Nolah Signature Mattress Review

Materials: Foam

Firmness: 4/10 or 7/10

Trial Period: 120 nights

Price Range: $1,099-$1,799

Nerd Score: 3.7/5

The Mattress Nerd’s Take: The Nolah Signature is a flippable mattress with a cradling, foam feel that sleeps cooler than a traditional memory foam bed. On the soft side, side sleepers will feel hugged. Stomach and back sleepers are more likely to find the support and weight distribution they need on the firm side.

How Does the Nolah Signature Mattress Feel?

Firmness

The Nolah Signature is flippable, so you can choose between the medium-soft side and the medium-firm side. On our firmness scale of 1 to 10, wherein 10 is an ultra-firm mattress, the medium-soft side measures a 5.5/10 and the medium-firm side measures 7 out of 10.

The firm side of the mattress is noticeably firmer and gives the sensation that you’re sleeping “on” the mattress rather than “in” it, making it better for stomach and back sleepers. The soft side has a plush feel that allows you to sink in for generous pressure relief: you’ll experience deep sinkage and body contouring, and the foams have a slow response to pressure that can make it a bit challenging to change positions. The soft side especially shines for side sleepers, who will experience excellent pressure relief at the hips and shoulders. During our lab tests, we primarily focused on the soft side of the mattress, and any of our takes throughout this review will reflect that.

Unfortunately, the Nolah Signature is not supportive enough for most heavyweight sleepers. For more supportive options, see the best mattress for heavy people.

Temperature

For an all-foam bed with layers that conform closely to the body, the Nolah sleeps surprisingly cool. The AirFoam in the comfort layers on both sides resembles memory foam in feel but is designed to be much more cooling. While it’s unlikely to sleep as cool as a hybrid or innerspring mattress, it should help wick moisture and prevent some of the heat buildup that typically occurs on all-foam and memory foam mattresses. If you are looking for more cooling features, check out the best mattress for hot sleepers.

Support

In between the two comfort layers of AirFoam are layers of high-density and high-resilience foam, which are designed to provide support no matter which surface is facing up. This means that, on the soft side, you should still feel supported on your back or side, even though the top layer of foam conforms around your body.

However, if you enjoy a supportive feel, prioritize edge support or need a firm, supportive surface for your sleeping position (looking at you, stomach sleepers!), the firm side will work best. You’ll come into contact with the dense core layers much more quickly, which help evenly distribute the bodyweight and prevent excessive sinkage. Based on the materials in the bed, we anticipate that the Nolah Signature will last seven to 10 years.

Back Sleepers

On the soft side, you’ll experience nice pressure relief around the shoulders and hips, and the AirFoam will slowly fill in the gap around your lumbar spine. On the firm side, there’s just 1″ of AirFoam, so you’ll sink in lightly but will quickly feel the supportive polyfoam layer. Lightweight back sleepers may enjoy the soft side more, while average-weight sleepers may find the firmer side more comfortable, depending on the amount of sinkage they prefer. Heavyweight back sleepers will likely not feel enough support on this mattress and may want to check out our best mattress for back sleepers list.

Side Sleepers

The Nolah Signature really shines for lightweight, average-weight and heavyweight side sleepers. On the soft side, you’ll experience excellent pressure relief at the shoulders and hips as the 2.5” of AirFoam sink to hug these areas of the body. The soft side’s comfort layer keeps your spine in alignment. Most side sleepers will find the firm side too firm and may experience tension at the shoulder joint in this position. See our picks for the best side sleeper mattress for other options.

Stomach Sleepers

We recommend that lightweight and average-weight stomach sleepers go with the firmer side of the Nolah, as the soft side will likely allow the hips to sink too deeply into the mattress throughout the night. The firm side will gently take pressure off of the neck, hips and shoulders while providing the firm support needed to prevent low back pain. Heavyweight stomach sleepers likely won’t find enough spinal support on the Nolah Signature 12”. For mattresses that protect the hips and provide the right amount of support, see the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.

Combination Sleepers

Combination sleepers who don’t prioritize responsiveness and bounce may enjoy the Nolah. It has no coils, latex or notably responsive foams in its construction. So, if you’re searching for a bed that’s easy to change positions on, you may want to keep looking.

If you’re a lightweight, average-weight or heavyweight combination sleeper who spends the majority of the night on your side and don’t mind the lack of bounce, we think you’ll love it. However, the best mattress for combination sleepers may be a latex mattress that facilitates movement and position changes.

NERD RATING: Will this bed work for you?

Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): 4 3 5
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  2 2 4

Does It Fit Your Lifestyle?

Hot Sleepers

Hot sleepers and all-foam beds typically don’t pair well together, as foam mattresses tend to trap more heat than innerspring and hybrid alternatives. However, the Nolah Signature has a cooling organic cotton cover, and the AirFoam in the top layer on each side is designed to sleep cooler than traditional memory foam. It contains no heat-sensitive chemicals and dissipates heat much faster than memory foam. That said, we did not notice it being cool to the touch when we had it in our lab. The Nolah Signature will likely sleep temperature neutral, not cool, so if you sleep exceptionally hot, it may not be cooling enough for you.

