The Mattress Nerd’s Take: The Tuft & Needle Mint is an all-foam mattress with a medium-firm feel that accommodates all sleeping positions. With extra-thick comfort layers, the Mint cushions pressure points and stops motion from traveling to the other side of the bed. It’s cooler and more responsive than your average foam bed.

How Does the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Feel?

Firmness

The Tuft & Needle Mint is a medium-firm mattress. When measured on a 1–10 firmness scale, with 1 being cotton-soft and 10 floorboard-hard, the Mint falls at a 6/10—the preferred firmness for most people. The Mint is soft enough to contour to your curves on your side or back and firm enough to keep the spine aligned in every sleeping position, so long as you weigh less than 230 pounds. Heavier folks need more support than the Mint provides.

For ideas on a more supportive bed, head over to our top picks for the best mattresses for heavy people.

Temperature

All-foam beds have a bad reputation for sleeping too hot, with body heat building up in the comfort layers over the night. Fortunately for hot sleepers, the Mint sleeps quite cool.

The Tuft & Needle Mint is one of the coolest all-foam mattresses thanks to cooling features like open-cell foams, graphite, and cooling gel beads. Additionally, the Mint doesn’t have any memory foam layers, the type of foam that tends to hold on to the greatest amount of heat.

While the T&N Mint is an excellent fit for most people, extra-hot sleepers might be better off choosing an innerspring, hybrid, or latex mattress. Breathable coils and naturally cool latex are the coolest mattress materials, which is why most of the beds that made our best cooling mattresses list include one of these components.

Support

The most supportive mattresses are made from durable materials and have reinforced edge support. The T&N Mint is supportive for an all-foam mattress, with a durable foam base and a high-density foam encasement creating an average lifespan and above-average edge support

We expect the Mint bed to last around seven years, and the edges are plenty sturdy enough for you to lie along them without worrying about falling off. However, the top foam layer is relatively low density, so it may soften with time. And with thick contouring comfort layers and a foam base layer, it isn’t supportive enough for most people who weigh more than 230 pounds.

Back Sleepers

The Tuft & Needle Mint delivers a brilliant combination of support and softness for lightweight and average-weight back sleepers. Expect an initial cushioning that’s balanced by foam compression at heavier body parts, supporting the spine’s natural S-curve.

But heavyweight people are likely to find themselves sinking too far into the 5” comfort system. Excess sinkage along the hips and core means poor spinal alignment and potential lower back pain. We recommend considering one of the beds on our best mattresses for back sleepers compilation.

Side Sleepers

The Tuft & Needle Mint’s comfort foam layers are twice as thick as most foam beds, creating the pressure-relieving cradle that most side sleepers require. The Mint creates a comfortable surface for side sleeping by cushioning pressure points, especially for average-weight and lightweight folks. Heavyweight people may sink too far into these deep layers of foam and should consider a mattress designed for bigger bodies.

For more side sleeper mattresses, check out our list of the best mattresses for side sleepers.

Stomach Sleepers

The best mattresses for stomach sleepers have a thin layer of soft foam for comfort paired with durable midsection support. The T&N Mint’s surface is too soft for heavyweight stomach sleepers, but has the right balance of plushness and support for lightweight stomach sleepers. It’s suitable for average-weight stomach sleepers, but wouldn’t be our top pick if you spend all night on your front.

Combination Sleepers

The T&N Mint has everything we look for when shopping for a mattress for lightweight and average-weight combination sleepers. To start, the Mint offers good support for all sleeping positions, so no matter which positions you sleep in, the Mint has you covered. But what sets it apart from its competition is its reliable responsiveness. The proprietary polyfoam along the T&N’s top two layers quickly responds to weight, so you can move around without feeling stuck.

While the Mint is a top contender for combination sleepers weighing less than 230 pounds, we don’t recommend it for heavyweight combination sleepers. The Mint’s luxuriantly thick comfort layers make movement challenging for bigger bodies, and it doesn’t provide sufficient lumbar support in any position.

