WinkBeds EcoCloud Mattress Firmness and Feel

WinkBeds EcoCloud Mattress Firmness

Us Mattress Nerds like to classify firmness on a simple scale of 1–10. That means 10 is the firmest and 1 is like sleeping on cloud. And, this EcoCloud comes in at a pretty average 5.5 on our firmness scale. For your average sleeper, a 5.5 is solid (and soft) enough to get the job done—although some stomach sleepers and heavier sleepers might want something a little more firm.

What Does the WinkBeds EcoCloud Mattress Feel Like?

The WinkBeds EcoCloud mattress has responsive and soft Talalay latex and steel coils in its support layers, which give the bed a good bounce. For you, the sleeper, imagine sinking into a waterbed filled with jello. Despite this softness, the EcoCloud still has plenty of lift and durability for combination sleepers who want to change positions throughout the night.

What Sleeping Position Is WinkBeds EcoCloud Mattress Best For?

Body Type:Back SleepersStomach SleepersSide Sleepers
Lightweight< 130 lbs:543
Average-weight130–230 lbs:544
Heavyweight> 230 lbs:434

1 = Very poor     2 = Not good     3 = Fair     4 = Good     5 = Excellent

Back Sleepers

The best mattresses for back sleepers support the natural “S” curve of the sleeper’s spine. The EcoCloud’s spring and latex design is an excellent pick for lightweight and average-weight back sleepers who need a mix of support and pressure relief. Most heavyweight back sleepers should experience the same, but those who weigh over 300 lbs may need a firmer mattress.

Side Sleepers

Just like with back sleepers, the best mattresses for side sleepers keep your back aligned and also reduce pressure in key areas like the hips and shoulders. For heavyweight and average-weight side sleepers, the EcoCloud mattress does a good job of this, but some lightweight sleepers might not be able to sink down enough to cushion the spine.

Stomach Sleepers

For stomach sleepers, a good night’s sleep means a mattress that is firm and keeps the hips elevated. If you’re a lightweight or average-weight sleeper, the EcoCloud’s coil and latex support should be solid enough to stop your hips from sinking. However, some heavyweight stomach sleepers might need a firmer mattress to stay elevated.

Combination Sleepers

The EcoCloud is very responsive and easy to move around on, thanks to the springy coils and latex support. While best for average-weight combination sleepers who switch between their backs and stomachs, the mattress can also suit lightweight sleepers who change between these two positions and prefer a firm feel. Lastly, Heavyweight combination sleepers who spend a lot of time on their back and side should also enjoy the feel of this bed.

WinkBeds EcoCloud Mattress Performance

Is the WinkBeds EcoCloud Mattress Cooling?

If you’re a hot sleeper, the WinkBeds EcoCloud was made for you. With naturally cooling latex foam and a system of breathable steel coils, this mattress is as cool as a cloud and one of the best cooling mattresses too.

Edge Support

A mattress with good edge support is a mattress that holds your weight when you sleep on its edges—without dumping you on the floor. Having this extra mattress space can be especially important for couples and seniors. Since the EcoCloud has a support layer of steel coils, you should feel comfortable sitting or sleeping on the sides, although the head and foot of this bed are a little softer.

Responsiveness

If you’re a combination sleeper, we’ve got good news for you: Since the WinkBeds EcoCloud is made from coils and latex, this mattress is really as responsive as it gets. So, for sleepers who like to move around on their bed, this mattress is ideal.

Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?

Now, for the bad news: If you sleep with a partner who tosses, turns, and wakes you up, the EcoCloud probably isn’t for you. In other words, the EcoCloud’s motion isolation isn’t great.

The best mattresses for couples are those that minimize the effect of movement from one side of the bed to the other. This mattress is made with buoyant materials that are great for responsiveness, but not for motion isolation. As such, the EcoCloud isn’t ideal for those who share their bed and are easily disrupted by movement from sleeping partners.

Noise

Sometimes, mattresses with coils in their support layer can cause unwanted creaking during sex or even wake up light sleepers. If either (or both) of those is you, the EcoCloud mattress shouldn’t be an issue—it’s silent.

Pain Relief

For those with joint pain: the EcoCloud doesn’t provide the best pressure relief, so we don’t recommend it to those with pressure point pain. However, heavyweight side sleepers will likely press deep enough into the comfort layers to experience decent pressure relief. Lightweight sleepers, on the other hand, are likely to only get proper relief on their backs.

Sex

Cooling? Check. Responsive? Check. Quiet? Check. The EcoCloud mattress has what it takes to be one of the best mattresses for sex.

Off-Gassing

The WinkBeds EcoCloud doesn’t have much of any “new mattress smell” at all.

And, if you’re worried about allergies, mold, dust mites, or formaldehyde, the EcoCloud should be a safe pick. WinkBeds claims that it is safe for children, hypoallergenic, non-toxic, and not made with harmful chemicals.

