Scoliosis refers to exaggerated curvature of the spine and typically develops during puberty and worsens with age. Choosing the right mattress is essential for a good night’s sleep for everyone, but this is especially true for individuals with scoliosis, as the wrong mattress can exacerbate spinal and lower back pain and make it very difficult to rest.

The best mattress for scoliosis will provide adequate support, have some conforming to target pressure points, and provide a firmness level that suits the sleeper’s preferences and body type, among other qualities.

In this mattress review, we share our top picks for the best mattresses for scoliosis in 2024. We also share a buyer’s guide with important information you need to know to ensure you choose the right mattress. Pros of the Saatva Mattress
Great edge support
Several firmness options
Sleeps cool
Cons of the Saatva Mattress
Expensive

While most innerspring mattresses don’t provide enough contouring and pressure relief for those with scoliosis, the Saatva has layers of foam that enhance comfort and comes in three firmness settings for a truly customized experience. Whether you choose the Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, or Firm version of the bed, you’ll receive a mattress that’s thoughtfully designed with a Euro-top cover, comfort layers of polyfoam and memory foam, and responsive, pocketed steel coils.

While this is among the more expensive models in our list, most customers are surprised to find that the Saatva is a value pick considering the quality of its materials and the complexity of its design. If you’ve suffered from scoliosis for many years and are ready to invest in a customized mattress whose firmness level and height are perfectly suited to your body and back, we recommend looking into a Saatva innerspring. The Saatva comes with a 120-night trial, free White Glove delivery, and a 15-year warranty.

What our testers say: “The two layers of lumbar support make the Saatva Classic a great mattress for people with back pain. With three firmness options, it can accommodate almost every sleeping position and body type, too.” – Loren, Lead Mattress Tester

Pros of the WinkBed Mattress
Sleeps cool
Good for a variety of sleepers
Responsive
Cons of the WinkBed Mattress
Not the best motion isolation

The WinkBeds mattress has the support of a hybrid mattress with the plush pillow top for comfort and cradling around the pressure points, providing sleepers an excellent blend of firmness and cushion. Made with those who suffer from back pain in mind, decompression support for your spine relaxes muscles and keeps muscles aligned. In between the coil system is a lumbar support pad that provides additional support where you need it.

We think that this construction is an especially great option for stomach sleepers, who should love the balance of comfort and support that the WinkBed provides. Back sleepers and side sleepers, depending on the firmness level they choose, should also find the proper spinal alignment that they’re looking for on this mattress. With a lifetime warranty and multiple firmness options, WinkBeds is made to suit the individual sleeper.

What our testers say: “Some of the WinkBed’s best features include temperature regulation, strong edge support, and responsive materials. In addition, the mattress is available in four different firmness options, making the WinkBed a good option for a wide variety of sleepers.” – Loren, Lead Mattress Tester

Who Might Like the WinkBed Mattress

  • Hot sleepers as the gel-infused memory foam and breathable layering keeps you cool
  • Combination sleepers as it can support a variety of sleeping positions
  • All sizes of sleepers with its support and firmness

Who Might Not Like the WinkBed Mattress

  • Memory foam purists as it has coils in the mattress to promote airflow
  • Light sleepers due to its low performance in motion isolation

What Users Say

On the WinkBeds site, this mattress received a 4.8 out of 5 stars, from 8,414 reviews. The areas to note were the customer service and the mattress’s ability to support all types of sleeping positions. However, there were complaints that it was either “too soft” or “too firm,” resulting in pain in some customers.

Pros of the Helix Mignight Luxe
Responsive
Great edge support
Good for those with back pain
Cons of the Helix Midnight Luxe
Not best for heavyweight sleepers

The Helix Midnight Luxe offers the targeted support needed for back pain and scoliosis. Zoned lumbar support coils protect the spine and keep it aligned in all sleeping positions. Additionally, high-density memory foam delivers quality pressure relief around the shoulders and hips.

With its hybrid mixture of polyfoam and supportive coils, polyfoam provides ergonomic support and gel memory foam contours around pressure points. Although at a higher price, the Helix Midnight Luxe is worth the investment for those looking for a mattress that delivers on its support and spinal protection.

