Helix Twilight Mattress Review

Materials: Foam & coils

Firmness: 7.5

Warranty: 10 years

Trial Period: 100 nights

Price Range:$600–$1,349

The Mattress Nerd’s Take: The Helix collection of mattresses reminds us of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears.” In this classic fairy tale, Goldilocks has three beds to choose from, and she finds the one that is “just right.” In the case of Helix, sleepers choose from six standard models, ranging from the softest beds to the firmest, so you’re sure to find a great mattress to suit your body type and sleep style. The Helix Twilight is one of the firmest beds, specifically designed for side sleepers. However, in our testing lab, we found it to be best for average-weight and heavyweight back sleepers, as well as some stomach sleepers. Yes, the Twilight offers special pressure-point relief for side-sleeping, but we think it could be too firm for some folks, especially lightweight side sleepers.

For those looking for an upscale version of this mattress, Helix offers a complementary Luxe line with premium features such as zoned lumbar support. The Helix Twilight Luxe is a slightly pricier bed with an added pillow top and zoned coils. Read our review comparing the Helix Luxe mattresses for more information.

Is the Helix Twilight Mattress for You?

Who’s Going to Love It

  • Hot sleepers looking for a temperature-neutral mattress
  • Back and stomach sleepers requiring pressure relief
  • Average-weight and heavyweight sleepers

Who Should Steer Clear

  • Memory foam purists who enjoy sleeping “in” their mattress
  • Lightweight sleepers may find the Twilight to feel too firm
  • Those who prefer a soft mattress

Who is the Helix Twilight Mattress Best For?

Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  3 4 3
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): 5 4 5
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  4 3 3

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Back Sleepers

Of all the sleeping positions, the Helix Twilight works best for average-weight and heavyweight back sleepers. Why? It’s so firm that it easily keeps the hips elevated and the spine in its optimal “S” curve—meaning less back pain in the morning. Since this mattress is a 7.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, it may feel too firm for lightweight back sleepers, who may fare better on one of the softer Helix models, such as the Sunset, Moonlight, Midnight or Dusk. For more recommendations, check out our top picks for the best mattresses for back sleepers.

Stomach Sleepers

For lightweight sleepers, the stomach-sleeping position is the best for you on the Helix Twilight. Thanks to this mattress’s extra firmness, most average-weight stomach sleepers should also find plenty of support for their hips on this bed, without the pelvis pressing too deeply into the mattress and bowing their spine out of alignment. However, heavyweight stomach sleepers still may not find enough support on the Twilight, and we would recommend the firmest Dawn model or the Helix Plus, designed especially for the big and tall. Spend the entire night on your tummy? Then check out our best mattresses for stomach sleepers.

Side Sleepers

While the Twilight is engineered specifically to provide pressure-point relief for side sleepers, we would not include it as one of our top picks for best mattresses for side sleepers. In our sleep lab, we found that even our average-weight tester felt too much pressure at his shoulders, meaning the bed could be too firm for average-weight side sleepers, and certainly too solid for lightweight side sleepers. But heavyweight side sleepers may fare just fine atop the Twilight, as they will register the mattress to feel softer than lighter weight folks.

Combination Sleepers

Since the Helix Twilight only features one layer of Memory Plus Foam up top, it allows combination sleepers—those who change positions throughout the night—to move from one position to the next without feeling too “stuck” in the mattress. In addition, the individually wrapped coils at the base give the bed some extra bounce. Overall, our testers felt that the Twilight lives up to its claim to be good for tossers and turners regardless of whether they’re lightweight, average-weight or heavyweight. For our take on the most responsive mattresses, check out our best mattresses for combination sleepers.

Helix Mattress Video Review

How Does the Helix Twilight Mattress Feel?

