Cocoon Hybrid Mattress Video Review

Pros/Complaints

Pros

  • Sleeps Cool: Sealy used cooling technologies in the mattress cover and a breathable spring layer to create a bed that helps keep hot sleepers from overheating.
  • Pressure-Relieving Memory Foam: The Cocoon Chill has traditional memory foam comfort layers for a luxurious feel and excellent pressure relief
  • Good for Couples: The Cocoon Chill Hybrid’s thick memory foam comfort layers work alongside individually encased coils to create one of the best hybrid mattresses at minimizing motion transfer. By dampening motion, the Chill helps couples sleep together with fewer interruptions.

Complaints

  • Not for Heavyweight Stomach Sleepers: The Cocoon Chill doesn’t have the level of support needed by stomach sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds.
  • Not for Innerspring Mattress Fans: While the Cocoon Hybrid has supportive innerspring coils, its thick foam comfort layers cradle the body and dampen the springiness. If you like a bouncy mattress, this isn’t the right fit.
  • Not for People Who Like a Firm Feel: The Cocoon Chill has a traditional memory foam mattress hugging feel, which isn’t what firm mattress fans who like the feel of sleeping “on” a bed are looking for.

How Does the Chill Hybrid Mattress Feel?

Firmness

Mattress firmness is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing the best bed for you. Some sleepers require a plush, enveloping surface, while others do better on an extra-firm surface.

We rate mattresses on a 1-10 firmness scale, with one being cottonball-soft. The Cocoon Chill Hybrid lands at a 6/10, which makes it a medium-firm mattress. Most sleepers prefer a medium-firm bed because there’s plenty of support for healthy spinal alignment paired with soft cushion for pressure points

Because the Cocoon Chill Hybrid pairs two comfort layers of traditional memory foam with a thick layer of pocketed coils, it gently cradles the body’s curves while still providing outstanding support. The feel is one that falls between sleeping “on” and “in” the surface of the mattress.

Temperature

As the name suggests, the Cocoon Chill Hybrid is designed for cool sleep. The cooling cover contains Sealy’s patented phase change material that’s designed to absorb body heat and move it away, keeping the sleeping surface cool. Paired with the breathable coil layer and you have a bed that’s cool enough for most hot sleepers. For other beds great for hot sleepers, check out our compilation of the best cooling mattresses.

Support

The most supportive mattresses are durable, supportive enough for bigger bodies and have sturdy edges. The Cocoon mattress is more supportive than your average bed. Its memory foam comfort layers are made from foam that’s slightly denser than normal, which helps to resist body impressions. The innerspring support layer is strong, boosting mattress longevity and providing the structure that heavyweight people need.

Thanks to sturdier coils found around the Cocoon Chill’s perimeter, you won’t feel like you’re going to fall off when you lie or sit along the edges. Edge support is especially important for couples who like to spread out and for elderly folks who need extra support when getting into or out of bed.

Back Sleepers

The Cocoon Chill Hybrid has everything that we look for in a mattress for back sleepers. With a medium-firm feel that brings both cushioning and support, the Cocoon bed brings the lightly contouring feel that works for lightweight, average-weight and heavyweight back sleepers. However, plus-size people who weigh more than 300 pounds may find a touch too much sinkage at the hips. If this is you, head over to our list of the best mattresses for back sleepers

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleeping is the hardest sleep position to achieve proper spinal alignment. Stomach sleepers need a surface that’s soft enough to cushion the chest while remaining firm enough at the hips to minimize sinkage. The Cocoon Chill Hybrid is a great fit for stomach sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds because lightweight people won’t experience too much sagging at the body’s heavier trunk.

The more that you weigh, the less likely you are to experience adequate spinal alignment on the Cocoon Chill Hybrid when on your front. Average-weight folks without a heavy core may find themselves comfortable, but heavyweight people and those with a pear-shaped body should look for something with more durable support along the middle of the bed. Check out our best mattresses for stomach sleepers for beds better suited for heavier stomach sleepers.

