How Does the WinkBeds GravityLux Mattress Feel?

The GravityLux comes in three firmness levels: soft, medium, and firm. On our 1–10 firmness scale, the soft is 4/10, the medium is 5/10, and the firm is 7/10, with 10 being the firmest. This selection provides an option to almost anyone regardless of their body type or sleeping style.

According to, the soft version is designed for side sleepers and those wanting to feel like they’re sleeping on a cloud, the medium mimics a luxury hotel mattress and balances contouring comfort and support, and the firm version suits people who want to sleep on top of the bed but not on a hard surface.

Keep in mind that firmness is subjective. For example, petite individuals typically experience mattresses firmer than they’re described by the brand, while plus-size shoppers almost always find mattresses softer than described. As a general guide, lightweight and strict side sleepers will enjoy the soft option, average-weight and strict back sleepers will enjoy the medium, and strict stomach sleepers and those who like a firm mattress will appreciate the firm version.

If you tend to sleep hot but like the feel of an all-foam mattress, the GravityLux could be a good choice. Its Eucalyptus-derived TENCEL cover has an airy, stretchy feel, and it’s tufted with 2” of premium cooling gel foam that helps prevent heat retention

The AirCell foam in the bed’s comfort portion is also great for people who experience heat on foam beds. It’s not temperature-sensitive like traditional memory foam, so it dissipates body heat faster and its open-cell design helps disperse heat throughout the mattress to keep you cool.

Still, it won’t sleep as cool as a bed with breathable springs. Check out our list of the best cooling mattresses for more.

One of the most important things to keep in mind with an all-foam bed is that it should feel comfortable while also offering support. It’s not uncommon for people to experience excellent pressure relief when they first lie down on a foam bed only to later feel discomfort from spinal misalignment caused by too much give. As such, one major pro of the GravityLux is that it has great pressure relief and full body support.

The key materials responsible for creating this balance are the AirCell memory foam comfort layer and the Progression Foam transitional layer. The AirCell has air capsules that absorb shock, so it can alleviate pressure and push back lightly against the body for dynamic support. The Progression Foam is zoned, meaning that it’s firmer in some areas (the hips and low back) and softer in other areas (the shoulders).

This type of zoned support is excellent for encouraging spinal alignment. The bed also has above-average edge support for a foam mattress and dense, durable materials, making it a good mattress for couples.

Back Sleepers

The medium version of the GravityLux is ideal for most strict back sleepers, though those who like a very lifted feel may enjoy the firm GravityLux. The best mattresses for back sleepers offer some pressure relief and cradle the shoulders and fill the small curve beneath the lumbar spine while also keeping the body lifted in an even plane.

The GravityLux’s tufted cover and AirCell comfort layer offer just the right amount of give for comfort, while the zoned transitional layer and firm support core ensure the hips and shoulders stay properly aligned without putting too much pressure on them.

Keep in mind that the medium GravityLux may not work for all back sleepers. Lightweight back sleepers may prefer the softer option, while heavyweight sleepers may appreciate the firmer model. Most average-weight back sleepers should find the perfect balance of lift and pressure relief on the medium GravityLux.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleeping comes with its own unique challenges and needs. While on your stomach, it’s essential to make sure you aren’t sinking into the mattress as your hips. As such, durability, edge to edge support, and the density of the foams in the comfort layer are essential factors for stomach sleepers to consider.

The GravityLux earns high marks in all these categories, especially in the firm version, making it an especially good choice for average-weight and heavyweight stomach sleepers. Lightweight stomach sleepers should be able to find the firmness they need on the medium version. For more great options, see the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.

Side Sleepers

If you sleep on your side, it’s important to select a mattress that will prevent shoulder pain and lower back pain that can be caused if a mattress is unsupportive, doesn’t contour to the shape of your body, or sinks too deeply. The best mattress for side sleepers will allow you to press deeper into the mattress at the hip and shoulder joints to encourage proper spinal alignment.

The soft GravityLux could be a nice choice for this, especially for average-weight and heavyweight sleepers. We don’t recommend the soft GravityLux for most lightweight side sleepers as its dense, more responsive feel may prevent petite body types from pressing deeply enough into the bed to experience pressure relief

The vast majority of side sleepers prefer a viscous, sinking feel, so if that’s what you’re after, the GravityLux may not be right for you. It’s a better choice for side sleepers who like a supportive feel or change positions at night.

