How Does the EcoSleep Mattress Feel?

Firmness

As a flippable latex hybrid mattress, the EcoSleep offers two firmness levels in one. Brooklyn Bedding describes one side as firm and the other as medium-firm, which we rated roughly 7/10 and 6/10 on the 1–10 firmness scale, respectively. Both sides are firmer than industry averages, which is expected given that the bed combines latex and coils to create a highly durable, supportive sleep surface.

The firm side is pretty firm, so unless you’re a heavyweight back or stomach sleeper, you may experience some pressure buildup. It has just one thin layer of latex foam in the comfort section, so the feel is dense with minimal conforming.

The medium-firm side, which has two layers of latex foam, offers a little more give in combination with the support. Your hips and shoulders will sink in modestly for some pressure relief, which makes this one of the best mattresses for back sleepers in particular. Most side sleepers will also find this side too firm.

Temperature

Like most latex hybrid mattresses, the EcoSleep should sleep very cool. The coil support layer allows air to flow freely through the mattress. Latex is also known to be much more breathable than traditional foams, like memory foam and polyfoam, and it shouldn’t trap heat.

The bed’s firmness levels also give it a nice and airy feel, given that softer mattresses tend to hold more body heat than firmer ones. The wool cover is also a naturally breathable material and shouldn’t trap heat on the surface of the bed. All told, we consider the EcoSleep to be one of the best cooling mattresses in the Brooklyn Bedding collection.

Support by Sleeping Positions

Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  4 4 1
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): 5 5 2
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  4 4 2

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

The extra-supportive feel is one of the highlights of the EcoSleep. This is a dense, bouncy, generally firm mattress, so if you’re looking for a bed that prioritizes durability and support, it’s an excellent choice.

Latex is naturally resilient, and coil cores tend to have longer lifespans than foam cores, so the EcoSleep could last even longer than the average hybrid (10+ years) regardless of your body type

It also has great edge support thanks to the coils, which stabilize the entire mattress and create an even edge-to-edge sleeping plane for sleepers who need to use the full surface area of the bed or who like to sit at the edges of the bed without noticeable sinkage.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers who are average-weight should experience a nice mix of pressure relief and even spinal alignment, especially on the medium-firm side. If you’re lightweight, you’ll find that the mattress feels firm and supportive on either side, but the medium-firm side will offer more conforming around the shoulders to alleviate any pressure.

Heavyweight sleepers will find the best support on the bed’s firm side, but the medium-firm side should also support you well if you find the firm side a touch too firm.

Stomach Sleepers

The EcoSleep is one of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers, who need a supportive surface that will keep the hips lifted to prevent bowing in the low back.

Heavyweight stomach sleepers will prefer the extra support found on the firm side of the mattress, while average-weight stomach sleepers should find the even sleeping plane they need on the medium-firm side. Lightweight stomach sleepers may find the bed too firm on either side, but if you really like a firm feel, you may feel comfortable on the medium-firm side of the mattress.

Side Sleepers

Unfortunately, both sides of the EcoSleep are too firm for heavyweight side sleepers. The latex, while durable and supportive, will cause bunching at the hips and shoulders in this position.

Lightweight side sleepers are also unlikely to find the pressure relief they need in this position on either side. Average-weight side sleepers may find a nice balance of cushioning and support on the medium-firm side of the EcoSleep, but the best mattresses for side sleepers provide more pressure relief.

Combination Sleepers

Combination sleepers who rotate between their back and stomach throughout the night are most likely to feel at home on this mattress. The latex foam layers on either side will provide a nice mix of responsiveness and pressure relief, making it easy to both change positions and find subtle conforming on either side of the bed.

Heavyweight combination sleepers will benefit most from the firm side of the bed, and average-weight combination sleepers will likely feel best switching positions on the medium-firm side. Lightweight combination sleepers will probably find the bed too firm, even though it will be easy to change positions on.

Eco-Conscious Shoppers

The EcoSleep is made with organic cotton, Joma wool that’s sustainably sourced, and natural latex. Its construction will appeal to many eco-conscious shoppers. It also costs less compared to other latex hybrids ($1,249 for a Queen size), making it especially appealing to eco-conscious consumers on a budget.

Couples

This mattress has a few things going for it that will appeal to couples. Both sides feel fairly firm and responsive, giving it a springiness that could be attractive to couples who prioritize sex in their mattress purchase. However, because latex and coils are bouncy materials, the mattress has high rates of motion transfer. If you’re sensitive to your partner’s movements at night, you’ll want to keep this in mind.

Construction: What’s Under the Surface?

The EcoSleep Hybrid is an 11.5” hybrid latex with a flippable construction. It has a relatively simple design with a cotton and Joma wool cover, layers of latex on both sides, and a shared support core of pocketed coils. The dense, responsive comfort layers and supportive coils give the bed a firm, supportive feel that’s best for strict back and stomach sleepers who are average-weight or heavyweight.

