Tempur-Adapt Mattress Review Video

To hear directly from the Nerds, watch this video to learn about the Tempur-Adapt mattress performance is all our areas of testing and who we recommend this mattress for.

Tempur-Adapt Mattress Firmness and Feel

Tempur-Adapt Mattress Firmness

At Mattress Nerd, we like to measure firmness on a scale of 1–10, where a 1 is softer than sleeping on air and a 10 is firmer than sleeping on rock. With that said, the Tempur-Adapt’s medium option (there’s three firmness levels: soft, medium, and firm) measures in at a  medium-firm 6.5 out of 10.

This level of firmness works great for stomach sleepers of all weights who need extra hip support, along with heavyweight sleepers too. However, many side sleepers will find this much firmness places extra pressure on their hips and shoulders.

What Does the Tempur-Adapt Feel Like?

Although it’s on the firmer side for a memory foam bed, the Tempur-Adapt has the doughy, contouring feel that you’d expect from any other foam mattress. Still, this bed has a solid feel when you first lay on it, as it takes some time to fully sink down into.

The Tempur-Adapt mattress feels solid and supportive, even around the edges, giving it a durable feel too. And, in terms of temperature, this bed feels cool to the touch, but like many memory foam beds, it doesn’t have superb temperature control, and you can feel it absorbing your body heat throughout the night.

What Sleeping Position Is Tempur-Adapt Mattress Best For?

Body Type:Back SleepersStomach SleepersSide Sleepers
Lightweight< 130 lbs:553
Average-weight130–230 lbs:543
Heavyweight> 230 lbs:542

1 = Very poor     2 = Not good     3 = Fair     4 = Good     5 = Excellent

Back Sleepers

The best mattress for back sleepers support the lower back and provide sleepers with the right support to maintain the natural “S” curve of their spine. Since the Tempur-Adapt has the contouring relief of memory foam and the support of a firmer mattress, this bed is really the best of both worlds for lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight back sleepers.

Side Sleepers

Next up, side sleepers do best on mattresses that are softer and relieve pressure from key areas on the body, like the shoulder and hips. In this case, the Tempur-Adapt has too firm of a feel for most side sleepers, and, regardless of whether you’re a lightweight, average-weight, or heavyweight sleeper, you’re likely to run into pressure-point issues on this bed.

Stomach Sleepers

The best mattresses for stomach sleepers are usually the firmest. This is because stomach sleepers need a bed that will keep their hips from sinking down and throwing their spine alignment out of whack. Since the Tempur-Adapt is one of the more solid foam mattresses, lightweight stomach and average-weight sleepers will find plenty firm, but some heavyweight sleepers may want even more firmness.

Combination Sleepers

Combination sleepers don’t really stick to any one sleeping position, so they need a mattress that’s responsive and lets them move around easily. However, since the Tempur-Adapt is an all-foam bed, it feels more sinking than responsive, making it less than ideal for lightweight, average-weight, or heavyweight sleepers.

Tempur-Adapt Mattress Performance

Is The Tempur-Adapt Mattress Cooling?

The Tempur-Adapt mattress feels cool to the touch, but it doesn’t offer much in the way of all-night cooling. Like many other foam beds, the Tempur-Adapt contours and molds to the body, leaving little room for breathability either. So, if you’re a hot sleeper, this bed may not be your top choice.

Edge Support

Edge support is how well your bed can hold weight at its edges without collapsing and dumping said person onto the floor. For couples and seniors, this extra bed space can be a dealbreaker. So, if that sounds like you, you’re in luck because the Tempur-Adapt has killer edge support for a foam mattress.

Responsiveness

Like we mentioned with combination sleepers, responsiveness is how well your bed lets you move around and change position on it. In this case, the Tempur-Adapt has more “sink” than “bounce,” so it scores pretty low on responsiveness overall.

Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?

Motion isolation is when your mattress can absorb and muffle movement at one part of the mattress before it shakes the entire bed. An all-too-familiar example of this is when you can’t sleep because your partner is too busy tossing and turning waking you up.

Fortunately for you, foam mattresses excel at muffle motion transfer, and the Tempur-Adapt is as good as it gets, even for an all-foam bed.

