How Does the WinkBeds EcoCloud Mattress Feel?

Firmness

The EcoCloud is a 6 on the 1–10 firmness scale, with 10 being the firmest. This means that it’s slightly firmer than average. Typically, this setting suits almost average-weight sleeper well. Given that it contains latex and coils, it has a bouncy feel that’s very responsive. The wool in the top layer of the bed offers some initial pressure relief, but the durable, lifted sensation from the pocketed coils accounts for the general bounce of the mattress.

Temperature

The EcoCloud sleeps noticeably cool thanks to a construction that works together to prevent body heat buildup. The cotton and wool in the cover help wick moisture away from the body. The Talalay latex, which is naturally very breathable, has an open-cell design and pincore holes to boost airflow. Lastly, the pocketed coils at the support core provide better airflow simply because of their spacious structure.

Support

The EcoCloud’s construction nails the ideal support level for lightweight and average-weight back and stomach sleepers, who generally desire a lifted yet comfortable feel for a good night’s sleep in these positions. The Talalay latex has some give but will push back where you need it, and the coils ensure the bed will maintain its bounce and support for years to come.

The edge of the bed is also reinforced with higher-gauge coils, which helps prevent sagging around the perimeter so that you can use the bed’s full surface area and sit on the edge of the mattress.

Back Sleepers

The EcoCloud is an excellent pick for lightweight and average-weight back sleepers, who should experience a mix of support and pressure relief on this mattress. Most heavyweight back sleepers should experience the same, but those who weigh over 300 lbs may need a firmer mattress.

The springs and latex in the EcoCloud work together to create a great mattress for back sleepers, while the cover and latex bring modest pressure relief to areas like the low back, shoulders, and feet.

Stomach Sleepers

Because the top layers of the EcoCloud do offer some sink, strict stomach sleepers who are heavyweight may experience sagging at the hips. This could throw the spine out of alignment and cause lower back pain. If you’re a lightweight or average-weight stomach sleeper, you should feel fine in this position.

For more options, see the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.

Side Sleepers

While the wool on top of the bed offers some pressure relief initially in this sleeping position, strict side sleepers may experience tension at the shoulder and hip joints as the night goes on. The latex doesn’t offer the same give or conformation as memory foam or soft polyfoam, and the best mattresses for side sleepers typically need a plush top layer to be comfortable.

If you only spend a small portion of the night in this position, you should feel okay regardless of whether you’re lightweight, average-weight, or heavyweight.

Combination Sleepers

The EcoCloud is very responsive and easy to move around upon, thanks to the springy cradle from the Talalay latex layer and the bounce from the coil system. These characteristics make it a nice choice for combination sleepers who frequently change positions at night.

While best for average-weight combination sleepers who switch primarily between their backs and stomachs, the mattress can also suit lightweight sleepers who change between these two positions and prefer a firm feel. Heavyweight combination sleepers who spend a lot of time on their back and side should also enjoy the feel of this bed.

Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  4 5 2
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): 5 4 3
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  3 2 4

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Does It Fit Your Lifestyle?

Eco-Conscious Shoppers

The term “organic mattress” gets thrown around often in the mattress industry, but the EcoCloud has materials and certifications that qualify it as a truly eco-friendly mattress. Its natural materials, like New Zealand wool, organic cotton, and non-toxic Talalay latex, may prove to be more durable than synthetic materials, so although the mattress is costly, it can be considered a worthwhile investment.

It boasts certificates from OEKO-TEX, the Global Organic Textile Standard, and the Rainforest Alliance, among others.

Allergy Sufferers

If you’re worried about allergies, mold, dust mites, or formaldehyde, the EcoCloud should be a safe pick. WinkBeds claims that it is safe for children, hypoallergenic, non-toxic, and not made with harmful chemicals.

The best mattress for allergies should reduce the presence of allergens in the bedroom, starting with its own construction, and the EcoCloud uses no synthetic foams. The eco-friendly materials it does include may help resist mildew, mold, and dust mites. Plus, the airflow and moisture wicking from the cover and coil layer will keep the mattress clean and dry.

Construction: What’s Under the Surface?

The WinkBeds EcoCloud is built with two layers and a cover. It measures 13” tall and has a simple design yet a responsive, durable structure. The latex layer at the top will provide some give for all sleeper types, and the firmer pocketed coils provide noticeable, immediate pushback to create a comfortable but lifted sensation.

Layer #1: Organic cotton cover: The cover is made with New Zealand wool and 100% organic cotton. It feels soft to the touch and helps wick moisture away from the body.

