How Does the Plank Mattress Feel?

Firmness

The Plank by Brooklyn Bedding is a popular bed for firm mattress fans. It has a flippable design with one firm side and one extra-firm side. On a 1–10 firmness scale, with 10 being the firmest, the firm side rates a 7/10 and the ultra-firm side a 9/10.

The extra-firm side is one of the firmest mattresses we’ve seen, with just a bit more cushion than lying on the floor. This firmness level is best for back and stomach sleepers who find most firm mattresses too soft. The firm side is a tad firmer than the typical medium-firm mattress and works well for people who enjoy some pressure relief alongside firm support

With two firmnesses in one bed, most people who like a slightly firmer feel will find what they need in the Plank. But if you like a plush mattress with generous pressure relief, the Plank is not the right bed for you.

Temperature

The Plank sleeps cooler than most all-foam beds thanks to its firm construction. Firmer foam along the top layer means that you won’t sink in, allowing airflow to sweep away excess heat. However, it can sleep a touch hotter than some firm innerspring mattresses because it doesn’t have breathable innerspring coils. If you sleep hot, consider adding the optional cooling panel to your Plank for a more comfortable night’s sleep.

Support

The Brooklyn Bedding Plank is an ultra-supportive mattress. Both sides are firm with a durable core of high-density foam. With two sides that provide firm support, we expect this mattress to last at least seven years, if not longer. The edges are also comfortable and reliable, so you can use them to get into bed or sleep along them without feeling unstable.

The Plank can support up to 950 lbs, but Brooklyn Bedding suggests the Titan mattress for folks weighing more than 300 lbs. The Plank’s top foam layers may soften over time, with heavier folks more likely to experience softening.

Back Sleepers

The Plank delivers a superb balance of contouring and support for average-weight and heavyweight back sleepers. The firm side has lightly conforming foam layers that cradle the lower back for excellent alignment, while the firm core minimizes sinkage. However, lightweight people will likely find both sides of the Plank too hard and may experience areas with too much pressure.

For other options, check out our top picks for the best mattresses for back sleepers.

Stomach Sleepers

The Plank is one of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers who like a firmer feel. Both sides of the Plank have a thin layer of soft quilted polyfoam that brings comfort to the chest and hips, while firm core foam ensures the hips don’t sink in too far.

While most heavyweight and average-weight stomach sleepers should find sufficient comfort on the Plank, lightweight people may find it a touch too firm. The less you weigh, the firmer a mattress feels and the less your pressure points sink in. But if you like something super firm, it’s likely to suit your needs.

Side Sleepers

We do not recommend the Plank for side sleepers because its firm surface can cause too much pressure on the hips and shoulders. While some heavyweight sleepers might sink in enough on the slightly softer side, most lightweight and average-weight people don’t apply enough pressure for proper body alignment and pressure relief.

For a better fit, check out the beds that made our best mattresses for side sleepers list.

Combination Sleepers

Combination sleepers require a mattress that does a good job keeping them comfortable in each of their sleeping positions. So long as you’re an average-weight or heavyweight person who sleeps primarily on your back or stomach, the Plank can be a good fit. However, side sleepers and lightweight folks typically need more softness than the Plank offers.

Another excellent attribute of the Plank for combination sleepers is its responsiveness. Because it’s firm, you won’t sink in too much and can change positions without feeling stuck.

See our top picks for the Best Mattresses for Combination Sleepers.

Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  2 3 1
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): 4 5 1
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  4 4 2

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Does It Fit Your Lifestyle?

Couples

So long as both you and your partner prefer firmer mattresses, the Plank is an excellent bed to consider. Because the Plank is made entirely from foam, it does an excellent job at absorbing motion. The result is a bed that you can share without worrying about waking up your partner when you move around.

Additionally, the Plank’s firm build means that its edges are more supportive than those of most foam mattresses. With sturdy edges, you and your partner can sleep along the entire mattress surface without feeling like you might roll off.

People Who Need a Durable Mattress

The Plank is more durable than your average foam mattress. Its durability is due in part to ultra-firm foams that resist body indentations better than softer foams. The one issue you might run into is the foams starting to soften after five or so years, which happens to most foam beds. Because the Plank has only been around since 2018, there hasn’t been enough time to determine how well the Plank stands up to years of use.

People With Back Pain

Some people find that firm mattresses help with back pain. Because the Plank has both a firm and ultra-firm side, it provides exceptional spinal support—especially for stomach sleepers. When you sleep on your front, you need a bed that keeps your hips from sinking in, and firm beds excel at this.

But if you’re a side sleeper, the Brooklyn Plank may exacerbate lower back, shoulder, and hip pain. A bed needs to support the spine’s natural shape, and on your side, that means cushioning the hips and shoulders. The Plank isn’t soft enough to allow for healthy alignment in most side sleepers.

