WinkBed Mattress Video Review

Some of the WinkBed’s best features include temperature regulation, strong edge support, and responsive materials. In addition, the mattress is available in four different firmness options, making the WinkBed a good option for a wide variety of sleepers. Check out our video from the sleep lab to help you decide whether it’s right for you!

WinkBed Mattress Firmness and Feel

WinkBed Firmness

The WinkBed mattress has four different firmness options: softer, luxury-firm, firmer, and plus, which we rated on our firmness scale at 4/10, 6/10, 7.5/10, and 8/10, respectively. There’s a WinkBed for everyone, but you’ll have to decide which one is the right firmness for you.

What Does the WinkBed Mattress Feel Like?

The softer WinkBed is best for side sleepers, who need their shoulders and hips to sink in more to maintain their alignment and prevent pain in those pressure points. The luxury-firm WinkBed mattress is the most versatile and will work for the average sleeper.

The firmer WinkBed is a great choice for stomach sleepers who need to keep their hips elevated. The WinkBed Plus is designed for heavyweight sleepers, who need a little extra firmness to prevent sinking into their mattress too deeply due to heavier body weight.

What Sleeping Position Is the WinkBed Mattress Best For?

Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  5 5 4
Average-weight (130–230 lbs): 5 4 5
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  5 4 5

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Back Sleepers

Of all the different sleeping positions, back sleepers are the easiest to please. These sleepers just need to ensure their natural spine curvature is maintained throughout the night, so a medium-firm to firm mattress is the best bet.

Lightweight and average-weight back sleepers will probably be most comfortable on the luxury-firm or firmer WinkBed, while heavyweight back sleepers will be coziest on the firmer or plus WinkBed. Looking for more options? See our picks for the best mattresses for back sleepers.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers with the wrong mattress are all too familiar with lower back pain. To prevent that pain, it’s important to keep the hips elevated, which keeps the spine in its proper alignment. That generally means stomach sleepers want a firmer mattress.

For heavyweight stomach sleepers, the WinkBed Plus will provide that extra support to keep the hips elevated. Average-weight stomach sleepers will be comfy on the firmer or plus, depending on their firmness preference, and lightweight stomach sleepers will be best on the firmer WinkBed. To find our top recommendations, see our best mattresses for stomach sleepers.

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers usually need a soft mattress that will allow their hips and shoulders to sink in and keep their spine aligned. For lightweight and average-weight side sleepers, the softer WinkBed is a great choice to get that pressure relief. Heavyweight side sleepers might need a little extra firmness to prevent sinking too deep, so the luxury-firm is a good option. For more options, see our best mattresses for side sleepers.

Combination Sleepers

Combination sleepers need to not only consider their size and how a mattress performs for different sleeping positions, but also how responsive a mattress is. A responsive mattress will allow you to move between positions throughout the night without feeling stuck.

The luxury-firm WinkBed is very responsive, making it a great bed for lightweight to average-weight combination sleepers. For heavyweight combination sleepers, the firmer or plus WinkBed should do the trick. Find more options in our best mattresses for combination sleepers.

WinkBed Mattress Performance

Is the WinkBed Mattress Cooling?

Is there a worse feeling than waking up at night sweatier than you get at the gym? It could very well be your mattress that is the culprit behind your nighttime heat waves. For hot sleepers, temperature regulation is an essential mattress quality.

The WinkBed has a few measures to regulate temperature, including gel-infused foam and innerspring coils. Regular memory foam contours to your body by absorbing your body heat, but the gel foam is designed to give you some of that contouring without absorbing heat. And the coils inside the mattress allow room for airflow, making the WinkBed breathable and ultimately cooler for you.

If you’re looking for more mattresses with good temperature regulation, see our best cooling mattresses.

Edge Support

Everyone wants to feel supported in life, and it’s no different with your mattress. We thought the WinkBed had really great edge support, meaning that the mattress doesn’t dip or slouch when you are sitting or sleeping near the edge. The coils around the edge of the mattress are designed to be even more supportive than the rest of the coils, creating an extra edge support system around the perimeter of the mattress.

