If we link the word “cocoon” with “sleep,” I think most of us would agree that we’re painting the ideal picture when it comes to getting a good night’s rest. We want to feel secure when we sleep. The name itself set the scene for consumers when industry leader Sealy rolled out the Cocoon by Sealy Mattress in 2016. Now add the word “chill.” The newest memory foam iteration of the Cocoon by Sealy line still has that comforting feeling, but now it also keeps your body at the right temperature. The Cocoon is consistently one of our top picks for the best cooling mattress and best mattress for hot sleepers.

The 10-inch thick, full memory foam Chill model has phase change material within the cover itself. “Phase change” materials regulate body temperature in this mattress. The material absorbs heat when you’re too warm and releases it when you’re too cold. The material does that by changing phases, becoming solid in a cooler state and melting/liquefying in a warmer state.

Mattress companies are always on the lookout for ways to keep a sleeper cool at night. Scientific research suggests that the optimal room temperature for falling asleep is 68 degrees. Our bodies operate at 98.6 degrees. If you sleep on a mattress that retains heat, you won’t be able to stay in that cool zone.

For this version, Cocoon by Sealy addressed it directly by adding  “phase-change” material to the cover of the Chill mattress. Phase-change material absorbs heat when you’re too hot to cool you, and releases it when you’re too cold to warm you, to regulate your body temperature against extreme highs or lows.

Sealy promises that their “perfect fit” memory foam will work for your “body size, shape and sleep position.” That’s a large promise. Memory foam always does well adapting to curves and cradling sleepers. The Chill mattresses have two types, the comfort layer and a durable, high-density type for the support layer. Cocoon by Sealy varies the second layer to offer you a medium-soft and an extra-firm option.

Customers approve of how easy it is to move and how quickly it inflated into its full shape out of the box. For other great options, check out the best online mattresses available today.

Cocoon by Sealy Chill Mattress by Sleeping Positions

Back Stomach Side Combination
✅Extra firm option supports spine and hips

✅Maintains spine alignment

✅The extra firm option keeps hips elevated and maintains a neutral spine position

✅Memory foam contours to problem areas

❌Lightweight back sleepers may find this option too firm for their liking

✅Medium-soft option cradles hips and shoulders, providing exceptional pressure relief

✅Gives you the feeling of sinking into your mattress

✅Most average weight sleepers will enjoy this mattress and feel well-supported in any position they shift to

❌Requires more effort to move from position to position if you are larger and choose the medium soft option

Back Sleepers: Those who rest on their back will enjoy the extra firm option as this falls somewhere at a 8 on the firmness scale, meaning this memory foam bed offers the proper support and contouring back sleepers need. The Cocoon by Sealy’s extra firm option features a denser foam layer that offers excellent spine alignment, helping to promote a healthy posture and back pain relief. For similar options, see best mattresses for back sleepers

Stomach Sleepers: Stomach sleepers need a mattress that supports their chest and shoulders, while also elevating the hips to prevent any sinkage and spine curvature. The extra firm option for the Cocoon Chill mattress will suit stomach sleepers nicely by providing adequate support, helping to keep the hips in line and spine straight.

Side Sleepers: The Cocoon by Sealy Chill mattress is a great mattress for side sleepers. Side sleepers need extra cushioning and pressure relief for their hips and shoulders, and this mattress surely doesn’t disappoint with its comfort layer that cradles your curves. The medium-soft firmness option would benefit side sleepers the most as this falls somewhere in the middle on the firmness scale and features a more flexible layer of support foam that both supports and relieves your pressure points.

Combination Sleepers: The best mattress for combination sleepers is responsive and isolates motion well. These sleepers would sleep well on either firmness option, but may enjoy the medium-soft option for its softness and more adaptable support. Either way, this bed does a phenomenal job at limiting motion transfer thanks to its flexible memory foam top layer. Couples would enjoy this feature and experience plenty of uninterrupted, restful nights of sleep.

  • Medium Soft is more like a 4/10 on the firmness scales
  • Extra Firm is not quite “extra” and feels more like a medium-firm or the coveted 6/10 on the scale.

For mattresses that feel firmer and may provide additional support, check out the best firm mattresses.

The Chill mattress has two layers of foam, and the base layer will vary in density depending on which firmness level you choose. The top comfort layer is made of the Perfect Fit memory foam from Sealy. It will cradle your curves and that’s what you want at the top to keep your spine in a neutral, straight position as your sleep.

