Who Should Steer Clear of the Saatva Solaire Mattress

  • Ultra-soft mattress lovers—instead, Sleep Number mattresses are offered with varying top layers, some of which are softer than those atop the Saatva Solaire.
  • People sensitive to noise—instead, consider a luxury mattress with the same strengths as the Solaire that can also accommodate most sleeping positions and body types. We recommend the GhostBed 3D Matrix mattress.
  • Shoppers on a budget—there really aren’t any budget adjustable airbeds. Instead, consider a mattress with responsive materials and a medium-firmness. The Helix Midnight mattress is a good alternative.

Saatva Solaire Mattress Firmness and Feel

Saatva Solaire Mattress Firmness

The Saatva Solaire mattress allows users to select from 50 firmness options using a remote control, with one being the softest and 50 the firmest. On the standard 1–10 mattress firmness scale, the Saatva Solaire mattress can fall between 4/10 and 8/10, with 10 nearly as firm as the floor. This customizable quality makes this one of the best firm mattresses, if you want it to be.

This wide range of firmnesses means the Solaire is suitable for every sleeping position. However, some lightweight side sleepers may prefer an even softer mattress for sufficient cushion at the hips and shoulders.

What Does the Saatva Solaire Feel Like?

Fifty firmness settings that range from medium-soft to firm allow you to find your preferred feel—even if it changes from one day to the next. On top of the air chambers, there are 6″ of comfort materials with a medium-firmness. You’ll notice the difference in firmness by how deeply your curves sink into these comfort materials.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers of every body size are a good fit for the Saatva Solaire. The five-zoned latex layer facilitates spinal alignment and offers proper support for the shoulders, hips, legs, and feet. Because the memory foam layer helps cradle the back, you can find pressure relief with every firmness setting.

The best mattresses for back sleepers tend to have a medium, medium-firm, or firm feel—dependent upon your body weight and firmness preference. Because the Solaire offers customizable firmness settings that encompass all of these firmnesses, most back sleepers can find a feel that suits them.

Side Sleepers

The best mattresses for side sleepers offer contouring comfort for the hips and shoulders and promote spinal alignment, with softer mattresses generally the best fit. The Saatva Solaire mattress, with its remote control firmness customization options, ensures enough flexibility for side sleepers to rest comfortably without worrying about stress on their pressure points.

Lightweight side sleepers should enjoy the softest settings, average-weight side sleepers should enjoy the medium-soft settings, and heavyweight side sleepers will enjoy the medium settings.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers have similar mattress requirements as back sleepers—they need reliable support to keep their spines aligned, but a bit of cushion for comfort. The Saatva Solaire’s higher firmness levels combined with the memory foam layer offer exceptional support for your spine and reduce pressure on sensitive areas for stomach sleepers of all body types

The zoned latex layer also minimizes sinkage at the hips, a common problem for heavyweight stomach sleepers. Check out the best mattresses for stomach sleepers for other options that protect the hips and spine.

Combination Sleepers

Combination sleepers require a bed that can handle all of the aforementioned sleeping positions. The Saatva Solaire mattress’s varying firmness options means that you can make the bed the firmness that you prefer based on which positions you spend the most time in.

The layer of latex in the Saatva Solaire helps facilitate the bed’s responsiveness, making it easier to move around than, for instance, a traditional memory foam mattress. This ease of movement should help combination sleepers of all body types change positions throughout the night. If you’re looking for a bed that makes movement easy, see the best mattresses for combination sleepers.

Saatva Solaire Mattress Performance

Is the Saatva Solaire Mattress Cooling?

The Saatva Solaire is much cooler than your average mattress. This is because airbeds don’t store heat the same way that mattresses with only thick foam layers do—anyone who’s slept on an air mattress in cold weather can attest to that.

Layers of naturally cool latex, breathable organic cotton, and cooling gel memory foam reduce excess heat buildup, but also retain enough warmth to keep the mattress temperature neutral. This incredible cooling potential makes the Solaire one of the best cooling mattresses for hot sleepers.

Edge Support

Edge support refers to how well the perimeter of the mattress can bear weight. While it may not sound like the most important factor in the world for some shoppers, it’s important for couples who need space from one another, people with mobility issues who rely on the edge to get in and out of bed, and edge-of-the-bed sleepers.

