Is the Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress for You?

Who’s Going to Love the Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress

  • Combination sleepers
  • Hot sleepers
  • Those with back pain

Who Should Steer Clear of the Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress

  • Heavyweight stomach sleepers—instead, the Helix Plus mattress does a better job of supporting heavier stomach sleepers.
  • Light sleepers concerned about motion transfer—instead, the Casper Wave Hybrid mattress does an excellent job of isolating motion from the other side of the mattress.
  • Budget shoppers—instead, the standard Helix Midnight mattress is a lower cost option with similar features to the Helix Midnight Luxe.

The Nerd’s Take: What’s the Bottom Line?

The Helix Midnight Luxe is a luxury mattress with high-quality materials. It offers tons of airflow, lumbar support, and great pressure relief, which works for all sleep positions, but heavier stomach sleepers should search for a firmer bed. You also get a 100-night sleep trial and a 15-year limited warranty.

Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress Video Review

Time to put on those spectacles because we have a video review of the Helix Midnight Luxe for those of you visual learners.

Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress Firmness and Feel

Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress Firmness

At Mattress Nerd, our firmness scale ranges from 1–10, where 1 is the softest mattress you can imagine and 10 is the firmest. The Helix Midnight Luxe is a 6/10 on this scale, making it medium-firm. This works best for the average side and back sleeper.

What Does the Helix Midnight Luxe Feel Like?

The Midnight Luxe has a cushioning feel, but the foam doesn’t contour to every inch of your frame. You sink into the foam a little, but not too far. The coils keep you lifted and add bounce to the feel of the mattress.

Which Sleeping Position Is the Helix Midnight Luxe Best For?

Body Type:BACK SLEEPERSSTOMACH SLEEPERSSIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): 544
Average-weight (130–230 lbs):544
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): 434

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers need a mattress that allows their spines to stay neutral—the natural curve your spine would have if you were standing up straight. The Helix mattress supports back sleepers of all body types, including lightweight and average-weight. Heavyweight sleepers will stay supported and comfortable, but the feel may be too soft for some heavier sleepers.

To learn more, see the best mattresses for back sleepers.

Stomach Sleepers

Overall, stomach sleepers need a firm mattress that is super supportive. The Midnight Luxe is supportive and firm enough for lightweight and average-weight stomach sleepers. Heavyweight stomach sleepers may want to hunt for a firmer mattress, such as the Helix Plus or the Helix Twilight Luxe, or check out the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.

Side Sleepers

The best mattresses for side sleepers keep your spine in a straight line from the base of your neck to your tailbone (when viewed from the side) and relieve pressure on the hips and shoulders. The Midnight Luxe offers great alignment to sleepers of all sizes. It also offers great pressure point relief for average-weight and heavyweight side sleepers, but lightweight side sleepers may see some pressure buildup in their hips.

Combination Sleepers

The best mattresses for combination sleepers will be easy to move around on and work for all positions that you sleep in. This Helix mattress will be good for lightweight to average-weight combination sleepers, but heavyweight sleepers may sink down a little more and have more difficulty moving around.

Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress Performance

Is The Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress Cooling?

The Midnight Luxe features tons of breathable layers, from the TENCEL cover to the pocketed coils. The thick pillow top and foam layers may hold on to some heat, but the airflow this mattress provides will keep you temperature-neutral at night. For even cooler options, check out the best cooling mattresses.

Edge Support

Edge support refers to the level of support you get around the perimeter of the mattress. If you sleep near the edge of the bed, sit there to get ready in the morning, or have mobility issues, you’re going to want a mattress with great edge support. Luckily, the Midnight Luxe has reinforced edges that provide excellent support.

Responsiveness

A mattress’s responsiveness refers to how easy the bed is to move around on and how well it responds to your movements. This is important if you often change positions or use your mattress for sex. The coils in the Helix Midnight Luxe make it pretty bouncy and easy to move on. Heavier people may sink a bit more and have a harder time moving around.

Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?

When you sleep with a partner, pet, or child, the last thing you probably want is their movements transferring across the mattress and waking you up. We found that the Helix’s thick foams and pocketed coils do a decent job at preventing motion transfer, but it’s nothing special—pretty average. For better options, see the best mattresses for couples.

