Who Should Choose the Saatva Mattress?

  • Hot sleepers—The Saatva is made of breathable, organic materials and several layers of ventilated pocketed coils. As a result, this bed is as cool as it gets, making it a top choice for hot sleepers. On the other hand, the Loom & Leaf’s foam design is less breathable and absorbs more body heat.
  • Combination sleepers—The Saatva’s coils aren’t just great for airflow, they also offer a bouncy and lifted feel, which is ideal for combination sleepers—sleepers who like to move around and change positions throughout the night.
  • Seniors—Lastly, seniors needing more support at the edge of their mattress will prefer the Saatva. This is because the Saatva’s super sturdy construction makes it easy to sit or lie at the bed’s perimeter without it warping.

Who Should Choose the Loom & Leaf Mattress?

  • Sleepers needing pressure relief—Memory foam beds are known for their cushioning and doughy feel. So, if you’re looking for a bed that’ll cradle your body, the Loom & Leaf is a great way to get pressure relief without compromising too much on firmness.
  • Couples—Unfortunately, sharing a bed can mean your partner’s restless night is your restless night too. For light sleepers with partners who toss and turn, foam mattresses, like the Loom & Leaf, are great at absorbing and muffling unwanted disturbances.
  • Side Sleepers—Mattresses that offer great pressure relief are often a match made in heaven for side sleepers. This is because side sleepers often get aches and pains from mattresses that put too much pressure on their hips and shoulders. The good news, however, is that the Loom & Leaf mattress’s supportive foam design reduces any hard points between the bed and your body.

Saatva vs. Loom & Leaf: Top Similarities

  • Back Sleepers—The Saatva and Loom & Leaf mattresses have different constructions, but they’re both friendly to back sleepers. For average-weight and lightweight sleepers, either mattress at its standard firmness should be ideal, while some heavier back sleepers may prefer the more firm Saatva and Loom & Leaf options.
  • Durability—The Saatva’s hybrid design and outstanding edge support make it one of the most durable and lasting mattresses on the market. And, while it’s a little more durable than the all-foam Loom & Leaf, you can expect both beds to last between eight and 10 years.
  • Policies—Regardless of which mattress you decide, you’ll be getting the same generous Saatva policies either way. This means a long trial and return period, plus a Lifetime warranty.

Saatva vs. Loom & Leaf: Top Differences

  • Temperature Control—One downside of foam mattresses is that they’re known for absorbing and holding onto body heat. If you’re a hot sleeper already, the all-foam Loom & Leaf may leave you feeling overheating compared to the original Saava mattress.
  • Price—Ultimately, the Saatva and Loom & Leaf mattresses have similar performance in many ways, but the Loom & Leaf is more costly—especially for a foam mattress. In fact, for a Queen mattress, the Saatva is $500 cheaper than the Loom & Leaf bed.
  • Motion Isolation—The Saatva mattress has several layers of lifting coils. While this is great for combination sleepers and those who like some bounce, the Loom & Leaf’s denser foam is much better at absorbing any movement.

Saatva vs. Loom & Leaf: Firmness & Feel Differences

Now that we’ve hit the basics of these beds, let’s talk more about how they actually feel:

What’s the Firmness Of the Saatva & Loom & Leaf Mattresses?

Mattresses are rated on a firmness scale that ranges from 1–10, with 1/10 being super plush and 10/10 being extra firm. Typically, The best mattresses for side sleepers are softer, and back and stomach sleepers need a medium-firm or firm mattress. Both of the beds in this mattress comparison are medium-firm, and most reviewers agree that they’re closer to medium than firm.

With this in mind, the Loom & Leaf comes in two firmness levels: a 6/10 and an 8/10. The Saatva offers several firmness levels too: a 3/10, 6.5/10, and an 8/10.

What Do the Saatva & Loom & Leaf Mattresses Feel Like?

Materials and construction also affect how a mattress feels. Even though these are both medium-firm models, the Loom & Leaf feels softer once it’s warmed up. Also, the Saatva is the better choice for heavier sleepers, since coils support body weight better than foam.

What’s It Like to Sleep On the Saatva & Loom & Leaf Mattresses?

Regardless of your weight and sleeping position, both the original Saatva and the Loom & Leaf mattresses will perform similarly. That said, for sleepers wanting a wider range of firmness options, the Saatva mattress will be the best fit. On the other hand, side sleepers wanting more pressure relief will prefer the Loom & Leaf mattress.

That said, depending on your mattress feel preference, sleepers wanting more lift will prefer the Saatva, while sleepers wanting more cushion will want the Loom & Leaf.

Heavyweight Sleepers (> 230 lbs)

Like with average-weight sleepers, heavyweight stomach sleepers, back sleepers, and side sleepers will get similar performance from both the Saatva and Loom & Leaf. However, for heavier stomach sleepers wanting to up the firmness more, the Saatva’s most firm option (at an 8/10 on our firmness scale) will be their best.

Lightweight Sleepers (< 130 lbs)

Last, but not least, for lightweight sleepers, both the Saatva and Loom & Leaf are ideal for back sleepers and stomach sleepers; however, both mattresses are also too firm for lightweight side sleepers. For lightweight sleepers wanting to maximize their softness, the softest option for the Loom & Leaf foam mattress is best.