Layer #1: Organic Cotton Cover

Both sides of the mattress are encased in an organic cotton cover quilted with Joma wool. The wool adds softness and breathability, and it’s sustainably sourced.

Layer #2: Total Latex Comfort and Support Layers

The medium-firm side of the EcoSleep has 1.5” of plush, ventilated natural latex that’s followed by an additional 1.5” of natural latex.

Layer #3: 6” Pocketed Coils

What it means: The two sides of this flippable mattress share the same support core, and the coils stabilize the entire bed. They also promote strong airflow throughout the mattress to help the sleeper stay cool.

Layer #4: Total Latex Comfort Layer

The firmer side contains 1.5” of ventilated natural latex in the comfort portion, but has no additional layer beneath it.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

The EcoSleep ships free if you live in the contiguous USA. It typically takes three to five business days for your mattress to be delivered. Shipping to Hawaii or Alaska is available for $125 per mattress, and shipping to Canada is available starting at $250. White glove delivery is not available at this time.

Once your mattress arrives, you’ll need to remove it from the box, where it will be compressed and rolled, and unroll it onto your sleep surface (box spring, foundation, adjustable base, etc.). This needs to be done within 60 days of delivery in order for the warranty to remain valid. It should take 24–48 hours for the mattress to expand to its full size.

Warranty

The EcoSleep Hybrid mattress comes with a 10-year warranty. The coverage begins on the date you purchase the mattress, and Brooklyn Bedding will replace or repair a defective mattress for as long as the warranty is valid. Warranty coverage is contingent on proper foundation support. Stains also void the warranty.

The policy covers sagging and indentations 1” or deeper and manufacturing flaws in the mattress that cause the latex layers to split or crack. The warranty doesn’t cover normal increases in softness, stains, wear and tear, sheet fit, the mattress handles, or shallow impressions (less than 1” deep).

It’s important to note that the mattress handles, which you might assume are designed to help you flip and lift the mattress, are not covered by the warranty. Brooklyn Bedding states that they are decorative and should only be used to adjust the mattress slightly, not to lift or transport it.

Trial Period & Returns

Most online mattress companies now give customers a sleep trial period, which is a predetermined amount of time that you have to try the mattress, adjust to it, and decide whether it’s the right fit for you. Brooklyn Bedding offers a 120-night sleep trial with the EcoSleep, and you can return it for a full refund during that time period if you don’t like it.

Brooklyn Bedding does require a 30-night break-in period, which gives your body ample time to adjust to the new mattress before you make a decision. If you decide to return it, Brooklyn Bedding requests that you donate the mattress to a local charity. You’ll be responsible for coordinating the donation, but Brooklyn Bedding will offer additional assistance if needed. Your credit card refund can take three to four business days.

Comparing the EcoSleep Mattress

Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep vs. Brooklyn Bedding Bloom Hybrid

Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep Mattress is Best For: Brooklyn Bedding Bloom Mattress is Best For:
Hot Sleepers Shoppers Looking for Multiple Firmness Options
Back and Stomach Sleepers Side Sleepers
Eco-Conscious Shoppers Sleepers Looking for a Flippable Design

The Bloom Hybrid is also a latex hybrid that’s available in three firmness options (soft, medium, and firm). It’s better for lightweight folks and side sleepers, given that it comes in a soft option. However, the flippable EcoSleep gives sleepers more versatility in a single design.

Apart from the flippable design and the firmness options, the EcoSleep and the Bloom Hybrid are relatively similar. The Bloom Hybrid costs more than the EcoSleep, so eco-conscious shoppers on a budget may prefer the EcoSleep. Both have eco-friendly materials and a pocketed coil core.

Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep vs. Brooklyn Bedding Signature

Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep Mattress is Best For: Brooklyn Bedding Signature Mattress is Best For:
Hot Sleepers Shoppers Looking for Multiple Firmness Options
Back and Stomach Sleepers Side Sleepers
Eco-Conscious Shoppers Sleepers Looking for a Gel-Infused Bed

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature is a hybrid mattress that’s available in soft, medium, and firm options. Both the EcoSleep and the Signature have pocketed coil layers and offer dense, supportive sleeping surfaces on the firm side and in the firm model, respectively.

The most notable differences between the two beds are that, instead of latex, the Signature has gel-infused polyfoam in the comfort portion. This isn’t as durable as latex, so the Signature may have a shorter lifespan than the EcoSleep. Polyfoam also absorbs more body heat than latex, so the EcoSleep may be a better choice for hot sleepers. However, the Signature is more affordable than the EcoSleep, so it will appeal to value shoppers.

