DreamCloud vs. WinkBed Mattress Comparison

Prepare for a battle between two luxury bed-in-a-box mattresses! In this mattress comparison, we’re taking a closer look at the original DreamCloud and original WinkBed mattress.

Comparing WinkBeds & DreamCloud Mattresses

The WinkBed and DreamCloud are luxury hybrid mattresses with innerspring base layers and foam comfort layers. Both are designed to provide an optimal balance of support and comfort. They’re also both great choices for back sleepers and hot sleepers. With that said, the WinkBed is better for those who like the more traditional feel of an innerspring mattress, while the DreamCloud has a bit more cushioning comfort, which is typical of hybrid mattresses.

Differences

  • The WinkBed mattress is topped with a 2” foam pillow top, while the DreamCloud features 5” of combined foam layers. This enables you to sink a little deeper into the DreamCloud than the WinkBed.
  • Only the DreamCloud mattress has a memory foam layer. This layer gives it more of the contouring and slow sink typically associated with memory foam mattresses.
  • The reinforced support coils around the perimeter of the WinkBed mattress give it noticeably more edge support than the DreamCloud.
  • The DreamCloud is only available in a medium-firm feel, while the WinkBed is available in three firmness options: Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer. For this comparison, we’re focusing on the WinkBed Luxury Firm model.

Similarities

  • Both of these mattresses stay pretty darn cool thanks to gel-infused foam layers and the breathability of the mattress covers and coil base layers.
  • The DreamCloud and WinkBed are both excellent choices for combination sleepers who need a bouncy mattress to keep them from feeling stuck in the bed.
  • Neither mattress isolates motion particularly well, which is especially relevant if you’re a light sleeper who shares the bed with a restless partner. Check out the best mattresses for couples if you sleep with partner.

Deciding Between WinkBeds & DreamCloud

Firmness / Feel

Mattress firmness can tell you a lot about how a mattress feels without ever actually having slept on it. Most mattress companies offer a numerical firmness level that falls somewhere between one to 10, with one being extra soft and 10 being extra firm. We rate both the DreamCloud and WinkBed mattresses as 6.5/10 on the firmness scale, or medium-firm. Even so, we think the DreamCloud is a fraction softer than the WinkBed.

Also, remember that everyone experiences mattress firmness differently. Those with lightweight body types tend to rest on top of most mattresses, and thus gauge mattresses as firmer, while heavyweight sleepers experience more sinkage and rate mattresses as softer than advertised. See the best mattresses for heavy people for the most supportive mattresses.

WinkBeds Performance By Sleeping Position:
Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  5 5 4
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): 5 5 4
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  4 4 3
DreamCloud Performance By Sleeping Position:
Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  5 5 4
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): 5 4 4
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  4 3 3

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Motion Isolation

As part of our review process, we test how well each mattress isolates motion at its source. Motion isolation is really only important if you’re planning to share your bed. Typically, innerspring and hybrid mattresses don’t do a great job of isolating motion, and that’s true for both the WinkBed and DreamCloud. They’re each quite bouncy, but the 5” tall foam layer on top of the DreamCloud dampens motion a little better than the WinkBed’s pillow top. If you are looking for an additional plush layer, see the best pillow top mattresses.

Edge Support

Edge support is important if you regularly sit or sleep near the edges of the bed. Both of these mattresses reinforce the coils around their perimeters, but we felt more supported on the sides of the WinkBed. That means you can plan to stretch out across the whole mattress surface without worrying about rolling off the edge of the bed. That’s not to say that the DreamCloud has poor edge support; only that the WinkBed does a bit better in this category.

Pressure Relief

The amount of pressure relief you need depends on your sleeping position. Side sleepers need the most, stomach sleepers need the least, and back sleepers are right in the middle. Both of these mattresses are on the firmer side, so they provide enough pressure relief for back sleepers and for lightweight stomach sleepers. If you’re looking for a softer mattress, remember that the WinkBed is offered in three different firmness options with varying levels of pressure relief. For the most pressure relief, see the best mattresses for side sleepers.

Spine Alignment

Spinal alignment is just a fancy way of saying “good sleeping posture.” The best mattresses keep your spine in a neutral position while you lie on your back or stomach. They will also help you ensure a straight spine while lying on your side. This reduces back pain and muscle soreness, especially around your shoulders and lower back. Check out the best mattresses for back pain.

The DreamCloud and WinkBed mattresses are both supportive enough to keep your spine aligned, though they are a little too soft to keep average-weight or heavyweight stomach sleepers’ hips elevated. This could lead to spinal misalignment and, ultimately, pain.

Durability

Hybrid mattresses with high quality materials last between five to eight years, depending on the frequency of use. We estimate that the DreamCloud and WinkBed will both last about this long, and both come with Lifetime warranties that protect against defects for as long as the original owner retains ownership of the bed.

Temperature

As far as temperature goes, hybrid and innerspring mattresses generally stay the coolest compared to other mattress designs. Why? There’s lots of room for warm air to escape through the coil layers and out of the mattress. The DreamCloud and WinkBed both have breathable coil layers and stay nice and cool. If you are a hot sleeper, see the best cooling mattresses.

WinkBeds Mattress Construction

Cover TENCEL fabric
Comfort Layer  Euro pillow top
Support Layer Pocketed coils and Extra-Edge Support System
Mattress Thickness  13.5”

The WinkBed mattress features a TENCEL cover that’s made from eucalyptus pulp. TENCEL fabric is known for its softness, breathability, and absorbing power. In other words, it keeps you cool and dry.

The Luxury Firm euro pillow top is quilted with 2” of Hypersoft foam (3” in the Softer version). It’s infused with gel, which absorbs excess body heat. Sandwiched between the pillow top and base layer is a piece of polyfoam in the center third of the mattress. This layer provides extra lumbar support and responsiveness. Finally, the coil system is divided into seven firmness zones that provide more cushioning near your pressure points and extra support around the edges.

The DreamCloud mattress is wrapped in a soft, breathable cashmere cover that’s quilted with 1.5” of soft foam on top. This gives the mattress a plush, luxurious feel right when you lie down. Next up is a 1” thick layer of contouring memory foam infused with cooling gel. Beneath that is a firmer 2.5” layer of transition foam that eases you into the base layer of individually wrapped coils. The coils drastically improve the airflow and support of the bed.

Our Final Take

The WinkBed and DreamCloud mattress have similar constructions, but you’ll like the WinkBed if you want the firmness, buoyancy, and breathability of a traditional innerspring mattress. The DreamCloud is a better bet if you’re looking for the stability and support of an innerspring system, but with a little extra cushion up top.

They’re both great options for back sleepers and hot sleepers. If you’re a stomach sleeper, go with the Firmer version of the WinkBed. If you’re a side sleeper, the Softer WinkBed is a good bet.