Noise

Any bed with coils has the potential to be squeaky and loud, but thanks to the layers of foam, the Midnight Luxe is a pretty quiet mattress.

Pain Relief

There are usually three big areas of concern when it comes to pain relief on your mattress: your hips, shoulders, and lower back. When we used our pressure map (which uses heat mapping technology to indicate pressure distribution along the body), we saw great pressure relief in all of these areas from most types of sleepers.

The only red flag we caught was in the hips of our lightweight tester. So, if you’re on the more petite side and suffer from hip pain, that’s something to be aware of.

Sex

A good mattress for sex is quiet, responsive, durable, and cooling. The Helix Midnight Luxe mattress checks all of these boxes.

Off-Gassing

Off-gassing refers to the non-toxic “new-can-of-paint smell” you may experience when you first open a mattress that includes foams. We found that the Midnight Luxe has a pretty strong off-gassing odor after unboxing. After airing out the mattress for about a day, the smell went away.

Durability

The Helix Midnight Luxe is made with pretty durable materials, such as thick foams and steel coils. Plus, it has great edge support, which is a good indicator of durability.

Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress Construction: What’s it made of?

The Helix Midnight Luxe is one of the six Luxe models Helix offers. The Luxe mattresses are luxury upgrades from the six standard Helix models, each with a different firmness level. See how the construction of the Midnight Luxe impacts performance, and if it isn’t for you, try out the Helix Sleep Quiz at helixsleep.com to find one that suits you better.

Layer #1 Pillow Top: The padded top layer features a breathable cover made from TENCEL, which improves airflow to keep you cool.

Layer #2 Responsive Foam Comfort Layer: This foam has a medium firmness, allowing for proper pressure relief without feeling like you’re sinking into the surface, with a faster response time than traditional memory foam.

Layper #3 Copper Gel Memory Foam Comfort Layer: Copper fibers help prevent body heat retention in the foam, versus traditional memory foam. This foam layer, coupled with the foam layer above, adds to the thick cushion you’ll sleep directly on.

Layer #4 “Memory Plus Foam” Transition Layer: This foam layer helps you seamlessly transition to the coil layer (without feeling the coils, of course).

Layer #5 Zoned Coil Support Layer: Here we have 1,000+ pocketed coils that zoned, meaning they are designed to be softer at your head and feet, but firmer in the middle for great spinal alignment. These offer a ton of support as well as some extra bounce, breathability, and edge support.

Layer #6 “DuraDense” Foam Base Layer: This small layer of dense foam provides a good surface for the coils to rest and contributes to the overall durability of the mattress.

How Do the Helix Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

The Helix Midnight Luxe ships free and arrives at your door as a bed-in-a-box mattress. It should arrive within three to 10 business days. It took our team just under two minutes to unbox the mattress and remove the plastic. We found this bed to be very heavy, so I definitely recommend using a partner to help you unbox it.

Warranty

The Helix Midnight Luxe comes with a 15-year warranty. The Helix mattress warranty covers:

  • The original purchaser only
  • Indentations greater than 1”
  • Splits or cracks due to a manufacturing error
  • Any defects in the cover

Make sure to use a bed frame that properly supports the mattress, or you risk voiding your warranty. This includes box springs, foundations, or slatted platform beds where the slats are 5” apart or less.

Trial Period & Returns

All Helix mattresses come with a 100-night sleep trial period, which is the industry standard. This means you have up to 100 nights to try out your new mattress before the return period ends. Helix does ask that you take at least 30 nights before initiating a return so you have time to break in the mattress.

If you do decide to return the Midnight Luxe, reach out to customer service to walk you through the process. They’ll have someone come pick your mattress up, and you’ll receive a full refund after removal.

Addressing Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress Complaints

Not Firm Enough or Too Firm

There are a mix of reviews from people who either found the Midnight Luxe too firm or too soft. Because this is a medium-firm mattress, that feedback is to be expected. Average-weight sleepers are likely to consider the Midnight Luxe medium-firm, while lightweight sleepers may think it has a firm feel and heavyweight sleepers may think it has a softer feel. This is the perfect time to take advantage of the exchanges offered during the sleep trial.

