How Does the Bloom Mattress Feel?

Firmness

The Bloom is available in two heights (14” and 11”) with corresponding firmness levels: medium-soft and medium-firm (4.5/10 and 6/10 on the firmness scale). The taller version (14”) is the softer of the two. We recommend this firmness option for most side sleepers. The 11” version has a medium firmness that could also work for average-weight side sleepers and most back sleepers

Temperature

One of the Brooklyn Bloom’s best features is its ability to regulate temperature. Latex is a naturally cooling material, and Brooklyn Bedding aerates the latex layer with holes to enhance its breathability. The coil base layer is also breathable, and the wool and cotton cover is moisture-wicking

For other top picks for hot sleepers, see what beds made our best cooling mattresses list.

Support By Sleeping Positions

Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  5 3 5
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): 4 2 5
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  3 1 4

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Mattress support influences its durability, edge support, and the ability to accommodate folks with heavier body types. We’re pleased to report that the Brooklyn Bloom Hybrid performs well in every support category.

Both latex foam and pocketed coils are known for their longevity. The Bloom’s construction makes it likely to last at least seven years for the average consumer without significant changes in its feel or comfort.

Edge support is essential for those with mobility problems or people who like to spread out across the entirety of their mattress. After all, an unsupportive mattress edge can leave sleepers feeling as if they’ll roll right off their bed in the middle of the night. Thanks to extra-durable coils surrounding the perimeter and the buoyancy of latex, the Bloom has sturdy edges.

When it comes to supporting bigger bodies (which we define as over 230 lbs), the resilience of both latex and innerspring coils makes the Bloom a suitable option. However, because the Bloom is softer than most beds, we only recommend it for heavyweight side sleepers.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers need a bed that evenly distributes their body weight, cradling their lower back and supporting their spine. The Bloom Hybrid’s softer-than-average feel helps lightweight and average-weight people find a supportive and comfortable feel. However, it’s too soft for heavyweight back sleepers, who may find themselves feeling stuck in the plush surface.

For more of our favorite choices for back sleepers, check out our list of the best mattresses for back sleepers.

Side Sleepers

The Bloom conforms to the body more closely than most latex hybrid mattresses. The extra softness of the Bloom’s thick cotton and wool comfort layer paired with pressure-relieving latex makes this a great mattress for side sleepers. Lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight side sleepers should find an adequate cushion for pressure points without too much sinkage.

To see other pressure-relieving beds, head over to our best mattresses for side sleepers compilation.

Stomach Sleepers

The best mattresses for stomach sleepers provide exceptional support to prevent the torso and hips from sinking downward. Without sufficient lumbar support, stomach sleepers are prone to developing lower back pain

If you’re a stomach sleeper of any body type (lightweight, average-weight and heavyweight), your hips will likely sink too deep into the Brooklyn Bloom mattress. Instead, look for a firm mattress.

Combination Sleepers

Combination sleepers are more prone to frequent tossing and turning than solo-position sleepers. Latex and coils are both responsive materials, which means they quickly respond to pressure and make it easy to move around.

The Bloom’s responsiveness is helpful for lightweight and average-weight combination sleepers. Heavyweight combination sleepers will fare better on a firmer, more supportive mattress. Take a look at our list of the best mattresses for combination sleepers for more options.

Who is the Brooklyn Bloom Mattress Best For?

Couples

A bed with excellent motion isolation will prevent disturbances throughout the night, which can help couples sleep soundly even when one needs to get in and out of bed at night.

The Bloom Hybrid is a very bouncy mattress thanks to the pocketed coils and natural latex comfort layer, so you will feel some motion transfer across the bed if you’re a light sleeper. But if you and your partner are both deep sleepers, the bed’s bounciness could be a non-issue. It’s even a helpful feature for sex.

For mattresses with excellent motion isolation, see our list of best mattresses for couples.

Back Pain

The Bloom Hybrid is a good choice for most back and side sleepers with back pain. The top layer of plush cotton and wool adds a touch of softness, while the latex foam contours to the body without allowing too much sinkage. The result is even weight distribution and superb spinal alignment in these sleeping positions. But if you’re a stomach sleeper or weight over 230 lbs, you should look for a firmer mattress.

Construction: What’s Under the Surface?

The Bloom Hybrid is an eco-friendly mattress that offers the breathability and comfort of natural materials. The soft top layer combines with the supportive layers below for a bed that’s excellent for back sleepers and side sleepers. The natural latex contours without trapping heat, delivering both pressure relief and temperature regulation. Finally, the pocketed coils provide a springy feel and support for all body types.

Layer #1: Quilted Joma Wool and Organic Cotton Cover (1.25”)

A thick topper quilted with naturally breathable wool and cotton creates a cloudlike feel. Wool has moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating properties that keep hot sleepers from overheating.

Layer #2: Natural Talalay Latex Comfort Layer (3”)

Aerated Talalay latex foam has a buoyant feel that minimizes pressure and evenly distributes body weight. This latex layer has a medium firmness that contours around your body without the deep-hugging feel of memory foam. Brooklyn Bedding uses all-natural, eco-friendly latex sourced from rubber trees.

Layer #3: Ascension X Pocketed Coils (8”)

Individually wrapped coils move independently, providing gentle support along the spine and compressing at areas like the hips and shoulders. These coils bring responsive springiness while minimizing motion transfer. The also improve airflow through the mattress.

