The Mattress Nerd’s Take: The Haven Premier is an all-foam mattress with a medium-firm feel that best suits back and side sleepers. It’s made with a quilted cotton cover, gel-infused comfort foam, firmer transition foam, and high-density support foam. The budget pricing is a bargain for such a high quality mattress.

How Does the Haven Premier Mattress Feel?

Firmness

Most mattresses are rated on a firmness scale from 1–10, and the same is true for our team here at Mattress Nerd. The softer the mattress, the lower the number, so an extremely plush bed is around 2/10, while a very firm bed is more like 8/10.

The Haven Premier mattress has a medium-firm feel that falls between 5.5–7/10. We think it’s right around 6/10, but other reviewers have placed it at 6.5/10 or 7/10. What we all agree on is that this is a true medium-firm mattress. This is also known as the universal firmness level, since it offers a good balance of support and cushioning.

Temperature

All-foam beds typically run warmer than innerspring or hybrid mattresses because dense foams don’t have the best airflow. With that said, we think the average sleeper will stay cool, or at least temperature neutral, on the Haven Premier

Why? Let’s start with the top layer. It may be foam, but it’s not memory foam, and it lacks the chemicals that are notorious for causing heat retention. The top layer is also infused with cooling gel that absorbs excess body heat. Additionally, the transition layer is perforated for better airflow, which is a fancy way of saying it’s hole-punched all over. If you are a hot sleeper, check out the best cooling mattresses

Support

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers are—in our opinion—the best fit for the Haven Premier mattress. The medium-firm feel balances cushioning and support, which is just what back sleepers need. While heavyweight sleepers may prefer even more support, lightweight and average-weight sleepers should feel supported, cushioned, and nicely elevated. For similar options, check out the best mattresses for back sleepers.

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers are also an ideal candidate for the Haven Premier, thanks to a softer comfort layer that cushions pressure points. Average-weight and heavyweight sleepers will get the best pressure relief on the Haven Premier, but lightweight sleepers may want to opt for an even softer bed. For pressure relieving mattresses, see the best mattresses for side sleepers.

Stomach Sleepers

All mattresses should keep the sleeper’s spine in a neutral “S”-curve, regardless of sleeping position, otherwise prolonged misalignment could cause pain and stiffness. This is especially true for stomach sleepers, whose hips should be aligned with their shoulders. In order for front-facing sleepers to get that level of support, they need a firmer mattress, which are usually the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.

The Haven Premier is a medium-firm mattress, so it’s probably not going to provide enough support to keep the hips of average-weight and heavyweight sleepers elevated. It may work for lightweight stomach sleepers, though, since they won’t sink as deeply into the mattress surface.

Combination Sleepers

Combination sleepers, or those who move around often at night, need a mattress with lots of responsiveness. We think the Haven Premier does a decent job in this area. Lightweight or average-weight combination sleepers who favor their backs and sides will feel the most comfortable on this bed. Heavyweight combination sleepers will probably want a bed with a bit more bounce. For more responsive mattresses, see the best mattresses for combination sleepers.

Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  5 3 4
Average-weight (130–230 lbs): 5 2 5
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  4 2 4

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Does It Fit Your Lifestyle?

Preventing Back Pain

To prevent back pain from developing or getting worse, you need a mattress that keeps your spine aligned. Good sleeping posture depends on your sleeping position and mattress firmness. As a medium-firm mattress, the Haven Premier supports back and side sleepers the best, but stomach sleepers may develop lower back pain, as their hips could sink too far into the soft comfort layer. If you lie on your stomach and feel your hips sinking down into the Haven Premier, it might not be the best mattress for back pain

Budget Shoppers

We’ve reviewed mattresses that cost as much as $10,000, but that’s definitely not the case for the Haven Premier. This mid-range mattress won’t set you back more than $1,099 for a Queen size. Plus, Haven offers free shipping and runs seasonal discounts that cut hundreds of dollars off the total cost of the mattress. It’s not the absolute cheapest mattress we’ve ever seen, but the Haven Premier certainly seems like a great pick for shoppers keeping an eye on their wallets. Construction: What’s Under the Surface?

All-foam mattresses like the Haven Premier blend cushion and conforming support, making them a good match for many body types. Back and side sleeping are the best fits for the medium-firm foam, and we think hot sleepers will stay cooler on the Haven than on traditional memory foam mattresses.

Layer #1—Cotton Quilted Cover: The cotton cover is designed to regulate your body temperature, and is made with 450 GSM fabric. GSM is a measurement of softness and comfort. For reference, the average fabric GSM is around 300 or 400. Bonus: The cover is removable and machine washable!

Layer #2—Fireproof Cloth: Haven uses natural organic cotton as a fire barrier within the Haven Premier mattress, instead of using chemicals.

Layer #3—Cooling Buoyancy Foam: The 3” foam layer is custom-blended for Haven and swirled with a cooling gel infusion. It provides lots of pressure relief and contouring support, and also reduces motion transfer.

Layer #4—Transition Foam: The 2” transition layer is slightly firmer than the comfort layer, which eases your body into the dense base layer below. It’s also perforated from extra breathability.

