Comparing GhostBed Mattresses

Compare all four of GhostBed’s mattresses to determine the best new mattress for your body type, sleeping position and personal preferences.

Why We Love GhostBed and Why You Will Too

GhostBed is a mattress brand owned by Nature’s Sleep, established in 2015. The brand currently sells four high-quality mattresses and is known for its all-foam and hybrid beds that incorporate cooling features and specialty foams, including latex foam and cooling gel foam. All four models are sold at varying price points to accommodate all sleepers.

GhostBed’s four mattress offerings include the Original GhostBed, the GhostBed Flex, the GhostBed Lux and the GhostBed 3D Matrix. The Original combines memory foam and latex in an all-foam construction, the Flex is the company’s top hybrid bed, the Luxe is a luxury foam bed with advanced cooling technology, and the 3D Matrix is a hybrid mattress designed to directly compete with industry competitor, Purple.

In this mattress comparison, we cover the details about each GhostBed mattress model, including construction, price, pros and cons, and who it’s made for. By the end of the article, you’ll be able to confidently decide which GhostBed model would be the best mattress for you.

GhostBed Original

  • Best For: Shoppers on a budget, lightweight and average weight sleepers, and shoppers who want a comfortable yet dense foam mattress.
  • Price Range: $545 to $1,195
  • Standout Feature: The Original combines a top layer of Dunlop latex foam with gel memory foam comfort layers to create an affordable all-foam bed that is decently comfortable, supportive, quiet, and cool.

The most basic of GhostBed’s options, the GhostBed Original combines latex and memory foam inside a viscose and polyester blend cover to provide sleepers with a medium-firm bed that’s suitable for almost any sleeping position if you’re lightweight or average weight.

The GhostBed Original is more than the basic memory foam mattress consisting of polyfoam and memory foam. The Original has a few specialty features, like aerated latex in the top layer for enhanced cooling. In our opinion, this is the best choice for individuals and couples who want a GhostBed that’s going to be affordable and comfortable and who don’t sleep noticeably hot.

GhostBed Luxe

  • Best For: People who sleep hot but want an all foam bed, shoppers with a larger budget, and couples who prioritize responsiveness and edge support.
  • Price Range: $1,425 to $2,085
  • Standout Feature: Phase change materials and gel memory foam provide a cooler sleeping experience for hot sleepers, and enhanced edge support that is still responsive for couples.

Like the Original GhostBed, the Luxe is an all-foam mattress but incorporates more cooling features and additional bounce. The top layers of the bed include phase-change material and gel memory foam to enhance both airflow and the bed’s ability to draw heat away from the sleeper’s body.

It’s also closer to a medium on the firmness scale, making it a nice choice for sleepers who enjoy a plush feel to their mattress or who are strict side sleepers. This bed will definitely sleep cooler than the Original, and it’s also a better choice for couples who want a little more responsiveness and edge support than the Original can offer. That being said, it’s the most expensive of GhostBed’s all-foam options, so it’s best for shoppers with a larger budget.

GhostBed Flex

  • Best For: Combination sleepers, people who like responsive sleeping surfaces and all body types.
  • Price Range: $1,145 to $1,985
  • Standout Feature: The Flex stands out for its additional support for heavyweight sleepers and its combination of cooling and pressure relief.

The GhostBed Flex is a memory foam hybrid mattress that features a fiber padded top, several memory foam layers, a polyfoam transitional layer and a pocketed coil support core. Like the Original, it’s medium-firm, providing a comfortable setting for most sleeping positions.

This bed could work for almost any sleeper, but it’s best suited for heavyweight sleepers who need extra support from the coil core and for combination sleepers who need the responsiveness of springs to make changing positions easier. The Flex is more expensive than the Original but not as expensive as the Luxe.

GhostBed 3D Matrix

  • Best For: Shoppers with a very large budget who are combination sleepers, sleep hot or sleep with a partner.
  • Price Range: $1,750 to $3,500
  • Standout Feature: This luxury mattress combines plush foam, bouncy coils and advanced cooling technology to create a comfortable yet responsive mattress that’s excellent for combination sleepers yet surprisingly motion isolating for couples.

Like the Flex, the 3D Matrix combines foam top layers with bouncy coils, but the Matrix has a slightly firmer and more responsive feel than the Flex. It’s also the most expensive of GhostBed’s mattresses.

