The most basic of GhostBed’s options, the GhostBed Classic combines latex, memory foam, and support foam. It has a breathable cover and top layer, but none of the special cooling properties that are included in the other GhostBed mattresses.

The Classic has a medium-firm feel that’s most suitable for back and stomach sleepers with lightweight (< 130 lbs) or average-weight (130–230 lbs) body types. It’s the only GhostBed model with a latex layer, and it’s also the most affordable GhostBed mattress.

In our opinion, the Classic is the best GhostBed for individuals and couples who want a responsive, supportive, and relatively cooling foam and latex mattress at a budget-conscious price point. It’s not the best mattress for those with a heavyweight body type (> 230 lbs). Side sleepers will also want to find a mattress that better cushions their pressure points.

Like the original GhostBed, the Luxe is an all-foam mattress that incorporates more cooling features and additional bounce. The top layers of the bed include phase-change materials and gel memory foam that enhance both airflow and the bed’s ability to minimize heat retention. We even include it on our list of best cooling mattresses, despite a base layer of high-density foam

Unlike the other four GhostBed models, the Luxe has a medium firmness level (5/10 on the firmness scale), making it one of the best mattresses for side sleepers, those who enjoy the feel of a plush mattress, and those looking for excellent pressure relief. We also favor the Luxe for couples who want lots of motion isolation. It’s not the best mattress for stomach sleepers, who need a firmer bed that keeps their hips lifted.

The GhostBed Flex is a hybrid mattress that features a cover quilted with cooling fibers, several memory foam layers, a polyfoam transitional layer, and a coil support layer. Like the Classic, 3D Matrix, and Natural mattresses, it’s medium-firm. The only sleeping position we don’t recommend for the Flex is stomach sleeping—it’s a touch too soft to support most stomach sleepers.

Otherwise, this is a good option for average-weight side sleepers and back sleepers of all body types. The buoyant construction makes it one of the best GhostBed models for combination sleepers (those who change positions while they sleep).

Pricewise, the Flex is more expensive than the Classic, but not as expensive as the Luxe, Natural, or 3D Matrix.

Like the GhostBed Flex and Natural, the GhostBed 3D Matrix mattress combines foam with coils, but the 3D Matrix is slightly firmer than the Flex and Natural. It also does a better job of reducing motion transfer. Those qualities, combined with good edge support, make the 3D Matrix the best mattress for couples in this comparison.

The standout feature in this bed is the layer of gel polymer (called the 3D Matrix layer), which sits just beneath the cover. This layer has a gel-like composition that absorbs excess body heat and is designed to help sleepers stay “on” the mattress, not “in” it. The 3D Matrix is the only GhostBed model to include this patented material. This feature also contributes to the 3D Matrix being the most expensive of GhostBed’s mattresses. A Queen size costs $2,895.

The GhostBed Natural is GhostBed’s most eco-conscious mattress offering. It’s made with organic cotton, wool, Talalay latex, coils, and Dunlop latex. Despite having a 6.5/10 firmness level, it provides excellent pressure relief and spinal alignment. As such, it’s a good choice for all sleeping positions and body types.

The Natural also sleeps cooler than the other GhostBed mattresses, thanks to a construction with aerated latex, breathable coils, and no memory foam. The latex gives the bed a buoyancy that improves mobility across the mattress surface. For that reason, we consider it one of the best mattresses for combination sleepers, followed closely by the GhostBed Flex.

Heavyweight

Here at Mattress Nerd, we classify lightweight sleepers as weighing < 130 lbs, while average-weight sleepers are between 130–230 lbs, and heavyweight sleepers weigh > 230 lbs.

In general, the GhostBed Natural is the most accommodating mattress with a firmness level that’s suitable for sleepers of all body types, as well as couples, hot sleepers, and those who experience back pain. It’s followed closely by the 3D Matrix, which is a touch too soft for most stomach sleepers but works for everyone else. The Flex is one of the best mattresses for back sleepers, and the Classic is good for back and stomach sleepers under 230 lbs. The Luxe is the clear winner for side sleepers.

Other Considerations: Cooling, Back Pain, and Couples

Cooling

GhostBed labels the Luxe as their most cooling mattress, but we think that title should go to either the 3D Matrix or the Natural. Both have cooling top layers and breathable innerspring coils that allow for lots of airflow through the core of the mattress. Plus, the Natural is topped with breathable cotton and moisture-wicking wool, and the 3D Matrix is topped with naturally cooling gel polymer and Ghost Ice fabric.

That’s not to say that the Luxe isn’t cooling; it’s actually one of the coolest all-foam mattresses out there, but foam retains more heat than coils. If you love the conforming feel of memory foam, but don’t want to overheat, the Luxe and the Flex are excellent choices. The Classic is also a relatively cool mattress, thanks to a top layer of aerated latex.