The eco-friendly materials it does include may help resist mildew, mold, and dust mites. Plus, the airflow and moisture wicking from the cover and coil layer will keep the mattress clean and dry.

Durability

The bed’s firmness level, and inclusion of both latex and coils, create the perfect recipe for a long-lasting mattress. Like many of the best organic mattresses, it could last more than 10 years.

Its natural materials, like New Zealand wool, organic cotton, and non-toxic Talalay latex, may prove to be more durable than synthetic materials, so although the mattress is costly, it can be considered a worthwhile investment. It boasts certificates from OEKO-TEX, the Global Organic Textile Standard, and the Rainforest Alliance, among others.

WinkBeds EcoCloud Mattress Construction: What’s it Made of?

The WinkBeds EcoCloud is built with two layers and a cover. It measures 13 inches tall and has a simple design yet a responsive, durable structure. The latex layer at the top will provide some give for all sleeper types, and the firmer pocketed coils provide noticeable, immediate pushback to create a comfortable but lifted sensation.

Layer #1—Organic Cotton Cover: The cover is made with New Zealand wool and 100 percent organic cotton. It feels soft to the touch and helps wick moisture away from the body.

Layer #2—Talalay Latex: Beneath the cotton is four inches of Talalay latex that’s divided into two layers. Latex is known for excellent cooling, has a quick response to pressure, and offers pressure relief. While you don’t sink deeply into latex, you’ll feel a mix of comfort and lift at the hips and shoulders after a few minutes on the bed. The latex in the EcoCloud has pincore holes to further boost airflow.

Layer #3—Zoned Pocketed Coils: This eight-inch support core contains 15-gauge coils at the upper and lower third of the mattress and 14.5-gauge coils in the center third. This zoning provides a firmer feel under the low back and more pressure relief at the hips and shoulders. The base sits atop a one-inch, compressed cotton base and is reinforced with 16-gauge coils around the perimeter to prevent sagging at the edges.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

The EcoCloud ships free if you live in the contiguous U.S., and most customers receive their mattress within two weeks. Every EcoCloud is manufactured “fresh to order,” according to WinkBeds.com, and is then shipped via UPS Ground. The EcoCloud is a bed-in-a-box mattress, meaning that it ships compressed and rolled in a cardboard box.

Once it arrives on your doorstep, take it to the room where you plan to use it, unbox it, unroll it, and give it up to 72 hours to fully expand. White glove delivery, which typically includes in-home setup and old mattress removal, isn’t available through WinkBeds at this time.

WinkBeds EcoCloud Mattress Warranty

WinkBeds offers a limited Lifetime warranty for the EcoCloud, which is much longer than the industry standard coverage period of 10 years. The warranty is limited to one mattress replacement per purchase and applies only to the original owner. The warranty covers visible indentations 1.5” or deeper and physical flaws in the mattress that cause cracks or deterioration.

If you notice a defect, you’ll be responsible for communicating it to WinkBeds and either shipping the mattress back or providing photo evidence to the company of the issue. If WinkBeds confirms the defect, they will replace or repair your mattress at no cost to you, including shipping fees. The warranty doesn’t protect against shallow body impressions, sagging at the edges, physical damage from stains or burns, or comfort preferences.

Trial Period & Returns

You’ll have a 120-night sleep trial period to test out your EcoCloud mattress at home, which is longer than the industry standard 90-night trial period length. WinkBeds asks that you sleep on the mattress for at least 30 nights prior to making a decision to keep it or send it back; this month-long period allows time for your body to adjust to the mattress.

If you decide it isn’t right for you, the company will arrange free pickup and issue a full refund. You also have the option to exchange the EcoCloud during the sleep trial, but keep in mind that the second mattress comes with a shorter sleep trial (60 nights).

Addressing WinkBeds EcoCloud Mattress Complaints

  • Motion Transfer: The combination of latex and springs in the EcoCloud make it easy to feel movement across the mattress’ surface, which could be an issue for couples.
  • Cost: The EcoCloud costs substantially more than other online mattresses, but this is to be expected for an eco-friendly, latex hybrid with quality materials.
  • Firm, supportive feel: The EcoCloud’s squarely medium-firm setting will alienate many sleeper types, namely those who like plush, memory foam mattresses and those who like very firm, flat beds.

Hot SleepersSide Sleepers

The WinkBed is WinkBeds’ flagship mattress, and it’s a hybrid bed that comes in three firmness options. You’ll like the WinkBed better than the EcoCloud if you prefer the feel of a traditional innerspring mattress. Both are great for hot sleepers, but the WinkBed is better for combination sleepers as it offers a little more conforming for side sleepersThe EcoCloud is the better pick for eco-conscious shoppers and those who like a firm mattress that conforms minimally to the body.