What our testers say: “The Midnight Luxe has a cushioning feel, but the foam doesn’t contour to every inch of your frame. You sink into the foam a little, but not too far. The coils keep you lifted and add bounce to the feel of the mattress.” – Rachael, Editor & Mattress Tester

Who Might Like the Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress

  • Combination sleepers as the mattress can support you in multiple sleeping positions
  • Hot sleepers as the multiple breathable layers will help the mattress to not hold onto your body heat
  • Those with back pain with its firmness

Who Might Not Like the Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress

  • Heavyweight stomach sleepers because it won’t provide the appropriate support or comfort
  • Light sleepers concerned about motion transfer as it is pretty average at motion isolation
  • Budget shoppers due to its higher price tag

What Users Say

On the Helix site, this mattress received a 4.5 out of 5 star review, out of 5,281 reviews. Praise is given to the comfort and satisfaction levels with this purchase, as well as the support and pressure relief for sleepers. However, there are complaints of users waking up sore due to the softness of mattress.

Pros of the Nectar Premier Copper Mattress
Great for average-weight back and side sleepers
Great for combination sleepers
Sleeps cool
Cons of the Nectar Premier Copper Mattress
Not the best edge support
Not firm enough for average to heavyweight stomach or side sleepers

Individuals with scoliosis need to sleep flat on their backs so they can keep their spine in a straight and neutral position. The Nectar Premier Copper scored a 5 out of 10 on our firmness scale, which means it’s right in the middle at the medium level, making it great for back sleepers. The feel of this bed is thick and dough-y, so expect to sink into the 4” comfort layer, especially if you are a light to average weight body type. This mattress will cushion your pressure points and provide you with that spinal support that is so important for scoliosis concerns.

The Nectar Premier Copper is a bed-in-a-box which means it comes compressed and rolled up in a large package that gets shipped right to your front door— making it a convenient and quick buying option! On a final note, the Nectar Premier Copper comes with a 365-night sleep trial, as well as a lifetime warranty, and free shipping to the contiguous United States! If you order from Alaska or Hawaii, you will be charged an added shipping fee.

What our testers say: “If you’re set on a memory foam bed, this will be one of the better options that will still give you a decent level of responsiveness.” – Loren, Lead Mattress Tester

Pros of the Nolah Original Mattress
Good option for people with back pain
Easy to move around on
Good motion isolation
Cons of the Nolah Original Mattress
Bad edge support
Below-average performance for most stomach sleepers

The Nolah Signature has a firmness level of five out of ten. This middle-of-the-road feel is perfect for back sleepers, particularly lightweight and average-weight ones. While in this position, it does a great job of keeping your spine aligned, which is important for reducing scoliosis-related pain.

In addition to being good for back sleepers with scoliosis, the Nolah Signature also has a nice springy feel that makes moving around on its surface a breeze. So, while it may have been painful for you to change sleeping positions or get in and out of bed before, the Nolah Signature should make it a bit easier on you.

What our testers say: “Nolah mattresses were built with a latex-like foam that operates like a hybrid, giving you the bounce of latex and the cushioning of coils. The Nolah Original is specifically built for side sleepers, and it’s one of the best mattresses for side sleepers on the market.” Becca, Editor & Mattress Tester

Pros of the DreamCloud Mattress

Good edge support
Good responsiveness
Cons of the DreamCloud Mattress
Not budget friendly
Difficult to set up
Not the best choice for side sleepers

If you tend to change sleeping positions throughout the night, you may have experienced some difficulty in the past; not just because of scoliosis, but also because an old, sagging mattress can restrict movement. We gave the DreamCloud a perfect score on our ease-of-movement test, so you shouldn’t have any trouble switching positions on this mattress.

In fact, the DreamCloud scored a four out of five or higher on all of our performance tests. So really, this mattress has a lot going for it. It can help you stay cool at night, keep you from being woken up by your partner’s movements, and the high durability means it will likely maintain its structural integrity for years to come.

What our Testers Say:

“The DreamCloud mattress brings a high-quality, hotel-like feel to the bed-in-a-box market. It performed well in all of our tests, and while it’s not a perfect fit for every sleeper, it’s a great option for a lot of people. Specifically, we recommend it to couples, back sleepers, stomach sleepers under 230 lbs, and hot sleepers.” – Becca Fair, Mattress Tester

Pros of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Mattress
Sleeps cool with base layer of coils
Great responsiveness
Great at isolation motion
Cons of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Mattress
Not the best edge support
Off-gassing smell
Not Soft Enough for Side Sleepers

As Brooklyn Bedding’s flagship mattress, the Brooklyn Signature combines the best of all the brand has to offer. It’s built with dense layers of exclusive comfort foam and supportive, responsive coils. The Signature offers enough pressure relief and pressure point contouring for reliable comfort, and the coils keep the spine lifted in alignment.

Plus, you can choose from three different firmness levels, depending on which best suits your sleeping position, body type, and comfort preferences. We recommend the soft version to side sleepers; the medium and firm versions don’t have enough sinkage for the average side sleeper.

