How Does the Saatva Youth Mattress Feel?

Firmness

The Saatva Youth mattress is a flippable bed with dual-sided firmness. Both firmness levels fall at a medium-firm, with the side for younger kids slightly softer and more snuggly than the side for older kids.

Most children, particularly those who are in the three to 10 age range, sleep best on a medium-firm mattress. The surface is firm enough to protect very young kids from the risk of suffocation, and it supports every sleeping position

While this mattress is designed for kids aged three to 12, older kids who sleep strictly on their sides may do better on a bed with greater contouring. A bit more softness helps to evenly distribute body weight for side sleepers, especially if your child weighs 100 or more pounds.  For older kids who need more pressure relief, see the best soft mattresses.

Temperature

Most children love the feel of an all-foam mattress because they are easy to snuggle up in. Unfortunately, they are not as breathable as hybrid mattresses, so they can sleep hot. Children are usually less able to regulate their body temperature than adults, so fluctuating temperatures caused by a heat-retaining mattress can cause sleep loss or even exacerbate fevers when your child is sick.

As an innerspring mattress, the Saatva Youth sleeps cooler than many other beds designed for kids. If you’re looking specifically for a cooling mattress as your child grows older, you may want to check out our article on the best cooling mattresses

Support

The Saatva Youth mattress is made from high-quality materials known for their support and durability. Resilient innerspring coils and durable high-density foams create a mattress that’s likely to last 10 or more years, although we still recommend switching to a bed designed for adults once your child turns 13 or exceeds 100 pounds, whichever happens first.

Thanks to strong coils and dense foams, the edges of the Saatva Youth bed are both sturdy and comfortable. Solid edge support can help you sit comfortably on the edge for storytime, and it makes it less likely for your child to roll off of the mattress—which is especially important in bunk beds.

Back Sleepers

Kids who sleep on their backs are an excellent fit for the Saatva Youth mattress. Both sides are medium-firm with reinforced lumbar support. The balance between a soft top layer and reliable support means healthy spinal alignment at night. Proper alignment helps active kids heal quickly and is essential for developing good posture.

Only when your child starts to look more like an adult should you consider a thicker mattress built for bigger bodies. See our article on the best mattresses for back sleepers for your growing children.

Side Sleepers

Small kids who spend most of their time side sleeping do well on the Saatva Youth. It’s not until around 10 years old that a side sleeper requires greater cushioning at the hips and shoulders to keep the spine aligned.

For strict side sleepers who are no longer eight or younger, you may want to consider a bed with a softer feel, like a memory foam mattress. Our best mattresses for side sleepers article could help you narrow it down.

Stomach Sleepers

Similar to back sleepers, kids who like to sleep on their stomachs will find the right level of cushion and support on the Saatva Youth mattress. Firmer foam along the middle of the mattress and active wire lumbar support keep the hips from sinking in too far so your child can enjoy healthy posture while asleep.

Remember to flip the mattress onto the firmer side—the one designed for kids age eight and up—at the appropriate time to maintain proper support for the hips. And once your child’s weight reaches the triple digits, consider changing to one of the beds that made our best mattresses for stomach sleepers roundup.

Combination Sleepers

Most kids are combination sleepers, meaning they tend to change sleeping positions throughout the night. This is why we recommend that young kids sleep on responsive, medium-firm mattresses that facilitate ease of movement.

The Saatva Youth has a bouncy, innerspring, support layer that allows kids to toss and turn with ease. Another reason the Saatva Youth is great for kids is because it works well for all sleeping positions for kids who weigh less than 100 pounds.

Has your preteen or teen outgrown the Saatva? Head over to our best mattresses for combination sleepers page.

NERD RATING: Will this bed work for you?

Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Smaller Kids (< 50 lbs):  5 5 3
Average-weight Kids(50 – 100 lbs): 5 5 3
Bigger Kids (> 100 lbs):  3 3 2

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good,  3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Does It Fit You and Your Child’s Lifestyle?

Kids

The Saatva Youth is designed for kids ages three to 12. We particularly love this bed for younger kids as they transition from crib to mattress. The medium-firm surface keeps your kids safe during a time when an ultra-soft top layer can be dangerous due to suffocation risk. The responsive surface makes it easy to move around, and the Saatva accommodates every sleeping position for young kids. This Saatva is one of the best mattresses for kids.