Noise

When you think of a noisy mattress, you probably think of a squeaky innerspring bed. However, like any other foam mattress, the Tempur-Adapt has no creaky parts, so this bed is virtually silent—unless you drop it or something.

Pain Relief

Along with being quiet, another huge benefit of choosing all-foam mattresses is that they’re cradling the body and reducing aches and pains. For this specific bed, the Tempur-Adapt offers excellent relief for back sleepers, but places too much pressure on the hips and shoulders for side sleepers.

Sex

If you can’t stay cool, and you can’t move around easily, then your mattress probably isn’t great for sex. So, if you plan on getting the Tempur-Adapt, just know you won’t be doing much but sleeping on it.

Off-Gassing

Off-gassing is like the “new car smell” for mattresses. It may smell a little weird, but nothing harmful. With the Tempur-Adapt, unlike bed-in-a-box brands, this odor is pretty minimal since the mattress doesn’t have to expand.

Durability

If you like a mattress enough to buy it (especially a more expensive one), then you want to get as much mileage, or years, out of it as possible. And, good news, since the Tempur-Adapt is a thicker mattress with strong edge support that doesn’t require “inflating”, you shouldn’t have any durability issues.

Along with Tempur-Pedic’s 10-year warranty, you can expect to enjoy this bed for longer than the average mattress lifespan of seven years.

Tempur-Adapt Mattress Construction: What’s it made of?

The Tempur-Adapt is a medium-firm foam bed with a simple, but firm and durable construction. Although it lacks cooling features in its support and comfort layers, this mattress is still cool to the touch, and it features plenty of contouring and pressure relief.

tempur adapt construction

Layer #1: Mattress Cover:

The top layer of this Tempur-Pedic bed is a premium-knit fabric that has a luxurious and soft feel that’s initially cool to the touch.

Layer #2: Tempur-ES Comfort Layer:

Below the mattress cover is the first and softest layer of contouring foam. This Tempur-ES foam works by gently conforming to the body throughout the night, encouraging deeper sleep and relief.

Layer #3: Tempur-APR Support Layer:

Next up is the Tempur-APR support layer. Unlike the comfort layer above, this layer absorbs the weight and pressure of the body, with a more solid feel.

Layer #4: High-Density Base Layer:

At the very bottom of the Tempur-Adapt is a thick, high-density layer of foam that’s responsible for making your mattress firmer and more durable. This base layer aligns the foam layers (and you) above it, giving this bed its medium-firm feel from the bottom up.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

If you choose to buy the Tempur-Adapt, it will ship to anywhere in the United States for free (excluding Alaska and Hawaii) with white glove delivery. And, it should take about one to two weeks for your bed to arrive.

Once your bed arrives, it’ll be fully set up, unlike a bed-in-a-box, so you can start enjoying it right away.

Trial Period & Returns

After your Tempur-Adapt bed has arrived, you’ll have 90 days to try it out, and at any point during that trial you can return your mattress for a full-refund. However, the cost of shipping your mattress back is not covered by the company.

Warranty

Once you’ve decided to keep your Tempur-Adapt, you’ll receive a 10-year limited warranty that covers manufacturing defects and indentations, or sagging, of over 0.75” in depth.

However, this warranty does not cover normal wear and tear or any abuse (including putting the mattress on an incorrect bed frame), and it does not apply to anyone but the original buyer or anyone who purchased the mattress through Amazon.

Addressing Tempur-Adapt Mattress Complaints

Too Firm

A few Tempur-Adapt buyers complained that their mattress was unexpectedly firm and uncomfortable for a foam mattress. Several of these buyers also claimed that they were average-weight sleepers or heavier, and the mattress was still too firm for them.

While the Tempur-Adapt is definitely firmer than the average all-foam mattress, its solidness should only be an issue for side sleepers who need more softness and pressure relief. So, these complaints apply pretty much only to side sleepers. Lastly, for side sleepers wanting more softness, they can choose the “soft” option for their Tempur-Adapt.

Too Hot

Several customers, regardless of sleeping position and body type, complained that the Tempur-Adapt mattress felt hot and uncomfortable for the entire night. Although this mattress isn’t unusually hot for a foam mattress, it’s important to consider that all-foam beds in general tend to sleep hotter than other kinds of mattresses and that the Tempur-Adapt doesn’t have any specific cooling features to counter this.