Layer #2: 4” Talalay latex: Beneath the cotton is 4” of Talalay latex that’s divided into two layers. Latex is known for excellent cooling, has a quick response to pressure, and offers pressure relief. While you don’t sink deeply into latex, you’ll feel a mix of comfort and lift at the hips and shoulders after a few minutes on the bed. The latex in the EcoCloud has pincore holes to further boost airflow.

Layer #3: 8” Zoned pocketed coils: The support core contains 15-gauge coils at the upper and lower third of the mattress and 14.5-gauge coils in the center third. This zoning provides a firmer feel under the low back and more pressure relief at the hips and shoulders. The base sits atop a 1” compressed cotton base and is reinforced with 16-gauge coils around the perimeter to prevent sagging at the edges.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

The EcoCloud ships free if you live in the contiguous U.S., and most customers receive their mattress within two weeks. Every EcoCloud is manufactured “fresh to order,” according to WinkBeds.com, and is then shipped via UPS Ground. The EcoCloud is a bed-in-a-box mattress, meaning that it ships compressed and rolled in a cardboard box.

Once it arrives on your doorstep, take it to the room where you plan to use it, unbox it, unroll it, and give it up to 72 hours to fully expand. White glove delivery, which typically includes in-home setup and old mattress removal, isn’t available through WinkBeds at this time.

Warranty

WinkBeds offers a limited Lifetime warranty for the EcoCloud, which is much longer than the industry standard coverage period of 10 years. The warranty is limited to one mattress replacement per purchase and applies only to the original owner. The warranty covers visible indentations 1.5” or deeper and physical flaws in the mattress that cause cracks or deterioration.

If you notice a defect, you’ll be responsible for communicating it to WinkBeds and either shipping the mattress back or providing photo evidence to the company of the issue. If WinkBeds confirms the defect, they will replace or repair your mattress at no cost to you, including shipping fees. The warranty doesn’t protect against shallow body impressions, sagging at the edges, physical damage from stains or burns, or comfort preferences.

Trial Period & Returns

You’ll have a 120-night sleep trial period to test out your EcoCloud mattress at home, which is longer than the industry standard 90-night trial period length. WinkBeds asks that you sleep on the mattress for at least 30 nights prior to making a decision to keep it or send it back; this month-long period allows time for your body to adjust to the mattress.

If you decide it isn’t right for you, the company will arrange free pickup and issue a full refund. You also have the option to exchange the EcoCloud during the sleep trial, but keep in mind that the second mattress comes with a shorter sleep trial (60 nights).

WinkBeds EcoCloud Mattress FAQs

How long has WinkBeds been in business?

WinkBeds was established in 2014 by Dan Adler, a NYC entrepreneur who developed an interest in physical and mental health. He sought to offer a product that hit the sweet spot for shoppers wanting more than an entry level foam bed and less than a luxury model.

Is the WinkBed EcoCloud a “good” mattress?

The WinkBed EcoCloud has a lot to offer, especially for the environmentally conscious consumer. It’s made with organic cotton and natural latex, offers generous airflow for a cool night’s sleep, and features zoned coils and reinforced edges that will provide excellent support for all sleeper types.

Is the WinkBed EcoCloud organic?

Organic mattresses are manufactured by combining natural and non-toxic materials like cotton, wool, and latex. The EcoCloud is made with environmentally conscious, all-natural, and organic materials and could be considered organic. Materials include OEKO-TEX 100 Certified Latex, organic cotton, New Zealand wool, and recycled steel.

Comparing the WinkBeds EcoCloud Mattress

WinkBeds EcoCloud vs. WinkBed

The WinkBed is WinkBeds’ flagship mattress, and it’s a hybrid bed that comes in three firmness options. You’ll like the WinkBed better than the EcoCloud if you prefer the feel of a traditional innerspring mattress. Both are great for hot sleepers, but the WinkBed is better for combination sleepers as it offers a little more conforming for side sleepers

The EcoCloud is the better pick for eco-conscious shoppers and those who like a firm mattress that conforms minimally to the body.

WinkBeds EcoCloud vs. WinkBed Plus

The WinkBed Plus is technically the firmest variation (8/10) of the original WinkBed. The Plus is designed specifically for heavyweight people. It has strong edge support and balances support and contouring for heavier body types nicely.

In general, we recommend the WinkBed Plus for people who are plus-size simply because the bed’s design caters specifically to them. However, if you’re a plus-size side sleeper, the EcoCloud, which is softer, may feel better to you; it has more give than the WinkBed Plus to prevent the shoulders and hips from feeling jammed.