Even the Solaire’s edge support is better than most luxury airbeds. The edges are comfortable and sturdy thanks to durable latex and a reinforced edge enclosure.

Responsiveness

Responsiveness refers to how well a bed responds to your movements: essentially, is it easy to move around on and change sleep positions? The Saatva Solaire uses latex foam, which should help with the responsiveness of this mattress.

Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?

The Solaire adjustable airbed is an exceptional mattress for couples. With a Queen size or larger, you can have different firmness levels on each side of the mattress. What this means is that you and your partner can sleep together comfortably, even when you have different body types, firmness preferences, or sleeping positions.

Another benefit of the Solaire is that its generous comfort layers and lack of innerspring coils create impressive motion isolation. For extra-light sleepers, consider the Split King or Split California King sizes for zero motion transfer.

Noise

There is a bit of noise associated with the Saatva Solaire, but it’s not from moving around. There is a slight mechanical sound as you change firmness settings, but this shouldn’t disrupt your sleep.

Pain Relief

The Saatva Solaire is one of few beds that may ease back pain for a variety of sleepers. With 50 firmness levels, zoned support, and ample cushioning for joints, the Solaire supports proper spinal alignment. Healthy alignment at night can make a huge difference to how your back feels during the day. To ease lower back pain, see the best mattress for back pain.

Sex

The temperature neutrality and responsiveness of the Solaire should make it a great mattress for sex. It only lacks the bounce of innerspring coils.

Off-Gassing

This mattress gets delivered to your bedroom via white glove delivery: it won’t even be in a box! This means you don’t have to worry about the off-gassing smell that typically comes with unboxing mattresses that use foam.

Durability

The Saatva Solaire is one of the most durable and supportive air mattresses. Rather than use low-quality, soft polyfoams along the mattress surface, Saatva instead incorporates Talalay latex, a material well-known for its resilience.

Its high-quality materials are why the Solaire is one of the best airbeds for heavier folks. For more supportive options, see the best mattresses for heavy people.

Saatva Solaire Construction: What’s It Made Of?

The Saatva Solaire consists of six different layers that work together to deliver maximum comfort for side, back, stomach, and combination sleepers. You can change the firmness level to find your preferred comfort level using the included remote. The air chambers in the Queen-size mattress or larger can be split to accommodate different firmness levels on each side of the bed.

Saatva Solaire Layers
Saatva Solaire Layers

Layer #1—Organic Cotton Cover & Pillow Top: The top layer of the mattress is an organic cotton cover with a soft polyfoam pillow top that brings cushioning for pressure points. Cotton’s natural breathability supports airflow and a cool night’s sleep.

Layer #2—Talalay Latex: This eco-friendly latex layer is split into five zones for targeted back support and pressure point relief. More firmness at the hips keeps you from sinking too far into the mattress at the heavier lumbar region.

Layer #3—Gel-Infused Memory Foam: Gel infused memory foam is a component of some of the best memory foam mattresses. This memory foam layer contours to your body and keeps your spine aligned while simultaneously keeping you cool. The memory foam is CertiPUR-US certified, meaning it’s free from harmful chemicals like heavy metals and ozone depleters.

Layer #4—Moisture Barrier: The moisture barrier creates a healthier mattress by preventing bacteria growth. The barrier protects the mechanical parts of the bed and stops bacteria from growing on internal components.

Layer #5—Vulcanized Air Chambers: It’s the air chambers that facilitate the Solaire‘s adjustable firmness settings. These chambers are part of a “multi-directional box baffle design” that delivers consistent support along the mattress surface. These chambers do not store excess body heat and are the main reason why the Solaire is one of the best mattresses for hot sleepers.

Layer #6—Power Edge Enclosure: The base layer of the Saatva Solaire mattress has a power edge enclosure that reinforces edge support around the perimeter of your mattress. Its in-rail air inflator, responsible for controlling the mattress firmness levels, is quiet, though we could hear it working when adjusting the firmness level.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

Unlike most other online mattresses companies, the Saatva Solaire doesn’t come vacuum-packed as a bed-in-a-box. When you order the Saatva Solaire mattress, you qualify for free white glove delivery and setup if you live within the contiguous 48 states.

