WinkBed vs. Nectar Mattress Comparison

Debating whether you want the bouncy support of a hybrid mattress or the hug-like contouring of memory foam? We’re here to make your decision easier with our WinkBed vs. Nectar mattress comparison.

WinkBeds and Nectar are both bed-in-a-box mattress brands, but their namesake mattresses couldn’t be more different. The WinkBed is an innerspring mattress with a bouncy personality that’s a good fit for combination sleepers. It has a hybrid construction that keeps it relatively cool, which is ideal for hot sleepers. The Nectar is a memory foam mattress with excellent motion isolation and better pressure relief. It’s also the more affordable option between the two.

Comparing WinkBeds Mattress & Nectar Mattress

  • The WinkBed mattress has a springy feel that’s typical of traditional innerspring mattresses, whereas the Nectar has the slow sinking feeling associated with contouring memory foam. As a result, you’ll sleep more “on” the WinkBed and more “in” the Nectar. Check out the best innerspring mattresses for similar options.
  • The WinkBed has a more breathable construction, which enables it to filter body heat out of the mattress more quickly than the Nectar.
  • All-foam mattresses like the Nectar tend to have much better motion isolation than hybrid or innerspring mattresses like the WinkBed. Foam simply does a better job of neutralizing movement, whereas coils absorb motion and then release it.
  • You can shop three different firmness options from WinkBeds, including the Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer versions (in this comparison we’re referencing the Luxury Firm model). The Nectar mattress is only available in a medium-firm firmness level.

  • The Nectar and WinkBeds mattresses both have a medium-firm feel that balances comfort and support.
  • Both mattresses feature gel-infused comfort foams that work to neutralize the temperature of the sleeping surface.

Who the WinkBeds Mattress is Best For

Best For…

  • Combination sleepers should achieve enough kick-back from the spring coils to move around easily on the mattress surface.
  • Back sleepers will experience plenty of support without compromising on cushioning comfort.
  • Hot sleepers will benefit from an innerspring base layer that enables plenty of airflow.

May Not be Best For…

  • Side sleepers who need a mattress that’s more pressure-relieving around the shoulders and hips; the WinkBeds is just a bit too firm for this sleeping position
  • Value shoppers should peruse our list of best affordable mattresses.

Who the Nectar Mattress is Best For

Best For…

  • Side sleepers under 230 lbs. get enough sinkage for true pressure point relief around the hips and shoulders.
  • Lightweight and average-weight back sleepers will experience lots of pressure relief for their hips and enough support to prevent their spines from arching out of alignment.
  • Budget sleepers will appreciate how Nectar keeps their pricing accessible to the average consumer; you won’t pay a fortune for a Queen size.

May Not be Best For…

  • Those with heavyweight body types need more support than the all-foam construction of the Nectar can provide.
  • Stomach sleepers need a mattress that can keep their hips lifted in line with their shoulders. Firm mattresses do this the best.
  • Hot sleepers will probably want a mattress with more breathability.

Deciding Between WinkBeds & Nectar

Firmness / Feel

Mattress firmness is rated on a firmness scale that ranges from one to 10. The firmer the mattress, the higher the number, and vice versa. With that said, the way a mattress feels is subjective to each person. For example, heavyweight individuals tend to sink deeper into mattresses, and so they often experience mattresses as softer than advertised. The opposite is true for lightweight sleepers. Check out the best soft mattresses for mattresses that cradle lightweight sleepers.

Still, it’s nice to have a reference point. We think the WinkBeds lands at 6.5/10 on the firmness scale, while the Nectar is closer to 6/10. Both mattresses have a medium-firm firmness level, but the Nectar feels softer, probably due to the softness of the top two layers.

WinkBeds Performance By Sleeping Position:
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  4 4 3
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): 5 4 4
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  4 4 3
Nectar Performance By Sleeping Position:
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  4 3 3
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): 4 2 4
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  2 2 3

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Motion Isolation

If you share your bed and are sensitive to motion, pay close attention to this category. A mattress’s motion isolation performance indicates how likely you are to feel movement from across the mattress surface. Foam absorbs motion a lot better than coils, so predictably, the Nectar reduces motion transfer a lot better than the WinkBeds. See the best mattresses for couples for mattresses that isolate motion well.

