The Brooklyn Bedding Signature is an affordable hybrid mattress with a luxury feel that comes in three firmness levels. The original Nolah mattress is an all-foam bed that has the pressure-relieving qualities of memory foam without the deep sink or heat retention. The Signature is better for bigger bodies and firm or soft mattress fans. Couples who sleep together may prefer the Nolah thanks to its impressive motion isolation properties.
In this mattress comparison, we put these two popular bed-in-a-box mattresses head to head. Once you know how their construction, feel, price point, and policies compare, you can choose the bed that best fits your needs.
Comparing the Brooklyn Signature Mattress & Nolah Mattress
Differences
- Body types supported: The Brooklyn Signature’s supportive steel coils—especially those in the firm model—are more durable than base foam, so it’s better than the Nolah for those with heavyweight body types.
- Construction: The Nolah is an all-foam mattress and the Signature is a hybrid bed that pairs comfort foam with pocketed coils.
- Firmness and feel: Because the Signature comes in three firmness options and the Nolah just one, the Signature is better for sleepers who like firmer or softer mattresses. Both have a medium-firm option for people who enjoy the standard universal firmness level.
Similarities
- Excellent responsiveness: Nolah’s proprietary foams respond nearly instantaneously to pressure, as do the Signature’s innerspring coils. This fast response helps people who toss and turn sleep with fewer interruptions.
- Great for side sleepers: Both beds have thick foam comfort layers that cradle pressure points, cushioning the hips and shoulders of side sleepers. For more options, check out the best mattresses for side sleepers.
- Minimal heat retention: Both mattresses facilitate generous airflow, whisking away body heat and keeping sleepers cool and dry.
Best for: people with back pain, combination sleepers, and soft and firm mattress fans. We recommend this mattress for the following sleeper types: Financing options are available for this mattress. Who the Brooklyn Signature Mattress is Best For
Best For…
- People with back pain: The Signature’s three firmness options do an excellent job keeping the spine neutrally aligned in every sleeping position.
- Combination sleepers: The Signature’s springy coils and responsive polyfoams don’t make you feel stuck like you might on a bed with thick memory foam layers. Combination sleepers who toss and turn can move around easily on this bed. You can see more responsive mattresses on our list of best mattresses for combination sleepers.
- Soft and firm mattress fans: The Signature’s softest and firmest options are much softer and firmer than your average bed. These extremes suit people who like a cloud-like or ultra-firm feel.
May Not be Best For…
- People who like the memory foam “cradle”: The Signature mattress has conforming layers of foam, but there isn’t the dough-like cradle that beds with memory foam layers have.
- People who sit on the edges of their bed: The Signature doesn’t have the sturdiest edges. If you use the sides of your mattress to read, watch TV, or get ready in the morning, you might want something sturdier.

Who the Nolah Mattress is Best For
Best For…
- Side sleepers: The original Nolah mattress has a design made for side sleepers. Its foams remove pressure from the shoulders and hips, so side sleepers of every body weight (lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight) are likely to find a comforting, balanced feel.
- Couples who share the bed: The Nolah’s all-foam build absorbs motion, so you won’t wake up every time your partner moves. And because the Nolah’s medium-firm feel works for most sleepers, both you and your partner are likely to find comfort.
- People with back pain: The Nolah mattress minimizes pressure and delivers adequate spinal support for back, side, and stomach sleepers weighing less than 230 lbs. This combination leads us to recommend the Nolah to people with back pain.
May Not be Best For…
- Plus-size stomach sleepers: The best mattresses for stomach sleepers keep the hips from dipping in too far. While the Nolah is sufficiently supportive for most stomach sleepers, those weighing more than 230 lbs may need something firmer.
- Those who like a springy feel: Even though the Nolah is very easy to move around on, it does not have the bouncy surface of an innerspring mattress.

