Tuft & Needle vs. Nolah Mattress Comparison

If you’re looking for an affordable, all-foam mattress, then you won’t be disappointed by this Tuft & Needle vs. Nolah mattress comparison. But which is the best mattress for you? We’re here to help you decide.

The Tuft & Needle and Nolah mattresses are both affordable, all-foam bed-in-a-box options from reputable online mattress companies of the same name. The Tuft & Needle is made with two layers of supportive, buoyant foam. The Nolah is made with three layers of foam designed to stay cool and provide pressure relief

The Nolah is a great option for side sleepers, those with hip or shoulder pain, and hot sleepers. The Tuft & Needle is better for back sleepers and lightweight stomach sleepers.

Comparing Nolah and Tuft & Needle Mattresses

Key Differences

  • The Nolah is made with a highly breathable comfort foam and mattress cover, so we think it sleeps a tad cooler than the Tuft & Needle.
  • While both mattresses have a medium-firm feel, the Tuft & Needle is a bit firmer, which is best for back sleepers. The slightly softer feel of the Nolah is better for side sleepers.
  • Since it’s a little softer, the Nolah is also better for those who need deep contouring around their pressure points. The Tuft & Needle has a more supportive feel that’s ideal for those with lower back pain.

Key Similarities

  • The comfort foams used in both the Nolah and Tuft & Needle were designed to quickly adapt to movement, so both beds score high for responsiveness.
  • We found the edge support on both of these beds to be lacking, particularly when sitting on the edges of the bed.
  • The Tuft & Needle and Nolah both absorb most movement before it disrupts the rest of the mattress, so they could be good mattress options for couples concerned about motion transfer.

Who is the Tuft & Needle Mattress Best For…

  • Most back sleepers will notice that their hips and shoulders stay supported and aligned on the Tuft & Needle’s supportive layers of foam.
  • Lightweight and average-weight sleepers are likely to get just the right combination of support and cushion on the Tuft & Needle.
  • Budget-conscious shoppers will appreciate the relatively low pricing for the original Tuft & Needle mattress. A Queen size costs less than $900 before seasonal discounts.

Not Best For…

  • Heavyweight sleepers are more likely to sink straight through the top layer of foam and bump up against the firmer support layer of foam, which can cause discomfort.
  • Hot sleepers should look for a mattress with more breathability.

Who is the Nolah Mattress Best For…

  • Side sleepers with lightweight and average-weight body types are likely to get adequate pressure relief on the medium-firm Nolah.
  • Combination sleepers will experience excellent mobility on Nolah’s extra responsive AirFoam top layer.
  • Couples will benefit from the minimal motion transfer across the surface of the Nolah.

Not Best For…

  • Stomach sleepers need a firm mattress to support their lower back, so the medium-firm feel of the Nolah isn’t the best fit.
  • Heavyweight sleepers probably won’t get enough support on the Nolah, and should instead look for a mattress with coils and a height of at least 12”.

Tuft & Needle vs. Nolah Performance Differences

Firmness / Feel

At Mattress Nerd, we determine a mattress’s firmness level by testing where it falls on the firmness scale (1 being softest, and 10 being firmest). By our approximation, the Nolah is a 6/10, which is medium-firm. We consider the Tuft & Needle mattress to be on the higher end of the medium-firm spectrum at 7/10.

The materials used to make a mattress are the main factor dictating how soft or firm it is, but your body type also plays a role. Heavyweight sleepers (those over 230 lbs) are more likely to sink further into the mattress, which can make it feel softer or firmer, depending on the materials. Similarly, lightweight individuals (those under 130 lbs) often rate mattresses as firmer, since they don’t press as deep into the top layers.

Motion Isolation

You really only need to consider motion isolation if you plan to share your bed. This is especially relevant if you’re a light sleeper who’s easily disrupted by movements on your mattress.

Related: Best Mattresses for Couples

The Nolah and Tuft & Needle are both all-foam mattresses, so they’re already ahead of the competition in this category. Foam mattresses—especially memory foam mattresses—typically do a much better job at reducing motion transfer than innerspring or hybrid mattresses

During our lab testing, we gave the Nolah better scores than the T&N for motion isolation, though you’re unlikely to feel too much motion transfer on either mattress.