Firmness

Compared to the other Helix standard models (the Sunset, Moonlight, Midnight and Dusk), the Twilight is a super-firm mattress, coming in at a 7.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale, with 10 being the firmest. Still, it doesn’t out-score the Dawn, the firmest mattress in the Helix collection  registering an 8 out of 10 on our firmness scale. This level of support makes the Twilight a great option for average-weight or heavyweight back sleepers who need more lift in the lumbar area. The Twilight should also work well for stomach sleepers who require extra support for their hips to keep their spines in the optimal “S” curve alignment.

While the top layer of the Twilight feels more contouring—more like a Tempur-Pedic mattress—it is still quite firm and doesn’t allow you to sink in like classic memory foam. Despite this added layer of cushioning, some average-weight and heavyweight side sleepers could feel too much pressure at their shoulders and hips. Lightweight sleepers may register this mattress to be too firm. Thus, we would only recommend stomach sleeping on the Twilight for lightweight folks. If you are looking for a mattress with more gentle contouring around the pressure points, see the best soft mattresses.

Temperature

We wouldn’t include the Twilight among our best cooling mattresses, but we would give it high marks for temperature regulation. Like most hybrid beds, the Twilight’s individually wrapped coils allow for airflow throughout the mattress. In addition, its breathable Soft Touch Design Cover adds to its temperature neutrality. While the Twilight does not include any additional cooling features (such as gel-infused foam), it should keep average sleepers feeling refreshed throughout the night.

Support

Thanks to its extra firmness at a 7.5 out of 10, with 10 being the firmest mattress, the Helix Twilight scores high on support for average-weight sleepers of all sleeping positions. However, it may feel too firm for some lightweight sleepers, and it may not be firm enough for some heavyweight sleepers who spend the majority of the night on their stomach. Since this mattress is a hybrid bed with a mix of high-quality foam plus coils, it should last longer than an all-foam mattress. We predict the Twilight should have a shelf life of seven to 10 years. Its solid construction also ensures above-average edge support, or the mattress’s ability to support people who like to sit or lie along its edges. For more supportive choices, see the best mattress for heavy people.

Construction: What’s Under the Surface?

Each of the beds in the Helix collection is designed for a certain sleeper type. The Twilight caters to side sleepers who prefer a firmer feel, yet also need pressure relief at their hips and shoulders. To achieve this balance of softer cushioning and firmer support, the Twilight features contouring foam as its top layer, then transitions to supportive individual coils at the base. This hybrid design combined with a breathable cover should also help hot sleepers sleep cool and refreshed all night long. For other mattresses that can accommodate hot sleepers and various positions, see the best hybrid mattresses.

Layer #1: Soft Touch Design Cover: Every Helix mattress comes with a special Soft Touch Design cover that has a light, stretchy feel. It is also optimized for airflow, which should appeal to hot sleepers looking for extra cooling capabilities in their new mattress.

Layer #2: Comfort Layer: Beneath the soft cover, you’ll find a layer of Helix’s proprietary Memory Plus Foam. This special foam comfort layer allows for the mattress to relieve pressure on sensitive joints such as the shoulders and hips. Yet, it still has a firm feel, making it a great option for side sleepers who prefer a firmer feel.

Layer #3: Transition Layer: Sandwiched between the Memory Plus foam layer and the individual coils, a premium polyfoam layer gently transitions and lowers the body from the top foam layer onto the individually wrapped coils, which provide both ergonomic support and additional cushioning. While hybrid mattresses are easy to move around on, memory foam absorbs motion between partners throughout the bed. If you are a couple looking for motion isolation, see the best mattress for couples.

Layer #4: Individually Wrapped Coils: People who require additional support prefer a hybrid mattress with individually wrapped coils in lieu of an all-foam bed. With the Helix Twilight, hundreds of individual coils cradle your body while also limiting motion transfer. In addition, this layer features a reinforced perimeter for added edge support, which is the bed’s ability to support those who sit on the edge of the bed, or even sleep along the edge. Our testers give this mattress the highest marks for edge support, meaning you should feel secure as you sit on the edge and tie your shoes in the morning.

