Comparing Helix Luxe Mattresses

We take a look at the Helix Luxe collection to help you decide if one of these models could be the right new mattress for you.

The Helix Luxe line consists of upgraded versions of each of the six standard hybrid mattresses. In addition to creating a taller mattress, the company also included a premium pillow top, a Tencel cover, zoned lumbar support and other features shared throughout the entire line. Between the six mattresses, sleepers of all sizes and sleep needs should be able to find a mattress that provides the right level of support and comfort, placing Helix among our best hybrid mattresses.

Sunset Luxe Mattress

  • Best For
    • Lightweight sleepers
    • Side sleepers
    • People who like a very plush, memory foam mattress feel
  • Price Range: $995-$2,249

The Sunset Luxe is the softest model in the Luxe line, placing it among our best soft and plush mattresses. Constructed with a Memory Plus Foam comfort layer, the bed’s medium-soft firmness level is comparable to the Moonlight Luxe, but it offers more contouring from the memory foam. The Sunset Luxe offers close conforming and pressure relief, making it the best choice in the lineup for lightweight sleepers and average-weight side sleepers who prefer a very soft feel. For more recommendations, check out our best mattresses for side sleepers.

Moonlight Luxe Mattress

  • Best For
      • Lightweight back and stomach sleepers
      • Average-weight side sleepers
      • People who need a soft mattress but prefer a supportive, bouncy feel
  • Price Range: $995-$2,249

The Moonlight has a soft firmness setting like the Sunset Luxe, earning a 4 on our mattress firmness scale of 1 to 10. Still, the Moonlight Luxe swaps out the Sunset’s memory foam comfort layer for Helix Dynamic Foam. This foam is a high-density, proprietary polyfoam that mimics the responsive, supportive feel of latex. As a result, the Moonlight is a better pick for stomach and back sleepers who prefer soft mattresses or who are lightweight. In addition to the zoned coil system, the Helix Dynamic Foam layers (it’s used in the transition layer, too) work to prevent sagging and encourage spinal alignment.

Midnight Luxe Mattress

  • Best For
      • All sleeping positions, but especially side sleepers
      • Average-weight sleepers
  • Price Range: $995-$2,249

The Helix Midnight Luxe is one of the most popular models in the Luxe collection because it won’t feel too soft or too firm to many sleepers. This quality, in combination with its memory foam comfort layer, helps it appeal to a variety of preferences and provides support for all sleeping positions. The memory foam contours closely to the body and is a better pick for average-weight side sleepers than the line’s other medium bed, the Dusk Luxe. The Midnight Luxe also works well for back and stomach sleepers who are average-weight and like the feel of memory foam. All of these qualities place the Midnight Luxe among our best mattresses for side sleepers, and it’s also a great option for combination sleepers.

Dusk Luxe Mattress

  • Best For
      • Back and stomach sleepers
      • Combination sleepers
      • People who are average-weight
  • Price Range: $995-$2,249

The closest model to the Dusk Luxe mattress is the Midnight Luxe, but the Dusk contains responsive, supportive Helix Dynamic Foam in the comfort layer instead of the Midnight’s contouring memory foam. If you sleep primarily on your back or stomach, you should feel additional support in the lower back and hips from the Midnight’s more responsive foam layers. If you prefer something even firmer or have experienced your hips sinking into mattresses in the past, you might want to consider the Twilight Luxe or the Dawn Luxe. Note that the Helix Plus bed for the big and tall ranks among our best firm mattresses.

Twilight Luxe Mattress

  • Best For
      • Average-weight sleepers
      • Heavyweight sleepers
      • Back and stomach sleepers with pain
      • People who need a firm mattress but like memory foam
  • Price Range: $995-$2,249

The Twilight Luxe is one of the firmest mattresses in this lineup, but its top layer of gel memory foam gives it a slow response to pressure that allows you to sink into the bed for some pressure relief. You should feel a gentle hug around sensitive areas of the body on this mattress, but you’re not going to sink in as deeply as you would on the Sunset Luxe or the Midnight Luxe. Both of those beds also contain memory foam.

Dawn Luxe Mattress

  • Best For
      • Average-weight sleepers
      • Heavyweight sleepers
      • Strict stomach sleepers
  • Price Range: $995-$2,249

The Dawn Luxe has the firmest structure of all the models in the Helix Luxe line. It’s firm, and our team ranked it 8/10 on our 1-10 firmness scale. Its combination of pocketed coils, a high-density base and two layers of responsive, supportive Helix Dynamic Foam cause it to have a very even and supportive feel when you lie down. These qualities make it best for strict stomach sleepers and back sleepers, and it’s supportive enough for both average-weight and heavyweight sleeper types. *Here at Mattress Nerd, we classify lightweight sleepers as weighing < 130 lbs., while average-weight sleepers are between 130-230 lbs., and heavyweight sleepers weigh over 230 lbs.

The right Helix Luxe mattress for you depends on your body type, sleeping position and individual preferences. The softer Sunset Luxe and Moonlight Luxe mattresses tend to work well for lightweight body types, while the Midnight Luxe and Helix Dusk Luxe work well for average-weight body types. The Twilight Luxe and Dawn Luxe work well for plus-size sleepers. There is, however, some crossover, which we’ll explain below.

The Sunset Luxe and Moonlight Luxe offer the most cushioning and conforming, but they’re also soft. This makes them a good choice for lightweight sleepers and average-weight side sleepers, but other sleeper types may find their bodies sinking excessively into the top comfort layers.

