Nectar Premier Copper Mattress Firmness and Feel

Nectar Premier Copper Firmness

On a 1–10 firmness scale, where 1 is very soft and 10 is very firm, the Nectar Premier Copper mattress falls at a 5/10. This means the Premier Copper is a medium bed, which tends to work best for side sleepers and back sleepers. Side sleepers can have their hips and shoulders comfortably sink in, but medium is still firm enough to keep back sleepers supported.

What Does the Nectar Premier Copper Mattress Feel Like?

As for feel, this mattress is very thick and dough-y. You’re going to sink pretty deeply into the 4″ comfort layer if you are an average-weight or lightweight sleeper. Heavyweight sleepers will feel this bed as even softer and most likely sink too far down to maintain good spinal alignment. See our list of the best mattresses for heavy people for some great alternatives.

Which Sleeping Position Is the Nectar Premier Copper Best For?

Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  5 3 3
Average-weight (130–230 lbs): 5 2 4
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  3 2 2

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Back Sleepers

This Nectar mattress performs the best for back sleepers. When we lie on our backs, the spine keeps its natural “S” curve alignment that’s important for preventing back pain. This is especially true for lightweight and average-weight back sleepers.

The Premier Copper also does a great job at relieving pressure from back sleepers’ lower backs. However, heavyweight back sleepers will most likely sink past the comfort layers and rest on the dense base layer, meaning less pressure relief.

Stomach Sleepers

The best mattress for stomach sleepers is a firmer mattress that keeps the hips elevated and spine aligned. Unfortunately, the Nectar Premier Copper is a medium-soft mattress that hugs your body. This means the hips will bow down too far, especially average-weight and heavyweight sleepers’ hips. Lightweight sleepers may do well on the Premier Copper, because they won’t sink in as much.

Side Sleepers

It is important for side sleepers to have a mattress that both eases pressure from the hips and shoulders and keeps the spine straight from the base to the top of the neck.

Nectar Premier Copper works best for average-weight side sleepers. Lightweight side sleepers don’t sink in enough for the mattress to provide proper alignment, and heavyweight side sleepers sink too far, so the mattress relieves less pressure. For more options that cover a wider variety of body types, check out our list of the best mattresses for side sleepers.

Combination Sleepers

The Premier Copper is fairly responsive for a memory foam mattress. This means that as you move and change positions on the mattress surface, you don’t feel stuck—the bed responds to your movements. So, we consider it to be a good mattress for combination sleepers. Specifically, it’s a great mattress for back and side combination sleepers.

Nectar Premier Copper Mattress Performance

Is the Nectar Premier Copper Mattress Cooling?

Out of all of the Nectar mattresses, the Premier Copper has the most cooling materials. Not only is the cover noticeably cool to the touch, but the top layer has tons of infusions made to bring your temperature down. This layer contains copper, gel, and Phase Change materials that are meant to draw heat away from the body.

This construction will do well at keeping the average sleeper from overheating, but if you consider yourself a hot sleeper, the Premier Copper may not regulate temperature enough for you. Its all-foam construction means there aren’t too many places for your body heat to circulate through and escape. If you sleep extremely hot at night, check out our list of the best cooling mattresses.

Edge Support

Because the Premier Copper mattress has a very thick, dense base layer, this bed is more supportive and durable than other simply constructed memory foam mattresses. However, the edge support is less than stellar. When we tested this bed’s edge support, it sank down quite a bit, though we didn’t feel as if we were slipping too far off the edge. This is a good option for people who use the edges of the bed occasionally, but not all the time.

Responsiveness

If you’ve ever slept on a traditional memory foam mattress, you may have experienced the sensation of changing positions and rolling back into the body impression left by your old position. The slow response of memory foam comes with the territory of deeply contouring and conforming foams, so we were pleasantly surprised by the responsiveness of the the Nectar Premier Copper mattress. While it’s not the springiest, most responsive mattress we’ve tested, we didn’t have a difficult time changing positions on the mattress surface.

Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?

People who sleep with a partner either sleep like a rock or wake up with every movement their partner makes. If you’re in the latter category, you’ll want a mattress that isolates motion well.