Not only is the cover cooling, but the top foams incorporate gel to dissipate heat. These are followed by soft yet responsive layers of polyfoam and a breathable layer of pocketed coils. The standout feature in this bed is the layer of gel polymer, which sits just beneath the cover. This polymer layer is a thermal conductive gel that absorbs excess body heat and is designed to help sleepers sleep “on” the mattress, not “in” it.

As a result, the 3D Matrix works exceptionally well for people who don’t want to sink too deeply into their mattresses (namely, combination sleepers). Pure back sleepers will find it comfortable, strict side sleepers may find it too firm and strict stomach sleepers may find it too soft.

Helps With Back Pain

In general, the GhostBed Luxe is the most accommodating, with a firmness setting that’s suitable for all sleeper types as well as couples, people who sleep hot, and those who experience back pain. This is because of the bed’s cooling features and balanced feel, allowing for easy movement on the bed while also minimizing motion transfer for couples.

While we did not consider the GhostBed Original a good choice for very hot sleepers when compared to the other three models, the GhostBed Original will sleep cool relative to other foam mattresses. All four beds help with back pain and can be appropriate for couples, but the best option for you will depend on your area of pain, primary sleeping position, and the preferences of your partner. We recommend reading our descriptions of each mattress and who they’re best for if you’re torn between two models based on the chart above.

How Construction Impacts The Feel of the Mattress

The simple construction of the GhostBed Original isn’t as fancy as the other options, but it gives the bed an accommodating, solid foam feel. The aerated latex foam and gel memory foam aid in cooling and provide the contouring for this balanced, medium-firm bed.

If you’re looking for an even more cooling memory foam mattress, the GhostBed Luxe is considered the premium all-foam option. The phase-change cover increases the bed’s ability to actively cool hot sleepers, and the lower density of its comfort layers make it a little more plush for side and lightweight sleepers.

The Flex is the first mattress in the lineup that swaps a polyfoam core for pocketed coils, essentially a coil version of the Luxe. The coils provide even more bounce, responsiveness  and cooling, making it an excellent option for couples who sleep hot and combination sleepers who don’t want to sink into the mattress while changing positions.

Finally, the 3D Matrix is a bit of a standalone with regard to construction. It’s designed to compete with the popular Purple mattress, as evidenced by the polymer grid underneath the cover. It has the most unique feel of the four options, and the top layer of foam features an egg crate construction over which the polymer material is spread. Think of it as an upgraded version of the Flex that feels like a soft, neutral foam bed rather than a pure memory foam bed.

GhostBed Mattress Warranty, Shipping & Sleep Trial

All GhostBed mattresses come with free shipping to the contiguous U.S. Beds typically ship within 1 to 2 business days after they’ve been purchased. GhostBed has distribution centers all across the U.S., so many customers receive their mattress within just 2 to 5 days of placing their order.

White Glove delivery, which includes old mattress removal, in-home setup, and packaging removal, is available for an added fee of $199. White Glove delivery is only available to customers in the contiguous USA.

Every GhostBed comes with a 101-night sleep trial, which gives customers more than three months to test out the bed and determine if it’s right for them. If you don’t like the GhostBed you chose, you can return it for a full refund within the trial period. You’ll need to sleep on the bed for at least 30 nights (GhostBed’s break-in period), prior to initiating a return.

GhostBed mattresses also come with a warranty, which varies in length depending on the mattress you buy. The GhostBed Original comes with a 20-year warranty and the Luxe, Flex and 3D Matrix each come with a 25-year warranty, all of which are a huge upgrade when compared with the industry standard of 10 years of coverage. The details of GhostBed’s warranty coverage are similar for all three beds, and returns and replacements are prorated after year 10.

GhostBed Mattress FAQs

How long does a GhostBed mattress last?

Because GhostBed has only been around since 2015, it’s hard to say exactly how long its mattresses last. Based on customer reviews and similar all-foam and hybrid models, we expect them to last between 7 and 10 years on average.

Can you flip a GhostBed mattress?

No, but GhostBed recommends rotating its mattresses every three to six months to prevent indentations and sagging.

Who makes GhostBed?

GhostBed is made by Nature’s Sleep, a well-respected bedding company that’s been around for a few decades.

How do GhostBeds ship?

All four GhostBeds ship as a bed-in-a-box, which means they’re compressed and rolled for shipping. Once your bed arrives, you’ll need to unbox it and remove the plastic cover. The mattress will need up to 72 hours to expand to its original shape and firmness setting. If you notice a slight smell when unboxing, that’s called off gassing and should go away within a few hours.
