If you’re shopping for a budget-friendly bed-in-a-box mattress, both the Brooklyn Bedding Bedding Hybrid and Purple mattresses are high-quality options to consider. In this mattress review, we’ll break down the distinct features and feel of each bed so you can pick the right mattress for your unique body type and sleep preferences.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid vs. Purple Overview

The Brooklyn Bedding Bedding Signature Hybrid is a hybrid mattress that’s available in three firmness levels: soft (4/10), medium (6/10), and firm (8/10). It features universally comfortable foams and a supportive coil core that provide a balanced feel. The Purple Original is Purple’s flagship mattress and the first to feature the company’s proprietary Purple Grid comfort layer with a gel-like, medium-firm (6.5/10) feel.

Who Should Choose the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Mattress?

  • All sleeper types: The Signature Hybrid comes in soft, medium, and firm versions, so you’re likely to find a feel that works for you regardless of your sleeping position or body type.
  • People who like a balanced feel: The Signature Hybrid combines proprietary foams with supportive coils, giving it a balanced feel. In other words, it’s more cushioning than an innerspring mattress, and it doesn’t hug or conform to the body as deeply as a memory foam mattress would.
  • Innerspring mattress fans: The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress provides pressure relief from foam layers but still has a bouncy feel and firm support of a traditional innerspring bed.

Who Should Choose the Purple Mattress?

  • People who normally sleep hot on all-foam mattresses: The mattress cover and the Purple Grid facilitate airflow throughout the mattress, making it much more breathable than comparable foam beds.
  • People with aches and pains: The Purple Grid offers even weight distribution across the surface of the mattress, gently buckling underneath pressure points, like the lower back and shoulders. This provides relief at pressure points while maintaining spinal alignment with supportive lift across the rest of the mattress surface.
  • Sleepers who want to try a gel-like feel: The Purple Grid’s gel material compresses at areas of high pressure while supporting the body elsewhere to create a weightless, floating sensation.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid vs. Purple: Top Similarities

  • Responsive: The coils in the Signature Hybrid add a bounciness to the mattress, and the responsive nature of the Purple grid allows it to offer above-average mobility for a foam mattress.
  • Temperature Regulating: Both beds offer a temperate sleeping surface for hot sleepers. The grid in the Purple aids in temperature regulation, and the coils and gel-infused foams in the Signature Hybrid help keep the bed cool.
  • Price: Although prices ebb and flow depending on sales and specials, each of these beds will typically fit similar budgets.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid vs. Purple: Top Differences

  • Firmness: The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid comes in three firmness level options: soft, medium, and firm. The Purple mattress only comes in medium-firm.
  • Sleeper types: The Purple mattress is best suited for lightweight and average-weight sleepers, but the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid bed can support sleepers of all body types.
  • Feel: The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid provides cushioning on the surface of the bed that’s balanced with firmer support from the underlying innerspring coil layer. The Purple bed also keeps you propped up on top of the mattress with gentle contouring but has a more unique, buoyant feel provided by the bed’s layers of gel-infused grid-designed foam.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid vs. Purple: Firmness & Feel Differences

When shopping for a new bed, one of the most important factors to consider is if the mattress’s firmness level and feel suit your body type and sleep position.

What’s the Firmness Of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid & Purple Mattresses?

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid comes in three firmness level options: soft, medium, and firm. On a scale of 1 to 10 where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest, these mattresses land at a 4/10, 6/10, and 8/10, respectively. Most sleepers will prefer the middle-of-the-road feel of the medium mattress, lightweight sleepers and side sleepers may prefer the softer model, while sleepers with a higher bodyweight may get the support they need on the firmer option.

The Purple mattress is a medium-firm bed, with a firmness level that measures at about 6.5/10 on our firmness scale. This firmness level allows the bed to gently give under heavier body parts and joints such as your hips and shoulders to prevent joint pain, while still providing enough pushback to keep your spine aligned

What Do the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid & Purple Mattresses Feel Like?

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid bed feels soft and cushioning when you first touch the surface of the bed, but you’ll feel supported by the layers underneath as your body sinks into the mattress.

The Purple’s grid-designed comfort layer has a gentle give beneath your shoulders, hips, and other pressure points. It also creates a floating sensation as you lay on the bed. This bed should keep most light and average-weight sleepers supported, but heavier sleepers and stomach sleepers may find themselves sinking too far into the bed for comfort.

What’s It Like to Sleep On the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid & Purple Mattresses?

Since the Brooklyn Bedding Signature comes in a variety of firmness options, it may suit a wider variety of sleeping positions. Side sleepers will be more comfortable on the soft mattress, while back and stomach sleepers will be more comfortable on the medium or firm mattress options, depending on your personal preference.

The Purple mattress has a balanced feel that will suit most back and side sleepers, but stomach sleepers may need a bed with a firmer level of support.

Lightweight (< 130 lbs): 53
Average-weight (130–230 lbs):523
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): 313

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Average-Weight Sleepers (130–230 lbs)

Both of these beds are ideal for average-weight back sleepers and are responsive enough to allow combination sleepers to switch sleeping positions easily throughout the night. Average weight stomach sleepers may have some luck with the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid, but neither of these beds is a great pick for the stomach sleeping position.

Likewise, each of these mattresses is adequate for average-weight side sleepers, but the best mattress for side sleepers typically has a bit more cushion than either of these beds.

Heavyweight Sleepers (> 230 lbs)

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid bed is the better pick for heavyweight sleepers all around. While heavyweight back and side sleepers could sleep pain-free on the Purple mattress, they may feel as if they are sinking too far into the grid comfort layer at the top of the bed for comfort.

