Tuft & Needle vs. Lull Mattress Comparison

The Tuft & Needle and Lull are both affordable, all-foam online mattresses, so how do you know which one is better for you? That’s what we’ll help you decide in this Lull vs. Tuft & Needle mattress comparison.

The Tuft & Needle Original mattress is a medium-firm bed with a breathable foam construction. The Lull has a similar firmness, but with conforming memory foam along the top layer

The T&N is better than the Lull for hot sleepers, combination sleepers, and average-weight side sleepers. But with a touch more support and a slightly firmer feel, the Lull is better suited to lightweight stomach sleepers and people with back pain.  Both beds are budget-conscious options that excel in supporting back sleepers.

Comparing the Lull & Tuft & Needle Mattresses

Differences

  • Temperature regulation: The T&N’s upper foam layer is more breathable than the Lull’s. If you find yourself waking up hot and sweaty, we recommend the T&N mattress.
  • Memory foam vs. polyfoam: The Lull contains both memory foam and polyfoam, while the T&N has only polyfoam layers. With a top memory foam layer, the Lull has a more conforming surface.
  • Ease of movement: Responsiveness is a term describing how quickly a mattress adjusts when you move. The T&N is more responsive than the Lull, allowing combination sleepers to move around more easily.

Similarities

  • All-foam construction: Both the Lull and T&N are foam beds measuring 10” tall—a common thickness for mid-range foam mattresses. Because neither contains spring coils, they don’t have a bouncy feel.
  • Excellent motion isolation: Thanks to both beds’ all-foam construction, they limit how much wiggle you’ll feel when your sleeping partner gets out of bed or moves around.
  • Best for lightweight and average-weight people: The Lull and T&N mattresses are supportive enough for people weighing less than 230 lbs, but if you weigh more, you may experience subpar support that could lead to back pain.

Who the Lull Mattress is Best For

Best For…

  • Light sleepers who share the bed: Memory foam, like that found in the Lull’s comfort layer, delivers phenomenal motion isolation. If you or your partner are easily disturbed when sleeping, the Lull may help you sleep more deeply.
  • Memory foam mattress enthusiasts: The top memory foam layer hugs that body with a slow response to movement. The feel isn’t quite like a deeply contouring memory foam, but a balanced pressure-relieving cradle with minimal sink. The Lull is also one of the best memory foam mattresses for those on a budget.
  • Indecisive shoppers: Lull customers have an entire year to sleep on their new mattress before fully committing. Plus, Lull offers full refunds during the trial period.

May Not be Best For…

  • People who like a springy bed: The memory foam feel of the Lull isn’t for those who like a bouncy, responsive mattress.
  • Hot sleepers: The top layer of the Lull is memory foam, a material known for retaining body heat. If you find most beds too warm, this will not be the best mattress for you.
  • Heavyweight people: The Lull’s minimal comfort system and foam base don’t have the durable materials we look for in a bed for plus-size folks (those over 230 lbs).

Who the Tuft & Needle Mattress is Best For

Best For…

  • Couples and those who co-sleep: The T&N mattress’s ability to limit motion transfer, combined with its responsive surface, makes it good for people who sleep together. You can move around easily without always waking the other person.
  • Hot sleepers who love foam beds: Unlike some all-foam beds that sleep hot, the Tuft & Needle utilizes breathable, open-cell polyfoam with cooling graphite and gel, creating a cool sleeping experience.
  • Shoppers looking for a good deal: At full price, the T&N costs just $695 for a queen mattress. This pricing is below average, so we consider it a budget-friendly buy.

May Not be Best For…

  • Bigger bodies: The T&N doesn’t provide sufficient support for most plus-size people. You may find your hips sink in too low, causing poor spinal alignment. Additionally, the top foam layer may soften or form body impressions faster than you’d like.
  • Plush or firm mattress fans: The T&N has a true medium-firm feel, so it’s not going to have the cloud-like feel of a softer bed or the board-like feel of an extra firm bed.

Lull vs. Tuft & Needle Performance Differences

Firmness / Feel

Lull Performance By Sleeping Position:
Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  5 3 3
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): 5 3 4
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  3 2 4
Tuft & Needle Performance By Sleeping Position:
Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  4 4 2
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): 4 3 4
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  3 2 2

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

On a 1–10 firmness scale, with one being the softest and 10 the firmest, the Lull is a 7/10, and the T&N is a 6/10—making them both medium-firm mattresses. Most people prefer medium-firm beds because they provide both cushion and support for a balanced sleeping experience. While these mattresses have a similar firmness, there are important distinctions between how they feel and for whom they work best.

The Lull is on the firmer end of the medium-firm spectrum, so we feel the most comfortable recommending it to back sleepers. The T&N’s slightly softer feel means more give at a sleeper’s pressure points, which leads us to recommend it over the Lull for side sleepers. Both beds are supportive with light contouring, which is what we look for in the best mattresses for back sleepers

Another factor to consider is your body weight. Lightweight people (< 130 lbs) will likely do best on the T&N thanks to a soft top layer that gives more easily, while both beds are good options for average-weight people (130–230 lbs). Neither one is supportive enough for heavyweight folks (> 230 lbs). If you fall into this body type category, we recommend a high-quality hybrid or innerspring mattress. Check out our guide to the best mattresses for heavy people for more info.

Motion Isolation

Because the Lull and T&N original mattresses have all foam layers, they each provide excellent motion isolation. This means that you or your partner can move around without disturbing one another.