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers often struggle to find a bed that provides enough give at the shoulders and hips to minimize pressure and pain. The Cocoon Chill Hybrid stands out in that it has two layers of memory foam that are thicker than your average comfort layers, delivering superb cushion for average-weight and heavyweight side sleepers. We do caution that people who weigh more than 300 pounds might find their lower back sinking in a bit too far.

Lightweight side sleepers don’t exert as much pressure on the mattress’s surface, and with relatively dense memory foam along the top layer, people who weigh less than 130 pounds may find the surface too firm for adequate pressure relief. For a bed with even greater cushion for lightweight folks, check out our top picks in our best mattresses for side sleepers list.

Combination Sleepers

The Cocoon Chill Hybrid is okay for combination sleepers, but it’s not one of the best mattresses for combination sleepers—whether you’re lightweight, average-weight or heavyweight. Because the Cocoon has a distinct memory foam feel, it’s not quite as responsive as hybrid beds with thinner, more responsive comfort layers. What this means is that it’s more difficult to switch positions than on more springy beds.

However, if you’re someone who spends most of your time on your back and doesn’t toss and turn too much, the Cocoon Chill may be a good fit. It’s more responsive than most all-foam mattresses and offers impressive support when back sleeping and good support for most people when on their sides or stomachs.

Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  5 5 4
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): 5 3 4
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  3 2 3

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Does the Cocoon Chill Hybrid Fit Your Needs?

Joint Pain

People with joint pain need a mattress that’s soft enough to cradle problem areas, evenly distributing weight so that there isn’t too much pressure at any one spot. The Cocoon Chill Hybrid is a good pick for people with joint pain thanks to a combination of thick memory foam comfort layers and individually pocketed coils. The memory foam gives at heavier areas, while the pocketed coils ensure proper support and give where they’re needed.

When finding the right mattress for pain relief, you should consider both your primary sleeping position and your body weight. We believe the Cocoon Chill works well for back, stomach and side sleepers with body pain.

Value Shoppers

Bed-in-a-box mattresses like the Cocoon Chill Hybrid are typically more affordable than similar beds found at brick-and-mortar retail stores. By minimizing costs, such as showroom expenses and salesperson commissions, mattress companies are able to provide customers with high-quality beds at competitive prices.

While the Cocoon Chill Hybrid has competitive pricing for its high-end construction, it’s not one of the most affordable mattresses around. At $1,499 for a queen-size bed, shoppers on a tight budget may decide to look elsewhere. But, keep in mind that Sealy often offers sales on the Cocoon Chill Hybrid, and by clicking on any of the links in this article, you’ll receive an exclusive Mattress Nerd discount that may bring the Cocoon into your price range.

Construction: What’s Under the Cocoon Chill Hybrid Mattress?

The Cocoon Chill Hybrid combines contouring memory foam with durable innerspring coils for a pressure-relieving and supportive mattress. Thanks to thicker-than-normal comfort layers, the Cocoon Chill provides the pressure relief that side sleepers and people with joint pain need. The pocketed coils bring durability and support that works for people of every body size. The Cocoon Chill Hybrid has a medium-firm feel and measures a thick 12” tall.

Layer #1: Cooling Mattress Cover: A stretch-knit fabric with patented phase change materials helps move body heat away from the surface for a fresh and cool night’s sleep.

Layer #2: Perfect Fit Memory Foam Comfort Layer (1”): The top layer of slow-response foam has a traditional memory foam feel, much like that of more expensive Tempur-Pedic mattresses. This layer molds to the body for a pressure-relieving cradle.

Layer #3: Perfect Fit Memory FoamTransition Layer (2.25”): A second memory foam layer ensures generous pressure relief for heavier body parts. This layer of memory foam is a bit firmer and more responsive than the top layer, minimizing sagging and making it easier to move around.

Layer #4: Active Support Technology Coil Layer (8”): A thick layer of pocketed coils moves independently, limiting motion transfer, so couples can sleep together with fewer disruptions. The coils give at heavier body parts and support lighter ones, evenly distributing weight for excellent spinal alignment.