Good edge support is also a good indicator of durability, so having those reinforced edges will help maintain your mattress’s shape and integrity over time. The WinkBed is also built with high-density foam, which can help prevent sagging. Looking for more info? Check out our edge support article.

Responsiveness

The WinkBed is very easy to move around on, thanks to its responsive foam comfort layers and supportive, springy coil base. Combination sleepers will have the easiest time moving around on the firmer options, since they won’t sink as far into the foam layers.

Motion Isolation: Is the WinkBed Good for Couples?

If you sleep with a partner, chances are you’ve been woken up at night by the other person tossing and turning or getting out of bed. A mattress with good motion isolation will stop motion at the source, preventing motion transfer from one side of the bed to the other.

When we tested the WinkBed at the Sleep Lab, we saw a significant amount of motion transfer across the mattress. That means it’s not the best fit for light sleepers who share the bed. Otherwise, we consider it one of the best mattresses for couples—it’s supportive, bouncy (wink), has great edge support, and is offered in four firmness levels for couples to choose from.

Noise

We didn’t notice any noise coming from the WinkBed mattress, but you may notice squeaking if you have an older bed frame.

Pain Relief

The firmer WinkBed options are great for those with back pain, especially lower back pain, since they keep your hips lifted in alignment with your shoulders. While the softer WinkBed versions work well for side sleepers, we did notice a little pressure buildup near our testers’ shoulders and hips, so it’s not the best choice for those with arthritis or shoulder pain.

Sex

With a springy, responsive, breathable construction, the WinkBed is a great mattress for sex.

Off-Gassing

We noticed a very mild off-gassing odor when unboxing our WinkBed mattress, but it was gone after a couple of hours.

Durability

You can expect the WinkBed to last you at least seven years, maybe closer to a decade.

WinkBed Mattress Construction: What’s It Made Of?

The WinkBed is a hybrid mattress, meaning that it is constructed with both coils and foam. It comes in four different firmnesses—softer, luxury firm, firmer, and the WinkBed Plus, which is specifically designed for heavier sleepers. To learn more about it, read our full WinkBeds Plus mattress review

The construction of the WinkBed varies slightly between the models of different firmness levels, but they share the same general structure.

Layer #1—TENCEL Cover: The exterior of the WinkBed is made of TENCEL, which is a performance fabric made from eucalyptus wood fibers. The cover is designed to keep you cool and dry as you sleep by absorbing moisture.

Layer #2—Euro-Pillow Top with Gel Infused Foam: This quilted pillow top makes the WinkBed cushioning and supportive. The gel-infused HyperSoft foam in the pillow top is designed not to retain heat like traditional memory foam. Additionally, foam enhancement provides targeted support in the lumbar region.

Layer #3—Individually Wrapped Pocketed Coils: This support layer of coils provides targeted back support that helps to keep you comfortable and correctly aligned. The coil system also helps to promote airflow in the mattress, which is one of the benefits of a hybrid mattress compared to traditional memory foam mattresses.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

Your WinkBed will take about two weeks to ship from the day you order it—your mattress will be brand new, made-to-order, so it takes a few extra days. Fortunately, WinkBeds offers free delivery within the contiguous U.S., so you don’t have to worry about shipping fees unless you live in Alaska or Hawaii.

WinkBeds doesn’t offer a white glove delivery service, so be sure to grab a friend if you need some extra help setting up your mattress.

Your new WinkBed will arrive compressed and rolled into a box. When you take it out of the box, all you have to do is remove the wrapping and place it on your foundation.

Warranty

How Long Does WinkBeds Warranty Period Last?

It’s important to read the fine print of Lifetime warranty policies, as many mattress brands only offer substantial protection for the first 10 or 20 years of ownership. But WinkBeds offers a non-prorated, limited Lifetime warranty for all of its mattress models. WinkBeds’ warranty is non-prorated, which means that WinkBeds will cover the full cost for replacement and repairs if your foam or hybrid mattress is found defective at any point after it has been purchased.

In our view, the WinkBeds policy is a better offer than bedding companies that advertise prorated Lifetime warranties. Prorated warranties sometimes require customers to cover up to 50% of the costs associated with repairs and replacements after as little as five years. These types of warranties are effectively not much better than standard 10-year limited warranties, but WinkBeds stands out by providing completely non-prorated coverage for the entire lifespan of the mattress.