Layer #5: Base Layer: To preserve the integrity of the mattress, the Twilight features a base layer of DuraDense foam. This bottom foam layer provides base support and helps to extend the life of the mattress. We predict this high-quality mattress will last seven to 10 years.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

It only took our team just one minute and 30 seconds to unbox the Helix Twilight, making it one of the easier beds to unpackage. We also detected very little off-gassing smells. Should you detect a faint “new mattress” scent, it typically takes a bed in a box about 24 hours to dissipate, especially if you place the bed in a well-ventilated room with a fan. The best online mattress brands will have similar unboxing experiences and comparable shipping procedures.

Helix ships its beds for free to all 50 states in the U.S., but there’s an additional $250 charge to Canada. After placing the order, you can expect your new mattress to arrive within three to 15 business days, as the mattress company assembles each bed by hand in the USA.

Warranty

Each Helix Mattress is covered by a 10-year limited warranty. Customers can send the Helix Twilight back for a refund if there’s a manufacturing error with the mattress, such as excessive body indentations. Helix Sleep asks that shoppers keep a copy of their receipt after purchasing their mattress in case they decide they need to make a warranty claim.

In addition, the Helix Plus and Helix Luxe mattresses are covered by a 15-year limited warranty. This limited warranty gives certain legal rights and covers all manufacturing defects. For more information, read our full Helix mattress warranty breakdown.

Trial Period & Returns

Starting the day that your Helix Twilight arrives at your door, you’ll have 100 nights to try out the mattress. This amount of time is standard in the online mattress industry. Note that it takes your body up to 30 days to adjust to a new mattress, especially if you’ve had your old bed for a long time. Still don’t like it after a month? You can send the mattress back to Helix after the 30-day break-in period, but before the 100-day trial period is over, for a full refund, Be sure to check out the most common Helix mattress complaints and read our solutions and alternatives.

Comparing the Helix Mattresses

Helix Twilight vs. Helix Dawn

The Helix Twilight and the Helix Dawn are sister mattresses in the collection of Helix standard models. They are both the firmest mattresses in the lineup, with the Twilight ranking a 7.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, and the Dawn coming in at a full 8 out of 10. So how do you choose between these high-quality beds?

The Twilight provides pressure-point relief at the hips and shoulders, targeting side sleepers who prefer a more firm mattress. Unlike the Twilight, the Dawn features two layers of Helix Dynamic Foam that give the bed a bouncy, supportive feel. Thanks to a layer of memory foam on top, the Twilight feels more cushioning and snugly. We feel that both beds work well for back and stomach sleepers, but the Dawn is best for combination sleepers, and the Twilight is best for those who want to feel cradled by their mattress.

Helix Dawn Mattress

The Helix Dawn is designed for stomach and back sleepers, providing firm support while protecting the spine. With little give and less pressure relief than softer mattresses, the Helix Dawn makes it easy to move around on the mattress.

Helix Twilight vs. Helix Midnight

If you already know about Helix Sleep, you’ve probably heard about its most popular bed, the Helix Midnight. That’s because it’s the brand’s most versatile, medium-firm mattress that works for all sleep positions. The Midnight also balances a classic memory foam feel with the responsiveness of a pocketed coil core and a transition layer of latex-like Helix Dynamic Foam

The Helix Twilight is more of a niche mattress for individuals who prefer a super-firm surface—a 7.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale, with the Midnight ranking a 6 out of 10. It also works best for average-weight to heavyweight back and stomach sleepers, as well as some side sleepers who prefer a firmer surface. However, we feel the Twilight may feel too firm for lightweight folks, who will fare better atop the Midnight.

Helix Twilight vs. Helix Plus

Like the Helix Plus mattress, the Twilight can also accommodate heavyweight sleepers, especially those who are strict back sleepers and require extra support. The firmer quality of the Twilight ensures the hips remain elevated, helping to keep the spine in alignment and free of pain.

