Nectar vs. GhostBed Mattress Comparison

The GhostBed and the Nectar are two foam mattresses designed to accommodate varying sleep personalities with constructions unique to those needs. Find out if the more balanced feel of the GhostBed or the sinking memory foam feel of the Nectar is better suited for you.

Comparing Nectar & GhostBed

At the Mattress Nerd we know that not all memory foam mattresses are the same. When deciding between the Nectar and the GhostBed, it’s important to consider your sleeping positions and desired firmness. The GhostBed incorporates memory foam and aerated latex into its construction, providing a surface for hot sleepers to sleep cool.

The combination of these two materials creates a balanced feel for back, stomach and most combination sleepers to stay on top of the mattress. For those who like to sink into memory foam layers, Nectar is the better mattress for back sleepers or side sleepers who need pressure relief and cooling from the gel memory foam layer.

  • The GhostBed’s balanced memory foam and latex construction is slightly firmer and better suits stomach sleepers and back sleepers, while Nectar’s softer gel memory foam construction will provide pressure relief as a side sleeper mattress.
  • The Nectar will provide better motion isolation in its thicker memory foam layers than the GhostBed.
  • The GhostBed will not sink like memory foam, giving the mattresses two different feels despite their similar construction. The GhostBed will be the better mattress for combination sleepers to move around easily as they change positions.

  • Both mattresses incorporate memory foam in their construction. They deliver a similar relaxing “hug” for sleepers, protecting pressure points and contouring around the body.
  • Both mattresses use proprietary gel memory foam technology to keep sleepers cool at night, but the mattresses may not feel cool to the touch.
  • Both mattresses have similar polyfoam base layers and will have similar edge support when a sleeper sits or lays down on the edges.

Deciding Between Nectar & GhostBed

Firmness / Feel

At the Mattress Nerd, we rate mattress firmness on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the most firm. Side sleepers need softer mattresses for contouring around their hips and shoulders, but stomach and back sleepers typically go for the higher firmness levels.

Both back and stomach sleepers need to keep their spines and hips aligned on the mattress without sinking to avoid back pain. The GhostBed is slightly firmer—it’s around a 6.5/10 on our firmness scale—making it ideal for back and stomach sleepers. The Nectar is a little less firm, allowing back and side sleepers to find comfort.

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation is almost a necessity for any couple that shares a mattress. When we shift positions in our sleep or when we get in and out of bed, the motion can transfer across the surface of the mattress, potentially disturbing our partner. Motion isolation assures that you and your partner can have a relaxing night’s sleep.

Both mattresses will provide a good night’s sleep for couples, but the denser memory foam layers of the Nectar will be the better mattress for couples, as compared to the latex construction of the Ghostbed. To learn more about the differences in construction, check out our Latex vs. Memory Foam article.

Edge Support

Edge support refers to the level of firmness around the perimeter of your mattress. Some mattresses are reinforced around the edges so that they do not sag after years of getting in and out of bed. We find the Nectar to have less edge support than the firmer GhostBed, which is a better choice for larger people or those who want to maximize space on the mattress.

Pressure Relief

Certain materials and firmness levels offer varying levels of pressure relief for sleepers, depending on your sleeping position. While shopping for a mattress, you want a pressure-relieving design that will prevent you from waking up with neck or back pain.

Both mattresses deliver good pressure relief, so it comes down to your sleep position and your preference of bouncier latex in the GhostBed versus softer memory foam in the Nectar. The GhostBed’s firmer composition helps relieve pressure on hips, shoulders, back and neck for stomach and back sleepers. The Nectar’s softer memory foam construction allows it to reduce pressure points on side sleepers’ hips and shoulders, as one of our picks for the best mattress for side sleepers.

Spine Alignment

No matter what kind of sleeper you are, you want a mattress that will promote healthy spinal alignment. Otherwise, you can develop back issues over time. Once again, we look at sleeping positions to determine which bed delivers the best spinal alignment. The Nectar will keep back and side sleepers’ spines more aligned, and the GhostBed will better position stomach and back sleepers toward optimum spinal alignment. The best mattress for stomach sleepers provides proper spinal alignment by keeping the hips lifted and protecting the pressure points.

A good mattress is one that will last a long time without losing its structural integrity. Both the GhostBed and the Nectar are manufactured to retain their shape and form. The GhostBed features a 20-year warranty, and its latex construction provides it a slight edge, as latex holds its shape longer. The Nectar offers a Limited Nectar Forever Warranty for the full period of the original owner’s ownership.

If you’re tired of overheating at night, you’ll want to pick a mattress built with breathability and integrated cooling technology to wick away heat and prevent it from being trapped against your body. The Nectar’s gel memory foam layer is designed to pull heat away from the body and dissipate it throughout the night. But the GhostBed’s latex construction comes out on top, since latex inherently doesn’t trap heat like memory foam.

Nectar vs. Ghostbed: The Nectar (left) is an all-foam mattress, whereas the GhostBed (right) incorporates latex.

Our Final Take

Foam mattresses are quickly evolving to continue to isolate motion for couples while improving cooling technologies to help all body types sleep cool. The GhostBed mattress is designed to accommodate back and stomach sleepers, hot sleepers and combination sleepers. If you’re a side sleeper who also tends to sleep hot, or if you desire pressure relief on your hips and shoulders, we recommend the Nectar mattress. For couples seeking motion isolation, the Nectar is also the better choice, but for those on a budget, GhostBed is the less expensive option.
