WinkBeds vs. Puffy Mattress Comparison

Deciding between the luxury hybrid WinkBed mattress and the cloud-like Puffy memory foam mattress? Let us help with this in-depth WinkBeds vs. Puffy mattress comparison.

Comparing WinkBeds Mattress & Puffy Mattress

The WinkBed and Puffy mattresses have a lot of obvious differences that make them better suited to different kinds of sleepers. The WinkBed is an innerspring mattress with a foam pillow top. The springy feel and breathable construction of the WinkBed is best suited to back sleepers, hot sleepers, and combination sleepers. The Puffy is a relatively simple all-foam mattress with gel-infused comfort layers. It’s a better choice for side sleepers and couples concerned about motion transfer.

  • The WinkBed closely resembles a traditional innerspring mattress, so it’s going to feel a lot bouncier than the all-foam Puffy. We expect that users will sleep “on” the WinkBed, but sleep “in” the Puffy.
  • Even though the Puffy mattress features cooling gel in the two top layers, it’s not as breathable as the WinkBed. That means it’s going to retain a bit more of your body heat.
  • As an all-foam mattress, the Puffy isolates motion a lot better than the WinkBed. The spring coils that make up the base layer of the WinkBed absorb motion well, but they also release the tension when you change position, which can jostle the mattress.
  • The WinkBed is available in three different firmness options that cater to different sleeping positions and comfort preferences. We’re focusing on the Luxury Firm model, but you can also choose a Softer or Firmer version. The Puffy mattress is only available in a medium-firm feel.

  • Both of these mattresses have a medium-firm feel that strikes a balance between support and comfort.
  • The comfort layers on both mattresses are infused with gel, which absorbs excess body heat and keeps the mattress closer to a neutral temperature.

Who the WinkBeds Mattress is Best For

Best For…

  • Hot sleepers should experience lots of breathability throughout the coil base layer, which prevents heat from building up in the mattress.
  • Combination sleepers benefit from the buoyancy and responsiveness of the WinkBed’s springy coils.
  • Back sleepers enjoy full body support and the cushioning comfort of a plush pillow top.

May Not be Best For…

  • Side sleepers should instead look for a medium or medium-soft mattress that will enable their pressure points to sink deeper into the bed.
  • Budget shoppers will find the WinkBed’s pricing to be in line with its luxury label, and should instead look for the best value mattresses.

Who the Puffy Mattress is Best For

Best For…

  • Lightweight and average-weight side sleepers experience just enough sinkage on the Puffy to alleviate strain on their pressure points.
  • Couples are unlikely to be disrupted by motion transfer from one side of the mattress to another, thanks to the three motion isolating foam layers.
  • Back sleepers benefit from the bed’s balance of cushioning and spinal support.

May Not be Best For…

  • Stomach sleepers need a firmer mattress that can keep their hips in line with their shoulders; otherwise, they could develop lower back pain.
  • Combination sleepers may find the Puffy a little slow to respond to their changes in sleeping position.

Deciding Between WinkBeds & Puffy

Firmness / Feel

Mattress companies rate the firmness level of their mattresses using a firmness scale that ranges from one to 10. The firmer the mattress, the higher the number. Even so, mattress firmness is subjective. For example, lightweight individuals tend to experience mattresses as firmer than advertised simply because they don’t sink as deeply into the layers. The opposite is true for heavyweight individuals.

With that said, we think the WinkBed and Puffy mattresses are both right around 6.5/10, which is medium-firm. They provide a good balance of support and cushioning comfort. The Puffy feels denser when you press into the mattress, while the WinkBed feels more springy.

WinkBeds Performance By Sleeping Position:
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  5 5 4
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): 5 5 4
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  4 4 3
Puffy Performance By Sleeping Position:
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  4 3 5
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): 3 3 4
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  2 2 3

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation is really only important if you plan to share your bed. Typically, all-foam mattresses do a better job in this category. That’s because foam layers absorb movement, while coils are bouncy. In this comparison, the Puffy reduces motion transfer the best, which makes it a better choice for couples or light sleepers who share their bed.

Edge Support

Mattresses with good edge support enable you to use the entire surface of the bed. They also keep you lifted when you sit on the edge of the mattress. Edge support isn’t an important category for everyone, but it can make a big difference if you’re sharing a smaller sized mattress. We didn’t feel like we’d roll off either mattress, but we felt especially well supported on the WinkBed, probably thanks to heavy duty coils around the perimeter of the mattress.

Pressure Relief

The best mattresses for side sleepers are those with lots of pressure relief. This category isn’t as important for stomach sleepers, who need a firm mattress that can elevate the hips in line with the shoulders. Even though both of these mattresses are medium to medium firm, the top layers of the Puffy allow for a little more sinkage, which is better for side sleepers.

Spine Alignment

If you want to avoid back pain, pay attention to spinal alignment. This category indicates how well a mattress keeps your back in a neutral position while lying on the bed. If you sleep on your side, you want your spine to form a straight line. On your stomach or back, you want your spine to maintain its natural “S” curve. The Puffy does a better job at ensuring spinal alignment in side sleepers, and both mattresses perform about the same for back sleepers and stomach sleepers. Check out our recommendations for the best mattress for back pain.

Memory foam mattresses last between eight to 10 years, while innerspring mattresses last closer to five to seven years. As such, the Puffy is the more durable option, but mattress durability also depends on frequency of use. Additionally, both mattresses are protected by Lifetime warranties, both of which protect against various manufacturing defects that can crop up with age.

Mattresses stay cool if they have a breathable construction and temperature regulating features like gel-infused foam. The WinkBed mattress incorporates both. The coil base layer enables lots of airflow, and the foam pillow top is infused with cooling gel. Puffy aims to keep their mattress cool by adding gel to both the first and second foam layers. Still, our team thinks the WinkBed is the cooler option. If you are a hot sleeper, check out our picks for the best cooling mattresses.

Comfort Layer  Euro pillow top
Support Layer Pocketed coils and Extra-Edge Support System
Mattress Thickness  13.5”

The WinkBed is wrapped in a breathable, moisture-wicking TENCEL cover that’s derived from eco-friendly eucalyptus. The cover is quilted with a 2” euro pillow top (3” in the Softer version) that’s made of cooling Hypersoft foam. (The old mattress model had microcoils instead of foam.) An extra polyfoam layer in the center third of the mattress enhances lower back support. The base layer of innerspring coils is strategically divided into ergonomic support zones.

It’s also infused with gel to improve temperature regulation. The transition layer is Puffy’s Climate Comfort foam, which is much more responsive and prevents you from sinking too far into the mattress. Our Final Take

Overall, we’d recommend either bed to back sleepers, but only the WinkBed to hot sleepers and combination sleepers. On the flip side, we’d only recommend the Puffy to couples and side sleepers (unless you consider the Softer version of the WinkBed mattress). Neither mattress is ideal for stomach sleepers, but the Firmer WinkBed could be a good fit. If budget is important, remember that the WinkBed is a luxury mattress, so you’ll pay less for the Puffy.
