Casper vs. GhostBed Mattress Comparison

Need help picking the right memory foam mattress for you? Casper and GhostBed are two well-know and well-loved affordable mattress brands. Check out our comparison to see which bed is right for you.

Comparing GhostBed & Casper Mattresses

Ghostbed and Casper are two of the most popular memory foam bed-in-a-box mattresses that feature high-quality foam layers, targeted comfort and free shipping and returns. With pressure-relieving foam and uniquely-designed zoned support, the Casper is a great choice for side and back sleepers. If you find yourself too warm at night, the Ghostbed could be your solution with its premium cooling technology and air-wicking fabric.

In this article, we’ll compare the two flagship models from GhostBed and Casper to help you pinpoint which mattress is best for you based on your sleep needs and preferences.

  • The GhostBed is the best mattress for stomach sleepers, while the Casper Original is the better mattress for side sleepers.
  • The GhostBed features latex foam in its construction to provide additional bounce and make it easier for combination sleepers to change positions.
  • The feel of the mattresses will differ. The GhostBed will have a more neutral foam feel while the Zoned Support of the Casper will be softer under the pressure points and firmer to support the spine.
  • Sleepers will sink further into the Casper for more cradling around the body, compared to a bit less plush sinkage with the GhostBed.

  • Both mattresses incorporate memory foam into their construction to provide body contouring and support.
  • Both mattresses can accommodate lightweight and average-weight sleepers. The Zoned Support of the Casper and the dense base of the GhostBed provide strong support for the lower back and keep the hips lifted, qualities in the best mattress for back sleepers.
  • Both mattresses utilize proprietary technology to keep sleepers cool at night, specifically gel memory foam in the GhostBed and airscape open-cell foam to increase airflow.

Deciding Between GhostBed & Casper

Firmness / Feel

Mattress firmness is measured on a scale from 1 to 10. Softer beds are closer to the lower end of the scale and are suited for side and some back sleepers, while firmer mattresses are on the higher end and are better for stomach and back sleepers.

The GhostBed rates at 6.5 on the firmness scale, and the Casper Original is a 6, making them both good choices for back sleepers. The GhostBed is better for stomach sleepers, while the Casper Original is geared toward side sleepers. If you find yourself changing positions frequently, see our picks for the best mattress for all sleeping positions.

Motion Isolation

The best mattresses for couples include superior motion isolation. When you shift in your sleep, or you decide to get in or out of bed, the motion can travel across the mattress and disturb your partner. The GhostBed and the Casper Original are both mattresses with dense foam layers   that reduce motion transfer, making them good options for couples who want motion isolation.

Edge Support

Edge support refers to the level of firmness around your mattress’s border, helping to retain its shape and maximizing the amount of mattress you can sleep on. Without decent edge support your mattress can begin to sag and it may be more difficult to get out of bed. Fortunately, both of these beds come with decent edge support, but the GhostBed is a little better due to its support perimeter around the cover and slightly firmer foam construction.

Pressure Relief

You need a mattress that will relieve pressure points throughout your body to ensure you’re adequately supported while you sleep. The Casper Original has a Zoned Support Layer that delivers targeted pressure relief on your hips and back, reducing the chance of aches or pains. The GhostBed’s contouring memory foam also provides ample pressure relief, but the Casper dedicates all three zones towards targeted support.

Spine Alignment

Sleeping in a bed that doesn’t promote spinal alignment can negatively affect your sleep experience and lead to back pain. The GhostBed’s construction is designed to keep stomach and back sleepers’ spines aligned, while the Casper Original is better suited for side sleepers with zoned support to cushion shoulders.

Both the GhostBed and the Casper Original feature strong foam bases to support the rest of the mattress and to prevent them from sagging or losing their bounce as time goes on. These mattresses are guaranteed to last a long time, with your purchase protected by a warranty.

Most memory foam mattresses tend to sleep “hot” because they hug you while you sleep. However, both of these mattresses come with proprietary cooling technology in their construction that pulls heat away from your body, keeping you cooler throughout the night. For other mattresses for hot sleepers, see our list of the best cooling mattresses.

If you sleep especially hot it might be worth considering a hybrid or innerspring model. To learn more about the hybrid models of these brands check out our GhostBed Mattress Comparison and Casper Mattress Comparison.

GhostBed Construction

The GhostBed mattress has a 7.5-inch high-density base layer to deliver optimal spine alignment and long-lasting durability. Above that is a 2-inch gel memory foam layer to wick heat away from your body and keep you cool.

The next layer up is 1.5 inches of aerated latex foam, which further transfers heat away from your body and provides a springy feel. Finally, the top layer is a plush cover consisting of a viscose and polyester blend for maximum comfort.

See Latex vs. Memory Foam to learn more about the differences in materials.

Casper Construction

The Casper Original Mattress begins with 5 inches of support foam as a base layer to keep the mattress stable and prevents sagging. On top of that is a 1.5-inch layer of transition foam, called the Zoned Support Layer.

This provides targeted support for your hips and back, while offering softer support around your shoulders to accommodate side sleepers. The next layer up is made of 1.5 inches of responsive memory foam to provide additional contouring for your body.

Finally, the mattress is topped with 1.5 inches of open-cell memory foam to wick away heat from your body and to provide pressure relief and contouring, which makes it easier to get in and out of bed.

Our Final Take: GhostBed vs Casper

Both the GhostBed and the Casper are great examples of memory foam mattresses, but depending on your sleep preferences, one may be better suited than the other. The GhostBed is a good option for stomach and bed sleepers who like firmer mattresses and a little bit of bounce. The Casper Original is great for people who still want a medium-firm sleep surface but prefer to sleep on their back or side. It’s also great for reducing hip and back pain.