Edge Support

Edge support is an important consideration if you want to maximize your usable sleeping surface. It’s also a nice feature if you sit on the edge of the bed to get ready in the morning. Mattress companies improve edge stability by adding features like sturdy coils or firm foam. The reinforced coil perimeter around the WinkBeds provides the best edge support of the two, but we were also impressed with how supported we felt along the sides of the Nectar.

Pressure Relief

Pressure relief is crucial for side sleepers and a nice comfort feature for back sleepers. Stomach sleepers are the only ones who tend to need more support than cushion.

Considering that both of these mattresses are medium-firm, you might assume that they share the same amount of pressure relief. We didn’t find that to be the case. The top layers of foam on the Nectar allow you to sink down into the mattress without feeling push-back from coils, like those in the WinkBed. Accordingly, we recommend the Nectar as the better mattresses for side sleepers.

Spine Alignment

Spinal alignment is the phrase sleep experts use to describe the equivalent of good sleeping posture. While on your side, your spine should form a straight line from the base of your neck to your tailbone. On your stomach and back, your spine should stay in a neutral “S” curve. This is vital to avoiding back pain. We generally noticed better spinal alignment on the WinkBed, though the Nectar did a fair job. For our recommendations on mattresses that protect the spine, see the best mattresses for back sleepers.

Innerspring mattresses typically wear out faster than memory foam mattresses, so we think the Nectar is the more durable mattress of these two. Most hybrid or innerspring beds last you at least five years and maybe up to seven. On the other hand, memory foam doesn’t tend to wear out for seven to 10 years. Fortunately, both the WinkBed and the Nectar offer Lifetime warranties for the original owners of their mattresses.

Cooling / Temperature

Mattress temperature boils down to materials and construction. Memory foam is notorious for retaining body heat and making hot sleepers feel stifled, but Nectar works against that tendency by adding cooling gel to their two top layers. Still, our team thinks the WinkBed mattress sleeps much cooler. The breathable innerspring layer allows for hot air to cycle out of the mattress, rather than pooling beneath the sleeper. See the best cooling mattresses for hot sleepers for our top picks.

WinkBeds Mattress Construction

Cover TENCEL fabric
Comfort Layer  Euro pillow top
Support Layer Pocketed coils and Extra-Edge support system
Mattress Thickness  13.5”

The WinkBed mattress uses a TENCEL mattress cover that’s soft, breathable, and moisture-wicking. TENCEL fabric is derived from wood pulp, and WinkBeds uses sustainable eucalyptus for the bed’s mattress cover. The euro pillow top features a high-performance polyfoam blend called SupportCell that’s soft and responsive. For reference, the old WinkBed mattress model included microcoils instead of foam.

An extra layer of polyfoam under the center third of the mattress adds additional lumbar support. The base of the mattress is a tall innerspring layer made up of individually wrapped pocketed coils. This layer is divided into strategic ergonomic zones that provide more support under your lower back and the edges of the bed. The coils rest on a layer of high-density support foam that keeps the mattress stable.

Nectar Mattress Construction

Cover Quilted TENCEL fabric
Comfort Layer  Gel memory foam
Transitional Layer Adaptive response foam
Support Layer Support foam
Mattress Thickness  11”

The Nectar mattress is also wrapped in a cooling polyethylene cover that absorbs moisture and allows warm air to escape from the foam layers. On top is soft, conforming gel memory foam. This layer has the slow response and close, contouring feel typically associated with memory foam. The transition layer is equally soft, but much more responsive. It eases your body weight down so you don’t bump into the high-density base layer of support foam.

Our Final Take

Overall, we feel confident recommending both mattresses to back sleepers, but the three firmness options available for the WinkBed suit a wide range of sleeping positions. Stomach sleepers should choose the “Firmer” version and side sleepers should opt for the “Softer” version. We also favor the WinkBed for combination sleepers and those who run hot at night.

The Nectar is a better choice for side sleepers who want the conforming feel of memory foam and a more balanced medium-firm feel. It’s also our choice for couples who want strong motion isolation. If pricing is a consideration for you, you’ll save with the Nectar. Remember, both mattress companies offer Lifetime warranties, free shipping, and free returns.
