The Mattress Nerd’s Take: The GhostBed 3D Matrix Hybrid is a 7 layer hybrid mattress suited for most sleeper types and sizes and those who find themselves overheating while they sleep. We find its medium firmness and transition polyfoam layers work well for combination sleepers to change positions easily while relieving pressure.  Although it is a pricier mattress, the GhostBed works great for hot sleepers with a cool-to-the-touch cover, gel memory foam and individually wrapped coils.

Who is the GhostBed Mattress Best For?

Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): 4 4 3
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): 4 3 4
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): 4 2 3

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers of lightweight, average weight and heavyweight builds should all find the 3D Matrix is capable of preventing back pain and supporting the hips and spine. The upper comfort layers of foam are soft enough for the hips to sink slightly without hurting the back and the coils will keep weight evenly distributed.

Stomach Sleepers

Lighter stomach sleepers will remain on the more plush foam layers of the GhostBed, balancing body weight on top of the mattress. Heavier stomach sleepers may sink past the foam and latex layers to the less comfortable coils. If their hips sink too far into the mattress, painful pressure can build up and lead to neck pain. Heavier stomach sleepers may need a firmer hybrid or innerspring mattress.

Side Sleepers

Average and heavier side sleepers should find pressure relief in their shoulders and hips, sinking just far enough into the foam layers to cradle their bodies. Lighter side sleepers may find the GhostBed too firm to properly contour around their bodies.

Combination Sleepers

The bounce of latex and responsiveness of the memory foam makes the GhostBed 3D Matrix one of the best mattresses for combination sleepers. The supportive coils protect back sleepers of sizes and lighter stomach sleepers, with pressure relief from the foam layers and spinal alignment from the coils.

How Does the Matrix Feel?

Responsiveness, Bounce and Ease of Movement

The combination of memory foam and latex should balance the need for responsiveness and ease of movement. The gel memory foam and polymer foam will cradle around your body as you change position but the latex will prevent you from feeling stuck in the mattress.

How Firm is This Mattress?

Every mattress is rated on a firmness scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the most firm and 1 being the softest. The GhostBed 3D Matrix Hybrid Mattress rates at approximately 6.5, just above the medium feel, making it a great mattress for back and stomach sleepers, heavier side sleepers and heavyweight sleepers.

How Well Does the GhostBed 3D Matrix Regulate Temperature?

With two layers specifically designed to absorb body heat and cool the sleeper, the GhostBed 3D Matrix is no stranger to temperature regulation. The 3D Matrix polymer layer stretches out in all directions instead of simply compressing, which means that body heat is distributed outward and away from the user. The cool-to-the-touch mattress cover and gel infused memory foam provide the pressure relief of memory foam without fear of heat entrapment.

Is the GhostBed 3D Matrix Mattress Good For Couples?

Though every couple is different, most will be happiest with a mattress that isolates motion. A mattress that prioritizes motion-isolating construction can help prevent those unfortunate wake-ups when your partner moves during the night.

Although the mattress includes motion-transferring coils, the multiple foam layers in the GhostBed 3D Matrix mattress help isolate movement and give each partner a healthy sleep experience. Reinforced coils provide stronger edge support, great for large couples or those who like to sleep near the edge.

7 Layers of Ghost: What’s Under the Surface?

The GhostBed 3D Matrix Hybrid Mattress consists of 7 different layers including foam layers and coils, which work together to give a firm yet cushioned experience for sleepers. At 13” tall this thicker mattress there are a lot of elements that work here in this bed-in-a-box.

Cover: Made of “Ghost Ice Fabric,” this mattress cover is cool to the touch and immediately provides hot sleepers with a breathable surface to rest on.

Layer #1: 3D Matrix Layer of Polymer: This top layer, made of thermal conductive gel polymer absorbs body heat and wicks it away from the sleeper.

Layer #2: 2” Gel Memory Foam: Another layer with cooling technology, the memory foam will cradle around your body, acting as a comfort layer for side sleepers and back sleepers.

Layer #3: Ghost Bounce Layer: As a latex layer, this will balance out the memory foam feel and prevent sleepers from feeling trapped in the upper layers. Latex provides bounce and is also a cooling material.

Layer #4: Ghost 3D Matrix Transition Foam: This layer helps distribute weight across the mattress evenly, especially for heavier sleepers or stomach sleepers, while also supporting pressure points.

Layer #5: Individually Wrapped & Reinforced Coils: This hybrid mattress includes individually wrapped coils that will further increase airflow and provide additional bounce for easy movement across the mattress.

Layer #6: 1” High Density Support Layer: The support core of this GhostBed mattress is made up of 1 inch of strong, firm foam, making the 3D Matrix a sturdy and durable mattress.

Comparing the GhostBed 3D Matrix

GhostBed 3D vs Casper Wave

Casper Wave Hybrid

The Casper Wave Hybrid strikes a balance with a middle-of-the-road firmness level and features that make it appropriate for sleepers of all shapes and sizes. It’s an excellent choice for those who enjoy the Original Casper’s balance of conforming support but want more bounce.

Both the GhostBed 3D Matrix and the Casper Hybrid are hybrid mattresses with a relatively similar firmness. They both attempt to provide pressure relief without sacrificing support, especially with Casper’s Zoned Support layer. We think the GhostBed may be the better choice for strict side sleepers than the Casper Hybrid.

GhostBed 3D vs Purple Hybrid

Purple Hybrid

The Purple Hybrid features the Original Purple mattress’s comfort grid but adds responsive support coils at the core for improved airflow, responsiveness and durability.

The Purple Hybrid Matrix uses the Purple Grid to provide increased airflow and cooling technologies, slightly better than the cooling layers of the GhostBed. Both mattresses use polymer layers to provide pressure relief for multiple sleeping positions. The Purple Hybrid provides three options of firmness, allowing sleepers to customize the feel of their mattress.

Our Final Take

The GhostBed 3D Matrix Hybrid Mattress is a solid bed that brings a lot to the table, which explains its significant price point. The bed was engineered to suit back sleepers and most side sleepers, especially if you tend to stay hot at night. However, we think heavier stomach sleepers may want to try something a little firmer to ensure they get adequate support.