WinkBeds Plus

The WinkBed Plus is a hybrid bed with pocketed coils designed specifically for plus-size sleepers or for couples who are looking for a little extra support. The bed balances a supportive feel with pressure relief that's great for back pain. WinkBed provides free shipping and a 120-day return policy.

WinkBeds EcoCloud vs. WinkBed GravityLux

The GravityLux is an all-foam bed available in three firmness options. It’s built for people who love conforming and pressure relief and normally sleep hot on foam beds. Shoppers who want a foam mattress with a few cooling features and want to choose their firmness level should go with the GravityLux. Those who sleep hot, are eco-conscious, and spend most of the night on their backs or stomachs should opt for the EcoCloud.

With quality motion isolation and pressure relief, it is a great option for couples. The gel-infused quilted foam also sleeps cooler than other foam mattresses.

WinkBeds EcoCloud vs. Avocado

Like the EcoCloud, the Avocado is a hybrid latex mattress, and it has a similar construction. The Avocado is slightly less expensive than the EcoCloud, making it a better pick for budget-conscious shoppers. The Avocado also has no zoning, while the EcoCloud has a zoned pocketed coil core to encourage spinal alignment. This makes the EcoCloud a better pick for people with back pain.

The Avocado Green mattress is made with all-natural and organic materials. The company viewed every construction process—from selecting the latex to making the mattress flame-retardant sans chemicals—through an eco-conscious lens.

WinkBeds EcoCloud vs. Saatva Latex Hybrid

The Saatva Latex Hybrid is a luxury hybrid mattress designed with organic materials, natural latex, and coils. It has a similar price point to the EcoCloud, but it’s firmer (7.5/10). The differences between the two beds lie mainly in their firmness levels and feels. If you’re heavyweight or enjoy a truly firm surface with minimal pressure relief, go with the Saatva Latex. If you’re average-weight and sleep in these positions but want some cushion, go with the EcoCloud.

Saatva Latex Hybrid

The Saatva Latex Hybrid is an all-natural mattress made with organic wool, organic cotton, a layer of Talalay latex and individually wrapped coils. This eco-conscious bed, made with breathable materials, is designed to sleep cool.

WinkBeds EcoCloud vs. Awara

The Awara is another latex hybrid model. The latex in the Awara is made with the Dunlop process, which creates noticeable differences between the Awara and the EcoCloud. Talalay latex (in the EcoCloud) is usually more breathable, but Dunlop latex is traditionally more durable than Talalay.

The Awara’s firmness level is 6/10, making it a touch softer than the EcoCloud, so lightweight sleepers and back sleepers may prefer it. The Awara also has a lower price point than the EcoCloud, so those with a tight budget will favor the Awara.

Awara

This is a high-quality, simply constructed mattress with a 4” top layer of Dunlop latex and a 9” support core of pocketed coils. The coils are zoned, meaning that they’re denser in areas where additional pressure from body weight typically occurs.

Pros/Cons

Pros

  • Eco-conscious materials: With Talalay latex, New Zealand wool, and organic cotton, the bed is hypoallergenic and has many “green” certifications that will appeal to shoppers who suffer from allergies or are environmentally conscious.
  • Bounce: The Talalay latex and coil core make the bed exceptionally easy to change positions on and to get in and out of.
  • Durability: The bed’s firmness level and inclusion of both latex and coils create the perfect recipe for a long-lasting mattress—it could last more than 10 years.
  • Cooling materials. If you normally sleep hot on hybrid beds, you shouldn’t have trouble on the EcoCloud. The cover, comfort layer, and base layer have cooling components, so airflow, moisture wicking, and breathability are strong throughout the night.

Cons

  • Motion Transfer: The combination of latex and springs in the EcoCloud make it easy to feel movement across the mattress’ surface, which could be an issue for couples.
  • Cost: The EcoCloud costs substantially more than other online mattresses, but this is to be expected for an eco-friendly, latex hybrid with quality materials.
  • Firm, supportive feel: The EcoCloud’s squarely medium-firm setting will alienate many sleeper types, namely those who like plush, memory foam mattresses and those who like very firm, flat beds.

What’s the Bottom Line?

All in all, the EcoCloud is a great investment mattress for eco-conscious shoppers who want a medium-firm mattress made with all-natural and organic materials. Its latex comfort layer and the airflow through the coil core make it very cooling, so it’s a good fit for hot sleepers. Its combination of bounce, lift, and firmness make it most appealing to back and stomach sleepers; side sleepers and lightweight sleepers are likely to find it too firm.