What our Testers Say:

“Right off the bat, we love the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid mattress because it’s affordable and it comes in three firmness options. We tested the “medium” firmness level in our sleep lab and found that it worked well for back sleepers and heavier side sleepers, but not as well for stomach sleepers.” – Loren Bullock, Lead Mattress Tester

Who Might Like the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Mattress

  • Those who want the most bang for their buck
  • Combination sleepers
  • Hot sleepers
  • Back sleepers

Who Might Not Like the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Mattress

  • Memory foam mattress purists
  • Stomach sleepers with heavier body types
  • Side sleepers with sensitive joints

What Users Say:

On the Brooklyn Bedding website, this mattress scored a 4.7 out of 5 stars, from 10,198 reviews. The reviews speak highly of the comfort levels, claiming it to be a great mix between softness and support. There were complaints against the customer experience and support as no one has gotten back to them in a while or still haven’t received their mattress.

Pros of the Casper Wave Hybrid Mattress
Sleeps cool
Good at relieving joint and back pain
Good motion isolation
Cons of the Casper Wave Hybrid Mattress
Expensive
Might be too soft for some

Casper, a popular and well-known bed-in-a-box company, released the Casper Wave as a luxury all-foam model that’s 13” thick and has added support throughout the center third of the mattress. This zoned support system is designed with waves (small grooves) that contain gel pods to increase the likelihood of spinal alignment for the torso while providing conforming for the shoulder area.

If mattresses that contour your curves very closely result in better spinal relief for you, you’ll love the Casper Wave. It definitely feels like you’re sinking “into” this mattress rather than sleeping on a firm surface. Despite the all-foam construction, you shouldn’t sleep hot thanks to high-quality ventilated materials that release body heat. The Casper Wave also has excellent motion isolation and noise reduction, making it a great luxury pick for scoliosis patients who sleep with a partner. The Casper Wave comes with a 100-night sleep trial, a 10-year warranty, and ships free to the contiguous U.S.

What Our Testers Say:

“The Casper Wave Hybrid is one of the best mattresses for people with back pain or body aches thanks to multiple layers designed for ergonomic support. Its medium firmness is softer than the average bed, with a cloud-like top layer that deeply hugs the body for top-notch pressure relief.” – Rachael Harris, Mattress Tester

Pros of the Bear Elite Hybrid Mattress
Sleeps cool
Multiple firmness options
Good pressure relief
Cons of the Bear Elite Hybrid Mattress
Not a good fit for heavyweight sleepers

Do you sometimes wake up in the middle of the night not just in pain, but also feeling uncomfortably warm? This might mean that you’re a hot sleeper, in which case you’ll want to look for a mattress that does a good job of regulating temperature. The Bear Hybrid is one such mattress.

During our lab tests, we were impressed with this mattress’s ability to keep our spines aligned and our body temperatures neutral. The hybrid construction certainly contributes to these two attributes, as it provides a supportive, breathable foundation for you to sleep on.

What our testers say: “The Bear Elite has a good balance of sink and lift, meaning that the mattress’s hand-quilted top layer has enough cushioning to feel soft but also gives enough support from the coils below. That said, while lying on this mattress, you can’t feel the coil support layer under you.” – Ashton, Editor & Mattress Tester

Who Might Like the Bear Elite Hybrid Mattress

  • Hot sleepers as all the layers of foam contain a cooling feature
  • Athletes as it was built specifically for those who lead an active life
  • Back sleepers due to the pressure relief and support

Who Might Not Like the Bear Elite Hybrid Mattress

  • Heavyweight stomach sleepers as it might not be firm enough
  • Seniors due to the low-performing edge support
  • Budget shoppers as it is a bit more expensive mattress

What Users Say

On the Bear website, this mattress scored a 4.4 out of 5 stars, from 266 reviews. Praise is given to this mattress for the pressure relief it delivers to users and higher firmness level. There were some complaints about the construction due to sagging and mounds forming in the mattress.

Created by Saatva, the Loom & Leaf is a foam mattress that comes in Relaxed Firm and Firm options. It’s constructed with a soft, breathable cotton cover, two layers of memory foam in the comfort layer (for both firmness options), and a support foam core.

Both sides of this mattress will provide a cradling feel, but the option to flip the mattress for a firmness that suits your body type and sleep position is appealing. On the relaxed firm side, you’ll experience more contouring and pressure point alleviation, which may be better for side sleepers. Back sleepers, stomach sleepers, and combination sleepers will likely prefer the firm mattress side. The Loom & Leaf comes with a 15-year warranty, a 120-night sleep trial, and ships free in the contiguous U.S.

