Casper Element Mattress Review

Interested in a Casper, but aren’t willing to shell out the bucks for one of their higher priced mattresses?  The Element might just be what you’re looking for.

Nerd Score: 4.7/5

Our Verdict: The Casper Element (formerly Essential) is not a fancy mattress. However, if you are looking for a good mattress at a good price point, and are not looking for many special features this could be a great option. It would also be an excellent option for a guest bedroom since it was designed to accommodate a wide range of people and not specifically geared towards one type of sleeper.

Best For…

May Not be Best For…

✅ Lighter people and children

✅ Couples

✅ Budget shoppers

❌People who don’t love memory foam

❌Sleepers with a lot of specific needs in a mattress

The Casper Element is the bargain option in the current Casper stable of mattresses. Casper calls the Element “an introduction to Casper” and that’s as apt a description as any.

The Casper Element is not particularly luxurious. It features three memory foam layers, one each designed for comfort, support, and stability. Casper says all three are also breathable and able to release heat. They shaved off 1.5 inches of thickness from the original Casper to save cash. And for any heavier people, that may be where they leave the discussion.

But it’s a solid choice for smaller and average side sleepers and smaller back sleepers.

The Element is one of two newer models of mattresses from this leader in the online mattress industry, which has been in the game for five years. The other is the luxury version. The Element is the one built for bargain shoppers and anyone new to memory foam mattresses.

You can look for these features with the Casper Element mattress:

  • Streamlined and easy on your budget made by industry leader
  • The top two foam layers are like the Casper signature model
  • Great for lighter people and children
  • Can also find mattresses at some Target stores
  • 100-night free trial
  • 10-year limited warranty
  • Free shipping and free returns in the contiguous U.S. and Canada
  • The foam layers are CertiPUR-USⓇ certified, i.e. free from harmful chemicals
  • Zippered cover can be removed for cleaning
  • The cover and the fire sock that surround the mattress are OEKO-TEX® certified

The Casper Element is an 8.5-inch memory foam mattress.

There are only three layers so heat isn’t getting trapped in a ton of memory foam material. The middle layer is made of the type of memory foam that has a bad reputation for retaining heat, but that feature is balanced by the fact that it sits away from your body in the middle of the structure.

Casper Element Mattress Firmness

The Casper Element is a medium firm mattress that ranks around 6.5 on the mattress firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest). The combination of the softer top layer and the support in the second layer means it performs fine in keeping your spine aligned and relieving most pressure on body curves in the shoulders, hips, derriere, etc.

Edge support

Partners who need to use the full surface of the mattress will find the Casper Element allows that. The edges supported sleepers well in any position and, because of the thinner profile, held up well while someone sat on the edge while getting ready for the day. No one will feel as if they’re about to slip off while tying their shoes.

Motion transfer

The Casper Element does a good job keeping motion on the side where it begins. Pretend you have to get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Your partner will feel some movement on the other side, but it will be limited.

Remember limiting motion transfer is important if you sleep with someone who often uses the potty at night or just wakes up earlier than you do. You don’t want all of that jostling to wake anyone up unnecessarily.

The 8.5-inch Casper Element is made of three foam layers. The Element is minus 1.5 inches compared to the original Casper and minus a full 3 inches on the Wave.

The top layer is 2 inches of breathable memory foam that feels soft thanks to the cover fabric and has some comfort and bounce due to the foam. “Breathable” is code for air can get in there and carry away some heat.

The second layer is 1.5 inches of responsive memory foam that works to ease pressure on your neck, hips, back and thighs by contouring to those curves. Again, Casper gives some thought to placement. Since this layer is in the middle, and not the top, any heat that is retained is further away from your body.

The bottom layer is 4.5 inches of a higher density support foam that provides a solid base for everything on top of it, including you as you sleep.

The Element is covered in a fabric cover that can be removed for cleaning and is meant to wear well.

Casper Mattress Trial

The Casper Element comes with a 100-night risk-free trial. If you don’t like the mattress before the 100 days is up, Casper will remove the mattress from your home and donate it to a local charity at no cost. Then you will get a full refund.

We always recommend sleeping on any new mattress for at least 30 days to break it in and get used to the feel of it before you decide to return it. It takes time to adapt, especially if you’re new to memory foam.

Casper Mattress Warranty

The Casper Element mattress comes with a 10-year limited warranty for the person who originally bought the mattress only. It covers defects in materials and workmanship when used as intended, including using the right foundation to support the combined weight of the sleeper and the mattress.

It covers sags greater than 1 inch that did not result from improper use or a weak foundation. It covers physical flaws that force the foam to crack, but not if you used the mattress improperly. It covers any problems with the zipper that came as a result of bad workmanship.

The Casper Element warranty requires you use their mattresses on the right type of foundation. They say the Element operates best on a platform or adjustable base. You can also use a slatted foundation if the slats are no more than 4 inches apart.

Unboxing a Casper Element Mattress

The Casper Element mattress will arrive rolled and compressed in a box via UPS in 2-7 business days after you place your order. All you have to do is unroll it on top of your foundation and wait for it to re-inflate.

Shipping is free anywhere in the lower 48 states and Canada. You’ll pay for shipping in Alaska and Hawaii. You can enjoy in-home setup in the contiguous U.S., but not in Alaska and Hawaii, for $100 extra. Bonus if you live in Los Angeles or New York, you can ask for same-day delivery if you order early enough in the day. Ask customer service.

Customer service

Speaking of how they serve customers, Casper has reps who will answer your questions—they say mattress-related or otherwise—seven days per week. Also, you can find Casper Element mattresses in Target stores in the U.S. Simply use the website’s store-finder function.

If you do buy one and then change your mind, they also promise to complete your refund in two weeks.

Nerd Score: 4.7/5

The Casper Element isn’t fancy, but you’re likely not looking for fancy when you purchase it. You know the score when you see the price at the start of your search.

If you want a deal, if you’re a combination sleeper, if you’re not afraid of memory foam, if you have a growing kid who needs a new mattress, the Casper Element may suit your needs.

The Element is a medium-firm mattress. “Medium-firm” is code for “this firmness level should suit a range of sleep positions.” It may not suit a range of bodies. Heavier people won’t find much help with pressure relief and contouring with the thinner profile (8.5 inches). It is one of our top picks for Best Mattress for the Money, so it is a great option for those looking for a quality product within a budget.

Remember that a thinner profile and fewer layers will wear down more quickly than a thicker mattress. It won’t be as durable as thicker mattresses with more layers. Also, the thinner profile will make it a tough sell for side sleepers who really need contouring and support around their shoulders.

The Casper Element wasn’t meant to do everything for every sleeper. It’s presented as a budget option from a reputable company and for anyone who might want an affordable introduction to memory foam.
