Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Firmness & Feel
Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Firmness
The Tuft & Needle Mint is a medium-firm mattress. When measured on a 1–10 firmness scale, with 1 being cotton-soft and 10 floorboard-hard, the Mint falls at a 6/10—the preferred firmness level for most people. Medium-firm mattresses typically work best for back sleepers, lighter-weight stomach sleepers, and average-weight or heavyweight side sleepers.
What Does the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Feel Like?
The Mint is soft enough to contour to the curves on your side or back. When we tested the Mint mattress, our heavier testers (predictably) sank deeper into the bed than our lighter-weight testers; so, we think the Mint is supportive enough to keep the spine aligned in every sleeping position, so long as you weigh less than 230 lbs.
Heavier folks need more support than the Mint provides. For ideas on a more supportive bed, head over to our top picks for the best mattresses for heavy people.
What Sleeping Position Is the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Best For?
Body Type: | BACK SLEEPERS | STOMACH SLEEPERS | SIDE SLEEPERS |
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): | 5 | 4 | 4 |
Average-weight (130–230 lbs): | 4 | 3 | 4 |
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): | 3 | 2 | 2 |
1 = Very poor 2 = Not good 3 = Fair 4 = Good 5 = Excellent
Back Sleepers
The Tuft & Needle Mint delivers an ideal combination of support and softness for lightweight and average-weight back sleepers. Expect an initial cushioning that’s balanced by foam compression at heavier body parts, supporting the spine’s natural S-curve.
But heavyweight people are likely to find themselves sinking too far into the 5” comfort system. Excess sinkage along the hips and core means poor spinal alignment and potential lower back pain. We recommend considering one of the beds on our best mattresses for back sleepers compilation.
Side Sleepers
The Tuft & Needle Mint’s comfort foam layers are twice as thick as most foam beds, creating the pressure-relieving cradle that most side sleepers require. The Mint creates a comfortable surface for side sleeping by cushioning pressure points, especially for average-weight and lightweight folks. Heavyweight people may sink too far into these deep layers of foam and should consider a mattress designed for bigger bodies.
For more side sleeper mattresses, check out our list of the best mattresses for side sleepers.
Stomach Sleepers
The best mattresses for stomach sleepers have a thin layer of soft foam for comfort paired with durable midsection support. The T&N Mint’s surface is too soft for heavyweight stomach sleepers, but has the right balance of plushness and support for lightweight stomach sleepers. It’s suitable for average-weight stomach sleepers, but wouldn’t be our top pick if you spend all night on your front.
Combination Sleepers
The T&N Mint has everything we look for when shopping for a mattress for lightweight and average-weight combination sleepers. It offers good support for all sleeping positions, so no matter which positions you sleep in, the Mint has you covered. It also quickly responds to your changes in position, which we call responsiveness.
While the Mint is a top contender for combination sleepers weighing less than 230 lbs, we don’t recommend it for heavyweight combination sleepers. The Mint’s thick comfort layers make movement challenging for bigger bodies, and it doesn’t provide sufficient lumbar support in any position.

Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Performance
Is the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Cooling?
All-foam beds have a bad reputation for sleeping too hot, with body heat building up as the night goes on. The Mint sleeps quite cool, thanks to features like open-cell foams that are infused with cooling gel beads and graphite. Additionally, the Mint doesn’t have any memory foam layers—the type of foam that tends to hold onto the greatest amount of heat.
While the T&N Mint is an excellent fit for most people, extra-hot sleepers might be better off choosing an innerspring, hybrid, or latex mattress. Breathable coils and naturally cool latex are the coolest mattress materials, which is why most of the beds that made our best cooling mattresses list include one of these components.
Edge Support
The most supportive mattresses are made from durable materials and have reinforced edge support. The T&N Mint is supportive for an all-foam mattress, with a durable foam base and a high-density foam encasement that provides above-average edge support. We didn’t feel like we’d slide off the bed whether sitting or sleeping along the edges.
Responsiveness
The Mint mattress has better responsiveness than many all-foam beds. The T&N-exclusive foam that makes up the top two layers quickly responds to weight, so you can move around without feeling stuck.
Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?
If you sleep with a partner or pet, you don’t want to be disturbed by motion transferring from their side of the bed. Foam mattresses generally absorb most movement before it has a chance to travel, and that’s what we noticed when testing the T&N Mint mattress. During both our “water beaker test” (see our video review) and blindfold test, we didn’t notice much motion transfer.

Noise
We didn’t hear any squeaking coming from our Mint mattress, which makes sense since it’s made entirely of foam.
Pain Relief
The Mint is a good choice for people with joint pain. By evenly distributing body weight, it helps relieve pressure buildup near the joints. The top foam layer has a plush feel that gently cradles pressure points and is particularly good for people weighing less than 230 lbs.
If you experience back pain, the Mint is a good fit as long as you’re a back sleeper under 230 lbs or stomach sleeper under 130 lbs. Heavier folks probably won’t get the lower back support they need to keep their spine aligned and prevent back pain. For better options, see the best mattresses for back pain.
Sex
We consider the Mint to be a good mattress for sex. It’s quick to adapt to your changes in position, stays cool for a foam bed, and doesn’t make much noise.
Off-Gassing
Off-gassing is a technical term for that new mattress smell, and it comes from the foam layers airing out. It’s similar to the way a freshly painted room smells before the paint fully dries. Like the smell of drying paint, an odor coming from your mattress is temporary and should wear off after 24–48 hours with no sheets in a well-ventilated room.
Off-gassing is considered non-toxic when the mattress is made with CertiPUR-US certified foams. T&N uses foams with this certification, which means they pass tests for low emissions and no harmful chemicals.
Durability
We expect the Mint mattress to last around seven years; however, the top foam layer is relatively low density, so it may soften with time. Also, with thick comfort layers and a foam base layer, it isn’t durable enough for most people who weigh more than 230 lbs.

Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Construction: What’s It Made Of?
The Tuft & Needle Mint is a 12” all-foam mattress. By using proprietary polyfoam layers, T&N achieves above-average pressure relief while maintaining ease of movement. Below the conforming 3” comfort layer is a transitional layer with gel beads that compress and add extra firmness when sufficient weight is applied. The balance between firm support and cushion creates a medium-firm feel that suits lightweight and average-weight folks in every sleeping position.
Layer #1—Plush-Knit Cover: The mattress cover is made from a breathable, soft knit fabric.
Layer #2—T&N Adaptive Foam Comfort Layer (3”): This top layer of open-cell foam has a soft-to-medium density, and is both cushioning and responsive. It’s also infused with graphite pieces that help with temperature regulation.
Layer #3—T&N Adaptive Foam Transition Layer (2”): A second, firmer layer of T&N’s Adaptive Foam helps to keep your spine in a healthy, neutral alignment. It’s infused with ceramic gel beads that further minimize heat retention.
Layer #4—High-Density Foam Support Layer (7”): A base layer of durable, high-density polyfoam keeps the mattress stable and helps reduce motion transfer.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?
Shipping & Unboxing
The Tuft & Needle Mint mattresses ship free to all 48 continental states via FedEx Ground, and arrive within 3–10 business days. The bed comes compressed in a box, hence the term “bed-in-a-box mattress.” T&N can ship to Alaska or Hawaii for an additional fee.
Once the mattress arrives, place it on your foundation to unbox it. Next, grab the ends of the plastic wrap and pull on them to unroll the mattress. Once it’s flat, remove the plastic wrap. The bed should start to expand, which typically only takes a few minutes but can take up to a few days. There will be a temporary odor called off-gassing that should fade within a similar timeframe.
Warranty
Tuft & Needle mattresses come with a 10-year warranty. This limited warranty covers material defects from defective materials or workmanship. Examples include visible sags greater than .75” in the foam layer or a physical flaw in the foam that causes it to split or crack.
Your mattress must be in good condition to qualify for a warranty claim. To safeguard your purchase, we recommend using a waterproof mattress protector along with a sturdy base. The T&N Mint is compatible with box springs in good condition and most bed frames and adjustable bases. Just be sure that if you use a slatted base that the slats are no more than 5” apart.
Trial Period & Returns
When you buy a mattress online from Tuft & Needle, you get to test it out in the comfort of your bedroom during the 100-night sleep trial. Most companies require that you keep your new mattress for at least 30 nights, but T&N allows returns at any time during the trial period for a full refund. T&N works with you to find a local donation or recycling center for mattress pickup.
Addressing Common T&N Mint Mattress Complaints
- Not for plus-size people: We agree with reviewers who say that the Mint mattress isn’t supportive enough for people weighing more than 230 lbs. Unless you’re a back sleeper right around the 230 lb mark, you’ll probably want a firmer mattress.
- Overheats: In our experience, the Mint mattress doesn’t overheat, but some customers complained that their bed got too hot. The Mint is an all-foam mattress, so it’s not as breathable as a mattress with coils, but we think it should stay temperature neutral for the average sleeper. If you’re prone to overheating, instead consider a mattress with coils.

The Original Tuft & Needle mattress and Tuft & Needle Mint mattress are made with similar materials and designs, but the Mint is an upgraded version of the Original. Also, the Original is slightly firmer than the Mint and doesn’t have the same pressure-relieving cradle, which makes the Mint better for side sleepers and lightweight people.
The Original is less expensive and has a similar responsive feel that’s great for combination sleepers. Both beds do a good job isolating motion, helping couples sleep better.

The Tuft & Needle Hybrid has two layers of coils that create a much bouncier feel than the all-foam Mint mattress. While both beds sleep cool, the added breathability of the hybrid’s coils is better for hot sleepers.
These two mattresses have a similar firmness that works well for back, stomach, and side sleepers. The Mint delivers superior motion isolation and is, therefore, a good pick for couples.

Most adults are better suited by the Mint thanks to its greater support and pressure relief. But if you’re on a tight budget or shopping for a mattress for a guest room or teenager, the Nod is an excellent option.

The TEMPUR-Cloud is Tempur-Pedic’s most affordable mattress, and the only one available online as a bed in a box. The Cloud is a memory foam mattress with the doughy feel and slow-response that shoppers expect from memory foam mattresses.
The Cloud is firmer than the Mint, making it better for heavy people and firm mattress fans. The Mint sleeps cooler and is easier to move around on. It’s also better for most side sleepers and lightweight folks thanks to a much softer top layer.

The flagship Casper mattress is a mixed foam bed that pairs the responsive breathability of polyfoam with the contouring pressure relief of memory foam. Although it has the same medium-firm firmness as the T&N Mint, Casper’s Zoned Support foam better accommodates bigger bodies.
The Mint sleeps a touch cooler than the Casper mattress, while they are both top picks for couples thanks to sturdy edges and above-average motion isolation.

The Nectar is a memory foam mattress with the traditional “hugging” sensation of memory foam. While it and the Mint are both medium-firm mattresses, the Mint has a slightly softer surface and the Nectar’s takes more time to mold to the body.
If you love the contouring of memory foam, the Nectar might be a better fit, but it does sleep warmer, so hot sleepers should stick with the Mint.