Back Pain

Finding a mattress that prevents or helps to alleviate back pain depends on your body type and sleeping position. Stomach and back sleepers with back pain need a firmer mattress that keeps their hips and shoulders lifted in line with one another. The Classic and Natural models do the best job of keeping you “on top” of the mattress, though those with heavyweight body types will want an even firmer mattress (see our best mattresses for heavy people).

If you’re a side sleeper with back or shoulder pain, the Luxe is the best choice. The softer foam layers do the best job of keeping stress off of pressure points while keeping your spine aligned.

Couples

All of the GhostBed mattress models can work for couples, though the hybrid mattresses will provide the best support. The 3D Matrix mattress is our top pick for couples because it provides excellent motion isolation, edge support, and cooling, and it has a medium-firm feel that works for the broadest range of body types and sleeping positions

How Construction Impacts The Feel of the Mattress

The simple construction of the GhostBed Classic isn’t as fancy as the other options, but it gives the bed an appealing balanced foam feel. The aerated latex foam and gel memory foam aid in cooling and contouring for this medium-firm bed.

If you’re looking for an even more cooling memory foam mattress, the GhostBed Luxe is a premium option. The phase-change cover increases the bed’s ability to actively cool hot sleepers, and the lower density of its comfort layers make it a little more plush for side and lightweight sleepers.

The Flex is the first mattress in the lineup that swaps a polyfoam core for pocketed coils—essentially a coil version of the Luxe. The coils provide even more bounce, responsiveness, and cooling, making it an excellent option for couples who sleep hot and combination sleepers who don’t want to sink into the mattress while changing positions.

The 3D Matrix is a bit of a standalone with regard to construction. It’s designed to compete with the popular Purple mattress, as evidenced by the polymer grid underneath the cover. It has the most unique feel of the four options, and the top layer of foam features an egg crate construction over which the polymer material is spread. Think of it as an upgraded version of the Flex that feels like a soft, neutral foam bed rather than a pure memory foam bed.

Finally, the Natural is GhostBed’s eco-friendly mattress. The materials used in this model are the most durable of all the GhostBed mattresses. They’re also certified by GOLS, Oeko-Tex, GOTS, and the USDA. The wool and latex create a soft, cushioning effect, while the coils and support latex keeps sleepers’ spines in alignment and prevent them from sinking too far into the mattress. The Natural also has a bouncy feel, thanks to the buoyancy of latex and coils combined.

GhostBed Mattress Warranty, Shipping & Sleep Trial

Shipping

All GhostBed mattresses come with free shipping to the contiguous U.S. Beds typically ship within one or two business days after they’ve been purchased. GhostBed has distribution centers all across the U.S., so many customers receive their mattress within just two to five days of placing their order.

White glove delivery, which includes old mattress removal, in-home setup, and packaging removal, is available for an added fee of $199. White glove delivery is only available to customers in the contiguous USA.

GhostBed offers bed-in-a-box mattress shipping, so your new bed will arrive compressed, rolled, and packaged in a box. You’ll need to remove the mattress, unroll it on your bed frame, and carefully cut away the packaging. It will take up to 72 hours for the bed to reach its full size.

Sleep Trial

Every GhostBed comes with a 101-night sleep trial, which gives customers more than three months to test out the bed and determine if it’s right for them. If you don’t like the GhostBed you chose, you can return it for a full refund within the trial period. According to the return policy, you’ll need to sleep on the bed for at least 30 nights (GhostBed’s break-in period), prior to initiating a return.

Note: If you buy your mattress from anywhere other than GhostBed.com (for example, Amazon), the trial period may be different.

Warranty

GhostBed mattresses also come with a warranty, which varies in length depending on the mattress you buy. The GhostBed Original comes with a 20-year warranty and the Luxe, Flex, and 3D Matrix each come with a 25-year warranty, all of which are a huge upgrade when compared with the industry standard of 10 years of coverage.

The details of GhostBed’s mattress warranty coverage are similar for all four beds, and returns and replacements are prorated after year 10.

GhostBed Mattress FAQs

How long does a GhostBed mattress last?

Because GhostBed has only been around since 2015, it’s hard to say exactly how long its mattresses last. Based on customer reviews and similar all-foam and hybrid models, we expect them to last between seven and 10 years on average.

Can you flip a GhostBed mattress?

No, but GhostBed recommends rotating its mattresses every three to six months to prevent indentations and sagging.

Do GhostBeds off-gas?

All four GhostBeds ship as a bed-in-a-box, which means they’re compressed and rolled for shipping. If you notice a slight smell when unboxing, that’s called off-gassing, and it should go away within a few hours. The scent is non-toxic and not covered by the warranty.

Key Details About GhostBed

GhostBed is a mattress brand owned by Nature’s Sleep, established in 2015. The brand currently sells four high-quality mattresses, and is known for its cooling features and specialty foams, including latex foam and cooling gel foam. They’ve since expanded into offering other sleep products, like sheets, pillows, and bed frames. The name was chosen by founder Marc Werner because he was afraid of ghosts under his bed as a kid.