Does It Fit Your Needs?

Budget

The Tuft & Needle Mint is one of the best foam mattresses at its price point. At $1,095 for a Queen-size bed, the Mint is exceptionally thick and pressure-relieving. What’s more, T&N usually runs promotions, so you probably won’t need to pay full price.

Joint Pain

The Mint is one of our top picks for people with joint pain. The Adaptive foam comfort layer has a plush feel that gently cradles pressure points and is particularly good for people weighing less than 230 pounds. By evenly distributing body weight, the Mint may help relieve joint aches and pains.

mintinside

Construction: What’s Under the Surface?

The Tuft & Needle Mint is a 12” all-foam mattress. By using proprietary polyfoam layers, T&N achieves exceptional pressure relief while maintaining ease of movement. Below the conforming 3” comfort layer is a transitional layer with gel beads that compress and add extra firmness when sufficient weight is applied. The balance between firm support and cushion creates a medium-firm feel that suits lightweight and average-weight folks in every sleeping position.

Layer #1: Plush-Knit Cover: A brilliantly white mattress cover made from a breathable yet cozy knit fabric.

Layer #2: T&N Adaptive Foam Comfort Layer (3”): A top layer of proprietary foam with a soft-to-medium density brings a generous cushion and a responsive feel. This layer is infused with cooling graphite with open-cell foams for airflow and cool sleep.

Layer #3: T&N Adaptive Foam Transition Layer (2”): A second layer of T&N’s Adaptive Foam that’s firmer than the layer above, helping support the spine for healthy alignment. With ceramic gel beads, this foam further minimizes heat retention.

Layer #4: High-Density Foam Support Layer (7”): Durable polyfoam brings longevity while limiting motion transfer.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

The Tuft & Needle Mint mattresses ship free to all 48 continental United States via FedEx Ground and arrive within three to ten business days. The bed comes compressed in a box, hence the term “bed-in-a-box mattress.” T&N can ship to Alaska or Hawaii for an additional fee.

Once the mattress arrives, place it on your foundation to unbox it. Next, grab the ends of the plastic wrap and pull on them to unroll the mattress. Once it’s flat, remove the plastic wrap. The bed should start to expand, which typically only takes a few hours but can take up to a few days. There will be a temporary odor called off-gassing that should fade within a similar timeframe.

Warranty

Tuft & Needle mattresses come with a 10-year warranty. This limited warranty covers material defects that come from defective materials or workmanship. Examples include visible sags greater than .75” in the foam layer or a physical flaw in the foam that causes it to split or crack.

Your mattress must be in good condition to qualify for a warranty claim. To safeguard your purchase, we recommend using a waterproof mattress protector along with a sturdy base. The T&N Mint is compatible with box springs in good condition and most bed frames and adjustable bases. Just be sure that if you use a slatted base that the slats are no more than 5” apart.

Trial Period & Returns

When you buy an online mattress from Tuft & Needle, you get to test it out in the comfort of your bedroom during the 100-night sleep trial. Most companies require that you keep your new mattress for at least 30 nights, but T&N allows returns at any time during the trial period for a full refund. T&N works with you to find a local donation or recycling center for mattress pickup.

FAQs

Is Tuft & Needle Mint worth it?

Tuft & Needle provides high-quality mattresses at affordable prices, and the Mint is T&N’s most luxurious all-foam mattress. With thicker-than-average comfort and transitional foam layers, the Mint offers exceptional pressure relief and opulent comfort for its price. Plus, T&N regularly runs promotions on its mattresses.

Is the Tuft & Needle Mint too soft?

The right firmness varies from one person to another and depends on how you sleep and your body type. The Mint is the correct firmness for most lightweight and average-weight sleepers, no matter their sleeping position. It is, however, too soft for most heavyweight people and firm mattress fans.

Does the Tuft & Needle Mint sleep cool?