Thanks to Saatva’s flippable design, you can simply flip your mattress over when your kid seems to outgrow the softer side—typically at eight, although it’s always helpful to consider your child’s size. Smaller children can stay on the softer side for longer, while those who are big for their age may need the firmer side sooner.

The side designed for older kids is slightly firmer. This added support is excellent for back and stomach sleepers until they weigh about 100 pounds. If your kid who’s 10 or older sleeps only on their side, you may want to consider a softer all-foam or hybrid mattress for added pressure relief

Because the Saatva Youth is designed to stay with kids as they age, we recommend it for kids who are currently nine or younger. If you have a child who’s 10 or older, or one who’s slightly younger but large for their age, it might benefit you to look for a mattress that’s built to support bigger bodies. This way you won’t need to transition to a new bed in a matter of two or three years.

Budget

The Saatva Youth is one of the most expensive children’s mattresses that we’ve seen, although the quality does support the cost. While the price point may not be a deal breaker if you have a young child who would keep this mattress for five or 10 years, it might not be the best choice for kids who are already nearing 12. Additionally, there are many other budget-friendly options for families who want to keep the cost down. For our budget-friendly picks, see the best affordable mattresses.

SaatvaYouthLayers

Construction: What’s Under the Surface?

The Saatva Youth is a simple three-layer mattress that’s designed specifically for kids. It has a flippable innerspring design with a coil core and foam comfort layers. Zoned support and added lumbar wire helps keep growing children’s spines properly aligned, which is good news for their posture.

Layer #1: Organic Cotton Cover

The handcrafted, hypoallergenic cover is made from organic cotton, which feels soft to the touch and helps keep the bed cool. The cover also has a water-resistant finish, an all-natural antimicrobial treatment and an internal waterproof barrier. If you are looking for an all-natural mattress, see the best organic mattress.

Layer #2: Zoned Comfort Layer (3-7 Side)

The comfort layer is a five-zone foam layer that’s a little firmer at the center of the mattress. It helps ensure your child’s spine is properly aligned by keeping the hips from sinking too far into the mattress. Softer foam gently hugs the shoulders of side sleepers. The foam is CertiPUR-US certified to be free from harmful chemicals like heavy metals and formaldehyde.

Layer #3: Durable Coil Support Core

A layer of bouncy, supportive coils delivers support that works for both sides of the mattress. This layer allows ample airflow, helping kids stay cool and dry as they sleep.

Layer #4: Spinal Zone Wire

Active wire support along the lumbar spine promotes healthy sleep posture for young children and adolescents.

Layer #5: High-Density Comfort Foam (8+ Side)

The comfort layer of the 8+ side is a simple high-density support foam. When the mattress is flipped to the side for younger kids, this layer helps support the springs above it and improve overall durability for the mattress, so that it lasts many years.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

The Saatva Youth ships with Saatva’s free white glove delivery service anywhere in the contiguous U.S. It isn’t compressed when it ships, which means the bed won’t be rolled and packaged as a bed-in-a-box, like many online mattress brands. You’ll need to be home during the date and time you select, so a team can set up your new mattress. If you would like, they can even get rid of the old mattress for you.

Warranty

The Saatva Youth is backed by a 12-year warranty. Saatva will replace the mattress during the first two years at no additional cost to the consumer if it’s deemed defective. The brand will repair and re-cover a Saatva mattress—adding a fee of $99 for shipping each way—during the rest of the warranty period.

For more information, see our Saatva Mattress Warranty Breakdown

Trial Period & Returns

Saatva’s return policy offers a 180-night sleep trial, so you’ll have nearly six months for your child to test out the bed and let you know if it feels good to them. If they don’t like it, Saatva will pick up the mattress and refund the cost of the bed during the home trial period. In that case, Saatva’s return policy states that a $99 transportation fee will be charged.

Saatva Youth Mattress FAQs

What Is the Best Mattress for a Kid?

It all depends on the age and sleeping habits of your child. Kids that are just leaving the crib should have a medium-firm or firmer mattress for safety. Most children and adults continue to prefer this firmness. However, side sleepers often require more cushion, especially as their bodies grow larger.

Most kids sleep best on a mattress that keeps them cool and dry, such as a hybrid or innerspring bed. These beds also have a springier surface which supports combination sleepers, including most young kiddos.

Is Saatva Worth the Money?