Layer #5—High-Density Foam Base Layer: A 7” block of high-density foam supports your weight, plus the weight of the top foam layers. It keeps the mattress supportive and durable.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

Haven mattresses are shipped for free via UPS Ground. Depending on where you live, you can expect your delivery to arrive within six to 10 business days. Look for your tracking number in your email after you place your order. Currently, Haven only ships to the contiguous U.S. White glove delivery costs $300, and you can add old mattress removal for $125.

Like most online mattress brands, Haven ships their mattresses compressed and rolled in a box (in the industry, that’s called “bed-in-a-box” delivery). All you need to do is unroll the mattress on your bed frame or box spring, cut off the plastic packaging, and let it rise. Any off-gassing scents should be gone in a few hours. These “new mattress” odors are temporary, especially in a well-ventilated room.

Warranty

Haven, and the brand’s sister company Idle Sleep, protect their mattresses with an Everlasting Warranty. In other words, your mattress is eligible for repairs or replacement as long as you are the original owner. Haven says they cover damage from everyday wear and tear, but that doesn’t include damage caused by misuse or abuse.

Trial Period & Returns

Haven’s mattress trial is 18 months (or 540 nights), which is way longer than most trial periods on the market. For reference, the typical sleep trial lasts for 100 nights. Sleep trials start when you receive your mattress.

If the Haven Premier isn’t a great fit, you can return it for free after a 30-day break-in period. You’ll get a full refund, plus Haven will pick up the mattress for donation or disposal. Email returns@thehavenbed.com to start the return process.

Note: The return process may be different for purchases made from Amazon.

Haven Mattress FAQs

Should I flip my Haven Premier mattress?

Nope. The Haven Premier is a one-sided mattress that doesn''''t need to be flipped. If you''''re concerned about even wear of the top layers, rotate the mattress head to foot once a month for the first few months and then once a quarter (about every four months).u00a0

How long is my Haven Premier mattress expected to last?

Foam beds usually last between seven to 10 years, depending on the quality of the materials and the frequency of use. If two average-weight adults use the Haven Premier every night, we estimate that it will last for seven years. In a guest bedroom, it could last up to a decade.

Is the Haven Premier a good mattress?

We think so, especially for back and side sleepers. The softness of the top foam layer provides plenty of pressure relief for pressure points, while the dense base layers keep you well-supported. Plus, the gel infusion and aerated transition layer work to keep you cool.

Comparing the Haven Mattress

Haven Premier Mattress vs. Haven Boutique Mattress

The Haven Premier and Haven Boutique are both all-foam beds, but the Boutique is a smidge softer than the Premier. It’s also 2” taller and costs a few hundred dollars more. The biggest difference in construction is the addition of a 3” memory foam layer beneath 3” of gel-infused foam. The Boutique is also a good choice for back and side sleepers, though heavyweight back sleepers may want a bit more support.

Haven Premier Mattress vs. Tuft & Needle Original Mattress

The Haven Premier and Tuft & Needle Original are both all-foam mattresses with excellent motion isolation and spine alignment. The Tuft & Needle is made with a proprietary Adaptive Foam and is only three layers compared with the Haven Premier’s five layers. Overall, the Haven provides better pressure relief and cooling, but the Tuft & Needle has better edge support and responsiveness.

Haven Premier Mattress vs. Casper Original Mattress

The Casper and Haven Premier are both made with foam layers that evenly distribute body weight and provide pressure relief. They’re also both medium-firm, though the Casper is just a bit softer than the Haven PremierThe Casper is made with three foam layers and open cell foam, so we think it stays about the same temperature as the Premier. Price-wise, the two are very similar, though you’ll get a Lifetime warranty with Haven, versus a 10-year warranty with Casper.

Haven Premier Mattress vs. Nectar Original Mattress

Nectar matches Haven’s Lifetime warranty and also provides customers with a remarkably long sleep trial (365 nights). Rather than five layers, the Nectar is made with four, including gel-infused foam up top and two firmer foam layers below. Performance-wise, these beds are similar, though the Nectar runs a little warmer than the Haven Premier. The Nectar is also a more budget-friendly mattress—the queen size is only $799, compared with $1,099 for the Haven.

Pros/Cons

Pros

  • Excellent support that keeps back sleepers lifted on top of the mattress
  • Enough pressure relief for side sleepers to rest pain-free
  • Cooling features that work to keep the mattress temperature-neutral
  • A Lifetime warranty and 18-month trial period that are tough to beat

Cons

  • A little too much sinkage near the hips for most stomach sleepers
  • Subpar edge support
  • Not as durable as other foam beds

What’s the Bottom Line?

Haven says this mattress offers a “5-star hotel sleep experience,” and for the most part, we agree! If you’re a back or side sleeper who’s not too concerned about overheating, the Haven Premier is ideal. The affordable prices, extensive trial period, and free shipping make this mattress worth your attention. But if you’re a stomach sleeper or someone who sits for long periods of time on the edge of your bed, you might not find enough support on the Haven Premier.