The premium white glove delivery means the delivery drivers will hand-deliver your new mattress to your room of choice, set it up, and remove and dispose of your old mattress for no cost. After placing your order, you’ll schedule a delivery date and time.

Because the Solaire isn’t compressed into a box, it doesn’t have a lingering off-gassing odor. Instead, you can sleep on your new bed the very night that it arrives.

Warranty

The Saatva Solaire comes with a generous Lifetime warranty, compared to the more common 10-year warranty offered by most mattress companies.

For the first five years of ownership, parts are fully covered, while labor is covered for the first 15 years. Between years six and 10, you will be responsible for 50 percent of the cost of parts and associated shipping, and between years 11 and 15, you must cover 75 percent of the costs for parts and shipping.

From years 16 to 20, you are responsible for paying labor, transportation and installation costs, as well as 80 percent of parts cost. From then on, you must pay for labor, transportation, and installation costs, and 90 percent of parts cost.

In addition to the Lifetime warranty, Saatva also offers a Fairness Replacement Plan. With this option, between years six and 10 of your mattress ownership, you can replace your mattress for 50 percent of the original price you paid. From years 11 to 25, Saatva will replace your mattress for 75 percent of its original price.

Trial Period & Returns

It takes time to know if a mattress is truly right for you. When you order a Saatva mattress, you have a 365-night sleep trial to get a true feel for the product. If at any time during that 365-night period you are not satisfied with your mattress, Saatva will accept a full return, no questions asked. All you need to do is pay a $99 labor and gas fee.

Returned mattresses are never resold and are instead donated to veterans’ shelters or offered to employees and associates within the Saatva network.

Addressing Saatva Solaire Mattress Complaints

  • Price Point: The Solaire is a luxury mattress with a fitting price tag. Airbeds are often considered a luxury item, so we recommend waiting for seasonal or holiday discounts. You can also finance your mattress purchase.
  • Noise: The mattress makes a small amount of noise when adjusting the firmness. For deep sleepers, this shouldn’t be an issue. If you wake up easily, consider using a fan or white noise machine.
  • No Soft or Extra-Firm Settings: Customizable firmness doesn’t mean that the Solaire covers every mattress firmness. The settings don’t get as soft as the softest beds nor as firm as the firmest ones. If you want a softer or firmer feel, you can add a topper.

Comparing Different Saatva Mattresses

Saatva Solaire vs. Saatva Classic

Saatva Solaire Mattress is Best For:Saatva Classic Mattress is Best For:
Every Sleeping PositionBack and Stomach Sleepers
Combination SleepersPeople with Back Pain
CouplesHot Sleepers

The Saatva Classic differs from the Solaire in its materials, firmness, and feel. The Classic is an innerspring mattress with two layers of coils, reinforced lumbar support, and a Euro pillow top. When compared to the Solaire’s adjustable airbed build, the Classic is bouncier and easier to move around on—great for combination sleepers.

The Classic comes in three firmnesses compared with Solaire’s customizable firmness. The firmest Classic mattress is a touch firmer than the Solaire, which is good news for people who prefer a firm feel. The Solaire’s variable firmness works well for people who don’t know their preferred firmness, and the dual-sided air chambers are wonderful for couples who typically prefer different mattresses. Budget shoppers should stick with the Saatva Classic.

Saatva Solaire vs. Saatva Latex Hybrid

Saatva Solaire Mattress is Best For:Saatva Latex Hybrid Mattress is Best For:
Every Sleeping PositionBack and Stomach Sleepers
Combination SleepersEco-Conscious Consumers
CouplesHot Sleepers

The Saatva Latex Hybrid’s design is more eco-friendly than the Solaire’s. Organic cotton, organic wool, all-natural latex, and recycled steel make the Latex Hybrid an excellent bed for eco-conscious consumers.

When it comes to feel, both mattresses sleep cool and have a durable construction that supports bigger bodies. The Latex Hybrid only comes in one firmness that falls at the firmer end of the Solaire’s adjustable firmness settings. The Solaire’s softer customization levels are better for side sleepers and lightweight sleepers, unless they love a firm mattress.