The support layer is made of “Essential Support Foam.” It’s heavier and denser. Be advised here: Because the Chill mattress comes in both Medium Soft and Extra Firm, this bottom layer will vary in density depending on which you choose. The medium-soft version has a Flexible Essential Support Foam and the extra-firm model comes with a Reinforced Essential Support Foam. These supportive foams help protect the spine and create a better mattress for back pain.

The fabric cover was made with a phase-change material that will keep you cool as you sleep. Phase-change materials regulate temperature by release heat if you’re too cool or drawing it away if you’re too warm. It is breathable and durable. It’s also made of a stretchy material that won’t constrict your movements on top of the comfort layer.

Shipping, Delivery, and Returns

Mattresses are shipped compressed inside a box for free via UPS Ground from the company’s plant in Mississippi. Cocoon by Sealy won’t ship outside of the United States. You can call the company if you’d like to talk about Saturday or expedited delivery. In general, the mattress will arrive between 5-7 days.

Cocoon by Sealy Chill Mattress Trial-Period

You have 100 days to figure out if the mattress works for you. And you’re allowed to send it back once during that time frame if you want to swap the Medium Soft for the Extra Firm version or vice versa with no fees. After that, if you still want to send it back, you’ll receive a full refund of the purchase price within 1-2 days after you make arrangements. Sealy will work to find a place to donate or recycle the mattress.

I would tell anyone to test drive a new mattress for at least 30 days of whatever trial period you have for your mattress.  It’s just a smart way to approach a new mattress. It takes at least 30 days for you to adapt to the feel of the mattress and to break it in. If you end up not liking it, the company will refund you 100% of the purchase price.

This all-foam mattress comes with a 10-year limited warranty. They’ll repair or replace the mattress for the original owner if it shows up with or eventually reveals manufacturing defects or material flaws that have nothing to do with wear and tear. That’s also assuming you’re using the right kind of foundation—a firm, solid-surface or adjustable base that can hold the mattress and the sleeper. Or a slatted base with at least 2-inch wide slats placed no more than 5 inches apart.

The warranty covers indentations of at least 1 inch, too. It doesn’t cover any damage you caused or any mattresses sold by resellers.

Cocoon by Sealy Chill Mattress Rating and Conclusion

We here at Mattress Nerd give the Cocoon a 4.8/5. Back when Sealy introduced the original Cocoon, it wanted to give customers, who eagerly jumped into the online mattress arena, a great choice with the Sealy name on it. What they gave customers was an affordable, solid memory foam mattress, sold at the online hub for the mattress itself and shipped free in a compressed in a box to U.S. consumers.

Sealy can adapt easily to changing trends and does so here by adding a proprietary “phase-change” material into the cover fabric itself. The Chill model of Cocoon by Sealy uses that material to keep sleepers at a neutral temperature while they sleep. Sleepers avoid waking up, throwing the covers off if they’re too hot or shivering if they’re too cold. The material releases heat or retains it depending on which is your specific temperature challenge in bed.

Overall, the Cocoon by Sealy Chill Mattress ticks nearly all the boxes. It’s affordable. It’s serviceable. You have the option of two firmness levels. It’s made well. It’s backed by one of the three most recognizable names in the mattress business. If you’re into memory foam and need a bed to keep you cool, you could do a lot worse than the Chill model by Cocoon by Sealy. But if you want an even cooler mattress with breathable coils, check out the Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress

Does the Cocoon by Sealy Chill Mattress produce any off-gassing?

When you first unbox your Cocoon by Sealy Chill mattress, there may be a faint smell, but don’t fret; the foams used in this mattress are CertiPUR-US certified and do not contain harmful chemicals. Any scent you detect is a result of the cells in the foam opening and will dissipate within a week.

How much weight can the Chill mattress support?

The Cocoon by Sealy Chill mattress can hold a maximum of 500 lbs, so heavy co-sleepers may want a bed capable of supporting a little more weight.

Do I have to be home for my Cocoon by Sealy mattress delivery?

You do not have to be home when your new mattress is delivered; UPS will simply leave the box at your front door. If you require special delivery needs, you can call Cocoon by Sealy’s Customer Care staff at 888-818-4039.