Both the medium and firm Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid beds have enough stability to keep heavyweight back and side sleepers supported throughout the night and allow combination sleepers to move with ease. Heavyweight stomach sleepers may be able to get a good night’s sleep on the firm Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid model, but the Purple mattress doesn’t have sturdy enough support to keep them comfortable.

Lightweight Sleepers (< 130 lbs)

The Purple mattress is a solid pick for most lightweight sleepers. Back and side sleepers will be able to feel the pressure relief from the gel memory foam comfort layer while being propped in a healthy posture by the support layers underneath. Stomach sleepers may get enough support, but may benefit from a firmer bed depending on preference.

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid bed is also suitable for back and stomach sleepers with lighter body types, but lightweight side sleepers won’t get the cushioning they need to prevent pain in the hips and shoulders as they press into the mattress. Both mattresses are responsive enough to suit combination sleepers who toss and turn.

Differences In Mattress Construction

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress is a 11.5” tall hybrid bed built with coils and memory foam, while the Purple mattress is built with 9.5” of gel and foam.

Cover

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid comes with a lightly-cushioned quilted cover that stays cool overnight. Likewise, the Purple mattress also comes with a breathable mattress cover that is stretchy and smooth to the touch.

Comfort Layers

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid comes with two comfort layers that conform to your natural curves while keeping you lifted. The Purple mattress is built with a unique grid-designed gel foam layer that gently cradles the pressure points that press into the mattress as you sleep, such as the shoulders, hips, and knees. The Purple bed’s grid design also allows air to flow freely through this layer to move your body heat away from the bed.

Support Layers

There is a row of springy and durable innerspring coils layered on top of an inch of support foam at the base of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid. The Purple bed is built with a base layer of dense polyfoam to keep you supported.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid vs. Purple Mattress Performance Ratings & Differences

Temperature

Both beds offer great cooling in their own right, but the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid has a slight edge over the Purple bed because of its hybrid construction. The Purple is one of the most temperature-neutral foam mattresses on the market because the air channels in the comfort layer grid facilitate airflow. It also has a cover that aids in breathability. The Signature Hybrid has coils to enhance airflow, gel-infused foams, and a cooling cover for temperature control. Hot sleepers may also want to check out our list of best cooling mattresses.

Motion Transfer

Motion isolation is an important factor for couples, and both of these beds perform well in this category. Though both are easy to move around on thanks to the Signature Hybrid’s coil layer and responsive foams and the Purple Original’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Grid, both transfer little motion from one side of the bed to the other.

Edge Support

Both mattresses have decent edge support. If you weigh less than 230 lbs, you should feel comfortable sitting along the edges of these beds. However, individuals with a heavier bodyweight (>230 lbs) may notice some sagging near the sides of the bed.

Pressure Relief

Both beds offer great pressure relief, but the right mattress for you depends on your body type. The Purple Grid conforms somewhat close to your body because it buckles where the most pressure is applied, but heavyweight sleepers feel as if they’re sinking too far into the bed. In the Signature Hybrid, the top layers of foam offer a conforming feel and good pressure relief, as long as the firmness level chosen is appropriate for the sleeper’s body type and sleeping position.

Pain Relief

Whether a bed relieves or prevents pain depends on how well your bed supports your body type and sleep position. Both the Signature Hybrid and the Purple Original have a nice balance of support and conforming for a variety of sleeper types. We recommend the soft Signature Hybrid for lightweight and strict side sleepers, the medium Signature Hybrid or the Purple for average-weight sleepers and back sleepers. The firm Signature bed is best for heavyweight sleepers and strict stomach sleepers.

Durability

The Purple bed is a step ahead of other all-foam mattresses when it comes to durability. Although it doesn’t have durable coils, its grid comfort layer won’t soften and form impressions as quickly over time. We expect it to last 5 to 10 years before you start feeling signs of wear. The Signature Hybrid’s lightly responsive foam layers and supportive base layer of coils put it on par with other hybrid beds with this pricing, and we expect it to last 7 to 10 years.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid & Purple FAQs

Do I need to flip my Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid or Purple mattress?

You should not flip the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid or Purple mattress. Both beds are built with firm support layers at the bottom of the mattress, and pressure-relieving comfort layers located on top of the bed closer to your body. Flipping the mattress could cause an uncomfortable sleeping experience.

Is the Purple mattress good for side sleepers?

The Purple mattress is built with a grid-designed gel comfort layer that contours to the shape of your natural curves. This can help lightweight and average-weight side sleepers sleep pain-free since this layer will cradle the hips and shoulders and redistribute your weight along the length of the bed.

How long will the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid last?

Built with durable materials such as dense, CertiPUR-US certified memory foam and individually-wrapped innerspring coils, the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid should keep you comfortable and supported for about a decade before you need to replace it. The warranty for this bed also lasts 10 years in case any issues arise.

Our Final Take

If you simply want a comfortable, neutral hybrid feel that doesn’t scream “memory foam,” go with the Signature Hybrid. If you like the idea of a floating sensation or gel-like feel, give the Purple Original a try. Shoppers who are on a strict budget will save more money with Brooklyn Bedding’s frequent discounts, but both beds are reasonably priced given their high-quality constructions.

The other factor to consider is your size. Since the Signature Hybrid comes in soft, medium, and firm versions, just about any sleeper can find a firmness level that works for them. The Purple Original’s medium-firm feel is best for average-weight back and side sleepers and lightweight sleepers who like a firmer, lifted feel to their mattress.
