Tuft & Needle Mattress vs. Brooklyn Bedding Comparison

Brooklyn Bedding and Tuft & Needle both make high-quality value mattresses, so what sets the two apart? We’ll explain the differences between the two best-selling brands in this mattress comparison and how one brand might be better for your specific sleep needs.

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature is a hybrid mattress that comes in three firmness levels. The Signature has been referred to as the “Best Bed Ever” and features high-quality construction at a reasonable price point. It also has great performance almost across the board, from motion isolation to cooling and comfort, making it one of the best hybrid mattresses at a value price. The Tuft & Needle Mattress, a top memory foam mattress, with a medium-firm feel and gel-and graphite-infused polyfoams for added cooling. The T&N is 10” tall, nicely balances body-contouring and support, and sleeps cool for an all-foam mattress.

To see all of the mattresses offered by Tuft & Needle, read our Tuft & Needle Mattress Comparison.

Comparing Brooklyn Bedding vs. Tuft and Needle Mattresses

The Brooklyn Bedding and Tuft & Needle mattresses are each great, high-quality picks, but you should definitely steer toward the Tuft & Needle if you’re on a budget. If you’re plus-sized, the Brooklyn Bedding mattress will be a better choice for you.

Differences

  • Firmness Options—The T&N mattress comes in just one firmness level: medium-firm. The Brooklyn Signature, on the other hand, is available in soft, medium, and firm settings.
  • Type—The T&N is an all-foam mattress, and the Brooklyn Signature is a hybrid mattress, combining coils and foam.
  • Support for Body Types—The Brooklyn Signature tends to provide adequate support for sleepers in all bodyweight categories, but the T&N struggles to provide enough support for heavyweight sleepers (especially those that sleep on their sides).
  • Price—While both beds are value picks, the T&N is less expensive than the Brooklyn Signature.

Similarities

  • High Value—Both mattresses feature high-quality materials and thoughtful design, and they’re both priced lower than average when compared to similar mattresses in their respective categories, making them some of the best affordable mattresses.
  • Thickness—The mattresses share similar heights. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature is 11.5” tall and the T&N Mattress is 10” tall.
  • Weight—The Brooklyn Bedding Signature is significantly heavier than the T&N, clocking in at 105 pounds for a Queen size, but this is to be expected when comparing a hybrid mattress to an all-foam bed.
  • Motion Isolation—Both beds isolate motion to a significant extent, considering one is an all foam mattress and one is a hybrid.
  • Conforming—The T&N and Brooklyn Signature conform to the body in varying degrees. The soft version of the Signature is the most conforming of the three options, and the T&N offers a moderate amount of conforming and pressure relief.

Who is the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Best For?

Best For…

  • Shoppers who want multiple firmness options: the Brooklyn Bedding Signature is available in soft, medium and firm firmness levels

Who is the Tuft and Needle Mattress Best For?

Best For…

  • Budget shoppers seeking out a value all-foam bed will fall for the Tuft & Needle’s competitive pricing
  • Couples and co-sleepers looking for motion isolation will appreciate the minimal motion-transfer abilities of the Tuft & Needle’s all-foam construction
  • Those who want a balanced feel (otherwise known as a neutral feel) in an all-foam bed
  • Lightweight and average-weight sleepers will find enough support in the Tuft & Needle’s foam layers

May Not be Best For…

  • Those who love a traditional memory foam feel in an all-foam mattress will find the Tuft & Needle a little more firm and responsive than a traditional foam “cradling” feeling, making it a better mattress for combination sleepers to change positions on.
  • Heavyweight sleepers should look for a more supportive bed with coils

Deciding Between Brooklyn Bedding and Tuft & Needle

Firmness / Feel

A mattress’s firmness and its suitability for your body is typically tied to your sleeping position and body weight. For example, if you sleep primarily on your side, you’re likely to prefer a softer mattress that will allow for more sinking in the hips and shoulders. If you sleep on your stomach or back, a firmer mattress is usually the way to go as these settings will maintain a more even sleeping surface to prevent the hips or neck from sinking.

The T&N mattress is medium-firm, and its low-density polyfoam comfort layer will provide some contouring and relief for pressure points without letting the body sink deeply into the mattress. This creates a comfortable feel, but sleepers who crave that signature memory foam experience won’t find what they’re looking for in the T&N. However, if you want the pressure relief of memory foam but prefer more bounce, the T&N could be a great option. It has a feel that falls somewhere between sleeping “in” the mattress and sleeping “on” it.

The Brooklyn Signature’s feel varies depending on the firmness setting you choose. The soft option provides deep contouring and a plush feel that alleviates pressure for the entire body, while the medium setting provides a balance of support and contouring. The firmer option is supportive, but sleepers will experience very little contouring if they choose this firmness setting. We suggest checking our recommendations on the best mattress for side sleepers for softer mattresses that contour around the body more.

Motion Isolation

Movement across a mattress, or motion transfer, may not be an issue if you sleep by yourself, but if you sleep with a partner, pet, or child, you’ll want to take this into consideration. If you choose a mattress that has poor motion transfer performance, – essentially, a bed that passes motion to the other side of the bed easily –  you may end up with sleep disruptions for yourself or your partner throughout the night.

In general, mattresses that are softer, such as all-foam beds, minimize motion transfer better than more responsive styles, including latex and hybrid beds. Both the T&N and Brooklyn Signature absorb motion very well relative to their mattress style categories, making them good mattresses for couples.

Edge Support

Mattresses tend to sink toward their edges as people sit on them and get in and out of bed over time. Edge support refers to a bed’s ability to deter sinkage on the edge of the bed for a longer period of time.