The main catch to the policy? The WinkBeds warranty is limited to one mattress replacement per mattress purchase, so if your first WinkBeds delivery is defective and your replacement mattress also has a problem, the second mattress replacement is not protected by a WinkBeds warranty.

What Is Covered by the WinkBeds Warranty?

Visible Indentations Measuring 1.5” or Deeper

WinkBeds will replace mattresses that have a visible indentation greater than 1.5” deep, as long as that indentation or sag isn’t because of the use of an improper foundation or base. Many warranty policies will replace a mattress if the indentation is 1” deep, but WinkBeds requires the indentation to be half an inch deeper before the company takes action.

Physical Flaws in the Mattress that Cause Cracking or Deterioration

If the foam or springs show evidence of degradation, splitting or cracking due to a manufacturing defect, WinkBeds will replace or repair the mattress for free. WinkBeds does not explicitly define what the brand considers “physical flaws,” which may leave you to do some haggling with the company’s customer service team if you end up needing a replacement.

What the WinkBeds Warranty Does Not Cover
  • Sagging Around the Edges
  • Body Impressions Measuring Less than 1.5” Deep
  • Physical Damage from Burns, Cuts or Stains
  • Secondhand Mattresses
  • Comfort or Performance Preferences
  • Sizing Issues
Factors That Would Void the WinkBeds Warranty
  • Mattress is placed on a soft, unsupportive surface with no center support leg(s)
  • Any violation of instructions provided by WinkBeds, from unboxing the mattress incorrectly to not placing it safely on a frame
  • Sale or ownership relinquishment to a subsequent owner
  • Purchase from a non-authorized retailer
  • No proof of original purchase

How Does the WinkBeds Warranty Measure Up?

The WinkBeds warranty stands out from other mattress companies’ warranties for a few reasons. First, it’s non-prorated and the coverage extends for the lifetime of the product. Whether you discover a defect on day one or after 10 years of sleeping on the original mattress, WinkBeds will repair or replace the mattress if your claim is found valid. Second, according to the return policy, customers are responsible for the shipping costs associated with returning the mattress for a repair or replacement, but the brand will assume all transportation costs associated with returning and replacing your mattress if a defect exists.

Overall, this warranty is on par with other luxury mattress company warranties. The only downside of this warranty is that, in order to receive coverage for a mattress indentation, the dip must reach 1.5 inches in depth. Many other mattress companies cover indentations as shallow as 1 inch or even smaller. WinkBeds does not explain its reasoning for requiring impressions and indentations to be deeper than average in its warranty policy, but we wouldn’t let that extra half inch keep you from choosing this high quality, luxury hybrid mattress.

Filing a Warranty Claim with WinkBeds

Making a warranty claim with WinkBeds is straightforward. You can reach out to them by phone or email to start the return process.

  • Call: 1-855-WINKBED
  • Go Online: Email info@WinkBeds.com
  • What You’ll Need: WinkBeds’ customer service team will likely request a verbal or written description of the defect or damages in question, photographic evidence of the defect or damages, your name and personal identification, and your original purchase receipt.

Trial Period & Returns

All of the WinkBeds mattress models come with a 120-night trial period starting on the day your mattress is delivered. That coverage is the same whether you’re choosing the WinkBed mattress, WinkBed PlusWinkBed EcoCloud, or WinkBed GravityLux mattress. This gives you the opportunity to actually sleep on the mattress in the comfort of your own home, rather than lying on it for a few minutes in a showroom.

It can take up to a full month for your body to adjust to a new mattress, so you won’t really know if it’s the best mattress for your sleeping position, body type, or general comfort preferences until you’re past the “break-in” period.

With that in mind, WinkBeds asks you to sleep on your new mattress for at least 30 nights before you make a final decision. Even if you notice a little shoulder or lower back pain during the break-in period, we expect it should fade as your muscles and joints transition from the firmness level of your old mattress to your new one.

Besides the quality of your night’s sleep, we recommend paying close attention to a handful of performance categories during the trial period. In a mattress, you’ll ideally want good pressure relief, edge support, airflow, and temperature control. Motion transfer, or how well the mattress isolates movement from sleeping partners, will also be important if you sleep with a partner.