Layer #4: High-Density Base Foam (1”)

A thin layer of ultra-durable foam keeps the springs in place and helps increase the mattress’s lifespan.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

The Brooklyn Bedding Bloom Hybrid mattress is available on Brooklyn Bedding’s website and showrooms across Arizona. Every mattress ships free via FedEx to the continental USA, with a fee to Canada, Hawaii, or Alaska.

The Bloom Hybrid is a bed-in-a-box mattress, which describes how the bed is packaged and shipped. When you receive your new bed, carry it to your room and set it on its bed frame, box spring, or foundation before unboxing it. Once you unroll it, it might take a few hours to expand to its full size.

There should be minimal off-gassing when you unbox the Bloom—a term referencing the chemical smell that exudes from previously packaged foam mattresses. If you detect the harmless off-gassing smell, place the bed in a well-ventilated area and allow it to “breathe” for around 24 hours.

Warranty

The Brooklyn Bedding mattress warranty lasts 10 years, which starts on the day the bed is purchased. A 10-year warranty is the standard coverage length for new mattresses. Brooklyn Bedding covers the cost to repair or replace your mattress for covered defects during this time. To comply with the policy, customers should keep the bed on a properly supportive surface like a platform bed or supportive slatted bed frame.

Check this out for more info: Brooklyn Bedding Warranty

Trial Period & Returns

Once the Bloom arrives at your house, you’ll have 120 nights to determine whether the bed is right for you. If you don’t like the bed during the 120-night sleep trial, simply call or email Brooklyn Bedding to start the return process.

Keep in mind that Brooklyn Bedding won’t accept returns during the 30-day break-in period. Brooklyn Bedding works with you to have a local charity or donation center pick up the mattress, after which you’ll receive a full refund.

Note: Mattresses purchased through Amazon may have a different trial period and return policy.

Both the Aurora and Bloom are hybrid mattress models, but their design and feel are notably different. The Brooklyn Aurora contains traditional materials—including memory foam, polyfoam, and innerspring coils—for a feel that’s like that of a high-end hotel mattress. The Bloom Hybrid utilizes more natural materials—like cotton, wool, and latex—in addition to coils and a minimal foam layer.

The Aurora comes in three firmness levels, with the firmer models better than the Bloom for stomach sleepers and people who like a firm bed. The Bloom sleeps cooler and contains more environmentally friendly materials.

Both the Signature and Bloom are hybrid models, but thanks to different comfort layer materials, they suit different people. The Bloom Hybrid is softer and uses primarily natural materials. The Signature is made using conventional materials and comes in soft, medium, and firm versions.

We recommend the Bloom Hybrid to shoppers wanting a natural bed with excellent pressure relief and the Signature for budget-conscious shoppers who enjoy a firmer feel. The Bloom sleeps slightly cooler than the Signature, so it’s great for people who sleep hot.

The Brooklyn Bowery Hybrid has the lowest pricing of any Brooklyn Bedding hybrid mattress. With a medium-firm feel and minimal comfort layers, the Bowery is best for back and stomach sleepers. The Bloom Hybrid is softer and more pressure-relieving than the Bowery, so it’s better for side sleepers, people with joint pain, and lightweight people.

Another difference between these beds is that the Bloom is made from primarily natural materials, while the Bowery contains traditional bedding materials. Both beds sleep cooler than your average hybrid.

The Bloom is cooler and more responsive than the Casper mattress, thanks to its supportive steel coils. But if you sleep with a partner, you may want to consider the Casper due to the superior motion isolation offered by an all-foam bed.

Compared to the softer Bloom Hybrid, we recommend the Bear for stomach sleepers and people who like a firm sleeping surface.

The Bloom Hybrid is made from natural materials and sleeps even cooler than the Bear. Because of its outstanding pressure-relieving properties, people who like a cloud-like feel should opt for the Bloom over the Bear.

People who Toss and Turn Hot Sleepers

The Purple mattress has a unique hybrid construction that uses the proprietary Purple Smart Grid atop layers of foam for a feel that’s akin to floating. Both the Bloom and the Purple mattresses excel at evenly distributing weight which is good news for side sleepers and people with back or joint pain.

Another similarity is that both beds keep people cool. However, the Bloom has a more traditional cloud-like contouring when compared to the floating sensation of the Purple.

Haven’t made a decision yet? Check out these comparisons:

Pros/Cons

Pros

  • Natural materials: Most of the materials in the Bloom are 100% natural, including organic cotton, Joma wool, and latex. Not only are these materials eco-friendly, but they’re non-toxic and hypoallergenic.
  • Doesn’t retain much heat: The cotton, wool, latex, and coils in the Bloom are all materials known to promote temperature regulation and minimize overheating.
  • Exceptional pressure relief: The Bloom’s soft top layers provide pressure relief to high impact areas like the hips and shoulders.

Cons

  • Softer than average: The Bloom—particularly the 14” medium-soft version—is softer than the average hybrid mattress. As such, some sleepers will prefer a firmer bed with more support.
  • High price point: At $1,999 for a Queen-size, the Bloom Hybrid is less affordable than the other hybrid mattresses on the market. Take a look at the best affordable mattresses for some budget-friendly options.
  • Not for stomach sleepers: The Bloom is too soft to properly support the hips and midsection of stomach sleepers.

What’s the Bottom Line?

The Bloom Hybrid excels in nearly every category, ranging from edge support to temperature neutrality and pressure relief. If you like natural materials and have a sizable budget, the Bloom could be a great choice.

It’s a solid pick for shoppers who value products made in the U.S. and for most side and back sleepers. However, it’s not our top pick for stomach sleepers, light sleepers who share the bed, or people who like a firm mattress.