Plank mattress construction

Construction: What’s Under the Surface?

The Plank is one of the firmest all-foam mattresses. Its flippable design boasts one extra-firm side and one firm side, which makes the Plank accommodate most sleepers who prefer a firm feel. Shoppers can choose to add a cooling panel along both sides of the bed that makes this foam mattress sleep as cool as a traditional innerspring or hybrid mattress.

Layer #1: Quilted Top Layer (0.75”)—Extra-Firm Side

Along the top layer of the Plank’s ultra-firm side is a thin layer of quilted polyfoam that adds a hint of cushion. Don’t expect much give, just a touch of softness.

You may choose to add an optional cooling top panel on both sides of the flippable mattress. The cooling panel contains phase change materials that transfer heat away from the mattress’s surface to combat heat retention.

Layer #2: High-Density Base Foam (7”)

A thick core of firm, durable foam provides sturdy comfort without excess give or contouring. This all-foam support layer minimizes motion transfer so that couples can enjoy support without feeling one another’s movements.

Layer #3: TitanFlex Comfort Foam (2”)

TitanFlex foam provides a slight cushion on the firm side of the mattress for sleepers who like a more traditional firm mattress feel.

Layer #4: Quilted Top Layer (1.5”)—Firm Side

A thicker layer of cushiony polyfoam quilted into the mattress cover allows heavier body parts to modestly sink in for pressure relief. If you choose the optional cooling panel, both sides of the bed contain cooling phase change materials.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

Brooklyn Bedding offers free FedEx ground shipping in the contiguous U.S. with a non-refundable shipping fee for customers in Hawaii, Alaska, and Canada. The typical shipping time is three to five days. Brooklyn Bedding does not currently have a white glove delivery option, so you must set up your new bed yourself.

The Plank is a bed-in-a-box mattress, meaning your new bed is compressed into a box smaller than the mattress before it’s shipped. Unboxing is relatively straightforward, but you may want to have a friend help because the Plank weighs up to 120 lbs. Place it on your bed frame or box spring, unbox it, remove the plastic wrap, and unroll it.

It may take a few days for your new mattress to fully expand and lose any residual off-gassing odor. We recommend waiting to make your bed until it’s reached its full size and has minimal to no odor.

Warranty

The Plank comes with an industry-standard 10-year warranty covering defects, including things like body impressions greater than 1” or cracks in the foam. Normal wear-and-tear and problems caused by the owner are not covered.

Examples of normal wear-and-tear include increased foam softness and changes in the fabric color. Common issues that aren’t covered include sagging caused by an unsupportive foundation, spills, cuts, tears, or burns. We recommend using a sturdy foundation and a waterproof mattress protector to protect your new investment.

Trial Period & Returns

Every Brooklyn Bedding mattress comes backed by a 120-night sleep trial. From the date your new mattress arrives on your doorstep, you have 120 nights to try it out and determine if it’s right for you. You must wait 30 days before initiating a return, as this gives your body time to adjust to a new sleeping surface.

If you decide to return the Plank mattress during the trial period, Brooklyn Bedding provides free returns. You must contact Brooklyn Bedding to start the return and then find a local charity to pick up the mattress. Be sure to grab a receipt from the charity as proof and give it to Brooklyn Bedding. After the process is complete, you can expect a refund on your original form of payment.

Note: The trial period and return policy may be different if you buy your Plank mattress on Amazon.com.

Plank Mattress FAQs

Which Side of the Plan is Firmer?

When you view the Plank mattress from the side, you can see the word “PLANK.” If the word is right-side up, the top is extra-firm. Another way to tell is that the ultra-firm side has a diamond stitch and the firm side a jump stitch.

How Does the Return Policy Compare to Other Brands?

Brooklyn Bedding’s return policy is slightly more generous than that of the average bed-in-a-box mattress. Brooklyn Bedding offers free returns during the first 120 nights, compared with 100 nights for most companies. Most brands, including Brooklyn Bedding, won’t accept returns until you have had the bed for at least 30 nights.

Is the Plank Mattress Worth It?

The Plank mattress costs around the same as the average Queen size foam mattress, and is more durable than the average all-foam bed. As it is one of the firmest mattresses on the market, it is a good deal for shoppers looking for a firm feel.

Comparing the Plank Mattress

Plank Mattress vs. Titan Mattress

The Titan is Brooklyn Bedding’s mattress designed for plus-size sleepers. It’s a hybrid mattress that’s more durable and responsive than the flippable, all-foam Plank. Because the Titan contains coils, it’s a bit bouncier and cooler than the Plank, although both beds are suitable for hot sleepers.