Still, the Twilight falls short for heavyweight side sleepers, who may feel too much pressure on their hips and shoulders, as well as plus-size stomach sleepers (over 300 lbs.), who may not find enough support in this standard model. Enter the Helix Plus: Designed for the big and tall, the Plus is a supportive and cooling mattress that works for all sleeping positions.

Helix vs. Other Brands

Helix Twilight vs. Purple

It’s almost unfair to compare the Purple mattress to any other bed because of its proprietary Hyper-Elastic Polymer Grid, which gives it a unique feel unlike any other mattress. Some folks love its squishy, floating sensation, but for others, it’s just too new and innovative.

Traditionalists will prefer the Helix Twilight, with its classic construction of premium foams atop a supportive innerspring core. As to firmness, the Twilight is firmer than the Purple and better for stomach sleepers. But hot sleepers will prefer the air channels in the Purple Grid, which we feel will be more durable than the Twilight.

Purple Mattress

The Purple mattress is temperature-neutral with a floating feel, thanks to its 2" Purple Grid and dual-layered comfort foam base. The Purple Grid is made with hyper-elastic polymer, which is a gel-like substance that provides lots of pressure relief.

Helix Twilight vs. Brooklyn Signature

Both the Helix Twilight and the Brooklyn Signature mattresses are high-quality hybrid beds. But they have much different firmness levels: While the Twilight only comes as an extra-firm 7.5 out of 10, the Brooklyn Signature is available in three customizable firmness options—soft, medium or firm.

Comparable in price and made-to-order, both beds do well with temperature regulation, but the Brooklyn Signature also features two layers of cooling gel. While the Twilight scores higher in motion isolation, making it better for couples, the Brooklyn Signature appeals to a wider range of sleeping positions.

Helix Twilight vs. Nectar

The Nectar mattress is very popular and has some similarities to the Helix Twilight. Since they both have memory foam as a top layer, both possess a slower-moving feel on the surface. Still, the Twilight is a hybrid bed made of both foam and coils, making it a firmer 7.5 out of 10—compared to the Nectar’s all-foam medium-firmness, or 6.5 out of 10.

How do you decide between the two? The Nectar is more expensive and works better for side sleepers who require more pressure-point relief. Those who are on a budget and prefer a firmer mattress that sleeps cool will be more comfortable with the Helix Twilight.

The Nectar is a value memory foam mattress that excels at providing pressure relief and minimizing motion transfer. The medium-firm feel is ideal for cradling pressure points. Plus, it comes with a yearlong trial period and Lifetime warranty.

Helix Mattress FAQs

What will the Helix Twilight feel like?

That depends on your body type and your sleeping position. For example, lightweight individuals may find the Helix Twilight to be too firm. But it will feel softer for average-weight and heavyweight sleepers. Helix designs each mattress with a particular sleeper in mind, and their beds range from plush to firm. The company encourages people to take its complimentary sleep quiz to find the best mattress based on body type, sleeping position and mattress preferences.

Can you flip a Helix Twilight mattress?

While you can rotate the Helix Twilight mattress, you should not flip this bed. Why? If you flip the bed, you would be sleeping on the hard support layers at the base, the innerspring coils, rather than the comfort layers, which are meant to stay on top.

Do you need a box spring with the Helix Twilight?

It’s just fine to place the Helix Twilight on a bed frame or other base. Thus, you do not need to use a box spring.

What’s the Bottom Line?

Helix Sleep claims that its Twilight mattress is designed for side sleepers who prefer a firmer mattress. We don’t disagree, but we find that this bed works best for average-weight to heavyweight back sleepers, especially those with back pain. Yes, it’s even supportive enough for stomach-sleeping, which could be the best position for lightweight sleepers atop the Twilight. Other benefits include excellent edge support and solid motion isolation to keep couples resting peacefully through the night. And for hot sleepers, the breathable cover and enhanced air flow from the innerspring coils should keep them cool and comfy. Finally, the feel of the Twilight strikes a nice balance between a slower-moving memory foam feel up top, and a nice bounce from the innerspring coils at the core.
