Who the Layla Mattress is Best For

Best For…

  • People who prefer memory foam or generally soft foams: The Layla has a fluffy, airy feel that’s less viscous than memory foam and less neutral than polyfoam. If you like soft beds that don’t let you sink too deeply, we think you’ll like the Layla.
  • Shoppers who want a flippable mattress: If you like the idea of getting two beds in one, the Layla can be flipped to achieve a different firmness level at any point in time.
  • Side sleepers: The soft side of the Layla allows you to sink in this position, eliminating almost all pressure at the hip and shoulder joints.

May Not be Best For…

  • Plus-size sleepers: Even on the firmer side, the Layla simply doesn’t have enough support to provide plus-size body types with healthy spinal alignment.
  • Couples who need great bounce or edge support: The Layla’s construction prioritizes pressure relief, so you sleep “in” the mattress. Unfortunately, this means the bed has hardly any bounce for sex, and the perimeter is prone to sinking, which may prove troublesome for couples who share a Queen-size mattress.

Who the Tuft & Needle Mattress is Best For

Best For…

  • Shoppers on a tight budget: Although both beds are affordable, the T&N has a very low price point compared to the Layla and similar memory foam mattresses.
  • People who like a balance of conforming and support: The bed’s top polyfoam comfort layer is responsive compared to other foam bed top layers, giving the sleeper a mixed feeling of sleeping “on” and “in” the mattress.

May Not be Best For…

  • Plus-size sleepers: The bed’s construction and firmness level is best for people who weigh less than 230 pounds.
  • Memory foam lovers: If you want that signature, sinking sand memory foam feel, you won’t find it in the Tuft & Needle.

Deciding Between Tuft & Needle and Layla

Firmness / Feel

The mattresses have both distinct feels and different firmness levels. The Layla feels like a fluffy, airy foam mattress that’s not quite as viscous as a traditional memory foam bed. The Tuft & Needle, on the other hand, has a neutral foam feel that doesn’t feel distinctly like memory foam or latex.

The Layla’s soft side is roughly a 4/10 on the 1–10 firmness scale, making it an excellent choice for people who are lightweight, are strict side sleepers, or really want pressure relief. The firm side of the Layla and the Tuft & Needle have similar firmness levels, but we’d say the Tuft & Needle is just a hair softer than the Layla. This makes it fine for all sleeping positions, so could work well for a guest bedroom.

Tuft & Needle Performance By Sleeping Position:
Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  4 4 2
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): 4 3 3
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  3 2 2
Layla Performance By Sleeping Position:
Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  4 3 4
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): 3 3 4
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  2 2 3

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Motion Isolation

The beds have similar motion transfer performance in that they’re on par with other all-foam beds. You shouldn’t feel too much movement from a partner, especially on the soft side of the Layla. Check out other great mattresses for couples.

Edge Support

Edge support for the mattresses is also similar. Neither has anything in its construction to prevent sagging around the edges, like a high-density foam perimeter or pocketed coils. If you need to use the full surface area of the mattress, like if you’re sharing a Full size mattress with a partner, you may want a hybrid mattress with better edge support instead.

Pressure Relief

The soft side of the Layla is the clear winner when it comes to pressure point and pain relief. It’s a great mattress for side sleepers and people who want to sink in and feel cradled. You’ll get some of that sensation on the firm side of the Layla, but it’s definitely more dense and supportive.

The Tuft & Needle’s polyfoam comfort layer isn’t the most pressure-relieving foam in the world, but it has a light responsiveness that makes a good mattress for combination sleepers and should feel generally comfortable for all three sleeping positions.

Spine Alignment

Spinal alignment on any mattress depends on your sleeping position and body type. Both the Tuft & Needle Original and the Layla are best for lightweight and average-weight sleepers. In terms of sleeping positions, the soft side of the Layla really takes the cake. It has just the right amount of sinkage to create a cradling sensation around the hips and shoulders that will allow the spine to relax into a nice straight line.

The firm side of the Layla and the Tuft & Needle can work well for back and stomach sleepers. If we had to choose, we’d recommend the Tuft and Needle to strict stomach sleepers, as it’s overall “lifted” feel should do a better job of preventing the low back from bowing in this position.

Durability

Like most foam mattresses, the Tuft & Needle and the Layla have a lifespan of roughly seven years. That being said, the Layla’s dual-sided design may encourage you to rotate it and flip it more often, which could contribute to a slightly longer lifespan without indentations, damage, or sagging.

Temperature

Neither bed is especially cooling, but we’d say that both have just enough cooling materials to help them sleep temperature neutral. They don’t sleep nearly as warm as traditional memory foam mattresses, as the covers and top layers are breathable, but if you’re looking for a truly cooling bed with great airflow and breathability, we recommend a hybrid or innerspring mattress.

