Layla Hybrid vs. Casper Nova Hybrid Comparison

We love these two luxury bed-in-a-box mattresses, but which one is the best mattress for you? That’s the question we answer in this Layla Hybrid vs. Casper Nova Hybrid mattress comparison.

Comparing Layla Hybrid Mattress & Casper Nova Hybrid Mattress

The Layla Hybrid and Casper Nova Hybrid are both upgraded versions of each brand’s original all-foam mattress model. The Layla Hybrid is a flippable mattress with an innerspring core. The Casper Nova Hybrid is a single-sided mattress with plush comfort foam, a Zoned Support layer, and a supportive coil base layer.

You’ll like the Casper Nova Hybrid if you’re looking for a conforming foam feel without the “trapping” feeling of traditional memory foam. It’s also a great mattress for hot sleepers, side sleepers, and those who are looking for a soft mattress with extra bounce. The Layla Hybrid is a better fit for couples who want motion isolation, as well as newbies to the bed-in-a-box world who want multiple firmness options: After all, the Layla Hybrid is essentially two beds in one!

  • Two of the foam layers in the Casper Nova Hybrid are divided into ergonomic zones that provide targeted support to different regions of your body. The level of support across the Layla is uniform. As a result, you might notice more lower back support on the Casper Nova Hybrid. For some of the most supportive mattresses, see the best mattresses for back pain.
  • The foam on top of the Casper Nova Hybrid is responsive—meaning it has a rapid bounce-back—while the memory foam layers on the Layla Hybrid have a more contouring feel and the “slow sink” typically associated with memory foam.
  • Layla and Casper use different cooling strategies in these mattresses. The Casper Nova Hybrid uses a layer of perforated foam above a layer of foam molded with deep channels, which drastically improves airflow. The Layla Hybrid is infused with copper and gel, both of which absorb and redistribute excess body heat.

  • The Layla Hybrid and Casper Nova Hybrid both have a conforming feel, and both have the added element of bounce from the coil support systems.
  • We think these mattresses share a similar measure of pressure relief, particularly when we compare the Casper Nova Hybrid with the soft side of the Layla Hybrid.

Who the Layla Hybrid Mattress is Best For

Best For…

  • Couples will experience excellent motion isolation on the Layla Hybrid, due in part to the absorbent memory foam layers.

  • Back sleepers benefit from the support-and-cushion combination of memory foam and coils. For similar options, see the best mattresses for back sleepers.

May Not be Best For…

  • Those who prioritize edge support probably won’t feel very stable on the edges of the Layla Hybrid, especially on the soft side of the mattress.
  • Strict stomach sleepers’ hips will likely sink too deeply into the foam, which can cause pain in the lower back.

Deciding Between Layla Hybrid & Casper Nova Hybrid

Firmness / Feel

Mattress firmness can tell you a lot about how a mattress feels, and is rated on a firmness scale from 1 to 10 (1 is feather-soft and 10 is tabletop-firm). We gave the Casper Nova Hybrid a 6/10 firmness level, which is medium-firm. The top three layers of foam give the mattress a plush feel at first, but it gets firmer the further you sink into the bed.

Layla says the brand’s mattress is 4/10 on the medium-soft side and 7/10 on the medium-firm side. But we think the mattress is a little softer than advertised, and gave the soft side a 3/10 rating and the firm side a 6.5/10. Heavyweight sleepers may sink too far into both sides and rest against the firmer coil layer, though lightweight and average-weight sleepers should be fine. See the best mattresses for heavy people for better options.

It’s also worth noting that the Layla incorporates Variable Support technology (also known as copper). Under the pressure of body weight, copper causes the foam to become more firm. The firmer foam enhances support under areas that need to stay lifted, like your lower back.

Layla Hybrid Performance By Sleeping Position:
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  5 4 4
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): 5 3 4
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  4 2 3
Casper Nova Hybrid  Performance By Sleeping Position:
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  4 4 3
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): 4 4 3
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  3 4 2

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Motion Isolation

Do you share your bed? This category is for you. Mattresses that isolate motion reduce disruptions from your partner’s movements across the bed. Usually, beds achieve good motion isolation with absorbent materials like high-density foam.

The Layla Hybrid and Casper Nova Hybrid mattresses have similar constructions, but we found the Layla Hybrid to do a slightly better job at reducing motion transfer. That’s probably because the bouncy innerspring layer is sandwiched between high-density foam layers. If motion isolation is important for you, see the best mattresses for couples.

Edge Support

Edge support is another relevant category for couples who want to utilize the full surface of their mattress or anyone who hangs out near the edge of their bed. Layla is the clear winner in this category. It features two rows of heavy-duty coils around its perimeter, which keep you supported whether sitting or lying on the edge of the bed. In contrast, the Casper Nova Hybrid is framed with high-density foam that doesn’t provide as much support.

Pressure Relief

Both of these mattresses provide enough pressure relief for lightweight or average-weight sleepers, but heavyweight sleepers may experience too much sinkage for comfort. The firm side of the Layla Hybrid provides the least pressure relief, while the soft side of the Layla Hybrid and the Casper Nova Hybrid are neck-and-neck in pressure relief.

Overall, we’d recommend the soft side of the Layla Hybrid for side sleepers, and the firm side or the Casper Nova Hybrid to back sleepers. Neither is particularly well-suited as a mattress for stomach sleepers, who need a firm mattress that can keep the lower back lifted. Instead, the Layla Hybrid and Casper Nova Hybrid allow you to sink “into” the foam layers.

Spine Alignment

Spinal alignment is another way of discussing good sleeping posture. Your spine naturally has gentle curves when viewed from the side, and should look straight when viewed directly from behind. A mattress that maintains that neutral shape is better equipped to alleviate or prevent sleep-related back pain.

Both mattresses perform well in this category for back and side sleepers, particularly for those with lightweight and average-weight body types. Heavyweight side sleepers may experience more pressure at the shoulders and hips, but stomach sleepers need to watch out: Because these mattresses are topped with plush foam, stomach sleepers’ lower backs may arch out of alignment.

Hybrid mattresses typically last between five and seven years. The Layla Hybrid and Casper Nova Hybrid are made with high-quality materials, so they should last you at least that long. If not, keep in mind that both beds are protected by 10-year warranties.

Hybrid mattresses tend to generally sleep cool, thanks to the breathability of the coil support layer. The Layla Hybrid and Casper Nova Hybrid are no exception. Both mattresses feature breathable coil support layers, as well as extra cooling technologies.

Casper incorporates perforations (tiny holes) into the bed’s top layer and grooved channels in its transition layer. Layla uses gel and copper to absorb excess body heat and create a neutral temperature profile.

The Casper Nova Hybrid mattress cover is puffy, quilted, and made with up to 70 recycled bottles. It has a four-way stretch that enables you to sink deep into the plush top layer of Airscape foam. This layer is perforated (hole-punched), which pushes warm air away from your body each time you move. The second layer of Airscape foam is softer under your shoulders and ankles, so your hips stay supported and your widest pressure points remained cushioned.

Next up, a memory foam layer—called the Zoned Support Pro layer—is split into seven ergonomic zones and features grooved channels that enhance body contouring and airflow. Finally, the base of the mattress is made with pocketed coils that are encased in high-density polyurethane foam.