Layer #5: High-Density Polyfoam Base Layer (0.75”): A thin layer of high-density support foam enhances longevity and further dampens motion transfer.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

Sealy mattresses ship for free to all 50 states via UPS. Most customers receive their new mattress in three to 10 business days. The Cocoon Chill Hybrid is a bed-in-a-box mattress that arrives compressed into a box that measures 15” x 15” x 44”. So long as there is a safe place for the delivery person to leave the box, you do not need to be home to receive it.

To set up the mattress, carry it to your room while still in its box and remove it from its packaging on top of the foundation. Because the bed has been compressed, it may take a night or two to fully expand. During this time, you might notice a scent known as off-gassing. This is typical of beds with foam layers and fades within a few days.

Warranty

Sealy mattresses come with the industry-standard, 10-year limited warranty. Mattress warranties cover defects, not user damage or changes that are expected from normal wear and tear. Some examples of defects include physical flaws, like cracks, in the foam layers or body indentations greater than 1” deep.

Trial Period & Returns

The Cocoon Chill Hybrid comes with a 100-night sleep trial, the most common trial in the bed-in-a-box mattress industry. This at-home trial allows you to get to know your new bed and decide if it’s everything you want. If you choose to return it, you’re able to do so for a full refund at any time during the 100-night trial. Sealy will send someone to your home to pick up the bed and take it to a local charity so it won’t go to waste.

While Sealy doesn’t require that you try the mattress for 30 days like most companies, understand that it can take a few weeks to adjust to a new bed. Not only do the foams take a bit of use to break in, but the body’s musculature needs to get used to a new feel and firmness.

Cocoon Chill Hybrid Mattress FAQ’s

Can I flip my Cocoon Chill mattress?

Is the Cocoon Chill mattress a good mattress?

Comparing the Cocoon Hybrid Mattress

Cocoon Chill Hybrid vs. Cocoon Chill Mattress

The Cocoon Chill is a memory foam mattress, while the Chill Hybrid swaps out support foam with pocketed coils. Because both beds have a medium-firm firmness level and a hugging memory foam feel, they both appeal to similar shoppers.

The original Cocoon Chill is less expensive, but it sleeps slightly warmer and isn’t as easy to move around on as the Chill Hybrid. The Chill Hybrid is better for heavier folks thanks to the greater support and durability that comes from the steel coil base layer.

The Layla is a flippable all-foam bed with a softer and firmer side. The softer side is medium-soft while the firmer side is medium-firm. Both the Layla and Cocoon Chill utilize memory foam in the top layers which delivers great pressure relief, but the softer side of the Layla is better for lightweight side sleepers who need a softer surface.

The Layla is a great option for people who have changing firmness needs, such as the elderly, pregnant women, and growing kids. The Cocoon Chill Hybrid’s innerspring coils make it better for hot sleepers and plus-size people.

Cocoon Chill Hybrid vs. Casper Original Mattress

The Casper is a memory foam mattress with a similar medium-firm feel as the Cocoon Chill Hybrid. Both beds have thick memory foam layers that cradle the body, but Casper’s all-foam construction makes it better at minimizing motion transfer

The Cocoon Chill Hybrid sleeps cooler than the Casper thanks to cooling innovations and airy innerspring coils. It’s a better fit for heavier folks thanks to the added durability and support that comes from the pocketed coil support system.

Cocoon Chill Hybrid vs. Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Mattress

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora is a hybrid mattress that comes in multiple firmness options. The soft version is softer than the Cocoon Chill Hybrid, the medium option is similar in firmness, and the firm model is firmer than the Cocoon. These differences in firmness make the Aurora superior for ultra-soft and firm mattress fans.

Another difference between these beds is the feel and construction of their comfort layers. Brooklyn Bedding utilizes more responsive polyfoam along the surface while the Cocoon Chill has deeply conforming memory foam. This difference makes the Brooklyn Aurora easier to move around on and the Cocoon Chill better at cushioning pressure points.