Those Looking for Durability

While researching a new mattress, durability is often a top consideration. Memory foam beds tend to feel comfortable at first but may lose support and thickness faster than other mattress styles. According to Nolah, its AirFoam loses only 0.03” thickness over time on average, compared with 0.09” in high-end memory foam and 0.78” in conventional memory foam. If you love the viscous, sinking feel of memory foam but also prioritize durability, the Nolah’s resistance to sagging and longer lifespan could be a great choice for your lifestyle.

Another thing we tested The Nolah for was motion transfer, or, how well it isolates the motion of your partner. Though we noticed some slight disturbance when changing positions, it certainly wouldn’t be enough to wake someone up. For that reason, The Nolah may be a great mattress for couples, with memory foam that absorbs motion transfer between partners and durable support across the entire surface.

People Who Need Pressure Relief

The cooling Nolah AirFoam is built to mimic the best qualities of memory foam, meaning that it has a slow response to pressure and a deep contouring hug. It should provide an immense amount of pressure relief at sensitive spots throughout the body, like the shoulders, hips, and lower back. That’s great for people who experience joint pain on a daily basis or who struggle with ailments like arthritis. We noticed solid pressure relief when we tested the mattress, so light and average-weight sleepers should be more than satisfied in this department.

For those looking to reduce their pain, check out our picks for the best mattress for back pain or best mattress for arthritis.

nolah signature mattress construction

Construction: What’s Under the Surface?

The Nolah Signature is a flippable mattress with comfort layers of Nolah AirFoam, a proprietary polyfoam designed to sleep cooler than traditional memory foam. The bed’s four-layer construction provides excellent pressure relief, especially on the soft side. Couples will enjoy the bed’s limited motion transfer for fewer sleep disturbances. For other top mattresses, see the best memory foam mattresses.

Layer #1: Organic Cotton Cover: The Nolah Signature features a soft, breathable organic cotton cover. It’s removable so that you can clean it after spills, but we wouldn’t be mattress experts if we didn’t recommend a quality mattress protector.

Layer #2: AirFoam Comfort Layer: The bed features a comfort layer of AirFoam on each side. On the soft side, there’s 2.5” of this proprietary high-resilience polyfoam, and on the firmer side, there’s 1” of the same material. The thicker layer on the soft side allows for deeper conforming and pressure relief, and the thin layer on the firm side provides pressure relief with a less plush feel.

Layer #3: High-Resilience Foam (Soft Side): Beneath the AirFoam comfort layer on the soft side is a 1.5” layer of high-resilience foam, which is a durable, latex-like foam. This prevents sleepers from sinking too deeply into the bed’s firm core on the soft side of the mattress.

Layer #4: High-Density Base: At the center of the Nolah is a 7” core of high-density foam. The foam is breathable and reinforces the comfort layers for longevity and durability.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

The Nolah Signature ships for free anywhere in the contiguous United States. Each mattress is handcrafted to order, which takes one to five days. Nolah ships via FedEx Ground, and most mattresses arrive four to eight business days after the order is placed. White glove delivery and shipping to Alaska, Hawaii and other U.S. territories is not available.

Your Nolah Signature will ship rolled and compressed as a bed-in-a-box, so when it arrives, you’ll need to take it out of the shipping box and position it where you want to sleep. After tearing away the protective plastic, allow your Nolah mattress to expand for up to 48 hours before sleeping on it. Unboxing the mattress took us just under two minutes, and it was quite easy for two people to handle. Many of the online mattress brands have similar shipping and unboxing procedures.

Warranty

The Nolah Signature 12” comes with a limited Lifetime warranty, so if your mattress is found to be defective, it will be repaired or replaced by Nolah Sleep as long as the damage falls under the warranty terms. During the first 15 years of ownership, Nolah Sleep will pay for the repair and shipping costs associated with the repair or replacement. After year 15, Nolah will repair the mattress at a handling cost to the owner or replace the mattress at a prorated price plus a $75 shipping fee.

The prorated cost of a mattress replacement during years 15-25 are 50% of the original purchase price. The cost to replace a mattress after year 25 is 60% of the original purchase price.

Trial Period & Returns

Nolah Sleep offers a 120-night trial to allow you to try the Nolah Signature at home before committing to it. The sleep trial period includes a 30-night break-in period, but you can return the mattress any time after the 30th night. If you decide not to keep the mattress, Nolah Sleep will send a driver to pick up the bed, and returns are completely free. You’ll receive a full refund for the Nolah Signature 12” after the return.

Nolah Mattress FAQs

Are there any Common Complaints About the Nolah Mattress?

To combat this, allow your mattress to immediately air out after removing the plastic. Do this in a well-ventilated room until the smell dissipates.

Where Can I Find a Discount Code for the Nolah Mattress?