What Our Testers Say:

“The Loom & Leaf feels like a traditional memory foam mattress: it conforms closely to your body and cushions pressure points (especially in the Relaxed Firm model). “

Who Might Like the Loom & Leaf by Saatva Mattress

  • Back sleepers of all body types—lightweight (< 130 lbs), average-weight (130–230 lbs) or heavyweight (> 230 lbs)
  • Side sleepers over 130 lbs
  • Stomach sleepers under 230 lbs
  • Those looking for a lower cost Tempur-Pedic alternative

Who Might Not Like the Loom & Leaf by Saatva Mattress

  • eople looking for easy mobility or a lot of bounce
  • Lightweight side sleepers
  • Heavyweight stomach sleepers

Mattress Buying Guide for Scoliosis

This buying guide covers important information about how mattress types and qualities impact the spine, the best types of mattresses for scoliosis, advice on sleeping positions, buying considerations, and more.

How Mattresses Impact the Spine

Whether you suffer from chronic pain or have been diagnosed with scoliosis, selecting a mattress that ensures your spine is supported and aligned is essential to alleviating pain and maintaining the health of your back.

The spine has a natural ‘S’-shaped curvature, and certain sleeping positions, mattress firmness levels, and other mattress characteristics will either encourage this natural curvature or throw the spine out of alignment. When the spine is out of alignment throughout the majority of the night, more aches and pain may occur upon waking.

For patients with scoliosis, a sufficient night’s rest is essential to maintaining a good quality of life. The ideal mattress for your back should promote sleep quality, sleep comfort, and spinal alignment to an equal extent. Consult with your doctor as they may have specific, customized recommendations about the ideal mattress style, firmness, or brand for your condition.

Types of Mattress Best For Scoliosis

There’s no one-size-fits-all mattress for scoliosis, just as there’s no single path of treatment for the condition. Key considerations include support, firmness level, pressure point relief, motion isolation, and off-gassing, to name a few.

However, for individuals with scoliosis, mattress type is perhaps the most impactful quality to consider because it greatly influences the aforementioned characteristics. Here’s an overview of the pros and cons of the most common types of mattresses on the market for scoliosis:

Innerspring Mattresses

Innerspring beds are the most traditional style and feature a coil support core with a thin layer of foam on top. These models are affordable, but they don’t have thick comfort layers for conforming and pressure relief. They also tend to lack edge support and sag over time. For some of our favorites, check out the best innerspring mattresses.

All-Foam Mattresses

All-foam beds can provide a nice balance of support and pressure point relief depending on their firmness levels. These mattresses are made with dense foam at the base layer and feature transitional layers and one or more layers of comfort foam. They hug the body more than innerspring mattresses, but they can sleep hot. Medium-firm mattresses with conforming comfort layers are typically best for sleepers with scoliosis, as they keep the spine in alignment by providing an even sleeping surface without sacrificing comfort. Interested? Take a look at our best memory foam beds.

Latex Mattresses

Latex mattresses have a dense foam or latex base and latex foams in the comfort layers. While among the more expensive styles, latex mattresses are more responsive than memory foam, sleep cooler than all-foam beds, and usually have organic and natural materials. They’re also more durable and tend to have better edge support. If latex sounds like the right choice for you, see our best latex mattresses.

Hybrid Mattresses

Hybrid mattresses combine qualities of innerspring and all-foam beds and are typically designed with a pocketed coil support core and topped with layers of memory foam or polyfoam for pressure relief. These are a nice choice for scoliosis patients as there is a wide variety of styles available on the market with regard to firmness level, price point, materials, and special features, like cooling gel-infused top layers. If you want to learn more head over to our best hybrid mattresses page.

Understanding Scoliosis

Scoliosis, by definition, is a lateral (sideways) spinal curvature and typically develops during puberty. In many cases, the deformity can worsen as adolescents get older. The condition can be mild and, in some cases, require no treatment. In other cases, scoliosis can be disabling. Chiropractic care, surgery, and back braces, and other corrective equipment are some of the treatment methods for this condition.

As Vivian Eisenstadt, our expert reviewer stated, “There are 2 kinds of scoliosis – structural and functional…Structural you are born with and develop and is usually moderate to severe. Functional scoliosis can develop from poor posture and habits. That type of scoliosis can be alleviated with proper sitting and standing posture.” When possible, you should always visit a medical professional to get a professional diagnosis on the specifics of your condition.