Layla Mattress Construction

layla memory foam mattress layers v1 e1600975105901
Cover Polyester-blend cover with handles
Comfort Layer  Copper-infused memory foam
Transitional Layer Convoluted polyfoam (soft side)
Support Layer High-density polyfoam
Mattress Thickness  10”

The Layla is 10” tall and features three foam layers. The gray cover has a hexagonal design that is infused with Thermogel to help with temperature neutrality. The firm and soft sides of the mattress share the same support layer: a slab of high-density polyfoam. This is a relatively standard base layer for a foam bed-in-a-box mattress.

There’s a memory foam comfort layer that’s infused with copper on the soft and the firm sides of the mattress. The soft side has a 3” layer of memory foam, and the firm side has a 1” layer of the material. The memory foam is infused with copper, which helps draw heat away from the body.

There is a transition layer, but it’s only on the soft side of the mattress. It’s made of convoluted polyfoam for added softness, and helps prevent sleepers from coming into contact with the bed’s firm core.

Tuft & Needle Mattress Construction

tuft and needle construction
Cover Polyester-blend cover
Comfort Layer  Gel- and graphite-infused Adaptive foam
Transitional Layer N/A
Support Layer High-density polyfoam
Mattress Thickness  10”

The Tuft & Needle has a simpler design than the Layla. It has a knit cover made from a blend of polyester and polyamide that has a breathable, soft feel. This is followed by 3” of polyfoam, which is low density. The density allows it to absorb less body heat than comparable foams. This layer is also infused with cooling gel and graphite to help hot sleepers, but we expect it to sleep temperature neutral rather than cool.

The support layer of the Tuft & Needle is 7” of high-density polyfoam. This dense layer stabilizes the mattress and contributes to the bed’s medium-firm feel. Altogether, the mattress measures 10” tall.

Sizing & Price Comparisons

Mattress Size  Layla Price Tuft & Needle Price
Twin $649 $450
Twin XL $749 $495
Full $949 $595
Queen $1,049 $695
King $1,149 $850
Cal King $1,149 $850

The Layla ships free to all 48 contiguous states. Customers in Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada must pay a shipping fee. Layla ships via FedEx Ground, and most mattress orders arrive within five business days.

On the date of purchase, a 120-night sleep trial begins for your Layla mattress. You’ll need to sleep on the bed for at least 14 nights after it arrives before initiating a return, but you can return it at any point after those two weeks during the trial period for a full refund. If you decide not to keep it, you’ll email Layla’s customer service department to start the return process. Layla will coordinate the pick up process, donate the bed to a charity, and refund you in full.

The Layla is backed by a limited Lifetime warranty that covers indentations deeper than 1”, loss of shape, loss of mattress height, splitting or cracking, and split seams. Layla will replace or repair the mattress at their sole discretion, and customers are subject to shipping fees up to $50.

Tuft & Needle Mattress

The Tuft & Needle ships free to the contiguous 48 states. Shipping fees may apply to customers in Alaska and Hawaii. Most mattresses ship within five business days. California residents may be eligible for free removal of an old mattress at checkout. The Tuft & Needle ships as a bed-in-a-box, so it will arrive compressed, vacuum-sealed, and packed in a box

You’ll have a 100-night sleep trial to test the mattress, and you can return it for a full refund at any point during the trial. Keep in mind that Tuft & Needle cannot refund shipping charges for customers in Alaska and Hawaii. Returned mattresses are typically donated to charity. Tuft & Needle is not clear on its website about whether it coordinates mattress pickup for customers.

The Tuft & Needle’s 10-year warranty covers defects resulting from defective materials or workmanship, including foam indentations greater than ¾” deep, physical flaws causing the product to measure more than 1” out of dimensional specifications, and physical flaws that cause the materials to split or crack. Tuft & Needle will repair or replace the defective product or components in the event of a defect.

Our Final Take

Still having trouble deciding between these foam beds? Here’s a simple way to think about the choice. If you prioritize having two options in one mattress or are a strict side sleeper, go with Layla. If you like a fluffy, memory foam feel that’s a little more responsive than traditional memory foam, go with Tuft & Needle.

The Tuft & Needle is a better pick for people who have a thin budget because it should save you $200 at a minimum. As a two-layer bed, it has less heft than the Layla, but its neutral foam feel makes it accommodating for all sleeper types, so it could be a good choice for a dorm room, guest bedroom, or someone who’s looking for a bed they can trust to be pretty comfortable in any sleeping position.