Nolah offers many coupon codes and discounts throughout the year, especially during the holidays. The best place to find exclusive Nolah deals on non-holidays is through our mattress deals page. You can keep track of current seasonal and exclusive mattress deals for Nolah beds here.

Comparing the Nolah Mattresses

Nolah Signature vs. Nolah Original

The Nolah Original mattress is a 10” foam mattress with a viscose cover, two polyfoam comfort layers and a high-density polyfoam support core. It has a medium firmness level (6 out of 10) that falls between what’s offered on the Nolah Signature’s two sides (4/10 and 7/10). The AirFoam foam layers in both provide excellent pressure relief, and they have similar performance with regard to motion isolation and noise. The biggest difference is that the Signature is flippable, and it’s also more expensive. Both work well for lightweight and average-weight sleepers.

Nolah Signature vs. Nolah Evolution

The Nolah Evolution is Nolah Sleep’s first hybrid mattress, and it combines the company’s signature AirFoam comfort foam with coils to create a medium-soft, conforming mattress with bounce. Its firmness scale setting makes it a good choice for side sleepers and those struggling with shoulder or hip pain. Compared to the Signature, the Evolution has a blended feel as opposed to a strictly viscous, conforming one. We recommend the Evolution for hot sleepers who like a deep conforming bed, people with pain who want a little more bounce, and lightweight or average-weight sleepers.

Nolah Evolution Hybrid Mattress

The Nolah Evolution 15" mattress is a robust hybrid bed that's a bit softer than the average mattress: great for back sleepers and side sleepers. The individually wrapped coils include zoned support, which helps promote adequate spinal alignment.

Nolah Signature vs. Nectar

The Nectar is a popular bed-in-a-box that’s made with three layers of memory foam for consistent pressure relief. It has a low cost compared to competing models, making it a high-value option. Its firmness level (6/10) falls between the Signature’s two levels, and it’s well-suited for average-weight sleepers in all sleeping positions.

Like the Signature, the Nectar doesn’t absorb as much body heat as other all-foam beds, and it has minimal motion and noise for couples. We recommend the Signature for people who want two options in one mattress, and we recommend the Nectar for people who want a memory foam feel for less money, as the Nectar costs roughly $500 less in every size.

Nectar Mattress

The Nectar is a value memory foam mattress that excels at providing pressure relief and minimizing motion transfer. The medium-firm feel is ideal for cradling pressure points. Plus, it comes with a yearlong trial period and Lifetime warranty.

Nolah Signature vs. Layla

The Layla is another flippable all-foam mattress with a softer, pressure-relieving side and a firmer, more supportive side. The firmness levels of each side are nearly identical to the Signature (4/10 and 7/10), but it’s two inches thinner. Both beds have features that fight heat retention: Layla Sleep infuses its memory foams with copper, while the Signature contains a memory foam alternative that sleeps cooler. The Nolah Signature has a barely more responsive sleeping surface, making it a better choice for combination sleepers, and it may sleep slightly cooler since it doesn’t contain memory foam at all.

If you love the feel of memory foam and are set on it, we recommend the Layla, which also happens to be less costly. We recommend the Signature if you like memory foam and pressure relief but want a bed that sleeps temperature neutral and has a little more responsiveness.

Nolah Signature vs. Puffy Lux

The Puffy Lux is an all-foam mattress with a medium firmness setting (5/10) that conforms closely to reduce pressure points. Like the Signature, it distills motion exceptionally well and sleeps quietly, but it contains authentic memory foam rather than a proprietary polyfoam material. It’s also 12” tall like the Signature, but it isn’t flippable. Its firmness setting and deep cradle make it ideal for lightweight individuals and side sleepers. However, back, stomach and most average-weight individuals will find it too soft.

The Puffy Lux has been discontinued, but it was one of Puffy's luxury all-foam mattress models. Instead, check out the Puffy Lux Hybrid, which pairs the same cloud-like comfort foam with a supportive, breathable coil base layer.

Pros/Cons

  • Low motion transfer and noise
  • Two-sided construction offers options for sleepers
  • Sleeps cooler than average memory foam
  • Offers better durability than memory foam

Cons

  • Poor edge support
  • Not supportive enough for plus-size sleepers
  • Off-gassing odor can last up to two weeks
  • Poor spinal alignment for heavier sleepers

What’s the Bottom Line?

There’s a lot that we love about the Nolah Signature 12”. The softer side is ideal for lightweight and average-weight side sleepers who need pressure relief at the hips and shoulders, while the firm side is suitable for most lightweight and average-weight back and stomach sleepers. It’s quiet and still, so couples aren’t likely to notice their partner moving during the night. It also sleeps a bit cooler than memory foam, making it a good choice for people who love the pressure relief of memory foam but struggle with sleeping hot on it. However, it has little bounce, so it’s not a good option for combination sleepers, and it’s more expensive than competing memory foam and memory foam alternative mattresses, like the Puffy Lux and the Layla.