Signature Mattress vs. Nolah Mattress Performance Differences
Firmness / Feel
Brooklyn Signature Performance By Sleeping Position:
Body Type: | BACK SLEEPERS | STOMACH SLEEPERS | SIDE SLEEPERS |
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): | 4 | 3 | 2 |
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): | 5 | 3 | 3 |
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): | 4 | 2 | 4 |
Nolah Performance By Sleeping Position:
Body Type: | BACK SLEEPERS | STOMACH SLEEPERS | SIDE SLEEPERS |
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): | 5 | 4 | 5 |
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): | 4 | 3 | 5 |
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): | 3 | 2 | 4 |
1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent
A mattress’s firmness is one of the most important aspects to consider when finding the right bed. At Mattress Nerd, we measure firmness on a 1 to 10 scale, with 1 being downy soft and 10 being rock-hard. Most side sleepers require a softer firmness for adequate pressure relief, while back and stomach sleepers usually prefer a medium-firm or firm feel that offers comfort and support.
The Nolah is a medium-firm mattress, falling at a 6/10 on the firmness scale. Because Nolah’s top layer contains a proprietary foam that excels at pressure relief, this firmness works for side, back, and stomach sleepers who like a bed with average support and softness. However, we don’t recommend the Nolah for most heavyweight people, especially stomach sleepers. The all-foam build and feel are a touch too soft for plus-size comfort and durability.
The Brooklyn Signature comes in three firmnesses—soft, medium, and firm. The soft registers as a 4/10, or medium-soft mattress, the medium a 6/10, or medium-firm bed, and the firm an 8/10, which is quite firm. This variability in plushness suits sleepers of every sleeping position and body size—although it may not provide sufficient firmness along the torso for heavyweight stomach sleepers.
Motion Isolation
Have you ever felt your sleeping partner moving on the other side of the bed? That wiggle is known as motion transfer, and it’s not something you want when trying to get a good night’s sleep. While both the Nolah and Signature beds do a good job minimizing motion transfer, the Nolah outperforms the Signature. This is because all-foam beds like the Nolah don’t have coils, the material responsible for most motion transfer in mattresses.
Edge Support
Sturdy edges provide a safe ledge for sitting and getting into and out of bed, and they allow couples to spread out without worrying about rolling off. When we tested the Nolah and Signature mattresses in our lab, neither of them wowed us with their edge support. Both are stable enough that you can sleep along the edges but not strong enough for sitting comfortably.
While neither mattress excels here, the Signature’s firm version has the sturdiest edges thanks to the firmer foam found along the surface.
Pressure Relief
Pressure relief ensures that areas that stick out—like the shoulders and hips—don’t experience too much pressure. By sinking at these sensitive pressure points, beds with good pressure-relieving properties help side sleepers and people with joint pain sleep better.
Both the Nolah and Brooklyn Signature have the pressure-relieving feel we look for when recommending mattresses to side sleepers. Between the two, the Signature’s soft option delivers the best pressure relief thanks to ultra-soft foams that cradle sensitive areas.
Spine Alignment
To find the best mattress to keep your spine aligned, you should consider your sleeping position and body weight. For example, side sleepers need a softer surface that contours to their curves, stomach sleepers need a firm surface that limits hip sinkage, and back sleepers need a balance between softness and support to keep the spine’s natural S-curve. Also, the more you weigh, the firmer your mattress should be to ensure a healthy spine.
The Brooklyn Signature mattress is the overall winner for spinal alignment. Its three firmness options mean that most people can find a fit for their body type and sleep position. However, both beds do a good job supporting the spine for sleepers weighing less than 230 lbs.

Durability
The thicker and more supportive Brooklyn Bedding Signature is likely to last longer than the Nolah. The Signature firm model is the most durable thanks to higher density foams that resist body impressions and softening for longer than the Nolah or softer Signature models.
Temperature
The Brooklyn Signature sleeps cooler than the Nolah, although both beds facilitate airflow for cool sleep. The Signature’s 8” layer of breathable coils doesn’t trap heat and helps body heat move away from the mattress surface. If you frequently wake up with night sweats, consider looking into the best cooling mattresses.
Brooklyn Signature Mattress Construction

Support Layer | Ascension Pocketed Coils (8”) High-Density Flex Base Foam (0.25”) |
Mattress Thickness | 12″ |
The Signature Hybrid contains three layers of comfort foam atop a supportive base layer of thick, responsive pocketed coils. The composition of the top foam layers differs based on which firmness you choose—soft, medium, or firm. Each model provides excellent pressure relief and spinal alignment thanks to the variable foam layers and individually encased coil system. Because the Signature has airy coils and no memory foam, it sleeps cooler than most beds.

Every layer of the all-foam Nolah mattress supports cool sleep, pressure relief, and ease of movement. The top layer of Nolah AirFoam contains microscopic air pockets that contour to the body’s unique curves, no matter your sleeping position. These air pockets and proprietary foam transition layer adapt quickly to movement so that you won’t feel stuck. In addition, the Nolah foam mattress isolates motion so couples can enjoy deeper sleep.

Shipping and Returns for Brooklyn Bedding & Nolah
Brooklyn Bedding:
Brooklyn Bedding mattresses ship via FedEx for free to the 48 continental U.S. Customers in Canada, Alaska, and Hawaii pay a non-refundable shipping fee. Most beds arrive within five business days.
From the day you receive your new mattress, you have 120 nights to give it a test run. If you decide to return it, you can do so for a full refund after a 30-day waiting period. Brooklyn Bedding helps you find a local charity to donate the bed, after which you must provide proof of donation to receive a refund.
The Signature mattress comes with an industry-standard 10-year warranty. Mattress warranties cover defects like body indentations and crumbling or cracking foam layers. We recommend using a mattress protector as damage to the bed, such as spills or mold, may void the warranty.

Nolah:
Nolah only ships to customers living in the contiguous U.S. Because Nolah makes its beds to order, shipping time takes longer than most companies. You should receive your new bed in five to ten business days.
Because Nolah is a foam mattress, it has an odor when you first unbox it. This off-gassing scent comes from tiny particles escaping as the foam expands. Rest assured that Nolah uses CertiPUR-US certified foams, so this odor is nothing to be concerned about. It typically fades in a day or two.
Nolah offers a similar trial period as Brooklyn Bedding. During the 120-night trial, you may return your Nolah for a full refund after a 30-day break-in period. Contact Nolah during this window for instructions on how to have the bed donated or recycled.
Nolah mattresses have a generous Lifetime warranty covering similar defects as the Brooklyn Bedding warranty, including impressions deeper than 1”.