Combination Sleepers

If you switch positions at night, you need a mattress that offers enough bounce and responsiveness to make it easy to change position. It’s also crucial to select a mattress with a firmness level that accommodates the two or three positions you switch between. Body weight is also an important factor, as different firmness levels feel distinct to people who are petite, average, and heavyweight.

The more-reponsive-than-average top layer should prevent you from feeling stuck in the mattress, and the zoned transition layer and dense support core will encourage spinal alignment, enhanced edge support, and long-term durability, no matter what positions you switch between.

We recommend choosing the firmness level of your GravityLux based on this mattress firmness article, but as a general guide, lightweight sleepers should select the soft, average-weight sleepers should try the medium, and most heavyweight sleepers will do well on the firm.

Does It Fit Your Lifestyle?

Back Pain

If you struggle with chronic back pain, sleep is key for recovery and pain relief, and an unsupportive mattress can exacerbate aches. The key ingredients to look for in a mattress if you struggle with back pain are excellent support to encourage spinal alignment for your sleep position and the right amount of contouring to bring deep pressure relief for any tender areas.

The zoned transitional layer in the GravityLux is excellent for back pain sufferers as it will help keep the spine and joints aligned throughout the night to promote relaxation and prevent strain. Since all three firmness levels offer a dense, supportive feel, we think strict back sleepers with back pain across various weight categories will benefit most from this feature.

It’s important to keep in mind that the GravityLux doesn’t offer the deep contouring usually found in memory foam mattresses, so if your back pain is usually best relieved from a deep hug and extensive cushioning, the GravityLux won’t be the best choice for you. See the best mattresses for back pain for other options.

For most couples, the ideal mattress can suit two different body types and sleeping styles, minimize motion transfer and noise, offer great durability and edge support, and perform well for sex. The GravityLux performs well nearly across the board in these categories, making it a great mattress for couples, especially those who enjoy dense, supportive foam mattresses

The bed’s all-foam construction enables it to distill motion, so you shouldn’t feel too much movement as your partner changes positions.

It also has excellent edge support when compared to other all-foam mattresses, thanks to the responsiveness of the AirFoam layer and the pushback from the transition layer and the support core. When you sit or lie down near the edges of the mattress, you shouldn’t feel insecure, and couples should feel great using the full surface area of the bed.

Construction: What’s Under the Surface?

The GravityLux is a foam mattress that’s constructed with a tufted cover, proprietary memory foam, a zoned transition layer, and a high-density support core. It measures 12” tall and comes in soft, medium, and firm settings. While each version has a unique feel, sleepers will experience light bounce, generous lift throughout the body, light contouring, and a supported, durable feel on all three.

Layer #1: Tufted TENCEL Cover: The top of the GravityLux is a white, tufted cover made from TENCEL, which is a stretchy, breathable material. The cover has 2” of premium cooling gel foam sewn into it, which provides initial pressure relief on the mattress and encourages cooling.

Layer #2: 3”AirCell Foam: This 3” comfort layer is WinkBeds’ patented memory foam. It’s an open-cell foam that has a more responsive feel than traditional memory foam, with shock-absorbing air capsules that helps alleviate pressure and an open-cell design that mitigates heat buildup.

Layer #3: 3” Progression Foam: Progression Foams is the GravityLux’s transition layer. The foam is zoned, meaning that it offers enhanced support and firmness at the hips and lumbar spine while offering more give at the shoulders. This varied level of softness is intended to enhance healthy spinal alignment for all sleeping positions.

Layer #4: ATLAS Core Foam: The ATLAS Core foam is WinkBeds’ support foam, and it’s a high-density polyfoam with sag-proof features. It has a 1.8 lb. density that encourages durability.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

The WinkBeds GravityLux mattress ships free to addresses in the contiguous U.S. White glove delivery, which typically includes in-home setup and old mattress removal, is not available at this time. The GravityLux ships free via UPS ground and should arrive in four to eight business days.

