The Mattress Nerd’s Take: As Casper’s newest mattress and take on “plush comfort,” the Nova Hybrid should feel soft for those who want to sink into their mattress. Marketed as their “plushest mattress with cloud-like support and comfort,” the Nova has a mid-range price point (it’s more expensive than the Original Casper mattress yet less pricey than the Casper Wave Hybrid), a responsive mattress we found to be more firm than advertised.
Our Nerds found the Casper Zoned support to provide a contouring yet structured sleeping surface for most back and stomach sleepers. We think the Nova Hybrid is a great option for lightweight and average-weight stomach and back sleepers and those looking for the soft, sinking feeling of memory foam, balanced by the support of the coil system. Heavyweight sleepers may find this mattress lacks support; its plush feel may not suit some sleepers who prefer to remain on top of their mattress.
|Body Type:||BACK SLEEPERS||STOMACH SLEEPERS||SIDE SLEEPERS|
|Lightweight (< 130 lbs):||4||4||3|
|Average weight (130 – 230 lbs):||4||4||3|
|Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):||3||4||2|

The Casper Nova may be a great option for back sleepers. Avoiding unwanted and painful pressure is necessary for a good night’s sleep. Primary back sleepers should find the Nova Hybrid relieves pressure for lightweight sleepers, and only some pressure appears in the shoulders and sides for heavier sleepers.
Casper is known for its zoned support, which should provide support under the lower back and hips. If you suffer from back pain, be sure to read our article on best mattress for back pain.
Similarly to back sleepers, most stomach sleepers should feel properly supported and comfortable on the zoned support layers of the Casper Nova. Sleepers can avoid improper curving of the spine when lying facedown on the Casper Nova. You can also avoid neck pain by picking the right pillow.
If you are a side sleeper, the most important feature in a new mattress is pressure relief around your shoulders and hips as they press into the mattress layers. Heavier side sleepers may find unwanted pressure as they sink through the top comfort layers and into the firmer base layers.
Average weight and lightweight side sleepers should be able to keep their spines aligned along the natural curve. While Casper advertises this mattress as plush comfort, we found that lighter side sleepers did not receive enough cradling around the sharp pressure points to remain comfortable.
While the Casper Nova may not provide the best support for side sleepers, its hybrid construction and plush upper memory foam layers should help sleepers change positions and remain comfortable, especially those who sleep on their stomachs and backs.
After testing, we found the Casper Nova to be very responsive. The top memory foam layers quickly respond and change to fit your body shape. The mattress moves with the body and conforms as needed to fit your sleeping position, with a bouncy feeling as you shift.
The supportive hybrid model makes it easier to move around on the mattress and get in and out of the bed. The natural bounce keeps you from feeling stuck in the mattress, and you should remain level on top of the surface.
While this is Casper’s plusher hybrid mattress, we found it to still be medium-firm. At Mattress Nerd, we measure mattresses on a firmness scale of 1-10, with one ten as the firmest rating.The Nova is firm enough to support back and stomach sleepers, but the softer layers on top provide some cradling around the body. We give the firmness a 6/10 firmness level, because it still delivers too much pressure for most side sleepers.
With the top two airscape layers dedicated to cooling and reducing body heat, we expected the Nova to contend as one of the best cooling mattresses. While we did not find it cool to the touch, the aerated layers and hybrid design takes the necessary steps to keep airflow moving.
A memory foam mattress without coils would be more likely to trap heat. Hot sleepers may find the thicker cover to be warmer they desire but overall the Nova should prevent sleepers from waking up too hot at night.
The Casper Nova is a good mattress option for couples and co-sleepers because its design has the motion isolating qualities of memory foam and the stable structure of an innerspring mattress. We found that when one partner moved in and out of bed, the other partner remained undisturbed. Sinking into the plush cover and memory foam layers absorbed all motion. Motion was contained besides feeling a slight dip in the bed when moving in and out.
While this mattresses excelled at motion isolation, we were surprised to find it lacked quality edge support. When sitting on the edge of the mattress, lighter sleepers slid off the edge and heavier sleepers sank to the base. For larger couples or those trying to maximize their space on top of the mattress, the Nova is lacking in edge support. While Casper hybrid mattresses should have better edge support than the original memory foam, we found the softer top layers may have led to the large amount of sinkage.
The Casper Nova is a plush mattress that comes in foam and hybrid styles.
Both types feature a cover that may be removable for machine-washing or spot cleaning. The mattresses have thick comfort layers for a cloud-like, conforming feel. A layer of AirScape foam with perforations increases breathability, and a second layer of AirScape foam further prevents overheating.
The transitional layer of the mattress features Casper’s Zoned Support Pro materials, which reinforces the comfort layers with seven support zones for targeted pressure relief. The bottom of the Casper Nova consists of pocketed coils reinforced around the edges for support or a durable foam layer at the base, depending on the model you choose.
Layer #1: Airscape Foam: The first layer in the Casper Nova is made of Airscape foam, also known as foam with holes perforated throughout. It helps prevent heat from being trapped in the layers of the mattress. This breathable foam layer is also found in the Casper Original, an all-foam mattress, keeping the mattress cooler.
Layer #2: Airscape Foam Layer 2: A second layer of airscape foam adds to the cooling properties of the bed. This layer is also softer under the shoulders and firmer under the lower back and hips, helping it support stomach and back sleepers.
Layer #3: Zoned Support Pro Layer: Another staple of Casper construction is the Zoned Support. Shoulders, waist, lower back and hips are given a little more support, keeping the spine straight. Another foam layer, this zoned support is divided into three sections of ergonomic support designed to encourage better pressure relief without sacrificing comfort.
Layer #4: Coil Layer: As a hybrid mattress, these pocketed coils give the mattress stability and increased support. They also increase airflow, reducing body heat.

Both the Casper Original and Casper Nova are available in hybrid and all foam models. The Casper Nova’s plush comfort is still relatively firm, making it a good choice for stomach and back sleepers. The Casper Original all-foam may better accommodate side sleepers, but is known as a good choice for most sleeping positions.
Zoned Support is found in both Casper mattresses will target pressure points and contour around the body. Softer foams around the shoulders and firmer foam around the torso will help a sleeper maintain spinal alignment.

The Casper Wave Hybrid is a slightly upgraded Casper mattress. The Nova is targeted to deliver pressure relief while the Wave includes additional Zoned support, more advanced and durable gel pods.
The Wave will feel more supportive and provide a balanced feel, whereas the Nova will be more plush and allow the sleeper to sink into the mattress more.

Although it is at a higher price point, the quality and durability associated with a Casper mattress is worth the investment to many sleepers. Hot sleepers should not suffer from overheating with this mattress, and back and stomach sleepers should find a supportive surface that protects their spine and provides pressure relief.
Generally speaking, lightweight and average weight sleepers in any position should do fine on this bed, but it doesn’t have the support that’s ideal for heavyweight sleepers.
It’s also not going to be a responsive mattress, so if you like some bounce while changing sleeping positions, the Casper Nova Hybrid probably isn’t the best mattress for you. If you like a plush, cradling feel, with a little bit of sinkage, this mattress could be perfect for you.
While a mattress cover isn’t required for you to enjoy your sleep on the Casper Wave Hybrid, it can certainly protect your mattress against spills and stains. Casper offers their own breathable mattress protector if interested.
