The Saatva Youth might be the best children’s mattress out there for a few key reasons. Practically everything about this bed is engineered just for kids. It’ll adapt as they grow, thanks to the dual-sided design that can be easily flipped once your child reaches 8 years of age.
The mattress is built with safety in mind; it has an organic, hypoallergenic cotton cover and foams that are free from harmful chemicals. It’s also accident proof, so whether your child has trouble wetting the bed or tends to have spills often, you won’t need to worry.
The Saatva Youth comes in three sizes that are best suited to children’s bodies. For most kids, a Twin size will provide enough room for them to sleep comfortably. If your child is taller or you anticipate they will use the bed until they’re a pre-teen, a Twin XL or Full size might be a better option.
Most kids will find the Saatva Youth comfortable regardless of their age, how much they weigh or how they like to sleep. Most Saatva beds come in a few firmness levels, but this one is about a medium firm mattress on both sides.
Medium firm is a nearly ideal setting because it’s versatile, meaning that it’s soft enough to feel comfortable and firm enough to provide support for every sleeping position. The five-zone support layer underneath the cover also makes sure your child’s spine will be adequately supported as they grow, which could even reduce growing pains.
Most children love the feel of a memory foam mattress, even if they don’t know it. Foam beds are easy to snuggle up in, but they are not as breathable as hybrid mattresses, so they can sleep hot. Children are usually less able to regulate their body temperature than adults, so fluctuating temperatures caused by a heat-retaining mattress can lead to health issues. A heat-retaining mattress could cause sleep loss or even exacerbate fevers if the child is sick.
As an innerspring mattress, the Saatva Youth sleeps cool thanks to the air that flows freely through the coil support core. If you’re looking specifically for a cooling mattress, you may want to check out our article on the best cooling mattresses.
|✅ Dual-sided coil unit provides support for the hips and shoulders
❌ Especially heavyweight children may experience sinking at the hips or shoulders
|✅ Five-zone support layer is firmer in the center for torso support||✅ Organic cotton cover and zoned support layer allow contouring at the hips and shoulders
❌ Not as much contouring and plushness as other children’s beds; medium firmness level
|✅ Changing positions will be easier on the bouncy innerspring core|
Back Sleepers: Kids who sleep on their back are in luck with this mattress. Its coil core and zoned support layer provide support for the spine to prevent sinking where they need it the most: the hips and shoulders. If you’re looking for more options for a back sleeper, see our article on the best mattresses for back sleepers.
Stomach Sleepers: Similar to back sleepers, kids who like to sleep on their stomachs will be adequately supported on both sides of this mattress. The coil unit can support any body type in this position, and the firmer center third of the comfort layer will keep the torso from sinking where the most pressure is applied, preventing low back pain.
Side Sleepers: The organic cotton cover and zoned support layer provide some contouring for side sleepers, but it won’t feel like a really deep, plush memory foam bed. If that’s what your child enjoys, you might want to consider another option: our best mattresses for side sleepers article might help you narrow it down. However, keep in mind that the Saatva Youth focuses on spinal health and support for all ages and body types, so even if it feels a little firm to your child at first, they’ll probably adjust over time.
Combination Sleepers: Most kids are combination sleepers, meaning they tend to change sleeping positions throughout the night. Tossing and turning will be easy on this mattress, thanks to the bouncy feel of the coil core. This mattress is so accommodating that, no matter your kid’s favorite sleeping position (or two), they’ll probably feel comfortable. It’s just as accommodating on the side that’s made for 3 to 8 year olds as it is on the 8+ side.
The Saatva Youth is a simple, three-layer mattress that’s designed specifically for kids. It has an innerspring design with a coil core and foam comfort layers.
Cover: The cover is made from organic cotton, which feels soft to the touch and helps keep the bed cool. It’s also hypoallergenic to help keep your child safe. Finally, the cover has a water-resistant finish and an internal waterproof barrier to protect against spills and accidents. To consider if you might need even more protection, take a look at our Do I Need a Mattress Protector? article.
Comfort layer: The comfort layer is a 5-zone support layer that’s a little firmer at the center of the mattress. It helps ensure your child’s spine is properly aligned by keeping the hips from sinking.
Support Layer: Instead of support foam, the Saatva has a coil core that’s dual-sided so that the mattress can be flipped. On the side that’s made for children 8 years and older, it has a Spinal Zone active wire that Saatva says promotes healthy sleep posture for young children and adolescents.
Base Layer: The base of the Saatva Youth is a simple, high-density support foam. It helps support the spring layers above it and improve overall durability for the mattress, so that it lasts many years for your child.

Shipping, Delivery & Returns
The Saatva Youth ships for free with White Glove delivery service anywhere in the contiguous USA. It ships in its full size, which means it won’t be compressed and rolled as a bed-in-a-box, like many online mattress companies. You’ll need to allow about four hours on the day of delivery for delivery, setup and old mattress removal. If you decide you don’t want the mattress, Saatva’s return policy states that a $99 transportation fee will be charged.
Saatva offers a 180-night trial period, so you’ll have up to four months to allow your child to test out the bed and let you know if it feels good to them. If they don’t like it, Saatva will pick up the mattress and refund your money.
The Saatva Youth is backed by a 15-year warranty. It’s completely nonprorated, so Saatva will replace the mattress during the first two years if it’s deemed defective. Saatva will repair and re-cover a Saatva mattress for a fee of $198 – which covers shipping both ways – during the rest of the warranty period.
The Saatva Youth is sold exclusively on the Saatva website. Saatva currently does not sell its mattresses through third-party retailers like Amazon.com. If you want to see a Saatva Youth in person, they operate one showroom in New York City.
When you’re looking for a new mattress for your child, you want a few things. You want it to be safe, of course. You want it to have a reasonable price point, because they’re eventually going to grow out of it. You also want it to be accommodating, because who knows when your child will change sleeping positions or have a growth spurt. Finally, you want something that’s easy to clean.
The Saatva Youth checks all these boxes and more, making it an excellent choice for parents who want to spend less than $1,000 on a mattress their child can grow into with age. It’s also a great choice for shoppers who want a mattress from a trustworthy company that’s known for making quality bedding products: Saatva has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, is BBB accredited and has an average customer rating of five stars on BBB.org.
Saatva only sells its high-quality mattresses online. The best way for you to try out the mattress is to order it, test it in your home for up to 180 nights, and return it if you feel it’s night right for your child.
Yes, the Saatva Youth can be used with loft beds and bunk beds. We recommend making sure the guardrail measures at least 5” above the mattress to provide added safety, as the Youth is thicker than most standard bunk bed mattresses.
The Saatva Youth can be purchased with or without a foundation, but, whether you get your foundation through Saatva or not, you’ll need to have a proper foundation if you don’t want to risk voiding the warranty. Saatava recommends a 4-legged metal bed frame for Full and Twin size beds. A box spring can also provide acceptable support for this mattress.