The Saatva Youth is a durable, high-quality mattress designed incredibly well for growing children. If you have the money to spend on a durable mattress, we would say yes. However, if it’s not in your price range, there are always other options.

The Saatva Classic is a luxury hybrid mattress designed for adults. Similar to the Saatva Youth, the Classic uses springs in the support layer. This makes both beds cool and easy to move around on.

We like the Saatva Classic for kids who have aged out of the Saatva Youth. The Classic comes in three firmness options: plush soft, luxury firm, and firm. The softest model is good for side-only sleepers, the luxury firm for those who like the medium-firm feel of the Saatva Youth but are simply too big, and the firm for kids who want an even firmer bed.

Unlike the polyfoam and innerspring materials of the Saatva Youth, the Loom & Leaf is a memory foam mattress. The all-foam construction provides better pressure relief than the Saatva Youth and is a good option for older kids and teens who want a mattress that can last them through college.

The Saatva Youth has a flippable design and a medium-firm feel. The Loom & Leaf comes in two firmnesses. The luxury firm has a similar firmness to the Youth, while the firm has a much sturdier feel. While the Youth’s surface is a bit springier, the Loom & Leaf better minimizes motion transfer, which is great for kids who share their bed with furry family members.

The Saatva Latex Hybrid is a high-end, eco-friendly mattress. Both the Saatva Youth and Saatva Latex Hybrid have responsive coils that make switching positions easy and keep the sleeping surface cool.

Only go for the Saatva Latex Hybrid if your child likes a firmer mattress. Its feel is on the firmer side of medium-firm, and it’s definitely stiffer than the Saatva Youth. The Latex Hybrid is excellent for kids with allergies thanks to its all-natural design, but it is not built for side sleepers

The Purple Kids bed is made with several layers of foam topped by the brand’s proprietary Purple Grid, a soft grid-shaped polymer that buckles strategically under pressure from a sleeping body. This technology creates a surface that’s softer than the Saatva Youth’s. Thanks to superior pressure relief, the Purple Kids mattress is better for side sleepers.

While the Purple Kids mattress is very comfortable and pressure-relieving, we like the Saatva Youth for kids who toss and turn a lot. Its firmer surface is more responsive, so it’s easier to get comfy in a new position. We love the cooling properties of each mattress. The Purple bed has a lower price tag but only comes in twin-size, while the Saatva is also available in twin XL and full-size

The Casper Element is an affordable all-foam mattress that’s built for adults. Thanks to its medium-firm feel and breathable top foam layer, it’s a good alternative to the Saatva Youth: particularly for kids 10 or older.

Because the Element isn’t as bouncy as the Youth, we believe the Youth is a better bed for kids three to eight. These young kids almost always toss and turn often, so a responsive surface is important. For older kids, the Element is an excellent alternative to a child’s mattress because it works for all sleeping positions and can last as your child grows into an adult.

See our Casper Element Mattress Review to learn more.

Pros/Cons

Pros

  • Dual-Sided Design: With one side built for kids three to seven and the other for children eight to 12, this mattress can support your child through their developmental years.
  • Responsive Surface: Young kids seem to be moving around all night long. Because the Saatva is a bit springy and easy to move around on, it can help children sleep through their late-night dancing routines.
  • Keeps Kids Cool: As kids grow, their bodies often have trouble regulating their nighttime temperature. That’s why it’s so important to have a mattress that supports airflow to keep kids cool, just like those found in the Saatva Youth
  • Waterproof Treatment: Saatva understands that accidents happen. That’s why they have a waterproof barrier under the cover, which has a water-resistant finish

Cons/Complaints

  • Price: The Saatva Youth mattress is undoubtedly one of the highest quality beds designed for kids, but it’s also one of the most expensive.
  • Not Cuddly: The Youth is an innerspring mattress with a medium-firm feel. It’s not as cuddly as some kids may prefer, especially older side sleepers.

What’s the Bottom Line?

When you’re looking for a new mattress for your child, there are a few key factors to keep in mind. You want it to be safe, of course. You also want it to be accommodating, because you never know when your child will change sleeping positions or have a growth spurt. Finally, you want something that’s easy to clean.

The Saatva Youth checks all these boxes and more, making it an excellent choice for parents who are willing to pay a little more for a mattress that can grow with their children. It’s also a great choice for shoppers who want a mattress from a trustworthy company that’s known for making quality bedding products.
