What Type of Mattress Is The Saatva HD?

The Saatva HD is a hybrid mattress made by Saatva, a mattress brand that’s become well known for offering a wide range of high-quality beds and a shopping experience that goes above and beyond to please the consumer. To learn more about hybrid mattresses, check out our article on memory foam vs. hybrid mattresses. Saatva provides free inclusions like White Glove delivery and longer-than-average warranty coverage.

Saatva designed the HD as an option specifically for heavyweight sleepers, which may include overweight couples, tall individuals or heavyweight athletes. The mattress has thick latex and memory foam comfort layers for pressure relief, and it combines polyfoam with an ultra-thick steel coil core for enhanced support and durability.

How Well Does the Saatva HD Regulate Temperature?

Given the Saatva’s firmness setting (softer mattresses tend to retain more heat), the Saatva HD’s breathable top layers of  organic cotton and ventilated Talalay latex layer will sleep cool. Some of the best cooling mattresses are innerspring mattresses and hybrid mattresses, because they  sleep cooler, and have coil layers that promote steady airflow throughout the night. The Saatva HD is no different, but the use of latex and cotton in the upper layers of the bed give it a bit of an edge over similar hybrids when it comes to cooling.

Saatva HD Mattress Firmness & Feel

Feel, firmness and comfort for different sleeping positions are all considered in this mattress. For example, if your partner is on the heavier side and you’re not, it’ll feel a little different to each of you. For most people, the Saatva HD is going to feel like a pillow-top mattress instead of a true memory foam mattress, latex mattress or hybrid mattress. We consider that a strength of the Saatva HD, because it makes it universally comfortable.

As far as firmness goes, the heavier you are, the softer the bed’s going to feel. For the average person, it’s going to feel roughly medium-firm. If you weigh 300 pounds or more, it will feel closer to a medium. It’s both supportive and contouring enough to accommodate side, back, stomach and combination sleepers, but its appropriateness for you will depend on your particular situation.

Is the Saatva HD Mattress Good For Couples?

We’ve combined an analysis of durability, motion transfer and edge support to discuss the Saatva HD’s longevity. That’s because we think these are especially important mattress qualities for larger people to consider when shopping. Heavier bodies will put more pressure on a mattress, so it’s important that a mattress designed for heavyweight sleepers can resist sagging and sinkage that can lead to an uneven surface, material breakdown and spinal alignment issues.

We’ll talk motion isolation first: even though the latex comfort layer is bouncy, the Euro top, memory foam and polyfoam surrounding it make the bed excellent at minimizing motion transfer across its surface.

When it comes to edge support, you shouldn’t have any issues on the Saatva HD. The sturdy coils at the core are supportive on their own, but Saatva added a layer of perimeter polyfoam to give the Saatva HD even more resistance against edge sagging for heavyweight sleepers who like to sit on the edge of the bed or couples who need the full width of the mattress to spread out comfortably. The support layer above the coils also contributes to long lasting durability.

Together, the bed’s motion isolation, edge support and high-quality materials will help it last about ten years, which is longer than average.

Saatva HD Mattress by Sleeping Positions

Back Stomach Side Combination
Support system keeps the hips and shoulders from sinking.

❌ Average weight sleepers may not experience comfortable low back contouring in this position.

✅ Deep comfort system provides cushioning to the shoulders and hips.

Not as much pressure relief and conforming as a softer bed.

✅ Supportive feel will prevent sinking in the midsection.

Exceptionally firm feel may be uncomfortable to some stomach sleepers.

Bounce from the top latex comfort layer makes changing positions easy.

Comfort and support in primary sleeping position will depend on body type.

Back Sleepers: Averageweight back sleepers who like a firmer feel and heavyweight back sleepers will find that the Saatva HD evenly distributes their body weight and keeps the hips and shoulders from sinking.

See: Best Mattresses for Back Sleepers

Stomach Sleepers: The best mattresses for stomach sleepers are softer, while still supporting your hips and torso. The Saatva HD’s thick support system should keep the hips elevated to promote spinal alignment, and the thicker-than-average comfort system may help prevent any pressure that builds up along the neck as you lay your head to one side.

Side SleepersHeavyweight side sleepers need the best of both worlds: conforming for pressure relief at the hips and shoulders and a support system that will prevent the body from sinking in and disrupting spinal alignment. The Saatva HD’s thick coils do their part to provide support, while the multi-layer comfort system gives relief to the hips and shoulders. If you’re lightweight, you’ll likely find the Saatva HD too firm as a side sleeper or in other positions.

