Birch Organic Pillow

The Birch Organic Pillow is an all-natural, ethically and sustainably sourced pillow that feels plush and supportive, and accommodates all sleeping positions.

Materials

Cover

Made of 100% organic cotton. This creates a very breathable, soft to the touch, and stretchy feel. Although both the Birch Organic and the Eco-Rest covers are made of 100% cotton, the feel of this model is thick like a cotton sweatshirt. Unlike the Eco-Rest cover, which feels thinner like a cotton table cloth.

Fill

The fill is a core of shredded all-natural Talalay latex, wrapped in a wool case. The combination of these materials make this pillow supportive, plush, and moisture-wicking. Wool is thermoregulating— which means it adapts to your body’s temperature. So if you’re warming up, the wool will draw heat away from your body, not trap it. And on the flip side, if you’re someone who’s always cold when they sleep, the wool will insulate heat and keep you warm. The natural Talalay latex is hypoallergenic, antimicrobial and mite-resistant, making it a healthy addition to your sleeping environment.

Feel

The Birch Organic Pillow feels very soft, light, and plush. When you squeeze it, you can feel the air flowing through the fabric, which is another indicator that this pillow won’t trap body heat if you tend to sleep hot.

When I laid back, I noticed the Talalay latex core was responsive and kept my head buoyant on the surface. So don’t expect a slow sinking feeling like you’d get on traditional memory foam, but rather a springy surface that lets your head rest on top of the pillow. It’ll quickly retain its shape, meaning the materials are durable, and should stay equally as buoyant over prolonged use.

Who will love the Birch Organic Pillow?

  • All sleeping positions
  • Hot sleepers
  • Individuals who love a soft, bouncy pillow

Who should steer clear of the Birch Organic Pillow?

  • Memory foam lovers
  • Budget shoppers
  • Those who need a machine washable pillow (the Birch Organic is spot clean only)

Birch Eco-Rest Pillow

The Eco-Rest Pillow has one of the most simple constructions I’ve ever come across, but it may look more familiar to you given it’s traditional design. A flatter, softer model than the Birch Organic, this pillow is better suited for back and stomach sleepers.

Materials

Cover

100% 300 thread count organic cotton, which is soft to the touch, moisture-wicking, and breathable. It also features a two inch gusset all around the perimeter.

Fill

100% recycled polyester

Feel

When you lie down on this pillow, it feels soft, plush, and easy to sink right into— kinda like sleeping on a cloud if that was a real thing! It compresses a lot when pressure is applied to it, so if you like to sink into your pillow you’ll really enjoy this, but if you prefer a more durable, supportive pillow, this model probably won’t be for you. I also didn’t experience any heat retention during use, so I’d say this pillow is at least temperature neutral and features a breathable design, so it won’t make you hot but it also may not be enough for an extremely hot sleeper.

Who will love the Eco-Rest Pillow?

  • Back and stomach sleepers
  • Those who prefer a soft, low profile pillow
  • Those wanting a more affordable organic pillow

Who should steer clear of the Eco-Rest Pillow?

  • Side sleepers
  • Hot sleepers
  • Those who need a machine washable pillow (the Eco-Rest is spot clean only)

King18″ x 34″ x 2″$85

Nerd’s Final Take

All in all, both of these pillows are great options if you’re looking for an eco-friendly pillow to invest in. To recap, the Birch Organic Pillow will work better for hot sleepers, all sleeping positions, and those who like a buoyant, bouncy pillow. The Eco-Rest is better suited for stomach and back sleepers, budget shoppers, and those who like a soft, low loft pillow. Both of these options are non-toxic and very comfortable. They are on the pricier side, but both models are high-quality and will last a few years with proper maintenance!
