Brooklyn Bedding Propel Mattress Video Review

We even have a video breakdown of the Brooklyn Propel for visual learners, skeptics, and those who just aren’t feeling reading today.

Brooklyn Bedding Propel Firmness and Feel

Brooklyn Bedding Propel Mattress Firmness

At Mattress Nerd, we rate the firmness of beds on a 1–10 scale, 10 being the firmest. As a flippable bed, the Propel has two firmness levels: that’s right! Double trouble, baby! The soft side is a 2/10 on our scale which we categorize as soft (of course). The firm side is a 5/10 on our scale which is medium-soft. This firmness level works best for the average side and back sleeper.

Stomach sleepers typically don’t stay aligned very well on soft mattresses.

What Does the Brooklyn Bedding Propel Feel Like?

The soft side of the Propel mattress feels very doughy. Your body heat doesn’t even have to activate the foam, like with your traditional memory foam; instead, you just sink right in. The firm side doesn’t have as much sink, but there is still the plush, enveloping feel.

The cover is cool to the touch, so you get a nice cooling sensation when you lie down.

What Sleeping Position Is the Brooklyn Bedding Propel Best For?

Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  5 3 5
Average-weight (130–230 lbs): 5 2 4
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  3 1 3

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Back Sleepers

The soft side of the Propel is going to work best for lightweight back sleepers. The soft foams should feel nice on the spine, and the firmness level shouldn’t disrupt alignment for this body weight.

The firm side will best suit average-weight back sleepers, because this weight category needs something a little firmer than plush to keep them aligned, but we still see great pressure relief in the back for this position.

Heavyweight back sleepers may want to look for a firmer bed altogether, because those soft foams can throw them out of alignment. If this sounds like you, we recommend that you check out the best mattresses for back sleepers for a better alternative.

Stomach Sleepers

The main problem stomach sleepers face in finding a good mattress is alignment. Stomach sleepers need a bed that keeps the hips elevated and in line with the rest of the spine, and a firm mattress best achieves this. Unfortunately, the Propel is just too soft for lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight stomach sleepers. See the best mattresses for stomach sleepers for other options.

Side Sleepers

The best mattresses for side sleepers tend to be on the medium-soft end of the spectrum, because they need something that will cradle the sensitive hips and shoulders. The soft side of the mattress showed great alignment for all body weights, but this 2/10 comfort level works best for lightweight side sleepers.

The firm side came with pressure issues on the hips and shoulders of our average-weight and heavyweight testers, but still great alignment. Average-weight sleepers could still use the soft side if they have hip or shoulder pain, but we recommend that heavy people check out a medium-firm mattress with better pressure relief.

Combination Sleepers

The best mattresses for combination sleepers respond to your movements and work well with your preferred sleeping positions. We think lightweight and average-weight side/back combo sleepers will enjoy the Propel, but heavyweight combination sleepers may feel stuck in the soft foam layers.

Brooklyn Bedding Propel Performance

Is the Brooklyn Bedding Propel Mattress Cooling?

The cover of the Propel is cool to the touch and the foams are infused with copper to add an extra cooling sensation. Plus, there are breathable coils in the core of the mattress, helping with overall breathability. To sum it up, the Propel has airflow layers to help with sleeping temperature neutral combined with a few layers that add a touch of cooling.

Edge Support

Edge support is a crucial factor in a mattress for people with mobility issues, like seniors, or those who like to sleep there. Because the foams in this mattress are so soft, the edge support definitely leaves something to be desired. While sitting on the edge of the soft side, we noticed a lot of sinking, and not very much support. The firm side was a bit better, but not by much.

If supportive edges are very important to you, we recommend you hunt for a mattress with reinforced edges.

Responsiveness

If you’re a combination sleeper or if you and your partner have a healthy sex life, a mattress with good responsiveness (also called ease of movement) is crucial. The soft side of the Propel is more responsive than the firm side, surprisingly. However, we think heavier people will feel less stuck on the firm side of the mattress.

Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?

Having a mattress with good motion isolation leads to sound sleep for both you and your partner. Motion transfer can wake you up if your partner gets up for a midnight glass of water. The Propel has average motion isolation on the firm side, meaning if you don’t consider yourself to be a light sleeper, you won’t have any problems.

However, the soft side does transfer more motion, so light sleepers beware.

Noise

Even though the Propel contains coils, they are not noisy as you move.