Combination Sleepers: Given that the Saatva HD can provide support and comfort in all three primary sleeping positions, it’s a best mattress for combination sleepers. You should find some nice bounce and responsiveness from the top layer of Talalay latex, which will help make changing positions a little bit easier throughout the night.

Saatva HD Mattress Construction

The construction of the Saatva HD is similar to that of other Saatva beds. The difference is that the Saatva HD has denser, thicker, possibly higher-quality materials, which make it able to support someone up to 500 pounds. As an example, its main support layer is a layer of thick-gauge coils, which are 25% stronger than the standard coil set on most other mattresses out there.

Cover: The mattress has an organic cotton cover with a Euro top design. The pillow top has 2” of soft polyfoam, which gives the bed a slightly fluffier, airy feel. It’s also tufted, giving the entire bed a “luxury hotel” aesthetic.

Comfort layer: The Saatva HD actually has two comfort layers. The top layer is 1.5” of Talalay latex. Latex is more breathable, resilient, and responsive than memory foam and polyfoam, so this gives the Saatva HD’s comfort layer a nice bounce. Following this is a 1.5” memory foam layer. It’s higher-density than most memory foams, so it will allow for some cushioning, conforming and pressure relief, but it won’t break down as easily as low-density memory foam.

Transition Layer: The support layers begin with a 2” polyfoam transition layer. This support foam layer further curbs sinkage from the memory foam layer above it and prevents sleepers from coming into uncomfortable contact with the thick coil base.

Support Core: The bulk and core of the Saatva HD is a coil system made from thick, sturdy, high-quality materials. These include 12.5-gauge recycled steel coils and an encasement of high-density polyfoam. The coils are among the thickest and sturdiest on the market (most beds have a gauge of between 12 and 17), and the perimeter foams enhance the bed’s edge support.

Saatva HD Mattress Buying Experience

Shipping, Delivery & Returns

The Saatva HD comes with free White Glove delivery, which is an upgraded delivery service from the standard bed-in-a-box free shipping that comes with most online mattresses. It ships full size, which means you may not experience some of the off-gassing that’s often an issue with mattresses that are compressed and rolled for shipping. With White Glove delivery, a team will bring it to your home, set it up and include old mattress removal upon request.

Trial Period

The Saatva HD comes with a 180-night sleep trial, so you’ll have up to four months to decide whether or not you like it. If you don’t like it, you can return it. However, Saatva HD does charge a $99 transportation fee for returns.

The Saatva HD is backed by a 20-year warranty, which is about two times longer than the industry standard warranty coverage period. This is one way that Saatva demonstrates that it has a lot of confidence in the construction, comfort and durability of the product.

The Saatva HD is available from Saatva’s website, not from third-party retailers.

Our Saatva HD Mattress Review

Nerd Score: 4.8/5

So, should you buy the Saatva HD mattress? We think the Saatva HD is one of the nicest beds out there. We’ve reviewed dozens of mattresses at MattressNerd.com and the Saatva HD is definitely in the top few with regard to quality, price, support and comfort. That being said, it certainly isn’t for everyone. If you’re lightweight or average weight and enjoy a plush mattress, we recommend a softer hybrid instead. The Saatva HD is best suited for individuals and couples who are heavyweight.

If you have a larger-than-average budget but don’t mind investing in a high-quality mattress that you can trust will be supportive, durable, and comfortable in any sleeping position, we think you’ll love the Saatva HD.

How does the Saatva HD compare to the Saatva Classic?

The Saatva Classic is Saatva’s flagship mattress, and it’s an innerspring bed with a coil-on-coil design (transitional pocketed coils placed over steel coils). It’s supportive, responsive and has excellent edge support, along with a Euro-top cover like the Saatva HD.

So, what’s the difference? The Saatva Classic comes in three firmness settings and two heights, so it’s designed to appeal to a wide variety of body types and preferences. The Saatva HD, on the other hand, is more limiting to shoppers and is specifically designed for heavyweight and large sleepers who need extra support for better sleep health. What makes the Saatva HD stand out?

The Saatva HD is one of the most supportive mattress options available, making it an excellent pick for larger individuals and couples. Not only can it support people who weigh up to 500 lbs., it’s extremely breathable, helping hot sleepers (heavyweight people often are) sleep cool. Lastly, it’s durable, luxuriously made and features organic, eco-friendly materials. Simply put: you can take one look at the mattress and see that it’s better quality than other beds out there.

Does Saatva offer free returns for the Saatva HD?

A $99 transportation fee is charged for mattress returns. A crew will pick up the mattress from your home and you’ll be refunded for the price of the mattress minus the return fee. For more information on high-quality mattress brands that operate online, see our Best Online Mattresses article.
