Best Innerspring Mattress

When you think of a “traditional” mattress, you probably picture an innerspring. Innerspring mattresses have been around for a long time (since 1871 to be exact) and the style is still widely manufactured and sold today. However, even though not all of these are true innerspring mattresses because most modern mattresses include at least some foam, we tested them all to ensure that they still maintain that classic innerspring feel. These mattresses are known for their high levels of support, ability to maintain an even surface, responsiveness, and relief for pressure points.

Many first-time innerspring mattress buyers are initially drawn to this style for its price point, which tends to be relatively low. Many mattress brands have made their version of an innerspring more desirable by adding a top layer of foam, latex, cotton, or other material. This can raise the price point a bit, but can also ensure your mattress is more durable and comfortable.

Chosen by Experts and Advocates

Having tested dozens of innerspring mattresses, our team at Mattress Nerd understands their benefits and drawbacks. We’ve selected the ten mattresses on this list because they possess the good qualities that innersprings tend to provide, such as responsiveness and temperature regulation, while also accounting for issues such as noisiness and lack of durability.

Pros of the WinkBed
Responsive
Great edge support
Cooling
Cons of the WinkBed
Not the best motion isolation

The WinkBed is an innerspring mattress that comes in three firmness options, making it a good option for most sleepers, regardless of their sleeping position, body type, or weight. It features a support core of pocketed coils that are encased in foam, helping the mattress have airflow and strong edge support. On top of this core is a comfort system with polyfoam, gel polyfoam, and micro coil layers. The WinkBed also has a lumbar pad for added pressure relief in the low back.

Heavyweight sleepers have the option of purchasing the WinkBed Plus, which is a specialized firm hybrid designed to accommodate larger and taller sleepers. The comfort layer in this model includes zoned latex for targeted support where heavyweight sleepers need it most. In general, WinkBed’s models are responsive yet body-conforming, meaning they can alleviate aches and pains while providing the bounce that some sleepers prefer. It’s also an excellent choice for couples, as it isolates motion relatively well for an innerspring.

What our testers say: “We thought the WinkBed had really great edge support, meaning that the mattress doesn’t dip or slouch when you are sitting or sleeping near the edge. The coils around the edge of the mattress are designed to be even more supportive than the rest of the coils, creating an extra edge support system around the perimeter of the mattress.” – Loren, Editor & Mattress Tester

Who Might Like the WinkBed Mattress

  • Combination sleepers as the mattress can support you in multiple sleeping positions
  • Hot sleepers as the multiple breathable layers will help the mattress to not hold onto your body heat
  • Those with back pain with its firmness

Who Might Not Like the WinkBed Mattress

  • Light sleepers concerned about motion transfer as it is pretty average at motion isolation
  • Budget shoppers due to its higher price tag

Other User Reviews

On the WinkBeds site, the WinkBed earns a 4.8 out of 5 stars. Most negative reviews focus on problems with delivery and removal. But overall, people seem satisfied and consider the bed supportive and sturdy.

Pros of the Helix Mignight Luxe
Responsive
Great edge support
Good for those with back pain
Cons of the Helix Midnight Luxe
Not best for heavyweight sleepers

The Helix Midnight Luxe, made by Helix Sleep, is a hybrid innerspring mattress that features pocketed coils and quilted pillow top. This mattress is the luxe version of the ever-popular Helix Midnight, meaning it has upgraded features including; zoned lumbar support, quilted pillow top, breathable Tencel cover, and increased height.

The upgraded features make this pocketed coil mattress a great option for almost all sleepers. If you have pain concerns, the zoned support will enhance the way the mattress contours to your body, since not all parts of your body will feel the same on a mattress.

If you are a hot sleeper, you can be assured that the mattress’s pillowtop and cooling cover will regulate your body temperature throughout the night. Hybrid mattresses are naturally more cooling than all-foam since they have coils at the base, which all air to flow through. As such, it’s one of our top picks for the best innerspring mattress for hot sleepers.