As a bed-in-the-box online mattress company, WinkBeds ships all its mattresses rolled and compressed in a 20” x 20” x 44” cardboard box. The box should be easy to maneuver into your house or apartment. To unbox it, bring it into the room where you plan on setting up the mattress, remove the bed from the box and the plastic wrap, unroll it, and allow it to expand for up to 72 hours before sleeping on it.

Every WinkBeds mattress is covered by WinkBeds’ Limited Lifetime Warranty for the full period of the original owner’s use. The warranty protects against indentations in the foam greater than 1.5” deep as well as cracking or splitting of the materials. If a defect is found, WinkBeds will replace your defective mattress with a new WinkBeds mattress in the same model and size at no charge to you.

Keep in mind that, in order for the warranty to apply, you’ll need to use the GravityLux on a rigid, non-flexible surface or bed frame with center support. You’re also responsible for returning the bed and showing original proof of purchase if a defect is discovered. WinkBeds may request photo evidence of the defect instead, but you’ll be responsible for shipping costs associated with returning the mattress.

If a defect is confirmed by WinkBeds, the company will assume all transportation costs associated with returning and replacing the bed.

Trial Period & Returns

WinkBeds offers a simple, straightforward 120-night sleep trial period for all its mattresses. You have a 120-night period to try the mattress in your home once it arrives, and if you don’t love it, WinkBeds will issue a full refund and arrange pickup for free.

WinkBeds does ask that you sleep on the mattress for at least 30 nights prior to making a decision. If you exchange the GravityLux for another model during the sleep trial period, you’ll receive a 60-night trial on the second mattress.

WinkBeds GravityLux Mattress FAQs

Can I flip my WinkBed GravityLux mattress?

No. The GravityLux mattress is not designed to be flippable. The comfort layers should stay on top and the support layer should stay on the bottom. If you want to extend GravityLux’s life, we recommend rotating it from head to foot every few months.

How long will my GravityLux mattress last?

Most quality all-foam mattresses last seven to eight years. Based on the quality of the GravityLux’s materials, the responsiveness of the top comfort foam and zoned transition layer, and its above-average edge support, we anticipate it will last longer (eight to 10 years).

Is the GravityLux a good mattress?

The GravityLux by WinkBeds is an excellent mattress for all-foam bed shoppers who typically sleep hot on foam beds, like a lightly bouncy, supportive feel, and want to choose their firmness level. It’s available in soft, medium, and firm settings and has features that encourage spinal alignment.

Comparing the WinkBeds GravityLux Mattress

WinkBeds GravityLux Mattress vs. WinkBed

The original WinkBed is WinkBeds’ flagship bed, and it’s a coil-on-coil mattress with a hybrid design. It has comfort layers over transitional foam-encased pocketed coils and a pocketed coil support core. Like the GravityLux, the WinkBed is available in three firmness levels

We recommend the WinkBed for sleepers who like responsiveness and an innerspring feel, and the GravityLux is best for those who like a supportive foam bed with moderate conforming and pressure relief

WinkBeds is a family-owned operation that focuses on details to attract customers to their luxury mattresses, which are made to order in Wisconsin. The company believes so strongly in their mattress quality, that they attach a lifetime warranty to them.

WinkBeds GravityLux Mattress vs. WinkBed Plus

The WinkBeds Plus is a heavy duty hybrid mattress that’s designed to meet the needs of sleepers who weigh more than 300 pounds. Technically a riff on the original WinkBed mattress, it replaces the microcoils found in the WinkBed’s comfort layer with latex foam, which enhances the lift, support, and durability required by heavier body types.

As an innerspring mattress, the WinkBed Plus offers even better responsiveness and edge support than the GravityLux. And, like the original WinkBed, it also sleeps cooler. We recommend the WinkBed Plus for large body types who need a reliably supportive mattress. The GravityLux is best for foam mattress shoppers who like a firm, supportive surface with some contouring.

WinkBeds Plus

The WinkBed Plus is a hybrid bed with pocketed coils designed specifically for plus-size sleepers or for couples who are looking for a little extra support. The bed balances a supportive feel with pressure relief that's great for back pain. WinkBed provides free shipping and a 120-day return policy.