Typically, all-foam mattresses keep away motion transfer fairly well. However, the Nectar Premier Copper mattress wasn’t the best at isolating motion during our tests, most likely because it’s fairly responsive. If you want a mattress that will keep motion from transferring across the surface of your bed, check out the best mattresses for couples.

Noise

We didn’t notice any creaking or squeaking while moving around on the Nectar Premier Copper mattress. It’s very quiet, so if you hear any sounds coming from your bed, it may be your foundation.

Pain Relief

If you’re experiencing chronic pain, there’s a chance your mattress could be the source or the solution. If you have joint pain or arthritis, a mattress with easy mobility and a softer feel—like the Nectar Premier Copper—will cushion your pressure points and keep stress off of your joints. This is especially true if you sleep on your sides. Our pressure map showed the best pressure relief for average-weight side sleepers and back sleepers under 230 lbs.

Stomach sleepers with pain need a firmer mattress that can keep their hips lifted in alignment with the rest of their spine. Subpar lumbar support can cause or worsen lower back pain. Also, heavyweight or plus size sleepers should look for a mattress that’s firmer all-around. That’s because they’ll sink deeper into the mattress and need a little more support to prevent or alleviate pain.

Sex

For a mattress to be good for sex, it needs to have bounce and temperature regulation. The Nectar Copper Premier is decent at cooling, but as an all-foam mattress, it lacks the breathability and bounce of coils. While it’s not the worst mattress for sex, it’s not the best mattress for sex, either.

Off-Gassing

There’s a chance that you’ll notice a new mattress scent after removing your Nectar from it’s packaging. This is called off-gassing, and it’s similar to a new car smell. Don’t worry, it’s non-toxic and temporary. To speed up the off-gassing process, keep your sheets off of the mattress and crack your windows (or turn on a fan) until the scent is gone.

Durability

We expect the Nectar Premier Copper mattress to last around six or seven years before showing signs of wear. For the longest lifespan, rotate the mattress head-to-foot once a season and use a mattress protector.

Construction: What’s Under the Surface?

The Nectar Premier Copper is made entirely of foam. Though all-foam mattresses tend to sleep hot, this bed infuses many cooling materials in its construction to offset the heat foam tends to hold onto. The contouring layers make this bed medium-soft and great at relieving pressure from the average sleeper.

Layer #1—Cooling Copper-Infused Cover: Mixed with copper fibers, the cover on the Premier Copper mattress is cool to the touch and breathable. As an added bonus, you can also completely unzip the cover, remove it, and throw it in the wash.

Layer #2—Memory Foam Comfort Layer with ActiveCool HD (4″): For this layer, Nectar infuses gel, copper, and Phase Change Materials into the foam for an ultra-cooling experience. This contouring foam also works to relieve pressure.

Layer #3—Dynamic Support Layer (1″): This layer of foam pushes back against the top layer for a more responsive feel.

Layer #4—High-Density Foam Base Layer (9″): This dense, thick foam base is 2″–3″ thicker than most other foam bases, making the Nectar Premier Copper more durable as far as memory foam mattresses go.

Layer #5—Slip-Resistant Cover: The bottom of the mattress cover is textured, which helps keep it in place on your foundation.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

Nectar ships the Premier Copper mattress free to the 48 states in the continental U.S. There is an added shipping fee for customers in Alaska and Hawaii. The bed should get to you within five to 10 business days, but it could take longer.

It took our team a little over a minute and a half to completely unbox the Nectar Copper and free it from the plastic (but remember, we have some experience). If setting up the mattress on your own doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, you can get white glove delivery for an additional fee. With this service, Nectar representatives will deliver your mattress, set it up for you, and take care of removing your old bed.

Warranty

Nectar offers a limited Lifetime warranty for all of their mattress models (a policy they call the “Forever Warranty”). Under this Nectar warranty, the company will replace or repair your mattress for free during the first 10 years and then for a fee for the remainder of its life.

This warranty covers defects and workmanship errors, such as indentations and physical flaws in the foam. However, it does not cover defects from misuses, comfort preference changes, and more.

Trial Period & Returns

Mattress trial periods give you the opportunity to sleep on the mattress for weeks at a time before you make the final decision to keep the mattress or return it. Nectar offers you 365 nights to do this, which is very generous compared to the industry-standard 100-night trial.

