Nerd’s Take on Bear Elite Hybrid
The Bear Elite Hybrid is a high-end hybrid mattress with a balanced, luxurious feel that’s best for folks who want plenty of cushioning. It scored well across the board in our tests, a sign of a well-rounded mattress. It’s available in multiple firmness options, though it skews slightly soft. Back sleepers, couples, and those with joint pain should love this mattress. It did lag behind in our cooling test, but you can always upgrade to the even cooler Celliant-infused pillow top if you’re a hot sleeper.

How The Bear Elite Hybrid Scored in Our Testing
Our testing methodology encompasses a range of performance categories from how cool a bed feels to how well it relieves pain. All of these are rated out of 5, then tallied up into our final overall score. Any mattress that scores above 3.7 out of 5 is considered a strong performer.
The Bear Elite Hybrid earned an impressive rating score of 4.3 out of 5. It’s an exceptionally well-rounded mattress, with multiple ratings above 4 out of 5, including a perfect one for its lack of noise. It earned its lowest mark for cooling, but even that was only about average: 3.8 out of 5.
Mattress Nerd Scores: Bear Elite Hybrid
What Sleeping Position Is the Bear Elite Hybrid Best For?
| Body Type | BACK SLEEPERS | STOMACH SLEEPERS | SIDE SLEEPERS |
| Lightweight (< 130 lbs): | 4 | 5 | 4 |
| Average-weight (130–230 lbs): | 5 | 4 | 4 |
| Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): | 5 | 2 | 3 |
Back Sleepers

Back sleepers often do well on hybrid beds like the Bear Elite, since they offer a blend of plushness and support. It was unsurprising, then, that all of our testers enjoyed the mattress in this position.
Our lightweight tester felt the most lift on the surface, while our heavyweight tester sank in the furthest. Both were still able to maintain comfortable spinal alignment. Our average-weight tester specifically loved how the softer pillow top contoured to her lower back, filling in the gap there.
Side Sleepers

Side sleeping puts a lot of strain on the hips and shoulders, so these sleepers will need plenty of pressure relief. The Bear Elite Hybrid’s pillow top provides just that. We did find that its medium feel is better suited to lightweight and average-weight side sleepers. These folks should be able to sink without falling too far into the mattress.
Our heavyweight tester complained of uneven sinkage, which compromised his overall alignment. He felt his upper half dig further into the mattress, creating pressure on his shoulder. Most sleepers over 230 pounds should opt for a firmer option or try the firmest model of the Elite Hybrid.
Stomach Sleepers

Firm mattresses are preferred for stomach sleepers to keep them comfortably aloft on the mattress surface. Softer beds can cause your hips to dip too far and possibly cause lower back pain.
The medium or firm Bear Elite Hybrid will likely be too soft for heavyweight stomach sleepers, who will likely sink right through the pillow top. Our lightweight tester thought the medium model was perfect for stomach-sleeping, while average-weight stomach sleepers should opt for the firmest version.
Combination Sleepers
If you switch between multiple sleeping positions, you’re what’s known as a combination sleeper. Since the Bear Elite mattress has a versatile profile that can accommodate different sleeper types, it’s a good option for these folks.
The Bear Elite also has some bounce to it, which makes moving around on its surface easy. This can be an attractive quality for combination sleepers who want seamless transitions between positions.
Bear Elite Hybrid Performance Breakdown
Firmness and Feel
The Bear Elite Hybrid mattress is available in three firmness options: soft, medium, and firm. We tested out the mid-range model and found it came in at a 6/10 on our firmness scale, slightly softer than true medium-firm.
The pillow top also adds extra plushness, letting you sink gently into the bed’s surface. It’s not as slow-moving as traditional memory foam, though you’ll get plenty of contouring as the top layers conform to your body. Meanwhile, the coil unit underneath provides lift to secure that balance of support and pressure relief.
Cooling

We noticed a cool-to-the-touch feel at the Bear Elite’s surface when we initially lay down on it. However, the longer our testers rested on the surface, the more the bed heated up. This led us to rate its temperature regulation at 3.5 out of 5. While we wouldn’t call it a particularly cooling mattress, it shouldn’t overheat for the average sleeper.
Some hot sleepers might want to consider upgrading to the Celliant cover. Celliant is a material that converts excess heat into infrared energy. This purportedly helps with circulation to rejuvenate tired muscles as you sleep.
Edge Support