Edge Support

Good edge support enables you to use your full mattress surface, whether for sleeping or sitting. Neither the Nolah nor Tuft & Needle have reinforced edges, so we noticed that both offered decent support while lying near the edges of the bed, but not strong support while sitting. If edge support is an important feature for you, consider a hybrid mattress or one with extra edge support features.

Pressure Relief

Pressure relief is linked with mattress firmness because the deeper you sink into the mattress, the more pressure relief you’ll experience. We use a pressure map to determine how well mattresses cushion pressure points in different sleeping positions. During our lab testing, we gave the Nolah great pressure relief scores, but gave the Tuft & Needle only average scores.

That means that the Nolah is a better option for side sleepers, those with shoulder or hip pain, and those with joint pain.

Related: Best Mattresses for Side Sleepers

Spine Alignment

Spinal alignment is a technical way to refer to your sleeping posture. For side sleepers, good sleeping posture looks like a straight line from neck to tailbone. For back and stomach sleepers, it looks like your hips staying lifted in line with your shoulders.

Both of these mattresses do a good job of keeping your spine aligned in a healthy posture, but this is dependent on your sleeping position. The T&N mattress sustains good spinal alignment for back sleepers and lightweight stomach sleepers. The Nolah is too soft for stomach sleepers, but it has enough sinkage for side sleepers. For more options, check out the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.

Durability

The average foam bed will last you at least five years, and we think that’s the case with both the Tuft & Needle and Nolah original mattresses. As value mattresses, neither are the most durable on the market, but they’re also protected against certain defects by warranties

Cooling / Temperature

Foam mattresses typically retain more heat than hybrid or innerspring mattresses, but we don’t think the Tuft & Needle and Nolah sleep too warm.

The Tuft & Needle Adaptive foam is infused with cooling gel beads and graphite that draw heat away from the mattress surface. The Nolah AirFoam has a breathable, open-cell construction that improves airflow through the foam. It also has a breathable TENCEL mattress cover.

If we had to choose between the two, we think the Nolah is a more comfortable mattressfor hot sleepers.

Tuft & Needle Mattress Construction

Layer: Tuft & Needle
Cover Polyester Blend
Comfort Layer  Adaptive Foam
Support Layer High-Density Support Foam
Mattress Thickness  10”

The Tuft & Needle mattress is made with two layers of CertiPUR-US certified foam—one for comfort and one for support. The top layer is Tuft and Needle’s Adaptive foam, which is a proprietary blend that reminds us of latex combined with memory foam. It’s both responsive and contouring. Adaptive foam is also infused with graphite and gel beads, which work to evenly distribute your body heat across the foam, rather than letting it pool under your body.

At the base, a layer of high-density support foam keeps your body lifted “on top” of the mattress instead of sinking too far into the foam. Both foam layers are wrapped in a breathable fabric mattress cover.

Comfort Layer  AirFoam
Transitional Layer High-Resilience Foam
Support Layer High-Density Base Foam
Mattress Thickness  10”

The Nolah mattress is made with three layers of CertiPUR-US certified foam that serve various purposes. The first layer is AirFoam, which is molded with tiny air pockets that prevent the buildup of excess body heat. AirFoam also allows for enough sinkage to cradle the natural curves of your body.

Up next, a firmer layer of transition foam eases your body into the high-density polyfoam base layer. At 7” thick, this layer improves the stability and durability of the mattress. All three layers are wrapped in a soft fabric made with TENCEL, a sustainable wood-based substance that keeps you cool with its breathable composition.

Our Nolah vs. Tuft & Needle Final Review

Overall, these are both quality foam beds, but they each have distinct strengths and weaknesses. The firmer feel of the Tuft & Needle is better suited to average-weight back sleepers and lightweight stomach sleepers. It’s also the more affordable option. The slightly softer feel of the Nolah is best for side sleepers and lightweight back sleepers. It’s also highly responsive, which is great for combination sleepers.