What our testers say: “The Midnight Luxe has a cushioning feel, but the foam doesn’t contour to every inch of your frame. You sink into the foam a little, but not too far. The coils keep you lifted and add bounce to the feel of the mattress.” – Rachael, Editor & Mattress Tester

Who Might Like the Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress

  • Combination sleepers as the mattress can support you in multiple sleeping positions
  • Hot sleepers as the multiple breathable layers will help the mattress to not hold onto your body heat
  • Those with back pain with its firmness

Who Might Not Like the Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress

  • Heavyweight stomach sleepers because it won’t provide the appropriate support or comfort
  • Light sleepers concerned about motion transfer as it is pretty average at motion isolation
  • Budget shoppers due to its higher price tag

Other User Reviews

On the Helix site, this mattress received a 4.5 out of 5 star review, out of over 5,000 reviews. Praise is given to the comfort and satisfaction levels with this purchase, as well as the support and pressure relief for sleepers. However, there are complaints of users waking up sore due to the softness of mattress.

Pros of the Saatva Mattress
Great edge support
Several firmness options
Sleeps cool
Cons of the Saatva Mattress
Expensive

While it’s a “traditional mattress,” the Saatva contains a low-gauge Bonnell coil support core that’s topped with a plush comfort system and a euro-top cushioning layer, which together provide more added comfort than you’ll find in most innerspring options. Bonnell coils help keep the mattress relatively affordable, and they also keep it supportive. These coils can withstand high levels of compression without shifting. As such, the Saatva takes from the best of both worlds: it has the support, response, and durability of an innerspring mattress and the conforming and pressure relief of an all-foam or hybrid model.

The Saatva is customizable (both firmness and height), meaning that it can work well for almost any sleeper, regardless of body weight or sleeping style. Firmness options include Plush Soft (4), Luxury Firm (6), and Firm (7.5), and you can choose from 11.5- and 14.5-inch profiles.

Keep in mind that the Saatva’s responsiveness may make it unpleasant if you wake easily at the movements of a partner, as it doesn’t shine in the motion isolation department. If you are a strict side sleeper, then the Plush Soft is likely going to be a good fit for you. If you are a stomach sleeper, then you will want to opt for the Luxury Firm or Firm model as it will help with spinal alignment.

What our testers say: “The two layers of lumbar support make the Saatva Classic a great mattress for people with back pain. With three firmness options, it can accommodate almost every sleeping position and body type, too.” – Loren, Lead Mattress Tester

Who Might Like the Saatva Classic Mattress

  • Hot sleepers as it has temperature regulation technology and materials to keep you cool
  • People with back pain due to its firmness and ability to help align neck and spine

Who Might Not Like the Saatva Classic Mattress

  • Couples easily disturbed by movement because this mattress is not the best at motion isolation
  • Shoppers on a tight budget as this mattress is not the cheapest

Other User Reviews

On the Saatva website, the Saatva Classic mattress scored a 4.8 out of 5 stars from over 2,000 reviews. The reviews praise the customer support and comfort levels of the mattress. However, complaints callout sagging in the mattress after only a year and the need for early replacement.

Pros of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Mattress
Sleeps cool with base layer of coils
Great responsiveness
Great at isolation motion
Cons of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Mattress
Not the best edge support
Off-gassing smell
Not Soft Enough for Side Sleepers

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid contains a 2-inch top layer of gel-infused TitanFlex polyfoam and a 2-inch layer of gel-infused Energex polyfoam at the top. Six-inch pocketed coils and a 1-inch layer of high-density base polyfoam make up the remainder of the bed, creating a profile that’s altogether 11.5 inches thick.

The Signature comes in three firmness options (soft, medium, and firm), each of which offer a distinct feel. In all models, the Signature offers excellent airflow and temperature neutrality thanks to the pocketed coil layer. Keep in mind that the Signature lacks the traditional responsive feel of an innerspring mattress, which will be a drawback or a plus, depending on your preferences.

The 4” all-foam comfort system also helps the Signature isolate motion better than other innerspring and hybrids, making it a great choice for couples. With high-quality construction, a 120-night sleep trial, and a 10-year warranty, this is our pick for best value innerspring mattress.

