Saatva vs. Layla Mattress Comparison

Here’s everything you need to know to decide if the Layla or the Saatva, two of the most popular mattresses on the market, is right for you.

Comparing Saatva Mattress & Layla Mattress

Other than the fact that they’re two of the most popular mattresses out there, the Layla and the Saatva don’t have much in common. The Layla is a flippable memory foam mattress with a soft side and a firm side. The Saatva is a luxury innerspring mattress that’s available in three different firmness levels

If you love memory foam, you’ll love the body-hugging of the Layla. If you like a mix of conforming and responsiveness, you’ll enjoy the lifted feel of the Saatva. In this Saatva vs. Layla mattress comparison, we explore these beds’ similarities, differences, constructions, and more. By the end of the article, you’ll have all the information you need to make a confident decision about which is the best mattress for you.

Differences

  • Feel: The Layla has a soft memory foam feel, and the Saatva feels like a traditional innerspring bed with a little plushness on top. Check out the best pillow top mattresses for those similar to the Saatva’s feel.
  • Value: The Layla is markedly more affordable than the Saatva. However, the Saatva has very reasonable pricing given its sophisticated design and strong performance.
  • Firmness Options: The Layla offers a soft side and a firm side in one construction, while the Saatva is available in soft, medium, and firm options, so if you’re someone who wants a truly middle-of-the-road setting, the Saatva is your best bet.
  • Cover: The cover on the Layla is soft and breezy. The cover on the Saatva is tufted and quilted with polyfoam, lending to a pillow-top feel that resembles hotel mattresses.

Similarities

  • Versatility: Both mattresses suit a range of different body types, but they achieve this in different ways. The Layla is flippable, with one firm side and one soft side, and the Saatva is available in three firmness options. See other top picks for the best customizable mattresses.
  • Cooling: Both beds have active cooling features, but the Layla’s copper-infused foam is best for people who sleep temperature-neutral to warm, and the ample airflow through the Saatva’s innerspring core is best for people who regularly sleep hot.

Who the Layla Mattress is Best For

Best For…

  • People who want a classic memory foam feel: The Layla offers a classic memory foam feel that will let you sink “into” the mattress.
  • Lightweight and average-weight sleepers: The firmness levels on the Layla are best for people who weigh no more than 230 lbs.
  • Budget shoppers: The Layla is flippable, has cooling features, and has a signature memory foam feel for less than $1,200 in all sizes. See the best affordable mattresses for our favorite budget-friendly picks.

May Not be Best For…

  • Plus-size sleepers: The firm side of the Layla simply isn’t supportive and firm enough for people who weigh more than 230 lbs.
  • People who like bounce in their mattress: The Layla’s main selling point is its pressure relief, and its all-foam design absorbs all bounce and movement.

Who the Saatva Mattress is Best For

Best For…

  • All sleepers, regardless of weight: The Saatva comes in three firmness levels (Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm), meaning that almost any body type can find an option that’s suitable for their body.
  • Value shoppers: Made with a sophisticated design and sold with a first-class shopping experience, the Saatva has exceptional value relative to its cost.
  • Hot sleepers: Two layers of coils give the bed a double dose of airflow, making it ideal for people who regularly struggle with sleeping hot.

May Not be Best For…

  • People who love memory foam: The Saatva has a very thin memory foam layer for pressure relief, but it isn’t enough to give memory foam lovers the sinking, viscous sensation they’re looking for.
  • Couples: While the Saatva distills motion better than other innerspring beds, sensitive sleepers will experience noticeable movement and disturbances because of its dual-coil design. If you sleep with a partner, see the best mattresses for couples.

Deciding Between Saatva & Layla

Firmness / Feel

There’s little in common between the Layla and the Saatva when it comes to feel. In short, if you want a memory foam feel and like a “sinking in” sensation, you’ll like the Layla. If you like light bounce and an overall lifted sensation, you’ll like the Saatva.

With regard to firmness, your decision should come down to your personal preference and your body type. Only the firmest Saatva option is supportive enough for heavyweight sleepers, but average-weight and lightweight sleepers can choose between having two firmnesses in one with the Layla or selecting a dedicated firmness level (Soft or Luxury Firm) with the Saatva. If you need a super-supportive mattress, see the best mattresses for heavy people.

Saatva Performance By Sleeping Position:
Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  5 5 3
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): 5 5 4
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  4 3 4
Layla Performance By Sleeping Position:
Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  4 3 4
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): 3 3 4
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  2 2 3

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Motion Isolation

Saatva’s innerspring design and two layers of coils mean that motion transfer is high across the mattress surface, so you’re likely to feel a partner moving around. However, it isn’t as bouncy as a traditional innerspring bed, since the transitional layer of microcoils is designed to absorb some movement from the thicker base layer of springs.

The Layla’s all-foam construction helps it absorb almost all the bounce and movement created by a partner getting in and out of bed or changing positions.