WinkBeds EcoCloud vs. WinkBed Plus

WinkBeds EcoCloud is Best For:WinkBed Plus is Best For:
Eco-Conscious ShoppersShoppers looking for the firmest WinkBed Mattress
Heavyweight sleepers looking for a softer mattressHeavyweight Sleepers
Sleepers looking for support specifically in the hip and shouldersShoppers looking for good edge support

The WinkBed Plus is technically the firmest variation (8/10) of the original WinkBed. The Plus is designed specifically for heavyweight people. It has strong edge support and balances support and contouring for heavier body types nicely.

In general, we recommend the WinkBed Plus for people who are plus-size simply because the bed’s design caters specifically to them. However, if you’re a plus-size side sleeper, the EcoCloud, which is softer, may feel better to you; it has more give than the WinkBed Plus to prevent the shoulders and hips from feeling jammed.

The GravityLux is an all-foam bed available in three firmness options. It’s built for people who love conforming and pressure relief and normally sleep hot on foam beds. Shoppers who want a foam mattress with a few cooling features and want to choose their firmness level should go with the GravityLux. Those who sleep hot, are eco-conscious, and spend most of the night on their backs or stomachs should opt for the EcoCloud.

Comparing WinkBeds to the Competition

WinkBeds EcoCloud vs. Avocado Mattress

Shoppers looking for a mattress that provides spinal alignmentBudget Conscious Shoppers
Shoppers who experience back painHeavyweight sleepers
Sleepers who spend most of the night on their back and stomachShoppers who like a firm feeling mattress

Like the EcoCloud, the Avocado is a hybrid latex mattress, and it has a similar construction. The Avocado is slightly less expensive than the EcoCloud, making it a better pick for budget-conscious shoppers. The Avocado also has no zoning, while the EcoCloud has a zoned pocketed coil core to encourage spinal alignment. This makes the EcoCloud a better pick for people with back pain.

WinkBeds EcoCloud vs. Saatva Latex Hybrid

WinkBeds EcoCloud is Best For:Saatva Latex Hybrid is Best For:
Eco-friendly shoppersPeople who toss and turn at night
Back sleepers who experience back painPeople who have allergies
Combination sleepersThose who are looking for a firmer mattress than the WinkBeds EcoCloud

The Saatva Latex Hybrid is a luxury hybrid mattress designed with organic materials, natural latex, and coils. It has a similar price point to the EcoCloud, but it’s firmer (7.5/10).

The differences between the two beds lie mainly in their firmness levels and feels. If you’re heavyweight or enjoy a truly firm surface with minimal pressure relief, go with the Saatva Latex. If you’re average-weight and sleep in these positions but want some cushion, go with the EcoCloud.

WinkBeds EcoCloud vs. Awara

WinkBeds EcoCloud is Best For:Awara Mattress is Best For:
Shoppers who are looking for superior spinal supportShoppers looking for a mattress that is a tad softer than the EcoCloud
Back sleepers who experience back painShoppers looking for a more durable mattress
Combination sleepersLightweight Sleepers

The Awara is another latex hybrid model. The latex in the Awara is made with the Dunlop process, which creates noticeable differences between the Awara and the EcoCloud. Talalay latex (in the EcoCloud) is usually more breathable, but Dunlop latex is traditionally more durable than Talalay.

The Awara’s firmness level is 6/10, making it a touch softer than the EcoCloud, so lightweight sleepers and back sleepers may prefer it. The Awara also has a lower price point than the EcoCloud, so those with a tight budget will favor the Awara.

WinkBeds EcoCloud Mattress FAQs

How Long Has WinkBeds Been Around?

WinkBeds was established in 2014 by Dan Adler, a NYC entrepreneur who developed an interest in physical and mental health. He sought to offer a product that hit the sweet spot for shoppers wanting more than an entry level foam bed and less than a luxury model.

Is the WinkBeds EcoCloud a Good Mattress?

The WinkBed EcoCloud has a lot to offer, especially for the environmentally conscious consumer. It’s made with organic cotton and natural latex, offers generous airflow for a cool night’s sleep, and features zoned coils and reinforced edges that will provide excellent support for all sleeper types.

Is the WinkBeds EcoCloud Organic?

Organic mattresses are manufactured by combining natural and non-toxic materials like cotton, wool, and latex. The EcoCloud is made with environmentally conscious, all-natural, and organic materials and could be considered organic. Materials include OEKO-TEX 100 Certified Latex, organic cotton, New Zealand wool, and recycled steel.

The Nerd’s Take: What’s the Bottom Line?

The EcoCloud is for eco-conscious shoppers wanting a medium-firm organic mattress. Its latex layers and coil core make it extra cooling too. Next, the EcoCloud is ideal for back sleepers. Some side sleepers and lightweight sleepers may find it too firm, while some heavyweight stomach sleepers may need more firmness.