What our Testers Say:

“Right off the bat, we love the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid mattress because it’s affordable and it comes in three firmness options. We tested the “medium” firmness level in our sleep lab and found that it worked well for back sleepers and heavier side sleepers, but not as well for stomach sleepers.” – Loren Bullock, Lead Mattress Tester

Who Might Like the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Mattress

  • Those who want the most bang for their buck
  • Combination sleepers
  • Hot sleepers
  • Back sleepers

Who Might Not Like the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Mattress

  • Memory foam mattress purists
  • Stomach sleepers with heavier body types
  • Side sleepers with sensitive joints

Other User Reviews

On the Brooklyn Bedding website, this mattress scored a 4.7 out of 5 stars, from over 10,000 reviews. The reviews speak highly of the comfort levels, claiming it to be a great mix between softness and support. There were complaints against the customer experience and support as no one has gotten back to them in a while or still haven’t received their mattress.

Cons of GhostBed Flex Mattress

The GhostBed Flex mattress uses a combination of bouncy gel memory foam and individually wrapped coils to be ultra-responsive. The responsiveness of this mattress makes it a great option for combination sleepers because it is easy to move around into different sleeping positions.

Additionally, the GhostBed Flex is known for its excellent cooling properties, which are in almost every layer of the mattress. The cover of the mattress is literally cool-to-the touch, and its gel-infused memory foam helps dissipate body heat. Because it includes coils, there is a maximization of airflow throughout the mattress.

With the purchase of this bed, GhostBed offers you a 101-night trial period and a 25-year warranty. Except for in Alaska and Hawaii, GhostBed ships for free within three to five business days.

What our Testers Say:

“The GhostBed Flex pairs effective cooling features with contouring memory foam and supportive coils. This combination is a good fit for average-weight side sleepers, back sleepers of all body types, hot sleepers, and couples. Stomach sleepers should opt for a firmer mattress, and budget shoppers will want to look elsewhere.” – Rachael, Editor & Mattress Tester

Pros of the DreamCloud Mattress
Sleeps cool
Good edge support
Good responsiveness
Cons of the DreamCloud Mattress
Not budget friendly
Difficult to set up
Not the best choice for side sleepers

The DreamCloud features five layers in is construction: three comfort layers, a transitional layer, a support core, and a polyfoam base. These layers contain 1-inch of polyfill, a half-inch of polyfoam, 1.5 inches of gel-infused memory foam, 2.5 inches of soft conventional foam, 8 inches of pocketed coils, and 1.5 inches of dense base polyfoam, respectively.

We recommend the DreamCloud for heavyweight sleepers or individuals with back pain or chronic pain for several reasons. Although the mattress contains several memory foam layers, sleepers will experience the feeling of sleeping on the bed rather than sinking into it. This is excellent quality for heavyweight sleepers, who require additional support.

It also works well for back sleepers, who need a firm surface for ideal spinal alignment, and those with chronic pain, for whom firm edges ease the task of getting in and out of bed.

What our Testers Say:

“The DreamCloud mattress brings a high-quality, hotel-like feel to the bed-in-a-box market. It performed well in all of our tests, and while it’s not a perfect fit for every sleeper, it’s a great option for a lot of people. Specifically, we recommend it to couples, back sleepers, stomach sleepers under 230 lbs, and hot sleepers.” – Becca Fair, Mattress Tester

Pros of the Layla Mattress
Budget friendly
Good pressure relief for back sleepers
Cons of the Layla Mattress
Sleeps hot
Not the best edge support
Slow response time

The Layla Hybrid comes with many bells and whistles: it’s flippable with two firmness options (soft and firm), offers great motion isolation for couples, and uses cooling technology in its construction. The cooling cover is activated when it comes in contact with your body heat and the coil center allows this heat to escape the mattress. So, no more night waking up sweaty.

Its flippable feature allows sleepers to choose their own comfort. Back sleepers should like either side depending on how firm they want their mattress. However, side sleepers should stick with the soft side for contouring, and stomach sleepers should stick with the firm side for additional support.

Lastly, the Layla Hybrid tested very well in our lab in terms of motion isolation. What this means is that you and your partner shouldn’t feel each other tossing and turning in the middle of the night.