This is an important mattress quality to consider if you have trouble getting in and out of bed, like to sit on the edge of your bed often, or have concerns about the mattress’ durability. The Brooklyn Signature Mattress has far better edge support than the Tuft & Needle Mattress, but that advantage comes from the Brooklyn’s layer of metal coils. Most all-foam mattresses, like the Tuft & Needle, fall short in this category.

Pressure Relief

“Pressure relief” is the mattress’s ability to conform to the sleeper’s body and prevent tension in pressure points by aligning the spine and cradling the body. Mattresses with thicker comfort layers, like memory foam mattress styles and some hybrid beds, tend to offer the best conforming and pressure relief.

If you constantly struggle with aches and pains, this can be an important mattress quality to prioritize in order to achieve a great night’s sleep. Both the Tuft & Needle and Brooklyn Signature offer excellent pressure relief, even though the way the relief feels differs slightly.

Overall, the coils of the Brooklyn Bedding should support heavier sleepers better, without unwanted pressure building up in their shoulders and hips. Both options are great mattresses for back sleepers, firm enough to support the entire body without the hips sinking too deep into the mattress.

Spine Alignment

Spinal alignment is almost always discussed when determining whether a mattress is supportive enough for a sleeper’s body. Support is a bed’s ability to provide an even sleeping surface that supports the spine and pelvis and does not sink excessively beneath heavier areas of the body.

This can be difficult to achieve because mattresses that feel very comfortable and plush can sometimes fall short in this area. If you’re a back sleeper focused on spinal alignment, take a look at the firmer Tuft & Needle or the firm setting of the Brooklyn Bedding mattress. Though these won’t feel as “plush” or “cloud-like” when you lay down on them at night, it’s far more important to have all-night alignment that doesn’t leave you with aches and pains in the morning. For more firm mattresses that focus on spinal alignment, see our picks for the best mattress for stomach sleepers.

Durability

How long a mattress lasts is often referred to as its durability. The average mattress lifespan is roughly seven years. Construction, brand, material quality, and mattress type all play into durability, among other factors. All-foam beds tend to be less durable than hybrid mattresses, for example, due to the fact that foams compress and lose their shape much faster than coils. That being said, both the Tuft & Needle and Brooklyn Bedding models have competitive warranties that show the brands’ confidence in their product.

Temperature

Some mattresses sleep cooler than others, so temperature regulation should be a priority if you tend to sleep hot at night. Keep in mind that certain mattress styles, most notably all-foam beds, tend to trap more heat than others. Most new all-foam beds, including the Tuft & Needle, incorporate cooling gels to mitigate this, but they typically don’t sleep quite as cool as hybrid or innerspring mattresses. See our recommendations for the best mattress for hot sleepers.

Brooklyn Bedding vs. Tuft and Needle Mattress Construction

Brooklyn Bedding Construction

  Brooklyn Bedding Signature
Cover Quilted cotton

.5” polyfoam

Comfort Layer  2” gel-infused TitanFlex polyfoam
Transitional Layer 2” of gel-infused Energex polyfoam
Support Layer 6” pocketed coils

1” high-density polyfoam base layer

Mattress Thickness  11.5”

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Mattress is a hybrid mattress that features foam and pocketed coils. It measures 11.5” tall in all three firmness settings (soft, medium, and firm).

The Signature’s coil and foam layers are encased in a quilted cotton cover with .5” of polyfoam sewn onto the bottom portion of the fabric. The addition of foam to the mattress’ cover helps with advanced pressure relief, making it one of the best mattresses for side sleepers and heavier sleepers who need more cushioning.

The top layer of comfort foam is a 2” gel-infused TitanFlex polyfoam, which contours closer to the body than latex but not as much as memory foam. This creates a feel that’s pressure relieving for most sleepers but also supports the body in every sleeping position, especially stomach sleepers and back sleepers.

The exact feel of the comfort foam layer will depend on the setting chosen, with the soft setting providing the most contouring, the medium setting providing a mix of contouring and support, and the firm setting providing great support and little contouring.

The transition layer of the Signature is 2” of gel-infused Energex polyfoam. This provides a buffer between the comfort foam and the pocketed coils at the center of the mattress.

The base layer is 1” of high-density polyfoam, which adds reinforcement for the coils and support for the rest of the mattress.

Tuft and Needle Construction

Cover Knit polyester-blend
Comfort Layer  3” 2.8 PCF polyfoam
Transitional Layer N/A
Support Layer 7” 1.8 PCF high-density polyfoam
Mattress Thickness  10”

The T&N Mattress is an all-foam bed that measures 10” tall and has a medium-firm feel and three foam layers.

It features a knit polyester-blend cover that has a stretchy, breathable feel but is not removable. Spot cleaning the cover is recommended. This is followed by a 3” layer of polyfoam that’s low-density, which helps the T&N avoid absorbing heat from the sleeper’s body. This layer is also graphite- and gel-infused, helping make the surface of the mattress even more temperature neutral than most all-foam beds.

The support layer of the mattress contains 7” of high-density polyfoam. This layer stabilizes the comfort layer and the bed as a whole to provide support to sleepers, enhance durability, and prevent sagging. There is no transition layer or base layer in this mattress.

Our Final Take: Brooklyn Bedding vs. Tuft & Needle

There’s no “best mattress” in this matchup, and the right new mattress for you will depend on your budget, preferences, and priorities. In general, however, we’d argue that the Brooklyn Bedding Signature is more likely to check the boxes of your average shopper. It’s made with high-quality materials, comes in three firmness settings (there’s an option for every body type and sleeping position), and has great reviews. Still, it’s a bit more expensive than the Tuft & Needle flagship bed.

We recommend the Tuft & Needle if you have your sights set on an all-foam bed or have a tighter budget. The T&N is just as pressure relieving and motion isolating, and if its medium-firm setting can work for your body type, it’s certainly not a bad option.
