The Mattress Nerd’s Take: Tuft and Needle is one of the most popular bed-in-a-box brands in the mattress world. The Tuft & Needle Mint is an upgrade to the original Tuft & Needle mattress, with an extra foam layer added to the Original’s design and extra graphite in the construction for cooling. Upgraded cooling features, reinforced edge support, and elevated motion transfer technology make the Mint a step up from the original Tuft and Needle Mattress. This luxury option won’t break the bank and strikes the perfect balance between support and softness.
|Body Type:||BACK SLEEPERS||STOMACH SLEEPERS||SIDE SLEEPERS|
|Lightweight (< 130 lbs):||5||3||4|
|Average weight (130 – 230 lbs):||4||3||4|
|Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):||2||2||2|
1 = Very poor 2 = Not good 3 = Fair 4 = Good 5 = Excellent
Back Sleepers: The Tuft & Needle Mint does a phenomenal job of keeping your spine aligned throughout the night, which is a big plus for back sleepers. Heavier sleepers may feel the mattress sink more than they’d like, because it is an all-foam bed so it lacks some of the firmer support you may see in hybrid or innerspring models. But average-weight and lightweight back sleepers should find that the Tuft & Needle mint delivers an optimal combination of support and softness.
Stomach Sleepers: If you are a strict stomach sleeper, it is important to consider your weight. This is a medium-firm bed so it can adequately support average-weight sleepers. However, because this is an all-foam bed, you may require something firmer depending on your weight to maintain proper spine alignment and support. Without spine alignment, the hips can sink into the mattress for average-weight and heavyweight sleepers, causing the spine to curve.
Side Sleepers: The Tuft & Needle Mint was made for side sleepers. An all-foam blend provides excellent pressure relief and contouring for the hips and shoulders. Side sleepers need extra support for their pressure points and you’ll be sure to find that with the Tuft & Needle Mint’s soft adaptive foam. Still, heavier side sleepers might not find enough support in the Tuft & Needle Mint’s all-foam construction. Lightweight and average-weight side sleepers should find an adequate amount of plushness for their joints.
Combination Sleepers: If you frequently toss and turn throughout the night, the Tuft & Needle Mint’s responsiveness will suit you nicely. With an innovative transition layer of foam, this bed will isolate motion well and keep you supported no matter the position you land in. As long as you’re an average-weight or lightweight combination sleeper, the bed should suit you well. Plus-size sleepers might want to look for a hybrid or innerspring bed with the extra support of coils.
The Tuft & Needle Mint is a medium-firm mattress made with three foam layers of varying densities. Because of the Tuft & Needle adaptive transition layer of foam, you should get the feeling of responsive latex in the mattress. When a sleeper changes positions or gets in and out of bed, it shouldn’t feel like too much of a struggle or that the body is too bogged down in the mattress layers.
The Tuft & Needle Mint mattress is a medium-firm mattress – we’ve rated it at 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale – that is soft enough to contour to your curves on your side or back and keep your spine aligned throughout. It’s best for stomach sleepers and back sleepers who aren’t plus-sized, but it’s also good for some side sleepers.
Your weight determines how much pressure you will put on the mattress, especially along with the top layers. For the Tuft & Needle Mint, that means it will appeal to the average weight sleeper but will sleep slighter firmer for a lightweight person and with more contouring for a heavier sleeper.
Traditional foam mattresses had a bad reputation for sleeping too hot, meaning users would get too warm on top of the foam. Compared to the original Tuft & Needle mattress, the Tuft & Needle Mint added 30 percent more cooling graphite and more heat-absorbing ceramic gel to decrease the chance of overheating. It’s still an all-foam bed, but we’re impressed with the cooling capabilities of the mattress.
Whether you sleep with a partner, a child or a pet, keeping disturbances to a minimum is important to staying asleep and getting quality sleep. You can’t do that if you feel every shrug and shift from the other side of the bed during the night.
Foam mattresses normally do well isolating the movement of a partner getting up or out of bed near the source and keeping it from traveling to the other side. The Tuft & Needle Mint also manages this quite well and may work well for couples.
Edge support is important if you share a bed. You’ll need to use the entire mattress, not just the middle. Also, if you sit on the edge of your mattress, you’ll want it to hold you up without you sliding off onto the floor.
Foam mattresses don’t usually feature great edge support, but the Tuft & Needle Mint has good edge support. Tuft & Needle reinforced the edges on the bottom-most layer of the mattress to make you feel solidly supported from edge to edge and top to bottom.
The Tuft & Needle Mint mattress is two inches thicker than the original offering at 12 inches. It includes three distinct layers that accomplish three different functions. Overall, the three layers both relieve pressure and offer ample support, which will serve side sleepers and combination sleepers best.
Layer #1: Breathable Cover: The entire mattress is covered in a quilted poly blend material that feels substantial and soft to the touch.
Layer #2: Comfort Layer: The top layer of foam in The Tuft & Needle Mint mattress is two inches thicker than the original offering, coming in at 12 inches tall. It includes three distinct layers that accomplish three different functions. Overall, the three layers both relieve pressure and offer ample support, which will serve side sleepers and combination sleepers best.
The 3-inch layer of adaptive foam created by Tuft & Needle contours to every curve of your body (shoulders, hips, thighs). It’s plenty cushiony to relieve pressure on all your joints, but it doesn’t swallow you and make you feel like you can’t get up out of bed.
Layer #3: Transition Layer: The middle transition layer is made of polyfoam and keeps you from sinking too far down into the mattress. This 2-inch layer – a firmer version of the adaptive foam – is also enhanced in that it has been infused with cooling gel beads meant to keep the middle layer cool as well. The additional firmness acts as a buffer between the contouring of the top layer and the support of the bottom-most level. Because of this layer, you won’t just sink down into the hard foam at the bottom.
Layer #4: Base Foam: The final layer is a 7-inch base layer of higher density foam that holds the entire mattress up. Surrounding the main center slab is another outer rim of an even firmer foam that gives more support along the edges of the mattress.