Prospective customers should know that the brand’s return policy only applies during the trial period. The WinkBeds Lifetime warranty protects customers against manufacturing defects even after the trial period expires. These defects include body indentations over 1.5” deep and cracks (or splits) in the bed’s foam.

How Do I Return?

WinkBeds makes returns as easy as possible, but we make it even easier with this step-by-step guide:

  1. Receive your bed-in-a-box mattress delivery, set up your WinkBeds mattress on your bed frame or box spring, and sleep on your new bed for at least 30 nights.
  2. Before the 120-night trial period ends, contact WinkBeds at info@winkbeds.com, and let them know you’d like to return your mattress. Make sure to include your original order number in your email.
  3. WinkBeds will process your return and arrange a pickup date that works for you. Pickups are typically scheduled within five days, and you don’t need to be home when your mattress is picked up. Returned mattresses are either donated to charity or recycled.
  4. You’ll receive a full refund of the price you paid for your mattress within five business days.

Addressing WinkBed Mattress Complaints

  • Poor Motion Isolation: Poor motion isolation is the most common complaint we found about the original WinkBed and WinkBed PLUS mattresses. WinkBeds has solved this problem by replacing the original micro-coil transition layer with their SupportCell foam. While the bed still has a support layer of pocketed coils, the additional foam layer noticeably improves motion isolation.
  • Sleeps Warm: The WinkBed’s hybrid construction and other cooling features should encourage the bed to sleep relatively cool, but some reviewers said it sleeps warmer than other beds they’ve tried. While the WinkBed mattress is cooler than most hybrid and all-foam beds, it’s not as cool as some innerspring or latex mattresses. Hot sleepers might consider opting for the firmer WinkBeds mattress, since the softer the model you chose, the more heat absorbing foam it will contain.
  • Worsens Back Pain: Several reviewers mentioned back pain worsening after sleeping on their WinkBeds mattress, specifically noting that the mattress felt either too soft or too firm for their needs. We actually think the WinkBed mattress is one of the best for back pain, thanks to extra lower back support built into the foam. Give your body at least 30 days to adjust to the new sleeping surface, and if the pain persists, contact WinkBeds for a firmness level exchange or return.
  • Strong Off-Gassing Smell: Some WinkBeds customers complained about a lingering off-gassing smell that lasted for a few days after the mattress was unboxed. This is typical of new products (for example, that “new car” smell). You can safely sleep on your new mattress with a slight odor, but if you’re sensitive to it, allow the mattress to air out for a few days without sheets before sleeping on it. You can also crack a window or use an air purifier to speed up the process.

Comparing Different WinkBeds Mattresses

WinkBed Mattress vs. WinkBeds GravityLux Mattress

WinkBed Mattress is Best For: WinkBeds GravityLux Mattress is Best For:
Sleepers looking for an innerspring mattress Sleepers looking for an all-foam mattress
Shoppers who sleep hot Shoppers who wanna choose their bed’s firmness level
Combination sleepers Those who share a bed, or couples

The WinkBeds GravityLux is an all-foam mattress available in three different firmness options: soft, medium, and firm. The GravityLux is designed to keep you cool as you sleep, with a TENCEL cover and AirCell foam comfort layer, which is an open-cell foam that retains less heat than traditional memory foam.

If you are a truly hot sleeper, the original WinkBed mattress will likely sleep cooler than the GravityLux—as it is an innerspring mattress—but if you are a foam fan, the GravityLux regulates temperature better than some other all-foam beds.

See our full WinkBeds GravityLux Mattress Review to learn more.

WinkBed Mattress vs. WinkBeds EcoCloud Mattress

WinkBed Mattress is Best For: WinkBeds EcoCloud Mattress is Best For:
Sleepers looking for an innerspring mattress Shoppers looking for an eco-conscious mattress
Sleepers looking to choose the firmness level of their mattress People who are looking for a mattress that minimally conforms to your body
Combination sleepers, specifically those who combo with side sleeping Shoppers looking for a firm mattress

The EcoCloud mattress is WinkBeds’ eco-conscious latex hybrid bed. Its cover is made with organic cotton and New Zealand wool, as opposed to the WinkBed’s TENCEL cover. Instead of foam, the EcoCloud has a top layer of Talalay latex over zoned innerspring coils.