WinkBeds GravityLux Mattress vs. Saatva Classic

The Saatva Classic is Saatva’s flagship mattress, and it’s a high-quality, modern take on the classic innerspring bed. It has a euro pillow top and comfort layers of memory foam and polyfoam. It also contains a layer of coils. Similar to the GravityLux, you can choose from three firmness levels: plush, luxury firm, and firm.

If you’re a hot sleeper or like the feel of a traditional innerspring, we recommend the Saatva Classic. It also comes with free white glove delivery, which can appeal to those who like a luxury shopping experience. The GravityLux is a better choice for people who are set on an all foam mattress and like a dense foam feel with light bounce rather than a truly springy, innerspring bed.

Saatva Classic

Saatva is one of the first direct-to-consumer online mattress companies. The Saatva mattress is not a “bed-in-a-box” company, because it doesn’t come in a box at all. It’s a regular innerspring mattress delivered to your door by delivery professionals.

WinkBeds GravityLux Mattress vs. GhostBed Luxe

The GhostBed Luxe is a memory foam mattress with a 5/10 firmness level. It’s constructed with a quilted cover, Phase Change Material, gel memory foam, and high-density polyfoam. The GhostBed Luxe excels in minimizing motion transfer for couples, and the Phase Change Material and fiber padding enhance its breathability and make it an exceptionally cool all-foam mattress.

Compared to the GravityLux, the GhostBed Luxe has more of the plush, viscous feel that you’d expect from a memory foam mattress. If you like sleeping “in” your mattress, you’ll prefer the GhostBed Luxe, but if you like a lifted, more supportive feel, you’ll like the GravityLux. The GhostBed Luxe only comes in one firmness level, and it’s priced several hundred dollars higher than the GravityLux

GhostBed Luxe

Considered one of the best cooling memory foam mattresses on the market, the GhostBed Luxe is a great option for sleepers who love the feel of memory foam but tend to sleep hot.

WinkBeds GravityLux Mattress vs. Nectar

The Nectar is a popular foam bed-in-a-box mattress known for its low price point and deep body cradle. It has a traditional memory foam feel that people who like the viscous, sinking sand sensation of memory foam will love.

Both the GravityLux and the Nectar alleviate pressure well, but if you want deep pressure point relief, we recommend the Nectar. Since the Nectar only comes in one firmness level (medium-firm), those with different preferences will find one of the GravityLux models more comfortable. The Nectar, however, is a high-value pick, so it appeals to budget shoppers.

The Nectar is an affordable quality mattress with an excellent trial period. It suits all types of sleepers, couples and people who love sleeping on memory foam.

See our full Nectar Mattress Review to learn more.

  • Light bounce in the top layer. The design of the comfort layer will allow sleepers to move easily in and out of the bed and to change positions on top of it. This is great for people who are combination sleepers and like the sensation of sleeping “on” their mattress.
  • Firmness options. The GravityLux is available in soft, medium, and firm options, a selection that should accommodate most sleepers regardless of sleeping position, preferences, and weight. If you’re unsure of the firmness that’s right for you, a customer service representative from the company can help.
  • Sleepers cooler than most all-foam beds. Temperature issues are one of the major drawbacks of most foam mattresses, but the GravityLux successfully mitigates heat buildup with a breathable TENCEL cover, open-cell foams, and firmness levels that encourage above-average airflow.

  • Moderate pressure relief. If you’re someone who associates foam beds with a deep sinking, viscous feel, you won’t find that in the GravityLux. Though it does offer some pressure relief in the top layers, the overall vibe of the bed is lifted, supportive, and dense, which may make it uncomfortable for people who like the sensation of sinking into their mattress.
  • Above-average price point. Compared to other all-foam beds, the GravityLux is expensive. If you’re shopping for a budget-friendly option, check out our list of the best affordable mattresses.

What’s the Bottom Line?

The GravityLux is a great choice for sleepers who want an all-foam bed with more responsiveness, cooling, and durability than is usually found in foam mattresses. It’s also a great pick for people who are unsure of their ideal firmness level, since it comes in three firmness options that are broad enough to suit most sleeper types.

We also recommend it for couples and those who normally sleep hot on all-foam mattresses; the bed is virtually silent, minimizes most motion transfer, and has great edge support for partners, and its open-cell foam and cooling cover allow it to sleep exceptionally cool compared to other all-foam beds.