What our Testers Say:

“Layla offers flexibility and a high-quality mattress for a relatively low price. Though the memory foam mattress might not work perfectly for larger people or those who sleep as hot as furnaces, it’ll be great for back sleepers and anyone who wants a flexible, modern mattress.” – Loren Bullock, Lead Mattress Tester

Pros of the Puffy Lux Hybrid Mattress
Sleeps cool
Good pressure relief
Cons of the Puffy Lux Hybrid Mattress
Not ideal for heavyweight sleepers

The Puffy Lux Hybrid is a mattress with an innerspring feel, and it’s known for being a solid choice for those looking for a bed-in-a-box. When unboxing, you may need the help of a friend, but overall we found it to be a great shipping experience overall. It took us only two minutes to unwrap the mattress, and there was only a slight off-gassing smell. Additionally, the mattress comes with free shipping in the contiguous U.S.

The Puffy Lux Hybrid features Contour-Adapt Coils in the support layer as well as two types of proprietary foam in the comfort layer. Both layers offer comfort but are also designed to dissipate heat and keep you sleeping cool during the night.

With its hybrid design, the Puffy Lux Hybrid boasts an excellent balance of comfort and support. This makes it a great match for back sleepers and side sleepers who need some nice pressure relief. The top foam layers should cradle your shoulder and hip, relieving any built-up pressure in those areas.

What our testers say: “It’s sometimes difficult to find cushioning mattresses that relieve pressure and allow for a cool sleep, but the Puffy Lux strikes a good balance for all but the absolute sweatiest sleepers.” – Rachael, Editor & Mattress Tester

Who Might Like the Puffy Lux Mattress

  • Side sleepers as the layers can cradle pressure points like the hips, shoulders, and even elbows
  • Combination sleepers as it can support multiple sleeping positions
  • Back Sleepers < 230 lbs because of the support offered in the hip and back areas
  • Those with arthritis due to the support and pressure relief

Who Might Not Like the Puffy Lux Mattress

  • Heavier Back Sleepers as it might not be firm enough
  • Stomach Sleepers due to lack of support as it was not made to support their hips
  • Budget-Restricted Shoppers as it is expensive

Pros of the Casper Hybird Mattress
Sleeps cool
Good at isolating motion
Good edge support
Cons of the Casper Hybird Mattress
Those who prefer firm mattress may not enjoy
Not supportive for those over 300 lbs.

The Casper Hybrid mattress adds a supportive coil layer to their already-popular Casper mattress. Casper uses zoned support to keep side sleepers aligned. Zoned support adds firmer support towards the center of your body and softer support around the head and feet to cushion these areas.

One of the great things about the Casper Hybrid is that it is a fantastic option for couples. The Casper Hybrid generally supports sleepers of every sleeping position, which is great if you and your partner have different preferences. It also minimizes motion transfer, which means that neither of you should feel each other tossing and turning at night.

Casper offers the industry-standard pairing of a sleep trial that’s 100 nights and a 10-year warranty. Most mattresses arrive in two to five business days.

What Our Testers Say:

The Casper Hybrid is an affordable hybrid mattress that’s excellent for people with body aches and pains. A layer of Zoned Support foam provides more give at lighter body parts and more support around the body’s heavier regions. The result is top-notch pressure relief and spine alignment.

Who Might Like the Casper Hybrid Mattress

  • Lightweight and average-weight people of all sleeping positions
  • Couples who share a bed
  • People with back pain
  • Hot sleepers

Who Might Not Like the Casper Hybrid Mattress

  • Plus-size people
  • Firm mattress fans
  • People who want a deep hugging feel

Other User Reviews

Pros of the Cocoon Chill Hybrid Mattress
Sleeps cool
Great for couples
Pressure-Relieving Memory Foam
Cons of the Cocoon Chill Hybrid Mattress
Not as responsive as other hybrids
Not for Heavyweight Stomach Sleepers
Not for People Who Like a Firm Feel

The Cocoon Chill Hybrid is a mattress that lives up to its name. With its proprietary Phase Change Material and airflow-promoting coils, the Cocoon Chill Hybrid stays cool all night long. If you sleep hot, the Cocoon Chill Hybrid should be on your shopping list.

This is great for couples who worry about sleeping hot during the night. The cool-to-the-touch mattress should ensure neither partner heats up during the night. What’s more the Cocoon Chill Hybrid scored high in our Motion Isolation tests. If you sleep with a partner, their movements shouldn’t transfer to your side of the mattress!

Also, with a thick layer of Perfect Fit Memory Foam right on top, the Cocoon Chill Hybrid offers some great contouring and pressure relief as well. The mix of coils and foam should also please all of you back sleepers out there.