Saatva Solaire vs. Saatva HD

Saatva Solaire Mattress is Best For:Saatva HD Mattress is Best For:
Every Sleeping PositionPlus-Size Sleepers
Combination SleepersPeople with Back Pain
CouplesHot Sleepers

Unlike the Saatva Solaire, which is designed to accommodate a wide range of people, the Saatva HD is built specifically for heavy people. With a universal medium-firm feel, the HD fits the needs of plus-size people no matter their sleeping position. Lighter people, particularly side sleepers, are better suited to the Solaire thanks to the softer firmness settings

While both mattresses are built to support bigger bodies, the HD may outlast the Solaire thanks to extra-durable steel coils. The HD is a bit springier and easier to move around on, while the Solaire’s dual-sided firmness makes it better for most couples.

Comparing Saatva to the Competition

Saatva Solaire vs. Tempur-Pedic

Saatva Solaire Mattress is Best For:Tempur-Pedic Mattress is Best For:
Every Sleeping PositionEvery Sleeping Position
Combination SleepersLight to Average-Weight Sleepers
CouplesMemory Foam Lovers

Tempur-Pedic is known for their high-end memory foam mattresses. Made with slow-response memory foam that deeply hugs the body, the feel of Tempur-Pedic mattresses is vastly different from the Saatva Solaire. Tempur-Pedic mattresses respond more slowly to movements but provide better pressure relief than the Solaire—particularly the soft Tempur-Pedic mattress models.

Tempur-Pedic mattresses sleep hotter than the adjustable Solaire air mattress. You can choose between soft, medium, or firm Tempur-Pedic beds, and they also come in hybrid models. The Solaire allows people who aren’t sure what firmness they prefer to find their fit. Price-wise, Tempur-Pedic is typically more expensive, but that depends on which model you choose.

Check out our Tempur-Pedic Mattress Reviews to learn more.

Saatva Solaire vs. Sleep Number

Saatva Solaire Mattress is Best For:Sleep Number Mattress is Best For:
Every Sleeping Position & Body TypeBack Sleepers
Combination SleepersStomach Sleepers
CouplesLightweight to Average-Weight Sleepers

Sleep Number created the first luxury airbeds. Today, they carry a wide variety of adjustable mattress models that range in price, comfort layer materials, and firmness ranges. One thing that may make you choose Sleep Number over the Solaire is that some models are far less expensive than the Solaire. Additionally, Sleep Number mattresses boast their sleep tracking technology, a fun tool that can help you improve your sleep.

While there’s a lot to love about Sleep Number, there are a few reasons why you may choose the Solaire. No Sleep Number mattress has zoned latex support, which makes us recommend the Solaire for heavier people and people with back pain. Additionally, the cost-to-quality ratio favors the Solaire, and it’s design is more eco-friendly. Finally, Saatva’s shipping policy, sleep trial, and warranty are more generous than Sleep Number’s.

Are Saatva mattresses any good?

The Nerd’s take? Yes. Saatva uses high-quality, eco-friendly materials and top-of-the-line comfort technologies in their line of mattresses. Their beds are priced to compete with other online mattress brands. Plus, they offer luxury services like free white glove delivery and old mattress removal and longer-than-average at-home trial periods and warranties.

Where can I try out a Saatva mattress?

Saatva is a direct-to-consumer mattress company, meaning their mattresses aren’t sold in brick-and-mortar stores around the country. They do have showrooms in Manhattan, New York; Washington, D.C; Boston, Massachusetts; San Francisco, California; and Los Angeles, California. Also remember that you get a 365-night trial period with your mattress purchase.

What foundation do I need for the Saatva Solaire?

Any sturdy foundation should do the trick. You can place the Saatva Solaire on an adjustable bed frame, platform base, metal bed frame and foundation, or slatted base with slats no more than 3” apart. Saatva sells bed frames and foundations, but you can use any quality, reliable brand.

What’s the Bottom Line?

The Saatva Solaire is a precision adjustable airbed mattress with 50 firmness options. Dual-firmness and excellent motion isolation make the Solaire a superb mattress for couples. With pressure-relieving foam and zoned support latex, the Solaire may ease body aches and pains for people of every sleeping position and body size.

The Solaire isn’t a budget item, so you may need to save a little extra or finance your purchase. Ultimately, the Solaire is worth the cost, and it’s priced to compete with other airbeds like the Sleep Number. Remember also that it’s protected by a Lifetime warranty.