EcoSleep vs. Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Hybrid

Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep Mattress is Best For: Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Mattress is Best For:
Hot Sleepers Shoppers Looking for Multiple Firmness Options
Back and Stomach Sleepers All Body Types
Eco-Conscious Shoppers Combination Sleepers

The Brooklyn Aurora is the company’s most popular model, and it’s a hybrid mattress available in soft, medium, and firm options. All three models feature innerspring coils and copper-infused gel foam, so it will suit people who sleep hot and a wide range of body types and sleeping positions.

Though more expensive than the EcoSleep, the Aurora has more cooling features. The medium model has also been known to provide a universally comfortable feel for just about any body type and sleeping position, making it a great choice for first-time mattress shoppers and guest bedrooms.

Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep vs. Purple

Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep Mattress is Best For: Purple Mattress is Best For:
Hot Sleepers Shoppers Looking for a “Floating Feel” Mattress
Back and Stomach Sleepers Side Sleepers
Eco-Conscious Shoppers Sleepers Looking for Pressure Relief

The Purple mattress has a unique feel due to the bed’s top layer, a proprietary Hyper-Elastic Grid. The grid offers a floating feel, a cool temperature profile, and a mixture of pressure relief and support. The Purple is an excellent mattress for back sleepers who sleep hot and anyone who’s interested in innovative materials in their new mattress.

The Purple also offers more conforming for side sleepers than the EcoSleep, so if you’re a lightweight or average-weight side sleeper picking between the two, we recommend the Purple. People who want a dense, firm, supportive feel should opt for the EcoSleep.

Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep vs. Casper

Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep Mattress is Best For: Casper Mattress is Best For:
Hot Sleepers Shoppers Looking for a Softer Mattress
Back and Stomach Sleepers All Sleeping Positions
Eco-Conscious Shoppers Memory Foam Lovers

The Casper Original is one of the best all-foam mattresses on the bed-in-a-box market, offering comfort for all sleeping positions. It’s a universally comfortable, all-purpose memory foam mattress that works great for guest bedrooms, first-time homebuyers, and anyone purchasing a mattress who isn’t sure about their specific needs as a sleeper.

The Casper is also more affordable than the EcoSleep, which will appeal to budget shoppers. However, people who sleep hot, know they need a firm, dense mattress, or are eco-conscious consumers may want to pay the extra several hundred dollars for the EcoSleep.

Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep vs. Tempur-Pedic

Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep Mattress is Best For: Tempur-Pedic Mattress is Best For:
Hot Sleepers Shoppers Looking for Pressure Relief
Back and Stomach Sleepers People Looking for a Noise Reducing Mattress
Eco-Conscious Shoppers Sleepers Looking for a Softer Mattress

Tempur-Pedic mattresses are known for their luxurious, high-quality memory foam comfort layers, but they also have a large price tag to match. They’re great options for people who want to invest more for extra pressure relief and customization, and they offer excellent motion isolation and noise reduction due to the viscous foam comfort layers.

If you crave the sinking sand feel, go with a Tempur-Pedic. If you prefer a dense, responsive, latex feel, you’ll prefer the EcoSleep. People who sleep hot will find more cooling on the EcoSleep, and shoppers with a tight budget will also prefer the EcoSleep.

Pros/Cons

Pros

  • Cost: Most latex hybrids with eco-friendly materials cost much more than the EcoSleep Hybrid, making it a great pick for consumers who prioritize sustainable, natural materials but don’t want to spend an arm and a leg.
  • Cooling: The EcoSleep’s latex comfort layers and coil core allow ample airflow through the bed, making it a good choice for hot sleepers.
  • Flippable Design: If you want versatility in one mattress, the EcoSleep’s flippable design gives you the option to choose between a firm feel and a medium-firm feel.

Complaints

  • Firmness: The main complaint about this mattress is its firmness levels. Some shoppers find even the medium-firm side too firm and toss and turn in an attempt to find a comfortable position. It’s important to understand how the firmness levels of both sides will work for your primary sleeping position and body type.
  • Weight: The Twin size EcoSleep mattress is 71 lbs, and the King size is 122 lbs, which makes this mattress on the heavy side. You’ll likely need two people for setup and rotations.

What’s the Bottom Line?

With eco-friendly materials, excellent cooling features, and a flippable design, the EcoSleep is a great mattress for eco-conscious shoppers who sleep hot and want the choice between two firmness settings in their mattress.

The EcoSleep’s dense, supportive feel will provide lift throughout the entire body with a little hug. It’s best for strict back and stomach sleepers who are average-weight and heavyweight. Also, the EcoSleep’s lower-than-average price point (relative to other latex hybrids) makes it appealing to shoppers who want an eco-friendly mattress on a budget.