What our testers say: “The Cocoon mattress is more supportive than your average bed. Its memory foam comfort layers are made from foam that’s slightly denser than normal, which helps to resist body impressions.” – Loren, Lead Mattress Tester

Who Might Like the Cocoon Chill Hybrid Mattress

  • People who sleep hot as the phase change material is designed to absorb heat from the body and move it away
  • Couples and those who co-sleep as it minimizes motion transfer
  • Back sleepers due to its pressure relief

Who Might Not Like the Cocoon Chill Hybrid Mattress

  • Heavyweight stomach sleepers as it doesn’t have the level of support needed by stomach sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds
  • People who toss and turn as it is not the most responsive
  • Lightweight side sleepers as it may be too firm for adequate pressure relief

Other User Reviews

On the Cocoon by Sealy website, this mattress scored a 4.7 out of 5 stars, from 8,263 reviews. Praise is given to the cooling technology and materials in this bed, providing customers with a cool night of sleep. There were some complaints that the materials broke down too early and the construction was not sufficient.

What is an Innerspring Mattress?

Innerspring mattresses sometimes referred to as coil mattresses or traditional mattresses, contain a supportive core of metal coils that sits beneath a comfort layer. The comfort layer is typically constructed from soft, responsive material such as memory foam, latex, or polyfoam.

Technically, the thickness of the comfort layer distinguishes an innerspring mattress from a hybrid mattress, which both have comfort layers. Mattresses with comfort layers 2” thick or less are considered innerspring, whereas mattress with thicker comfort layers are considered hybrids.

Innerspring mattresses almost always contain a high-density polyfoam base layer, which both keeps the bed stable and provides reinforcement for the coils. There are four main types of coils, including Bonnell, offset continuous coil wire, and pocket coils, which we’ll discuss in detail in the innerspring mattress buying guide below.

Types of Innerspring Mattresses

Innerspring mattresses are distinguished by the type of coils they contain, which fall into several categories.

Pocket Spring Coils (Wrapped/Encased Coils)

Often referred to as pocketed coils, pocket spring coils enhance the contouring properties of a mattress and reduce its motion transfer. The coils are encased in a cloth and connected to one another by thin strands of fabric. They are typically the most expensive models available.

Open Coils

Innerspring mattresses with open coils are considered traditional innerspring mattresses and contain interconnected coils in a metal mesh. The mesh provides even support throughout the mattress.

Offset Coils

Offset coils have an hourglass shape and a hinge-like, flat bottom. They’re joined together with helical (spiral-shaped wires), and their bottoms are straightened to create the hinging effect when the mattress is compressed. Offset coils can be found in double offset or free arm offset styles. They’re considered to be the most durable type of innerspring coil.

Continuous Wire Coils

Continuous wire coils are designed to withstand heavy compression. These mattresses contain several rows of singular wires that are molded into circular shapes and joined by helical on either side. Similar to offset coils, this design creates a hinging effect, and continuous wire coils are known for their stability and resilience. However, continuous wire coils can’t contour to your body as well, which results in a shorter lifespan for the mattress overall.

Hybrids

Hybrid mattresses combine two or more support systems. Typically, hybrid mattresses contain an innerspring system with layers of memory foam or latex on top. As mentioned above, there are two main types of innerspring mattresses: hybrid and innerspring. Traditional innerspring models are made with an interconnected “grid” of coils covered by a thin comfort layer. Hybrid mattresses are often made with individually pocketed coils and thicker comfort layers. See our article on the best hybrid mattresses for more information.

Considerations When Buying an Innerspring Mattress

When shopping for an innerspring mattress, these are the most important features and considerations to keep in mind.

Coil Type

As discussed above, the coil type can impact the durability, quality, and price of the mattress.

Coil Count

Coil count refers to the number of coils used in the coil layer of the mattress. Most innerspring mattresses contain anywhere from 500 to 1,000 coils, though some contain less than 300 and others contain several thousand. Coil count can be an indicator of lifespan and the mattress’ contouring capabilities. In general, high coil count innerspring mattresses tend to be the most expensive and the most contouring.

