The Saatva Youth is designed as “two mattresses in one,” so that it can adapt to your child as they grow. Once your child turns eight, you can flip the mattress over so they can reap the benefits of the opposite side. The “8–12 side” of this mattress also starts off with an organic cotton cover, which sits on top of a layer of high-density, breathable comfort foam that promotes airflow and keeps the sleeper nice and cool. The final layer features steel coils that are positioned for spinal support for older children and teenagers.

Who Is a Twin Mattress Right For?

Children

A Twin mattress is just the right size to accommodate children and their growing bodies. Also, since children’s rooms are often smaller, a Twin mattress won’t take up too much space, leaving room for other furniture, toys, and more.

Teens

A Twin mattress is oftentimes the best sleep option for teenagers because of its accommodating size. Even as a teenager reaches their later adolescence, a Twin mattress is still a viable sleep choice for them before they graduate to a Twin XL or Full size bed.

Single Adults

Even though Twin mattresses are popular with children and teenagers, single adults can enjoy them as well. College students can use Twin mattresses in their dorm rooms or apartments, and young adults may want these smaller beds for their first apartments (especially if they live in one-room studios).

Mattress Size Comparison

Twin vs. Twin XL

A Twin mattress measures approximately 38″ wide and 75″ long, making it ideal for sleepers under 6′ tall. A Twin XL mattress is the same width, but features an extra 5″ in length, allowing it to accommodate sleepers who are taller than 6′. Want to learn more? Take a look at our article on Twin vs. Twin XL size mattresses.

Twin vs. Full

A Full mattress measures roughly 54″ wide and 75″ long, making it wider than a standard Twin mattress, but around the same length. Our Twin vs. Full mattress article has a lot of great information if you’d like to do more research.

Twin vs. Queen

A Queen mattress measures 60″ wide and 80″ long, which is both wider and longer than a standard twin. The Queen size mattress is best for larger teenagers, adults, and couples, but it may be too large for children’s bedrooms and dorm rooms.

Mattress Size Guide

Best Materials for a Twin Mattress

Memory Foam Mattresses

Memory foam is soft, plush, and supportive, and it contours and molds to the shape of your body as you sleep. It generally performs well for side sleepers and couples, though when it comes to a Twin mattress you likely won’t have room to share the bed with anyone. Also, this type of mattress usually doesn’t regulate temperature as well as a hybrid or latex mattress. For more info, head over to our best memory foam mattresses page.

Latex Mattresses

Latex mattresses are usually made of organic Talalay latex, which is soft and bouncy. These mattresses are also naturally hypoallergenic and can wick away body heat as you sleep. Latex is a great option for those looking for an eco-friendly mattress that enables ease of movement. Check out our best latex mattress page if you’re interested.

Hybrid Mattresses

A hybrid mattress consists of a blend of innersprings or coils, and foam or latex. They offer exceptional support, bounciness, pressure relief, and body contouring. While hybrid mattresses make up some of the highest-quality products that we’ve tested, you’ll likely have to pay more than you would for a traditional foam mattress. But, if you do have a higher budget, we recommend looking at our best hybrid mattresses page for some great Twin options.

What to Look For in a Twin Mattress

Temperature Regulation

There are many ways that mattresses can help regulate your body temperature and keep you cool at night; a few examples include utilizing open-cell foam, adding cotton covers with high breathability, and infusing foams with cooling materials, like gel. While most mattress companies boast some sort of cooling technology, a hybrid construction will generally be cooler than an all-foam construction, simply because there is more space for airflow.

Price

The two biggest factors in mattress price are the materials used in their construction, and the mattress seller (some luxury retailers will oftentimes sell their mattress options at a mark-up). On average, a Twin mattress can range between $400–$600.

Firmness

Mattress firmness is rated on a scale of 1–10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the most firm. A soft or medium mattress is best for side sleepers, since those firmness levels best cushion their hips and shoulders and keep their spine aligned. A medium-firm mattress is ideal for back sleepers, since it keeps their spine aligned and supports their shoulders, back, hips, and legs. For stomach sleepers, a mattress that’s higher on the firmness scale is best because it keeps your hips lifted in alignment and it supports your neck (since you’ll be sleeping with your head turned to the side at night).

Pressure Relief

If you wake up with aches and pains each morning, your mattress may be to blame. You’ll want to pick a mattress that doesn’t aggravate pressure points to keep you nice and comfortable at night. Look for mattresses that offer targeted pressure relief.

Bunk beds were designed primarily for children and teenagers. That being said, it’s possible for adults to take advantage of bunk beds if they have to share a small room. Common examples of adults using a bunk bed include starter apartments and college dorm rooms.