Edge support refers to how well a mattress’s perimeter holds up under weight. To test it, we sit and lie down on the edge of the mattress, judging how secure we feel in each position. The only sinkage we noticed came from the Bear Elite Hybrid’s pillow top, and mostly when seated. Lying at the edges felt no different than the center of the mattress. This resulted in a 4.5-out-of-5 edge support score.
Ease of Movement

Some folks like a super-cushy, slow-moving feel to their mattress, while others like a bed that’s easier to move around on. The Bear Elite Hybrid falls into the latter category. Though it has a plusher pillow top, you can still feel the bounce of the coils underneath. Our testers found it relatively simple to roll around on the surface and switch between each sleeping position. With an ease of movement rating of 4.5 out of 5, the Bear Elite Hybrid should be a great choice for combination sleepers.
Motion Isolation

Have you ever felt your partner tossing and turning from your side of the bed, enough that it startled you awake? In that case, you need a mattress with good motion isolation. This means that movement is absorbed before it can travel across the mattress.
When two testers tried out the Bear Elite Hybrid, they only experienced some motion transfer when someone got in and out of the bed. Nothing was significant enough to disturb someone’s sleep, so we rated the bed’s motion isolation at 4.3 out of 5.
Noise
The Bear Elite Hybrid has coils, so there is some potential for creaking and squeaking. However, throughout our testing, the mattress didn’t make a sound. We rated the bed’s noise level at a perfect 5 out of 5. Note that this could change over time as the mattress ages, but we don’t expect it to be disruptive.
Pain Relief

Regardless of which firmness model you choose, the Bear Elite Hybrid should provide excellent pressure relief, thanks to its cushy pillow top. It will allow sleepers to sink into the mattress and achieve gentle contouring along the body. This makes it a good choice for sleepers with pain concerns around sensitive joints. Side sleepers with hip pain and shoulder pain should especially appreciate this added softness.
Some sleepers with back pain, especially if they weigh over 230 pounds, may find the bed too soft to properly support them. But others may benefit from the pillow top’s ability to conform to their lower back, helping coax the spine into comfortable alignment.
With these factors in mind, the Bear Elite Hybrid earns an admirable pain relief score of 4.1 out of 5.
Sex
The best beds for sex will be bouncy with a strong perimeter and make little to no noise. This ensures that you can move around without incident and make use of the bed’s full surface area, all without any distracting sound. The Bear Elite Hybrid performed excellently in all of these areas, earning a 4.5 for ease of movement, the same for edge support, and a perfect noise score. On top of this, its motion isolation is a plus for sexually active couples who share the bed.
Durability
Most mattresses last about 7 to 10 years, and the Bear Elite Hybrid should long outlast them. As a high-quality hybrid, it contains multiple layers of foam and hundreds of steel coils, both of which should increase its longevity. Since the mattress performed exceptionally well in our edge support tests, barely buckling under our weight, we also expect the bed to hold its shape with repeated use. Finally, the brand’s limited lifetime warranty speaks to a high confidence in the durability of its product.
Bear Elite Hybrid Construction Layers
The Bear Elite Hybrid contains a mixture of foam and coils, each layered to create a balance of cushioning and support. The specific firmness and construction of these layers may slightly differ based on which model you choose, plus whether you add any upgrades.