If limiting movement is your top concern, the Lull may be your best bet. Memory foam layers—like the one found in the Lull—are the best mattress material for isolating motion. While polyfoam—which makes up each layer of the T&N—is very good at absorbing movement, it’s not quite to the level of memory foam.

For more motion-isolating options, check out the best mattresses for couples.

Edge Support

The Lull’s edges are studier than those of the T&N. The memory foam along the top grips the body well, so you won’t feel unstable whether lying or sitting along the edge. The T&N’s edges are pretty soft and tend to cave in a bit under pressure.

While most people won’t notice much of a difference, couples who share smaller beds and people who like to sit along the edges should look for a bed with excellent edge support. Strong edges mean you can spread out or use your mattress for seating.

Pressure Relief

Pressure relief is particularly important for side sleepers and those with joint pain. The T&N is a touch softer than the Lull, though both performed well during our pressure relief test. The Lull offers some cushioning comfort, but the firm base layer prevents you from sinking very deep into the top comfort layer.

Spine Alignment

The best mattresses for stomach sleepers and those with back pain maintain proper spinal alignment. That means your hips stay elevated with your shoulders. If you’re a side sleeper, it looks like your spine is in a straight line from neck to tailbone.

Achieving a good sleeping posture depends on your sleeping position and body weight. Both beds are suitable for lightweight stomach sleepers and lightweight or average-weight back sleepers. The T&N is better for average-weight side sleepers. Neither mattress is ideal for those weighing over 230 lbs—heavyweight sleepers need more support to avoid back pain.

Durability

We wouldn’t consider the Lull or T&N to be the highest quality mattresses, but they should last you five to seven years. The Lull may better resist the gradual softening that happens with foams because it has a firmer transition layer, while the T&N’s one thick comfort layer may soften slightly faster.

Temperature

Both the T&N and the Lull have cooling features along the top layer that mitigate body heat retention to some degree. But the T&N’s proprietary open-cell foam design means greater airflow when compared to the Lull’s memory foam surface. The added breathability makes the Tuft & Needle mattress more suitable than the Lull for hot sleepers—although neither sleeps as cool as the typical innerspring or hybrid mattress

If overheating is a nightly problem for you, consider checking out the best cooling mattresses for hot sleepers.

Lull Mattress Construction

LullLayers e1616686467767
Cover Breathable Mattress Cover
Comfort Layer  Gel Memory Foam (1.5”)
Transitional Layer High-Resilience Foam (1.5”)
Support Layer Durable Base Layer (7”)
Mattress Thickness  10″

The Lull mattress begins with a layer of contouring memory foam along the top of the bed. This memory foam slowly molds to your body’s curves, evenly distributing weight for a healthy spinal posture and some nice pressure relief. The second foam layer is firmer, quickly counteracting any excess sink, so you don’t feel “stuck” in the memory foam. A final high-density foam base brings stability and provides further motion isolation.

Tuft & Needle Mattress Construction

tuftneedleoriginalconstruction
Cover Soft-Knit Fabric Cover
Comfort Layer  T&N Adaptive Foam (3”)
Support Layer High-Density Support Foam (7”)
Mattress Thickness  10″

The Tuft & Needle is an all-foam mattress with a balanced feel. In other words, you’ll feel neither like you’re sleeping “on” or “in” the surface. The top layer of medium-firm foam quickly adjusts to pressure, so you won’t experience the “quicksand” memory foam feel. Also, thanks to cooling gel beads and graphite in the upper foam layer, the T&N sleeps mostly cool.

Shipping and Returns for Lull & Tuft & Needle

Lull

Lull customers in the contiguous U.S. get free shipping, and all customers have a full year to test drive their new mattress. Just like Tuft and Needle, Lull has no mandatory break-in period, so you can return your mattress at any time during the sleep trial. Simply contact Lull, and you’ll receive a full refund within a few business days of the mattress being picked up.

If you keep the mattress, Lull covers defects for as long as you own the bed—we call that a Lifetime warranty. The only downside to such a generous warranty period is that body impressions aren’t covered until they exceed 1.5”. Chances are you’ll opt for a new mattress at closer to 1”. Also keep in mind that off-gassing isn’t covered by the warranty, but rest assured that Lull mattresses are CertiPUR-US certified for no toxic emissions.

Tuft & Needle

The T&N Original mattress ships free within the continental U.S., though there is a shipping fee for customers living in Alaska or Hawaii.

You have a 100-night trial period to decide if the mattress works for you. If you find that it’s not quite what you wanted, T&N will refund the bed during the trial period. Unlike most bed-in-a-box mattress companies, T&N doesn’t have a required 30-day break-in period before requesting a return, although we still recommend giving your mattress a few weeks to let your body adjust before making a final decision.

The Tuft & Needle 10-year warranty enables you to receive a replacement mattress if yours develops material or craftsmanship defects. What impresses us is that the warranty covers body indentations along the sleeping surface at just 0.75”, compared to the standard 1”.

Our Final Take

The Tuft & Needle is the most affordable mattress in this comparison. It’s also slightly cooler and a bit easier to move around on. The Lull’s memory foam layer offers better contouring and motion isolation for couples, but the softer feel of the T&N provides better pressure relief. Both have risk-free trial periods with free returns, but Lull’s sleep trial is more generous than Tuft & Needle’s.
