal conductivity” meaning it quickly moves heat away from you. For example, it can take up to 35 minutes of you lying in bed before it stops feeling cool to the touch.

Plenty of people crave this feature. “Sleeping hot” has become more of an issue since the advent of memory foam mattresses. While the Aurora Luxe does use memory foam, it counteracts that by infusing cooling gels into the foam and using innerspring coils for support. The coils encourage airflow.

Edge Support

Some people like to sit on the side of the bed while getting ready in the mornings. Some have to sleep on the edge of their beds if their partner or pet hogs space. How strongly the edges of the mattress support you is important for those people. The Aurora Luxe medium does squish down some when someone sits on the edge but will support people who find themselves sleeping along the edges.

Responsiveness

We gave the Aurora Luxe a high score for responsiveness. It’s very easy to change positions and move around on the surface of this mattress, probably due to the springy coil base layer and responsive foam.

Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?

How much you feel your partner moving around in the bed each night can mean the difference between insomnia and energizing sleep; this is called motion transfer. If your mattress transfers motion too much, your movements could wake up your sleep partner or vice versa.

The Brooklyn Aurora Luxe has bouncy, responsive coils that are great for people who change positions (or a great mattress for sex), but it doesn’t isolate motion very well. If you sleep with a partner but wake up easily, check out our list of the best mattresses for couples.

Noise

We didn’t notice any squeaking when testing out our Brooklyn Aurora Luxe, so we feel confident calling it a quiet mattress.

Pain Relief

Whether or not you experience pain relief on the Brooklyn Aurora Luxe depends on your body type and sleeping position. A mattress can ease your back pain or it can create it based on how your body is positioned on its surface. Luckily, the Aurora Luxe keeps side sleepers’ spines aligned, which prevents mattress-related back pain. Plus, it eases the pressure from the low back for back sleepers, which also helps relieve back pain.

Brooklyn Bedding recommends choosing soft if you have a lightweight body type or are a side sleeper who likes being “hugged” by your mattress. Choose medium if you’re a back sleeper who likes to feel cushioned or if you change positions often. Choose firm if you have a heavyweight body type or are a stomach or back sleeper who needs good lumbar support.

Sex

As a cooling, bouncy mattress, the Aurora Luxe should be great for sex.

Off-Gassing

The Aurora Luxe may have a slight new mattress odor—called off-gassing in the mattress industry—after it’s removed from the shipping packaging. This scent is not toxic and should be gone within a few hours up to a few days.

Durability

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe mattress uses over 1,000 pocketed coils and base foam to keep people supported on the mattress surface. Because of this, not only will Aurora Luxe be a durable mattress, but it will also work well for all body types, including heavier people. We estimate that the it will last at least seven years, possibly even 10 years.

Brooklyn Aurora Luxe Mattress Construction: What’s It Made Of?

The Aurora Luxe mattress is made up of five layers: three foam layers above an innerspring layer and foam base layer. The cooling cover fabric, Phase Change Materials in the memory foam layers, and the innerspring structural support are all geared towards increasing airflow and keeping the mattress and sleeper cool.

Layer #1—Cooling Cover: This soft cover is cool to the touch thanks to a Phase Change Material infusion. PCMs alternately pull body heat away from you and then release it to maintain an optimal temperature.

Layer #2—CopperFlex and TitanCool Foam (1.5″): The top layer feels bouncier than most memory foams. It’s infused with copper to make it feel cool to the touch and encourage an antibacterial environment. It’s also infused with TitanCool, a water-based solution that draws away excess heat.

Layer #3—TitanFlex Foam (2″): The second layer is a type of foam that Brooklyn Bedding engineered for its mattresses. The flexibility means it’s responsive to your body and adjusts quickly each time you move.

Layer #4—Memory Foam (1″):The third layer is 1″ of a sturdier memory foam that transitions the mattress from the contouring elements to the support structure.

Layer #5—Individually Wrapped Coils (8″): Individually wrapped coils make up the 8″ fourth layer, contouring to your body while also supporting it. There are up to 1,283 individually wrapped coils that make up the primary support system of the Queen size mattress.