Feel

Prior to shopping for an innerspring mattress, it’s essential to be sure than an innerspring mattress is, in fact, the type of mattress you want to purchase. Just like hybrid and all-foam styles, innerspring mattresses have a signature feel that sleepers either do or don’t enjoy. In general, people find innerspring mattresses to be less contouring to the body than foam models. However, they also find that innerspring mattresses have stronger edge support, are cooler, and have better responsiveness than other styles.

Price

Innersprings are often priced lower than other mattress types, but luxury styles can still cost several thousand dollars.

Lifespan

One of the leading criticisms of innerspring mattresses is their durability. Over the years, innerspring mattresses have become known for short lifespans relative to other beds on the market. Premature sagging, lack of motion isolation, and other durability-related issues are still an issue in some innerspring models, but manufacturers have improved innerspring coil technology in recent years to help combat these issues.

Innerspring Mattress Price Range

Under $1,000: It won’t be too difficult to find an innerspring mattress for under $1,000, but the quality may not be up to your standards. Beds at this price usually use continuous wire coils, which won’t be as durable as pocket spring coils. If you have your heart set on this price range, take a look at our best mattresses under $1,000 for more options.

$1000 – $1,500: At this price range, a solid innerspring mattress with pocket spring coils shouldn’t be too difficult to find. Still, even with the improved coils, you may find an innerspring mattress at this price to be too firm for you.

Over $1,500: For this price, you’ll be able to get yourself a nice hybrid mattress, meaning it will be made with innerspring coils as well as layers of foam for added comfort. Hybrid mattresses are some of the best on the market, so quality will not be an issue. That said, if you were hoping for something a bit cheaper check out our best affordable mattresses page.

Pros & Cons of Innerspring Mattresses

Pros
Innersprings provide a relatively flat, firm sleeping surface that’s especially supportive for back and stomach sleepers
Due to the airflow allowed between the coils, innerspring mattresses tend to sleep cooler than all-foam models. Check out our breakdown of foam vs. spring mattresses for more differences.
Off-gassing is less common with innerspring mattresses than it is in hybrid and memory foam mattresses
Innerspring mattresses are among the most affordable options on the market
Cons
Sleepers complain of sagging and durability issues
Innersprings don’t offer as much contouring or pressure relief as foam
Cheap innerspring mattresses can be squeaky and don’t isolate motion well, which can lead to poor sleep for couples
The average lifespan of innerspring mattresses is relatively short when compared to other styles on the market

Best Sleeping Positions for Innerspring Mattresses

Side Sleeping

If you’re one of the many sleepers who they’re most comfortable on their side, you will likely want to look for a mattress on the soft to medium end of the mattress firmness scale. Innerspring mattresses can be a tad firm for most side sleepers, but remember, a bed can be made softer with a good mattress topper.

If you want to learn more about this position, check out our best mattress for side sleepers page.

Back Sleeping

Back sleepers tend to be the easiest to please. Something right around the middle of the firmness scale should provide a good level of support and comfort. Luckily, you’ll find that many innerspring mattresses fall around this firmness.

For more information, take a look at our best mattress for back sleepers page.

Stomach Sleeping

As a stomach sleeper, you need a firm mattress that won’t allow your hips and shoulders to sink too far below the surface. Innerspring mattresses are pretty firm by nature, but you’ll want to make sure you specifically look for one with a firmness rating of 6.5 or above.

Our article on the best mattresses for stomach sleepers have some great options for you.

FAQs on the Best Innerspring Mattresses

What sleeping position is best suited for an innerspring mattress?

It depends on the firmness of the mattress. A high firmness will best accommodate stomach sleepers, medium firmness is best for back sleepers, and side sleepers tend to do well on a softer mattress. If you’re interested in an innerspring mattress that’s on the softer end of the firmness scale make sure you look for something with a substantial comfort layer or even a pillow top.

What is the difference between an innerspring and memory foam mattress?

The main difference will be in the firmness and feel. As memory foam mattresses simply consist of layers of foam, they tend to be softer than the average innerspring mattress. Memory foam also provides a sinking feeling that can help provide contouring and pressure relief, but can also make some feel like it’s difficult to move around on the mattress. Innerspring, on the other hand, is more likely to have a great responsiveness, making it easy to move around and change sleeping positions in bed.
