Who Should Choose the Saatva Mattress?

  • All body types: The Saatva comes in three firmness levels ranging from plush to firm, and is built with two layers of sturdy innerspring support, so it can suit virtually any body type.
  • Hot sleepers: Made of cooling  materials such as innerspring coils, breathable cotton and New Zealand wool, the Saatva is designed to stay temperature-neutral all year round.
  • Those who prefer an innerspring feel: The Saatva’s foam layers provide pressure relief, but the bed still has a bouncy and responsive innerspring feel that keeps you lifted on top of the bed.

Who Should Choose the Layla Mattress?

  • People who want a classic memory foam feel: As you lay on the Layla mattress, you’ll gently sink into the surface of the bed as the mattress cradles your curves.
  • Lightweight and average-weight sleepers: This mattress provides ample support for sleepers under 230 lbs, but heavyweight sleepers will likely prefer a mattress with firmer support.

Saatva Mattress vs. Layla Mattress: Top Similarities

  • Versatility: Both mattresses suit a range of different body types, but they achieve this in different ways. The Layla is flippable, with one firm side and one soft side, and the Saatva is available in three firmness options. See other top picks for the best customizable mattresses.
  • Cooling: Both beds have active cooling features, but the Layla’s copper-infused foam is best for people who sleep temperature-neutral to warm, and the ample airflow through the Saatva’s innerspring core is best for people who regularly sleep hot.
  • Firm edge support: Both of these beds have sturdy edge support, meaning you can take up the whole span of the mattress or sit on the side without worrying about slipping off the edge.

Saatva Mattress vs. Layla Mattress: Top Differences

  • Feel: The Layla has a soft, fluffy memory foam feel, and the Saatva feels more  like a traditional innerspring bed with a little plushness on top. Check out the best pillow top mattresses for those similar to the Saatva’s feel.
  • Price: The Layla is markedly more affordable than the Saatva. However, the Saatva has very reasonable pricing given its sophisticated luxury design and strong performance.
  • Firmness Options: The Layla offers a soft side and a firm side in one construction, while the Saatva is available in soft, medium, and firm options.

Saatva Mattress vs. Layla Mattress: Firmness & Feel Differences

If you want a memory foam feel and like a “sinking in” sensation, you’ll like the Layla. If you like light bounce and an overall lifted sensation, you’ll like the Saatva.

What’s the Firmness Of the Saatva Mattress & Layla Mattresses?

Both mattresses have multiple firmness options. The Saatva comes in three firmness levels for you to choose from: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm—which feels like a medium firm bed, and Firm. The Layla mattress combines two firmness options in a single bed— you just flip the bed to experience a different firmness level on each side. The Layla has a “soft side” that feels medium-soft, and a “firm” side that feels medium-firm, similar to the Saatva mattress’s “Luxury-firm” option.

What Do the Saatva Mattress & Layla Mattresses Feel Like?

The Saatva bed has a sturdy feel that keeps you lifted on top of the bed rather than sinking into it. The Saatva mattress also is built with innerspring coils that give the bed a responsive bounce as you move around on the surface. The Layla mattress, on the other hand, has a doughy, memory foam feel. The top of the bed will hug your curves so you feel as if you are gently sinking into the surface of the bed as you sleep.

What’s It Like to Sleep On the Saatva Mattress & Layla Mattresses?

The Saatva mattress provides a balance of support and comfort that makes it ideal for back and stomach sleepers of all sizes, but side sleepers may find a bed that provides deeper pressure relief more comfortable. The Layla mattress, on the other hand, provides plush comfort that side sleepers need, but doesn’t have the firm support necessary to keep heavier back and stomach sleepers comfortable.

Average-Weight Sleepers (130–230 lbs)

The Saatva is a great pick across the board for average-weight sleepers. Average-weight combination, back and stomach sleepers will stay supported thanks to the bed’s two firm rows of responsive innerspring coils, while the pillow top surface layer provides comfort and gently conforms to the shape of your body. Side sleepers also will have enough support on the Saatva bed—but the Plush Soft option will help shoulders and hips get the pressure-relieving cushioning that you need to stay comfortable in this sleeping position.

Back and stomach sleepers may get enough support on the Layla bed, but this bed is on the softer side to support average-weight sleepers in those sleeping positions. This bed’s deep plush feel will suit side sleepers, however, who need extra give around their joints.

Heavyweight Sleepers (> 230 lbs)

The luxury firm and firm Saatva mattresses provide a sturdy level of support to keep heavyweight sleepers propped up in a neutral and healthy posture throughout the night in every sleeping position. The firm Saatva bed will help back and stomach sleepers sleep with a correct spinal alignment, while the luxury firm model will provide the plush comfort to keep side sleepers comfortable. The responsive springy coils of this mattress will make this mattress a great pick for heavyweight combination sleepers to move easily across the surface of the bed as well.

Heavyweight sleepers should steer clear of the Layla mattress in favor of a bed that has firmer support.

Lightweight Sleepers (< 130 lbs)

The plush and luxury-firm options offer enough support and plush comfort for lightweight back and stomach sleepers, but lightweight side sleepers should opt for a bed with a softer sleeping surface to relieve pressure from the hip and shoulder that press into the bed. The Saatva mattress also works well for combination sleepers as long as side sleeping isn’t the predominant sleeping position.