The Plank has a firm and extra-firm side, which makes it best for firm mattress fans. The Titan comes in either a Luxe or Firm model to accommodate heavier folks who like greater pressure relief and those who like a more supportive feel.

Brooklyn Bedding Titan Mattress

The Titan Hybrid mattress was designed to be one of the best mattresses for plus-size sleepers. The hybrid construction, consisting of memory foam and pocketed coils, puts this mattress on the medium-firm end of the firmness scale, making it a great option for all sleeping positions.

Plank Mattress vs. Brooklyn Aurora Hybrid

The Brooklyn Aurora Hybrid is a luxury mattress with an opulent, 5-star hotel mattress feel. Compared to the firm, flippable Plank mattress, the Aurora has more of a conforming and cloud-like feel. The Aurora comes in soft, medium, and firm, with each model softer than either side of the Plank.

Both the Plank and Aurora Hybrid are excellent mattresses for hot sleepers. Opt for the Plank if you prefer to sleep “on” your bed and the Aurora Hybrid for a more luxurious experience.

Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Hybrid Mattress

The Aurora Hybrid is Brooklyn Bedding's most popular mattress. It comes in three firmness levels and features both innerspring coils and cooling copper-infused gel foam, meaning it suits those who sleep hot, as well as a wide range of sleep preferences.

Plank Mattress vs. Tempur-Pedic Adapt

Tempur-Pedic crafts five lines of high-end memory foam mattresses, with the firm TEMPUR-Adapt the most similar to the Brooklyn Bedding Plank. While both beds are great for couples thanks to superb motion isolation, they feel vastly different.

The Plank has dual-sided firmness, with both sides firmer than the TEMPUR-Adapt firm option. Because Tempur-Pedic mattresses all have memory foam top layers, they provide more contouring and better pressure relief than the Plank. The Plank is cooler and easier to move around on but doesn’t have the cradling feel of Tempur-Pedic beds.

Plank Mattress vs. Sleep Number

Sleep Number mattresses have adjustable air chambers that allow you to find your preferred firmness. The Sleep Number beds come in various models to suit both people who like lots of pressure-relieving foam and those who enjoy greater firmness.

The Plank mattress is better than any Sleep Number bed for ultra-firm mattress lovers. But if you like greater pressure relief, or if you and your partner have different firmness preferences, Sleep Number is likely a better option.

Plank Mattress vs. Casper Original Mattress

The Casper Original is a mixed foam mattress that combines the contouring feel of memory foam with the cool responsiveness of polyfoam. The Casper has a medium-firm feel that’s softer than either the firm or ultra-firm side of the Plank.

While both beds are made entirely of foam, only the Casper has zoned support. Softer foam at the hips and shoulders and firmer foam along the hips make the Casper better suited for side sleepers and lightweight people. The Plank is better for heavier folks, firm mattress fans, and hot sleepers.

Casper Original Mattress

The original mattress that made the brand famous, the Casper is known for its design that suits all sleep positions. Casper's Zoned Support feature is engineered to support the hips, shoulders and back to keep the spine aligned. At an affordable price point, too, this mattress is hard to beat.

Pros/Cons

Pros

  • Dual-sided firmness: The Plank has an ultra-firm and firm side, so you can flip from one side to the other to find your preferred firmness.
  • Minimal motion transfer: The Plank is made entirely from foam that absorbs motion rather than spreading it across the surface.
  • Sleeps cool: The Plank doesn’t retain heat like memory foam beds, and with the optional cooling panel, it’s a good bed for hot sleepers.
  • Exceptional spinal support: The Plank is a firm mattress, with the firmest side just a touch softer than the floor. Some people with back pain like the support of a firm bed that doesn’t sink in at heavier body parts.

Complaints

  • Not for side sleepers: Side sleepers have the best sleep experience on mattresses that are softer and more pressure-relieving than the Plank.
  • No springy feel: The Plank is supportive and easy to move around on, but it doesn’t have the bouncy feel of an innerspring mattress. Some people love the cool, responsive feel of hybrid and innerspring beds.
  • Not good for joint pain: The Plank has thin comfort layers and may cause too much pressure at the hips, shoulders, and other joints. If you have arthritis, you may prefer a slightly softer mattress.

What’s the Bottom Line?

The Brooklyn Bedding Plank is best for sleepers who love extra firm mattresses. The extra-firm side is one of the firmest sleeping surfaces around, great for people who want the support of the ground with a hint of softness for comfort. The firm side is a good fit for most stomach and back sleepers who like a slightly firmer-than-average feel.

The Plank is cooler than most all-foam beds, and it isolates motion so that couples can sleep together peacefully. But if you like a luxurious, hotel-like mattress, the Plank isn’t likely to offer the cushion you need. It comes with a 120-night risk-free sleep trial, so you can sleep on it before making a final decision.