Some patients don’t know they have scoliosis until it’s more developed, but others suffer symptoms almost immediately. Symptoms can include but aren’t limited to the following:

  • Difficulty maintaining proper posture
  • Limited range of motion in the neck, shoulder, and hips
  • Low back pain
  • Inflammation in the low back
  • One hip sitting higher than the other
  • Protruding shoulder blades
  • Uneven shoulders

It’s recommended that you immediately seek medical attention if you notice signs in your own back or your child’s. The cause of scoliosis is currently unknown. However, doctors tracking the condition note that it may be genetic as it appears to run in families. The complications of worsening scoliosis include back problems, difficulty sitting, standing, and sleeping, self-esteem and self-confidence issues from changes to an individual’s appearance, and lung and heart damage.

Sleeping Positions and Scoliosis

Like all other sleepers, individuals suffering from scoliosis have the option to sleep on their side, back, stomach, or a combination of the three. Back sleeping is by far the most recommended sleeping position for spinal and general health by doctors, chiropractors, and orthopedists. Here’s an overview of the various sleeping positions and how they impact scoliosis:

  • Back sleepers may experience the most benefits, as this position makes it easy to keep your spine in alignment. It can also help prevent acid reflux and reduce neck pain, and it prevents lateral pressure on the spine for scoliosis sufferers. Back sleepers with scoliosis should choose a firmer mattress to support their neck and hips. Something like what we have on out best mattresses for back sleepers page, perhaps.
  • Side sleepers tend to curl up on one side of the body. You should discuss this sleeping position with your doctor if you have scoliosis. Side sleeping increases pressure points in the hips and shoulders on one side of the body, and for individuals with severe scoliosis, it may increase pain. For more, check out our best mattresses for side sleepers.
  • Stomach sleepers will find that this position is not ideal for scoliosis. Neck pain, low back pain, and hip pain are common for stomach sleepers. Stomach sleepers turn their heads and may contort their legs or arms to stay comfortable in this position, and sagging in the hip area can worsen lumbar issues. Want a deeper dive? Head over to our best mattresses for stomach sleepers article.
  • Combination sleepers rotate positions at night. We recommend discussing combination sleeping with your doctor to determine if it’s appropriate for your spine. This position can result in fewer aches and pains in the morning due to decreased stiffness from more activity throughout the night, but if you’re switching between unfavorable positions, like side sleeping and stomach sleeping, it could make matters worse. Check out our best mattresses for combination sleepers for more information.

FAQs on Best Mattress for Scoliosis

Is a firm mattress better for scoliosis?

As with most things, it will depend on some of your other characteristics and sleep habits. Generally, a medium-firm mattress is a safe bet if you suffer from scoliosis, as the down-the-middle levels of comfort and support will provide just that: plenty of comfort and plenty of support. However, if you are a stomach sleeper or back sleeper, something from our list of best firm mattresses may be better suited for you. We often recommend firm mattresses for these sleeping positions because the extra support helps keep your hips from sinking too far and potentially throwing off your spinal alignment. For more info, check out our mattress firmness guide.

What is the best pillow for scoliosis?

As is the case with mattress firmness, this is largely dependent on sleeping position. The best pillows for stomach sleepers are flat like a pancake, because something that is too high will cause you to crank your neck when you lie your head down. The best pillows for back sleepers are a bit thicker, and the best pillows for side sleepers are the plumpest yet. The reasoning behind all of these is primarily proper neck and spine alignment.

Can a bad mattress cause scoliosis?

The short answer is no, a mattress cannot be the sole cause of structural scoliosis. It can, however, lead to more significant pain associated with scoliosis. Finding a mattress with great spinal support is imperative if you suffer from scoliosis and want to get a restful night’s sleep. If you’d like to learn more about how a mattress can worsen pain, check out our best mattresses for back pain and best orthopedic mattresses articles.

How should you sleep if you have scoliosis?

If you have scoliosis, we generally recommend that you sleep on your back. This position does the best job of keeping your spine properly aligned. You might even consider placing a thin pillow between your lower back and the mattress to ensure better alignment. For more information, check out our article on sleeping comfortably while managing your scoliosis.

Final Thoughts

Whether you suffer from scoliosis or you’re looking for a new mattress for a loved one with the condition, remember that there’s no “perfect” mattress for this condition. Discuss the options with your doctor or care provider, and review sleep hygiene prior to purchasing a new mattress. Small changes to a sleep routine, like changing your sleeping position, can greatly improve sleep before the search for a new mattress has even begun. Review our list of the top picks for scoliosis for 2024, and see if there’s a bed within your budget that will help alleviate pain and support your spine’s health.