Starting the day of your delivery, you’ll officially begin your 365-night sleep trial. During this window, you can return your Nectar bed for a full refund. If you do decide to return, remember that you should let the mattress break in for at least 30 nights before attempting to exchange or return it.

The return process is pretty straightforward: contact customer service any way you prefer: phone, email, or live chat on their website. A Nectar rep will take care of you from there. To learn more about this process in depth, check out our Nectar return policy breakdown.

Addressing Common Nectar Mattress Complaints

Too Firm

A handful of customers said that the Nectar Premier Copper mattress was too firm and caused back pain. We consider the Premier Copper to have a medium firmness that’s on the softer side; however, mattress firmness is subjective. Lightweight side sleepers or those with sensitive joints may need an even softer mattress.

If you’re displeased with the feel of the Premier Copper, you can always return it during the sleep trial. Keep in mind, Nectar requires you to sleep on your mattress for 30 days before requesting a return. That’s because it can take up to a month for your body to acclimate to a new sleeping surface. If you’ve developed soreness before the month mark, there’s a good chance that it will resolve itself once your body has adjusted to the mattress.

Delayed Delivery

Some Nectar customers complained of delayed delivery, even up to two months. This is unusual. Nectar estimates that you’ll receive your new mattress 5–10 business days after placing your order. Once the mattress leaves the warehouse, you’ll get an email with an estimated delivery date and tracking information. If you haven’t received your mattress after 10 days, reach out to a customer service representative at Nectar.com for help.

Comparing Different Nectar Mattresses

Nectar Premier Copper Mattress vs. Nectar Original Mattress

Nectar Premier Copper Mattress is Best For: Nectar Original Mattress is Best For:
Hot Sleepers People Seeking Limited Motion Transfer
Combination Sleepers Shoppers Looking For a Lifetime Warranty
Memory Foam Lovers Sleepers Needing Pressure Relief

The Nectar Original mattress follows the same basic construction of the Copper mattress: a top comfort layer, a bouncy support layer, and a thick, dense base layer. However, the Original does a better job of relieving pressure for a wider variety of sleepers.

The Premier Copper is better at keeping sleepers cool. If you sleep hot, but still love the feel of foam, go with the Copper; if you often wake up with aches and pains, or are on a budget, go with the original model.

Memory Foam Lovers Sleepers Who Sleep on the Edge of their Bed

The Nectar Premier mattress is very similar to the Premier Copper, except it doesn’t have the copper boost. The Premier mattress is better at isolating motion, and the Copper is better at cooling. So, if you sleep with a partner, go with the Premier. If you tend to sleep hot, pick the Copper.

Purple is better for your alignment, while Nectar offers better pressure relief. If you have back pain and want to try something new, go with Purple; if you are a foam traditionalist, go with Nectar.

However, Nectar is better at relieving pressure. If you sleep hot, go with Casper; if you have joint pain, go with Nectar.

Nectar Premier Copper Mattress FAQs

What are the benefits of copper-infused mattresses?

Copper-infused mattresses tend to do a better job at keeping you cool, wicking away moisture, and keeping bacteria out of the bed. The antimicrobial properties of copper help keep bad odors and bothersome allergens away from your mattress. This is a good feature to have if you suffer from allergies.

How long do I have to wait before I can sleep on my Nectar mattress?

It depends on two factors: how quickly your mattress expands to full size and how bad the off-gassing smell is. It takes anywhere from right after you open it to 72 hours for the Nectar Premier Copper to fully expand. The off-gassing, "fresh can of paint" smell that comes with foam mattresses may take a few days to dissipate. Make sure you put this bed in a well-ventilated room until the off-gassing fades, and then you can sleep on it.

Can you flip the Nectar Premier Copper mattress?

No, you cannot flip the Nectar Premier Copper. This bed is designed to have the comfort layers on top and the dense, base layer at the bottom. To extend the life of your mattress, you can rotate it from head to foot every few months.

What’s the Bottom Line?

The Nectar Premier Copper is a great option for memory foam lovers who sleep on their side or back or those who often change positions throughout the night. The cooling materials don’t quite live up to the hype, but they’ll do a great job at keeping the average sleeper comfortable.