Cover
The Bear Elite’s top layer is its hand-quilted cover, made with HydroCool® technology for a soft-but-airy feel at the surface. You can also pay to upgrade to Bear’s extra-cooling cover, which contains Celliant fibers to help with muscle recovery and rejuvenation.
Comfort Layer
Below the cover is a layer of copper-infused memory foam that reduces pressure and contours to your body. The copper in this layer is also meant to wick away moisture and release it later for continual cooling.
Transition Layer
The Bear Elite’s dynamic transition foam layer is dense to bolster support. It helps ease you into the supportive coil layer below.
Support Later
This layer of coils helps your bed stay bouncy and durable for longer. They are divided into five zones to offer targeted support and spinal alignment. Since the Elite’s coils are individually wrapped and reinforced around the mattress’s perimeter, you get great edge support, as well as responsiveness, without compromising on motion transfer.
Base Layer
Finally, the Bear Elite has a base of high-density support foam that helps distribute weight evenly on the entire bed above.
How Do the Policies Measure Up?
Shipping & Unboxing
Once you order your Bear Elite hybrid mattress, it’ll ship for free to anywhere in the United States (excluding Hawaii and Alaska) through FedEx. When the Bear Elite arrives at your home (likely after seven to 10 business days), you can unbox it, ideally with the help of a friend.
If you want extra help, Bear offers white-glove delivery, and they’ll pick up your old mattress too. Just note that this will likely incur a fee.
Warranty
The Bear Elite Hybrid comes with a limited lifetime warranty, which is pretty close to perfect. It means you’ll be covered from the moment you purchase the mattress and forever onward.
However, what’s covered and how much you’ll receive in compensation is prorated the longer you own the mattress. For the first ten years, you’re covered in full: Should you encounter any manufacturing defects, you will receive a refund or replacement. After the 11th year, the consumer is expected to pay anywhere from 50 to 75-percent of the current retail price to receive a replacement.
To ensure you don’t void the warranty, make sure you’re using your mattress on an appropriate foundation, base, or frame. Consider using a mattress protector to prevent accidental damage or staining, which the warranty does not cover. To make a claim on an existing warranty, you’ll need to email claims@bearmattress.com.
Trial Period & Returns
Most brands offer a sleep trial or return period for you to decide whether a mattress is right for you, and Bear is no different. For the Bear Elite mattress, this trial lasts 120 nights. This is a fairly good, albeit standard, sleep trial for online mattresses. It gives you a couple of months to break in the mattress and form an opinion.
Bear asks that you try out your mattress for at least 30 nights before initiating a refund. The process is simple: initiate one on the brand’s portal. So long as it’s within the 120-night trial period, you’ll receive a full refund. The brand itself handles the returns, so someone will be around to pick up your mattress and take it off your hands. There won’t be any fees charged for removal.
Customer Service
Bear customer service should be relatively straightforward to contact. There’s an AI chatbot in the corner of the site that can help answer easy questions or connect you with a live agent. Live agents are available through chat from Monday through Sunday, 10 am to 6 pm EST. You can also call the customer support line during the same hours, but only from Monday to Friday.

Alternatives to Consider
The Bear Elite Hybrid is just one of many mattresses we like to recommend. If you’re still unsure whether it’s the one for you, check out how it compares to the competition:
- Helix Midnight – Better for Side Sleepers
- WinkBed – Slightly Firmer Hybrid
- Nectar Classic – Cheaper Foam Option
Bear Elite Hybrid vs. Helix Midnight Mattress
Both the Bear Elite and Helix Midnight mattresses are hybrid beds, but the Helix is more affordable. The Helix’s firmness level works better for most side sleepers. That said, the Bear Elite has three firmness options and offers a bit more responsiveness for combination sleepers. The Helix Midnight has a slightly cooler feel, so it should appeal to hot sleepers.

The WinkBed mattress is another luxury hybrid that comes in multiple firmness options. But where the Bear excels in pressure relief, the WinkBed is better for more lifted support. It has a firmer feel that’s better suited to stomach sleepers and folks over 230 pounds. The Bear Elite is a bit more responsive, so it’ll appeal more to combination sleepers and sexually active folks.

The Bear Elite is a hybrid with a more responsive feel for combination sleepers and better cooling for hot sleepers. On the other hand, the Nectar Classic is an all-foam mattress with a more slow-moving feel. The Nectar also has a cooling cover built in for a crisper feel than the Bear Elite. Both beds are also good options for couples, as they offer great motion isolation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I put my Bear Elite on a box spring?

Yes. The Bear Elite’s memory foam and coil layers are made in America from nontoxic and eco-friendly materials. Additionally, the Bear Elite is CertiPUR-US-certified and GREENGUARD-certified against any toxic or environmentally unsafe emissions. Also, this bed is certified against having any fiberglass in its construction.
How long does the Bear Elite Last?
The Bear Elite is made from durable pocketed coils and has a reinforced perimeter, meaning that this bed will last longer than the average mattress’s lifespan, which is about seven years. Instead, the Bear Elite should last over 10 years, and it comes with a Lifetime warranty.