Differences In Mattress Construction

Although the Saatva and Loom & Leaf Mattress perform similarly, they have very different constructions. Firstly, the hybrid Saatva mattress features two layers of coils, while the Loom & Leaf is an all-foam mattress. Also, the Saatva measures in at 11.5”–14.5” tall, depending on your choice of firmness, while the Loom & Leaf is a foot tall.

Cover

For the Saatva and Loom & Leaf mattresses, each is wrapped in an organic cotton cover with an antimicrobial natural thistle treatment, and the edges of the Saatva are encased in high density foam for enhanced edge support.

Comfort Layers

Next, below the Saatva’s cover is 3” of soft polyfoam quilted right into the mattress cover. This layer feels really plush for the average sleeper, but heavier sleepers will probably sink right through to the coils below. Also, the Saatva’s lumbar support system sits between the two coil layers but only in the center third of the mattress. This wire and foam layer adds extra support for your lower back.

For the Loom & Leaf, the top layer is cooling gel memory foam, which balances out the innate heat retention of visco elastic foam.  Next up is a slightly thicker memory foam layer. Side sleepers will get lots of pressure relief from these two layers, which is just what they need.

Support Layers

Finally, the base layer of the Saatva is a dual coil system. The top layer of coils are individually wrapped, so they reduce motion transfer and target pressure points with extra pressure relief. The second layer of coils are made of sturdy steel. They contribute to this mattress’s high rating for durability and also noticeably improve airflow through the core of the mattress.

And, at the bottom of the Loom & Leaf mattress, the softness of the memory foam is tempered by a support foam base layer. This foam is designed to prevent excess sinkage and bump the mattress into a relaxed firm feel.

Saatva vs. Loom & Leaf Mattress Performance Ratings & Differences

Temperature

It’s absolutely no fun to wake up hot and drenched in sweat, which is why mattress temperature is important. Innerspring mattresses are the coolest, while memory foam mattresses tend to be the warmest. So, it’s no surprise that the Saatva mattress—with two coil layers—sleeps cooler than the all-foam Loom & Leaf. If you are looking for a cooling mattress, check out the best mattress for hot sleepers.

Motion Transfer

If you’re a light sleeper, or plan on sharing your next mattress with one, motion transfer is worth looking out for. Essentially, the better motion isolation a mattress has, the better it muffles unwanted movement.

That said, neither the Loom & Leaf nor the Saatva Classic blew us away with their motion isolation performance, but the Saatva did a decidedly better job. With that in mind, we favor the Saatva for couples, light sleepers, or anyone who co-sleeps.

For more, see our top picks for the best mattresses for couples.

Edge Support

Edge support is important for seniors and anyone who regularly sits or sleeps near the sides of the bed. The Saatva has a dense foam encasement specifically designed to improve edge support, but the Loom & Leaf does not. Predictably, the Saatva provides much better edge support than the Loom & Leaf.

Pressure Relief

Pressure relief is especially important for side sleepers and those with heavier body types, since both types of sleepers sink further into the mattress. We measure pressure relief using a pressure map that shows warm colors over areas of high pressure and cool coolers around areas of low pressure.

In this category, the Loom & Leaf is more pressure-relieving, so we recommend it to side sleepers, but it’s too soft for many heavyweight sleepers to get adequate support.

Pain Relief

If you frequently wake up with back pain, your bed might be lacking spinal support. Your spine naturally curves into an “S” shape, and when a mattress doesn’t provide enough pressure relief or weight distribution for your body type and sleeping position, you lose that healthy neutral spinal alignment. Fortunately, both of these mattresses knocked it out of the park with their spinal alignment scores.

Durability

Mattress durability is evaluated with tests that simulate years of use, as well as analysis of mattress materials. Latex and air beds last the longests, while innerspring beds deteriorate the quickest. Memory foam and hybrid mattresses typically last up to seven years and both of these mattresses have lifetime warranties, so you’re set forever.

Our Final Take

If you need more pressure relief, then the Loom & Leaf is probably your best bet. However, if you want a more responsive and cooler bed, the classic Saatva is ideal. Lastly, while both beds have similar performances, sleepers wanting more durability and edge support will prefer the Saatva.

Saatva & Loom & Leaf FAQs

How Much Weight Can the Saatva Support?

The original Saatva is designed for sleepers who weigh up to 300 lbs. For heavyweight sleepers, especially stomach sleepers, we recommend trying the more firm option of the Saatva. That said, for sleepers over 300 lbs, the Saatva HD mattress will offer better support, however.

Is the Saatva Mattress Good for Back Pain?

If you suffer from back pain, either the Loom & Leaf or original Saatva work great, thanks to their supportive foam and lumbar support. Also, if you’re a heavier back sleeper over 230 lbs, both Saatva beds offer additional levels of firmness to choose from.

Do You Need a Foundation For Loom & Leaf Mattress?

For the Loom & Leaf mattress, Saatva recommends putting it on either a solid surface, like a platform or floor. If you do want to put your Loom & Leaf on a bed frame, be sure that the slats are not more than four inches apart to avoid sagging.