While the Layla bed may feel too plush to average- or heavyweight sleepers, this foam bed is well suited for sleepers that weigh less than 130 lbs in all sleeping positions. The memory foam surface provides the pressure relief you need. Stomach and back sleepers should opt for the firm side of the mattress, while side sleepers can flip it over to the soft side.

Differences In Mattress Construction

The Saatva mattress is a hybrid bed built with a combination of innerspring coil and foam and you can choose a mattress height of either 11.5” or 14.5.” The Layla mattress is a flippable, all-foam bed built with a firm support foam core sandwiched between copper-infused memory foam layers.

Cover

The Euro-top cover serves as the main comfort layer in the Saatva. This plush layer is sewn into the cover of the mattress, giving the bed a gentle plush feel when you initially lie down.

The Layla mattress has two cover layers since the bed was designed to be flipped. Both sides of the mattress feature copper-infused memory foam in the top layer in different thicknesses—the soft side has a 3” layer of memory foam, and the firm side has a 1” layer of the material.

Comfort Layers

Underneath the Saatva bed’s Euro-style pillow topper is a thin layer of high-density memory foam, which adds just a little more pressure relief to the mattress.

On the soft side of the Layla mattress, there’s a transition layer of convoluted polyfoam for added softness and to prevent sleepers from coming into contact with the bed’s firm core. The firm side of the Layla does not have a transitional layer.

Support Layers

The Saatva has two layers of coils that give the bed a durable, bouncy feel. These are surrounded by a layer of high-density polyfoam to encourage even better edge support around the mattress’s edges.

Both sides of the Layla bed share the same support core, which is a 4.5” layer of high-density polyfoam. This provides a stable base for both sides.

Saatva Mattress vs. Layla Mattress Performance Ratings & Differences

Temperature

Both beds are built with cooling materials, but the Saatva is going to suit people who sleep hot on a regular basis much better. With dual layers of coils, the bed has ample airflow to keep you cool at night.

The Layla is more breathable than the average memory foam mattress, thanks to the copper-infusion of its top foam. We expect it to keep people who normally sleep warm on foam mattresses temperature neutral, but it won’t give a hot sleeper a truly cool night’s sleep. See the best cooling mattresses for more.

Motion Transfer

The Saatva’s two layers of coils mean that motion transfer is high across the mattress surface, so you’re likely to feel a partner moving around. However, it isn’t as bouncy as a traditional innerspring bed, since the transitional layer of microcoils is designed to absorb some movement from the thicker base layer of springs.

The Layla’s all-foam construction helps it absorb almost all the bounce and movement created by a partner getting in and out of bed or changing positions. If you are a light sleeper with an active partner, the Layla, or another all foam bed, would be your best bet.

Edge Support

The Saatva offers better edge support regardless of the firmness setting you choose. The Layla’s all-foam construction makes it prone to sagging along the edges. The Saatva, which has a dedicated layer of high-density perimeter foam in addition to two layers of coils that push back against gravity, is a much better option if you want to use the full surface area of the bed.

Pressure Relief

Regardless of your body type or sleeping position, certain parts of your body will press against the surface of the mattress throughout the night, which may cause soreness and aches from these pressure points. The key to pressure relief is finding a mattress that will allow certain parts of your body to sink in while the rest of the body remains supported.

As a general recommendation, the soft side of the Layla and the soft version of the Saatva are best for lightweight and strict side sleepers. Average-weight sleepers and back sleepers can choose between the firm side of the Layla and the Luxury Firm Saatva. Most stomach sleepers will find the most appropriate pressure relief for their style of sleeping on the Firm Saatva, which adds lift with just a hint of softness from its thin layer of memory foam.

Pain Relief

Choosing a bed that has the right amount of support and pressure relief for your body type and sleep position will determine whether or not it will help relieve pain. Generally, if you have a heavier body type or a sleeping position that requires a firmer level of support, the Saatva could help you sleep pain free. If your priority is getting deep pressure relief for sore joints, then the Layla would be a better choice for pain relief.

Durability

Durability is determined by the design and the quality of the materials in a mattress. The Saatva is made with five layers of high-quality materials, including two layers of stable coils, which encourage excellent longevity and support in the bed.

From the Layla, on the other hand, you can expect a lifespan of about seven years, which is on par with other memory foam mattresses. Despite the fact that this bed is made with high quality materials, all-foam beds are more prone to sagging, indentations, and wear than hybrid mattresses.

Our Final Take

If you have a heavier body type, or like bounce and the feel of a traditional innerspring bed, go with the Saatva. If you love memory foam or weigh less than 130 pounds, go with the Layla. Two other factors to consider are temperature and firmness options: the Saatva sleeps cooler, but the Layla allows you to flip the bed to switch firmness options whenever you please.

Saatva Mattress & Layla Mattress FAQs

Where are Layla and Saatva mattresses made?

Both Saatva and Layla mattresses are made in the U.S. This means that these companies have better oversight into quality control, have faster shipping times, and help create jobs in the United States. They also have better control over environmental standards than if the beds were made abroad.

Do any stores sell Saatva or Layla mattresses?

Saatva and Layla do not sell their mattresses through any third-party sites or stores. Their only physical Saatva store is found in Manhattan, New York, and Layla sells their bed exclusively online. By cutting out the middleman, both brands are able to offer higher quality beds at lower costs.

How long do the Layla and Saatva mattresses last?

The average all-foam mattress lasts between five and seven years—but by flipping your mattress regularly, you may be able to get a few more years of use out of it. The Saatva is a hybrid bed, so it should last between seven and 10 years.