The WinkBeds EcoCloud is only available in one firmness, which we rated at 6/10. It’s a great mattress for combination sleepers and for hot sleepers, as well as shoppers looking for a more eco-friendly mattress.

See our full WinkBeds EcoCloud Mattress Review to learn more.

Comparing WinkBeds to the Competition

WinkBed Mattress vs. Saatva Classic Mattress

WinkBed Mattress is Best For: Saatva Classic Mattress is Best For:
Shoppers looking for a more affordable mattress Shoppers looking for a luxury mattress
Those looking for a mattress that provides superior edge support Shoppers looking for a bed that provides motion isolation
Combination sleepers Stomach sleepers

The Saatva Classic is a luxury hybrid mattress. Like the WinkBed, it’s available in different firmness options: plush soft, luxury firm, and firm. Being a luxury mattress, the Saatva is considerably more expensive than the WinkBed, so if budget is a determining factor you might want to steer clear of the Saatva.

Additionally, we felt the WinkBed had superior edge support, while the Saatva had much better motion isolation.

Check out our WinkBed vs. Saatva Mattress Comparison to see how these two beds stack up.

WinkBed Mattress vs. Casper Original Mattress

WinkBed Mattress is Best For: Casper Original Mattress is Best For:
Shoppers looking for a hybrid mattress Shoppers looking for an all foam mattress
Hot Sleepers Couples looking for a mattress that provides excellent motion isolation
Heavy-weight sleepers People with lower back pain

The Casper Original mattress is a foam mattress made with polyfoam and memory foam layers, while the WinkBed is a hybrid mattress with foam and coils. Because of the construction differences, the WinkBed is more responsive and more cooling than the Casper. But the Casper might be a better pick for couples, as it excels in motion isolation.

Check out our WinkBeds vs. Casper Mattress Comparison to see how these two beds stack up.

WinkBed Mattress vs. DreamCloud Mattress

WinkBed Mattress is Best For: DreamCloud Mattress is Best For:
Back sleepers Shoppers looking for a longer trial period
Hot sleepers Shoppers looking for white glove delivery service
Combination sleepers who change their position frequently throughout the night Those looking for a bouncy bed to accommodate their movement at night

The DreamCloud mattress is a luxury hybrid mattress at a mid-range price point. Like the WinkBed, it showed a lot of motion transfer in our tests, so it may not be the best mattress for couples.

One thing we loved about DreamCloud is that the company offers a 365-night sleep trial, which is considerably longer than WinkBeds’ 120-night sleep trial. Also, DreamCloud offers a white-glove service, which means they will set up your new mattress and remove your old mattress—which WinkBeds doesn’t currently offer. However, both brands do offer a Lifetime warranty.

Check out our WinkBeds vs. DreamCloud Mattress Comparison to see how these two beds stack up.

WinkBed Mattress FAQs

Where are WinkBeds manufactured?

WinkBeds mattresses are handmade to order in the USA. WinkBeds has two factories, located in Watertown, Wisconsin and Orlando, Florida. All their materials are American-sourced, and WinkBeds uses CertiPUR-US certified foams in all their mattresses to ensure that their products are high-quality.

Do you need a box spring with WinkBed?

You don't need a box spring with your WinkBeds mattress, but you can use one if you like. WinkBeds sells their Adjustable WinkBase 2.0, platform foundation, and heavy duty bed frame that are designed to support the WinkBeds mattresses, but any sturdy bed frame or box spring should work well with your WinkBed.

Is WinkBeds a good mattress?

Everyone has different needs, but overall the WinkBed is a good mattress for combination sleepers and for hot sleepers, because of its responsiveness and cooling capabilities. Additionally, having different firmness options makes the WinkBed a good mattress for a wider variety of sleepers.

The Nerd’s Take: What’s the Bottom Line?

The WinkBed is a solid mid-range hybrid mattress. With some great features like temperature regulation, strong edge support, and responsive materials, as well as having a variety of firmnesses to choose from, the WinkBed will work well for a wide variety of sleepers.