The T&N Mint is one of the coolest all-foam mattresses. By utilizing open-cell polyfoams rather than heat-retaining memory foams, the Mint minimizes heat retention. Additionally, the incorporation of cooling graphite and gel beads further supports cool sleep. However, the Mint isn’t as cool as most hybrid and innerspring mattresses.

The Original Tuft & Needle and Mint mattress have similar materials, with the Mint a more luxurious version of the Original. The Original is slightly firmer than the Mint and doesn’t have the same pressure-relieving cradle, which makes the Mint better for side sleepers and lightweight people.

The Original is less expensive and has a similar responsive feel that’s great for combination sleepers. Both beds do a good job isolating motion, helping couples sleep better.

The Tuft & Needle hybrid has two layers of coils that create a much bouncier feel than the all-foam Mint mattress. While both beds sleep cool, the added breathability of the hybrid’s coils is better for hot sleepers

These two mattresses have a similar firmness that works well for back, stomach, and side sleepers. The Mint delivers superior motion isolation and is, therefore, a good pick for couples.

Both the Mint and Nod are all-foam beds, but the Mint is thicker and more resilient than the Nod. The Nod is softer than the Mint and is best for lightweight people.

Most adults are better suited by the Mint thanks to its greater support and pressure relief. But if you’re on a tight budget or shopping for a mattress for a guest room or teenager, the Nod is an excellent option.

The TEMPUR-Cloud is Tempur-Pedic’s most affordable mattress. The Cloud is a memory foam mattress with the slow-response, doughy feel that shoppers expect from Tempur-Pedic beds. The Cloud is firmer than the Mint, making it better than the Mint for heavy people and firm mattress fans.

The Mint sleeps cooler and is easier to move around on. It’s also better for most side sleepers and lightweight folks thanks to a much softer top layer.

The flagship Casper mattress is a mixed foam bed that pairs the responsive breathability of polyfoam with the contouring pressure relief of memory foam. Although it has the same medium-firm firmness as the T&N Mint, Casper’s zoned support foam better accommodates bigger bodies.

The Nectar is a memory foam mattress with a traditional hugging feel. While it and the Mint are both medium-firm mattresses, the Mint has a slightly softer surface and the Nectar’s takes more time to mold to the body.

The difference in feel leads us to recommend the Mint over the Nectar to most side sleepers and lightweight folks. But if you love the memory foam cradle, the Nectar might be a better fit.

See our full Nectar Mattress Review to learn more.

Pros/Cons

Pros

  • Good for sensitive sleepers: The Mint’s all-foam construction means that you can move around without a sleeping partner feeling your every move. This exceptional motion isolation means a good mattress for light sleepers who share their bed.
  • Sleeps cool: If you’re someone who loves all-foam beds but tends to sleep hot, the Mint can deliver the comforting feel and cool sleep that you’re looking for.
  • Impressive pressure relief: The Mint has ultra-thick comfort layers that melt pressure away from sensitive areas. The pressure-relieving foams suit side sleepers and people with joint pain.

Cons

  • Not for plus-size people: The Mint isn’t supportive enough for people weighing more than 230 pounds.
  • No memory foam: While the Mint offers the same pressure relief as memory foam mattresses, it only contains polyfoam. What this means is that it doesn’t have the same slow-response hug as memory foam mattresses
  • No coils: Do you enjoy a springy bed? Some people love the bouncy feel for adult activities or ease of movement. The Mint is an all-foam bed and therefore not the best option for innerspring mattress lovers.

What’s the Bottom Line?

The Tuft & Needle Mint provides luxury for all-foam mattress fans who sleep hot. T&N’s top two layers of Adaptive foam deliver softness and support without retaining as much heat as other leading foam beds. With a medium-firm feel and ultra-thick comfort layers, the Mint works well for every sleeping position, but we don’t recommend it to people who weigh more than 230 pounds.

Every T&N mattress comes backed by a risk-free 100-night sleep trial, so you don’t have to make your final decision until you’ve slept on it.