All Luxe mattresses can technically work for average-weight body types, so customers will want to narrow down their options by considering their primary sleeping position. If you sleep on your side, the Twilight Luxe and Dawn Luxe will feel too firm. If you sleep on your back, the Moonlight Luxe, Dusk Luxe and Dawn Luxe have supportive Helix Dynamic Foam in the comfort portion that will provide extra lift. If you sleep on your stomach, opt for one of the firmer Luxe models: the Twilight Luxe or the Dawn Luxe.

Plus-size sleepers have fewer choices when it comes to the Helix Luxe line, as only three models can suit this weight class. The cushioning in the Dusk, Twilight or Dawn should feel comfortable to plus-size side sleepers, but heavyweight back and stomach sleepers may experience sagging on anything other than the firm Dawn Luxe and Twilight Luxe.

Other Considerations: Cooling, Back Pain and Couples

If there’s one strength each of these mattresses share, it’s temperature neutrality. The Duradense-wrapped coil layer promotes strong airflow to help the mattress encourage temperature regulation, and the stretchy, breathable cover complements this quality.

All six beds also have excellent edge support thanks to a perimeter of reinforced coils, meaning that couples can comfortably spread out on a small bed. The pillow top allows every Luxe mattress to have better motion isolation than most hybrid mattresses, but the Luxe models that contain memory foam (the Sunset, Midnight and Twilight) will have the lowest motion transfer.

If you struggle with aches and pains, it’s especially important to choose a Helix Luxe model that is appropriate for your sleeping position and body weight. Those with joint pain who are deciding between several models should opt for one that contains memory foam, as this material will contour closely to your body’s joints and curves for pressure relief and cradling.

How Construction Impacts The Feel of the Mattress

Although a quick glance at the chart above may make it seem like the Helix Luxe mattresses are almost identical, they each have a unique feel that’s created primarily by the bed’s overall firmness and the type of foam used in the top comfort layer. The Helix Luxe beds with memory foam top layers have more contouring than those that contain Helix Dynamic Foam, but it isn’t a prototypical memory foam feel. Rather it’s a soft, contouring, neutral-foam feel. The beds with Helix Dynamic Foam in the comfort portion feel bouncier, more supportive and more responsive due to the latex-like nature of this material.

Helix Mattress Warranty, Shipping, Sleep Trial & Returns

Helix Luxe mattresses ship free to the United States and Canada. The Luxe mattress should arrive as a bed-in-a-box within five to seven business days after placing an order. Helix Sleep does not offer White Glove delivery at this time, so customers will need to unbox the bed themselves. After unboxing, the bed will need to air out in a well-ventilated room for about 24 hours. This will help any off-gassing odor dissipate and give the mattress space to expand to its full size.

Helix offers a 100-night sleep trial period with all Helix Luxe mattresses, which begins the day the bed is delivered. A 30-night break-in period is required, so you’ll need to sleep on the mattress for at least 30 nights prior to initiating a return with Helix. Helix will send you a free firm or soft mattress topper if you don’t like the feel of the mattress, or you can initiate a return and arrange for a mattress pickup with Helix Sleep for a full refund.

The Helix Luxe mattresses are backed by a 15-year warranty. The warranty covers sagging and indentations in the surface that are 1” or deeper. It also covers physical defects that cause the materials to split or crack and manufacturing defects in the mattress cover. If you find a defect, you must ship it to Helix Sleep at your own expense. If Helix Sleep confirms the defect, they will reimburse you for shipping fees, repair or replace the mattress, and ship it to your address for no additional charge.

Helix FAQs

Why do I have to sleep on a Helix Luxe mattress for 30 nights before I can return it?

The foams in every Helix mattress are cut fresh to order, and they can feel firm and stiff for the first few weeks of use. Helix Sleep suggests consistent use for three to four weeks to encourage the mattress to soften to the firmness level it’s designed to be. The break-in period in the return policy encourages customers to give the bed a full month to adjust to their bodies before making a decision about whether it’s right for them.

What’s the difference between Helix standard and Helix Luxe versions?

It can be helpful to think of each Helix Luxe bed as a more luxurious, upgraded version of a Helix standard mattress. Each standard Helix bed has a corresponding Luxe model, like the Helix Twilight and Helix Twilight Luxe, for example.

The four primary differences between the standard and Luxe models are the price, construction, coils and pillow top. All Luxe models are more expensive than the Helix standard models by roughly $600 to $700. The standard models have four layers and measure 12” tall, while the Luxe mattresses by Helix have six layers and measure 14” tall.

The Helix Luxe beds also have a special feature for spinal support: high-grade, zoned support lumbar coils. These are softer at the head and shoulders, yet have a firmer feel around the torso for lumbar support. Lastly, every Helix Luxe mattress contains a quilted pillow top that provides added comfort and pressure relief for all sleeper types.

How long do Helix Luxe mattresses last?

Based on the construction of the Luxe models and the average lifespan of similar hybrid beds, we expect the Helix Luxe mattresses to have better-than-average durability. You can expect a lifespan of roughly seven to 10 years.

Key Details About Helix

Helix Sleep is a mattress company that began selling bedding in 2015, and they introduced the Luxe mattresses in 2018. Based in New York, the company has one showroom in the Flat Iron District but partners with other stores across the country, like CB2, to provide additional showrooms.

The company is known for its selection of more than 10 hybrid mattresses, each of which is specifically designed for a unique sleeping position and body weight combination. They have six core mattresses: the Sunset, Midnight, Twilight, Moonlight, Dusk and Dawn. Once you decide which of the main models is right for you, you can decide whether you want the standard model or the Luxe model.

Helix is different from other bed-in-a-box mattress brands because of the sleep quiz on HelixSleep.com that uses ergonomic and biomechanic data to help you determine which of their mattress models will work best.