Causes Joint Pain

A few reviewers said that this mattress gave them joint pain, specifically in the hips. When we tested pressure relief on this bed, we noticed a slight buildup in the hips of our lighter testers’ shoulders. If you are on the lighter side, you may want to check out the best mattresses for hip pain.

Comparing Different Helix Mattresses

Helix Midnight Luxe vs. Helix Midnight

Helix Midnight Luxe is best for:Helix Midnight is best for:
Luxury shoppersBudget shoppers
Combination sleepersCouples
Back sleepersSide sleepers

The Midnight Luxe is the Luxe version of the original Helix Midnight. The OG Midnight offers even better pressure relief and motion isolation, but the Midnight Luxe sleeps cooler and is easier to move around on. Both beds come with a 100-night sleep trial, but the Luxe has a 15-year warranty, compared with the original’s 10-year warranty.

Helix Midnight Luxe vs. Helix Sunset Luxe

Helix Midnight Luxe is best for:Helix Sunset Luxe is best for:
Firm mattress loversSoft mattress lovers
Combination sleepersCouples
Back sleepersSide sleepers

The Helix Sunset Luxe is the softer version of the Midnight Luxe. It’s made to be pressure-relieving enough for side sleepers who prefer a softer feel, but it could also work for lightweight or average-weight back sleepers. Stomach sleepers and heavier folks should stick with the Midnight Luxe. Also, you’ll sink deeper into the foams atop the Sunset Luxe, so it’s probably not the best fit for hot sleepers.

Helix Midnight Luxe vs. Helix Twilight Luxe

Helix Midnight Luxe is best for:Helix Twilight Luxe is best for:
Medium mattress loversFirm mattress lovers
Combination sleepersHot sleepers
Back sleepersStomach sleepers

The Helix Twilight Luxe is the firmer version of the Midnight Luxe mattress. It has a 7.5/10 firmness, compared with the 6/10 for the Midnight Luxe. The Twilight Luxe was made to support and relieve pressure for side sleepers who prefer a firmer feel, but we think it’s best for back sleepers and stomach sleepers under 230 lbs. Side sleepers will experience more pressure relief on the Midnight Luxe.

Comparing Helix to the Competition

Helix Midnight Luxe vs. Saatva Classic

Helix Midnight Luxe is best for:Saatva Classic is best for:
Medium-firmMultiple firmness levels
Combination sleepersPeople with back pain
Back sleepersStomach sleepers

The Saatva Classic is an affordable luxury mattress with a similar construction to the Helix Midnight Luxe. The biggest difference is that the Saatva has two coil layers instead of one. This gives it the best edge support we’ve ever seen. It’s also offered in Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm, whereas the Midnight Luxe has one firmness level.

The Midnight Luxe is a bit better for side sleepers, unless you get the Plush Soft Saatva. Stomach sleepers should opt for the Firm Saatva, and back sleepers could go either way. The Saatva costs a few hundred dollars less than the Midnight Luxe, and it comes with a 180-night trial period, 15-year warranty, and free white glove delivery.

Helix Midnight Luxe vs. DreamCloud Premier

Helix Midnight Luxe is best for:DreamCloud Premier is best for:
Combination sleepersAverage-weight sleepers
Hot sleepersHotel bed lovers
Back sleepersSide sleepers

The DreamCloud Premier is also a luxury hybrid mattress that includes a pillow top in its construction. While the DreamCloud works better for the average side sleeper, the Midnight Luxe dominates in the cooling department.

Otherwise, the beds are fairly similar. This includes pricing, but DreamCloud often offers discounts that cut hundreds off the mattress price. It also comes with a 365-night trial period and Lifetime warranty.

Helix Midnight Luxe vs. WinkBed

Helix Midnight Luxe is best for:The WinkBed is best for:
Luxury shoppersBudget shoppers
Combination sleepersMultiple firmness options
Back sleepersStomach sleepers

The WinkBed is also a pillow top hybrid mattress, but it’s available in three firmness options—soft, medium-firm, and firm—in addition to the WinkBed Plus, which is for heavyweight sleepers.

Because of the firmness options available, it works for every body type and sleeping position, but remember that Helix also makes their hybrid mattress in different firmness levels, including one for heavier folks. As such, you decision may come down to price. The WinkBed is a little more affordable, and it comes with a 120-night trial period and Lifetime warranty.