Pain Relief

Pain relief on a mattress is centered around two things: alignment and pressure relief. The Propel offers great alignment for side sleepers, which helps eliminate morning back pain. Lightweight back sleepers are best aligned on either side, and average-weight back sleepers stay best aligned on the firm side. Heavyweight back sleepers and all stomach sleepers may have poor alignment on this mattress.

When it comes to pressure relief, we saw great results on the soft side, but the firm side showed pressure issues for all body types.

Sex

If you an your partner are looking for something compatible for sex, the Propel will work. It’s responsive, durable, cooling, and quiet.

Off-Gassing

Off-gassing is the unpleasant, chemical smell you may experience after unboxing a mattress containing foams. We found the Propel to have a slight off-gassing smell, but nothing too noticeable. It disappeared after a few hours.

Durability

The durability of a mattress is all in the materials. Since the Propel has two comfort layers and a system of supportive, steel coils, it should last you for a while. We gave it a 4/5, knocking off a point for the poor edge support, which will shorten its potential lifespan.

Brooklyn Bedding Propel Mattress Construction: What’s it made of?

Getting a peek inside the mattress gives you a great idea of how it is going to perform and how it should work for you. In this section, we break down the Propel layer by layer to tell you how each material contributes to the performance of the mattress.

Mattress Cover: The brand uses a smart fabric they call Upcycle™, which is supposed to transform your body heat into Far Infrared Rays. In layman’s terms, it pulls away your body heat and radiates it back as energy, so you wake up feeling more refreshed.

Firm Comfort Foam: A 1” layer of foam that’s firmer for a more aligned spine. Plus, it has copper for some extra cooling benefits.

High-Density Foam: Next, we have a 2” layer of high-density foam to ensure a firm experience.

Individually Wrapped Coil Layer: Here we get into the main support layer: 6” of pocketed coils for bounce, breathability, and durability.

Transition Foam: Here we have 2” of pressure-relieving foam that also adds extra bounce to the mattress.

Soft Comfort Foam: And finally, another layer of copper-infused soft foam for the soft side.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

The Propel ships free to the lower 48 states and should arrive in 10–14 business days. Brooklyn Bedding does ship their mattresses in a box, but they don’t currently offer white glove delivery.

It took us about a minute and a half to completely unbox the Propel and take away the plastic. We recommend doing this with a partner because, depending on the size, the mattress weighs anywhere from 50 to 126 pounds.

Warranty

All Brooklyn Bedding mattress warranties are 10 years long. They cover standard manufacturer defects (like cracks in the foam) and sagging deeper than an inch. Be aware that it does not cover loose threads, changes in comfort level, or decreased recovery of the foam.

Trial Period & Returns

Brooklyn Bedding offers a risk-free trial period, meaning if you buy your mattress, it doesn’t have to be yours forever if you don’t like it. In fact, you get 120 nights until your window for free returns closes. During this timeframe, sleep on your mattress like normal and allow 30 nights for it to break in. After that, if you and your new mattress aren’t compatible, return it for a full refund.

To return your Propel, contact Brooklyn Bedding’s customer service team. Know that you can also exchange your bed in this timeframe. Either way, Brooklyn Bedding will send someone to pick up your mattress, and if you decided to return, you’ll get your money back after pickup.

Propel Mattress FAQs

Does Brooklyn Bedding make good mattresses?

We think Brooklyn Bedding makes good mattresses. They have a ton of different beds, firmness levels, and materials to choose from. I think the Propel is a good mattress for anyone who sleeps hot and wants a soft mattress but aren’t sure how soft they want it.

How long does Brooklyn Bedding last?

Brooklyn Bedding mattresses are handcrafted in-house, so they are some of the most durable boxed mattresses we’ve come across. The Propel mattress has durable coils as its core, so it should last you around eight to 10 years, but other Brooklyn beds, like the Titan, could last even longer.

Are Brooklyn Bedding mattresses made in the USA?

Yes, Brooklyn Bedding mattresses are made in the U.S. That is good news, because it keeps prices low by cutting out the middlemen or overseas shipments, and it keeps shipping times brief because the mattress doesn’t have to travel as far to get to your home.

The Nerd’s Take: What’s the Bottom Line?

The Propel by Brooklyn Bedding is best for people who want a soft mattress, back sleepers, and hot sleepers. You get two mattresses for the price of one, thanks to the dual-sided firmness. Heavy people and those one a strict budget may want to look for a different mattress.