Layer #6—Base Support Foam (1″): The fifth layer is a sturdy, 1″ layer of high-density foam that adds more support to the structure of the mattress.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping

You can expect Brooklyn Bedding to process your order and deliver it free to the lower 48 states in the U.S. within four to eight days. People in Hawaii and Alaska don’t need to feel left out, since Brooklyn Bedding does ship there starting at $125 per mattress or $45 for accessories. Shipping to Canada starts at $250 for mattresses and $65 for accessories.

The Brooklyn Aurora Luxe, like all Brooklyn Bedding mattresses, is a bed in a box, so it arrives compressed in plastic and rolled up in a box. To unpack your bed, simply pull the mattress from the cardboard box, cut the plastic wrapping, and unroll it. This process took us about two minutes with almost no off-gassing.

Warranty

All Brooklyn Bedding mattresses come with an industry-standard, 10-year warranty. If the mattress starts sagging more than 1″, or there are other physical defects not related to wear and tear, like if the foam cracks or splits, Brooklyn Bedding will repair or replace it “in a reasonable amount of time.”

As with warranties for other hybrid mattresses, you must use the recommended foundation for the warranty to apply. Brooklyn Bedding says a solid foundation with little or no give is the best option for use with their mattresses.

Make sure to check out our Brooklyn Bedding Warranty breakdown to learn more about this brand’s mattress warranty.

Trial Period & Returns

Brooklyn Bedding offers a generous 120-night sleep trial period, which is 20 days longer than the industry standard. They do want you to try the bed for at least 30 days before you make your decision. It takes time to get used to a new mattress. Using it for at least 30 days allows you to go through the transition period.

If you decide to return any Brooklyn Bedding mattress within the 120-night trial period, you should contact the company to schedule a return, and you’ll receive a full refund. There are no fees to return the mattress either.

Even then, if you do have concerns about the mattress you bought, the company will work to find the best mattress for you. They can add a more comfortable topper, recommend a different base, or suggest a different mattress.

Addressing Brooklyn Aurora Luxe Mattress Complaints

High Price Tag

The Aurora Luxe is a luxury mattress with a premium construction, so it’s not the best budget pick. Still, it’s relatively affordable for a luxury grade mattress. If you’re shopping for a luxury bed, the Aurora Luxe is a value option. Also, there are several Brooklyn Bedding mattresses, and a few of them have lower price points.

Long Shipping Times

Some customers have complained about longer shipping times during the COVID-19 pandemic. Brooklyn Bedding mattresses are made-to-order to keep costs low compared to competitors. The mattress is definitely worth the wait. And keep in mind that lots of mattress companies are experiencing similar supply chain and shipping delays.

Brooklyn Aurora Luxe Mattress FAQs

Does Brooklyn Bedding make high-quality mattresses?

Brooklyn Bedding makes high-quality mattresses with budget-friendly pricing. They own the entire mattress construction and distribution process, which is headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona. Each mattress is made-to-order, so your mattress won''''t be stacked and stored in a warehouse for months before it's shipped to you.

Where is the Brooklyn Aurora mattress made?

Brooklyn Bedding designs, constructs, and ships their mattresses from their private facility in Phoenix, Arizona rarity among online mattress brands. They make their own mattress materials at their facility, but our Customer Service representative wasn't able to tell us where they source their cotton, wool, or latex.

Does Brooklyn Bedding take your old mattress?

No, Brooklyn Bedding does not remove your old mattress, a service that's usually included with white glove delivery (which they don't offer either). The best way to get rid of your old mattress is to recycle it by having a charity or removal service come retrieve it.

What’s the Bottom Line?

The Brooklyn Aurora Luxe is a luxury hybrid mattress that goes all-in on cooling features. This includes cool-to-the-touch cover fabric, phase change materials, and a coil base layer for better airflow. If sleeping hot is your main concern, the Aurora Luxe could be one of the best options out there.

With three firmness levels, it’s compatible with most sleeping positions and body types. The medium version is best for back sleepers, stomach sleepers under 230 lbs, and side sleepers over 230 lbs.
