Fingers crossed that you’re reading this breakdown just to familiarize yourself with the Purple mattress return policy, not because you want to return your Purple mattress

If you’re in the former category, good choice! Purple is one of the most innovative mattress companies on the market. The brand’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple Grid is praised for its pressure relief, and we consider it one of the best mattresses for side sleepers. This return policy break down will be good to know just in case you end up needing a different mattress

If you’re in the latter category, we totally get it. There is no mattress that fits all sleepers, and we’re here to take some stress out of the return process. In this break down, we’ll cover the full Purple mattress return policy, including the 100-night sleep trial, the return and exchange process, and any fine print.

100-Night Trial Period

The Purple mattress trial period is designed to give you more than enough time to decide if your Purple bed is the right fit. Instead of lying on a mattress for a few minutes in a showroom, you get over three months to try it in the comfort of your own home. This is your opportunity to figure out if the bed is compatible with your sleeping position, body type, and specific comfort preferences.

See: What is a Sleep Trial?

The sleep trial applies to all Purple mattress models, including the original Purple, the Purple Hybrid, and the Purple Hybrid Premier. The trial period starts on the day that your new mattress is delivered.

You’ll need to sleep on the mattress for at least 21 nights before initiating a return. Purple calls this the 21-day adjustment period. It takes up to a month for your body to adjust to a new sleeping surface, especially if your old mattress had developed sags or lumps. It’s totally normal to wake up with some back pain or soreness during this time, so don’t be surprised if you do!

The Purple return policy is only valid during the 100-night sleep trial period. Once you’ve slept on your new Purple mattress for 21 days, you can initiate a return by contacting Purple customer support. Expect your customer care rep to try to help you resolve any issues that could be contributing to your poor experience. For example, you may need a different bed frame or a more supportive box spring

Once the return is processed, you’ll receive a full refund for your mattress purchase, and Purple will arrange for a third-party to pick up the used mattress and recycle it or donate it to charity.

How Do I Return?

Purple makes returns pretty darn easy. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to return:

  1. Test out your Purple mattress for a minimum of 21 nights.
  2. Before day 100 of your sleep trial, call Purple’s support team at 888-848-2305, and tell them you’d like to return your mattress.
  3. Have your order number ready and decide on a disposal option (donate to a charity, drop off at a recycling facility, or arrange for mattress pickup by a disposal company like GotJunk).
  4. Email a photo of your donation or disposal receipt to your Purple support team member.
  5. Once the return is processed, you’ll see a full refund back to your original form of payment within 15 business days.

Purple Exchange Policy

Purple customers are eligible for one exchange during the sleep trial. You can opt for a different mattress size, firmness level, or mattress model. Since you only get one exchange, make sure you read lots of reviews and even consider chatting with a Purple team member before ordering the second mattress.

The exchange process is similar to the return process, but for the sake of clarity, here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. Choose your replacement mattress from Purple. Consult reviews and the Purple team to make sure you’re choosing the best model for your needs. (Maybe you need a medium-firm bed; maybe you need a model that better addresses your pressure points.)
  2. Call Purple’s support team at 888-848-2305, and have your order number handy. Place your order for your new mattress.
  3. If the price of the new mattress is different from that of the original, you’ll pay or be refunded the difference in price.
  4. Dispose or donate your original mattress, and email a photo of the donation/disposal receipt to your support representative at Purple.
  5. Receive your new Purple mattress. Note: You may be able to arrange for your new mattress to be delivered on the same day as your original is picked up for disposal or donation. Work with your support representative to make sure you always have a bed to sleep on!

How Does the Return Policy Measure Up?

Purple’s return policy is standard compared to the rest of the mattress industry. The majority of direct-to-consumer companies give their customers free returns during their sleep trial. The biggest difference we notice between Purple’s return policy and that of competitors is that Purple requires you to sleep on your mattress for only 21 days, rather than 30 days like most other online mattress brands

To give you a sense of how the Purple return policy measures up, here are the return policies of three other popular mattress brands.

Casper

Casper is an online mattress brand that specializes in hybrid and all-foam mattresses. Their mattress models come with a 100-night trial period and free returns, but you’ll need to sleep on the mattress for at least 30 nights before requesting a return. Casper will help you arrange for the used mattress to be picked and donated or recycled.

Nectar

Nectar is another mattress brand with two popular memory foam mattress models. The brand offers a 365-night trial period for both of their mattresses, and ask that you sleep on your Nectar mattress for at least 30 nights before returning. They help you find a donation center for your used mattress. If you don’t open your mattress during the first 90 days after delivery, you’re not eligible for a return. Also, they don’t offer returns for deliveries outside of the contiguous U.S.

Tempur-Pedic

Tempur-Pedic’s luxury memory foam mattresses come with a 90-night trial period and 30-night minimum for returns. You may be required to pay a $175 return shipping fee.

The Fine Print

Purple’s return policy is simple—100-night sleep trial, free returns, and full refunds—but here are a few “fine print” points to keep in mind:

  • Purple offers convenient bed-in-a-box delivery for orders directly from their website or phone line, but if you buy your Purple mattress from a retailer like Amazon or Mattress Firm, the return policy may be different. Make sure you are clear on your retailer’s return policy.
  • You don’t need to share a specific complaint or reason why you’re returning your mattress during the sleep trial—you can initiate a return for any reason.
  • Your mattress must be clean and undamaged to be eligible for a refund. Consider using the Purple mattress protector, which is designed specifically to flex with the Purple Grid.
  • The 10-year mattress warranty is different from the sleep trial and return policy. The warranty begins when you purchase your mattress, but it really only takes effect after the sleep trial. During the warranty period, you may be able to get repairs or a replacement mattress if yours is defective (but rest assured that Purple mattresses score high for durability).
  • If you bought your Purple mattress at a discounted price, you’ll be refunded the amount you paid, not the original price of the mattress.
  • You don’t need to re-box or repackage your mattress for donation or disposal pickup.
  • The Purple returns department is available Monday-Friday, 8AM–4:30PM mountain time.