It only contains 3 inches of the T&N adaptive foam versus the five-inch layer of adaptive foam in the T&N Mint. Whereas the Tuft & Needle Original has a white cover, the Tuft & Needle mint has a charcoal gray cover.

In this luxury model that builds upon the success of their flagship mattress, Tuft & Needle upgraded the cooling features, the edge support and added a transition layer so the support layer wasn’t undone by the cushioning layer. Now there is something sandwiched in between. The Tuft & Needle Mint is also one of our picks for the Best Mattress for the Money. It’s best for back and side sleepers who aren’t plus-size, but it could also work for some stomach sleepers.
Because foam mattresses naturally reduce motion transfer, this is a solid choice for couples who have different schedules or move a lot during the night. Because foam mattresses naturally do a good job curving to the body’s shoulders, hips, and thighs, your spine should stay aligned and reduce the chance of you waking up sore.
Tuft & Needle has added higher quality materials to the Mint without jacking up the price point significantly. If you’re an average-sized person in the market for a medium firm mattress that won’t break you financially, the Tuft & Needle Mint is a great choice.

Tuft & Needle suggests letting your new mattress air out by removing any sheets or mattress cover, but do not remove any fabric that comes with the mattress. Lucky for you, Tuft and Needle mattresses were designed to be compatible with most foundations as long as they provide even and balanced support. This includes platform frames, slatted frames, box springs, bunky boards, and adjustable bases. If you go with a slatted frame make sure the space between the slats is no more than 5″ apart.
The Tuft & Needle Mint can hold 500 lbs per sleeper and 1000 lbs for co-sleepers meaning this is a great mattress for sleepers of all body types and weights. You can sleep soundly knowing you’re well-supported by the Tuft & Needle Mint.