Edge Support

Without a doubt, the Saatva offers better edge support regardless of the firmness setting you choose. The Layla’s all-foam construction makes it prone to sagging along the edges. The Saatva, which has a dedicated layer of high-density perimeter foam in addition to two layers of coils that push back against gravity and body weight, is a much better option if you want to use the full surface area of the bed.

Pressure Relief

Regardless of your body type or sleeping position, certain parts of your body will come into contact with the mattress throughout the night, which may cause soreness and aches from pressure points. The key to pressure relief is finding a mattress that will allow certain parts of your body to sink in while the rest of the body remains supported.

As a general recommendation, the soft side of the Layla and the soft version of the Saatva are best for lightweight and strict side sleepers. Average-weight sleepers and back sleepers can choose between the firm side of the Layla and the Luxury Firm Saatva. Most stomach sleepers will find the most appropriate pressure relief for their style of sleeping on the Firm Saatva, which adds lift with just a hint of softness from its thin layer of memory foam.

Spine Alignment

Think of spinal alignment like proper posture; it’s just as important when you’re awake as it is when you’re sleeping. To maintain a healthy spinal alignment when sleeping, you should choose a mattress that encourages your body to stay in an even plane, and this will vary based on your sleeping position and weight.

Strict back sleepers need a medium-firm or firm mattress, so the firm side of the Layla and the Luxury Firm or Firm Saatva options can fit the bill. Side sleepers need give at the hips and shoulders for the spine to fall into proper alignment, so the soft Layla and the Soft Saatva are best. Strict stomach sleepers should opt for the firm side of the Layla or the Firm Saatva, which will lift the hips up to prevent the lower back from bowing.

Durability

Durability is all about design and the quality of the materials in a mattress. The Saatva has five layers of high-quality materials, including two layers of stable coils, which encourage excellent longevity and support in the bed.

From the Layla, on the other hand, you can expect a lifespan of about seven years, which is on par with other memory foam mattresses. This is because all-foam beds are more prone to sagging, indentations, and wear than hybrid and innerspring beds.

Temperature

Both beds have active cooling materials, but the Saatva is going to suit people who sleep hot on a regular basis much better. With dual layers of coils, the bed has ample airflow to keep you cool at night.

The Layla is more breathable than the average memory foam mattress, thanks to the copper-infusion of its top foam; we expect it to keep people who normally sleep warm on foam mattresses temperature neutral, but it won’t give a hot sleeper a truly cool night’s sleep. Saatva Mattress Construction

saatva classic mattress construction
Cover 3” Euro-top organic cotton cover
Comfort Layer  Memory foam
Transitional Layer Microcoils

Active wire lumbar support

Support Layer Bonnell coils

High-density polyfoam edge support

Mattress Thickness  11.5” or 14.5”

The Euro-top cover serves as the main comfort layer in the Saatva, giving the bed a plush feel when you initially lie down. Underneath this is a thin layer of high-density memory foam, which adds just a little more pressure relief to the mattress.

Unlike most innerspring and hybrid mattresses, the Saatva has two layers of coils. The microcoils that sit just beneath the comfort portion of the bed help minimize motion transfer and add more lift and breathability to the bed. These are followed by an active wire layer, which Saatva claims helps give you enhanced back support in every sleeping position.

At the base of the Saatva are 13-gauge support coils, which give the bed its signature bouncy, durable feel. These are surrounded by a layer of high-density polyfoam to encourage even better edge support around the mattress’s edges.

Layla Mattress Construction

layla mattress construction
Cover Polyester-blend cover with handles
Comfort Layer  Copper-infused memory foam
Transitional Layer Convoluted polyfoam (soft side)
Support Layer High-density polyfoam
Mattress Thickness  10”

For a flippable mattress, the Layla has a surprisingly simple construction. There are handles sewn onto the side of the mattress to make flipping easy. Both sides of the mattress feature copper-infused memory foam in the top layer in different thicknesses. The soft side has a 3” layer of memory foam, and the firm side has a 1” layer of the material. The memory foam is infused with copper, which helps draw heat away from the body.

On the soft side, there’s a transition layer of convoluted polyfoam for added softness and to prevent sleepers from coming into contact with the bed’s firm core. The firm side of the Layla does not have a transitional layer.

Both sides of the bed share the same support core, which is a 4.5” layer of high-density polyfoam. This provides a stable base for both sides.

Layla Hybrid

The Layla Hybrid shares a flippable design in common with the Layla, but the firmness levels it offers are different (medium-soft and medium-firm). The core construction is a coil layer instead of high-density polyfoam, helping it sleeper cooler and possibly making it more durable.

Our Final Take

The simple answer to which could be the right new mattress for you? If you like bounce and the feel of a traditional innerspring bed, go with the Saatva. If you love memory foam, go with the Layla

With either, you’ll have your choice of firmness levels, the main difference being that you’ll need to decide on a setting beforehand with the Saatva, while the flippable nature of the Layla allows you to choose between two firmness levels at any time. If feel isn’t a determining factor to you, next up is temperature. If you sleep hot, the Saatva’s dual-coil construction will keep you cool.
