We’re rounding up our top picks for the best California king mattresses on the market. Here’s what you need to know about each one including materials, durability, and cooling features.
You don’t need a California zip code to sleep like you’re in Beverly Hills. California king mattresses give sleepers more space and bring big comfort to bedrooms everywhere. These beds are ideal for taller sleepers because they are extra long and provide plenty of room to stretch out. That said, you don’t have to be tall to indulge in the extra real estate a Cal king provides.
Of course, bigger doesn’t automatically mean better. To find the California kings worthy of your bedroom space, our team of certified sleep science coaches, mattress experts, and sleep enthusiasts personally tested each bed on this list. We examined pressure relief, cooling, and edge support (and more) to find the best of the best.
Read on to see which models earned a spot on our list.

During testing, our mattress nerds rely on our rigorous review process to give readers like you a detailed overview of each bed’s performance. Nerd’s Pick: Helix Midnight Luxe

Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress

Product Details
Our Recommendation
The Helix Midnight Luxe is a versatile hybrid mattress that impressed our nerd crew across every category. Sleepers willing to splurge on the Luxe version of the Helix Midnight will benefit from best-in-class edge support, motion isolation, and cooling, all of which earned a 4/5 or higher during testing. We recommend this model for couples, side sleepers, and hot sleepers.
The only real weakness of the Helix Midnight Luxe is its shorter sleep trial. While 120 nights should be enough time for most shoppers to get used to their new mattress, we typically see 365-night trials on mattresses of this caliber.
How We Select the Nerd’s Pick
Our Nerd’s Pick is what we thought was the best California king mattress for the average sleeper. We considered key categories like pressure relief, edge support, and motion isolation when comparing mattresses and compiling options for this list. Based on those criteria, we believe that the Helix Midnight Luxe is the best California king mattress for most people.
What our testers say: “The pillow top is definitely providing a bulk of the cushion here, but I feel like I’m still getting support from the springs below. In other words, this is a match made in heaven for side sleepers.” – Livvi DiCicco, Certified Sleep Science Coach
Who Might Like the Helix Midnight Luxe
- Sleepers who gravitate toward the edge of the bed. Our testers were floored by how well the Helix Midnight Luxe’s edges prevented them from rolling onto the floor during our trials. They gave the Midnight Luxe a near-perfect 4.8-star score in this category.
- Hot sleepers. These sleepers should have no trouble keeping cool and comfortable, thanks to the Helix Midnight Luxe’s lightweight cover layer and breathable innerspring construction.
- Side sleepers. Across the board, our mattress testers enjoyed how the Helix Midnight Luxe cradled their hips and shoulders in the side-sleeping position.
Who Might Not Like the Helix Midnight Luxe
- Shoppers seeking a longer sleep trial to get acquainted with their new mattress might find Helix’s 120-night trial a bit restrictive compared to other brands offering a 365-night trial. If a longer sleep trial is a top priority, consider checking out the Nectar Premier Hybrid instead.
Other User Reviews
The Helix Midnight Luxe has an impressive 9,663 reviews on the Helix website and an average rating of 4.5/5. Sleepers generally enjoy its balance of cushioning and support, with one review noting that the soft cover helped with pain from spinal stenosis. That said, some negative reviews complained about damaged packages and long break-in periods.

Best Luxury California King Mattress: DreamCloud Premier Hybrid

DreamCloud Premier Hybrid Mattress

Product Details
Our Recommendation
The California King DreamCloud Premier Hybrid pairs sprawling size with a high-end, luxury feel. Shoppers looking to maximize their mattress space and comfort should add the Premier to their list of beds to consider. During testing, we gave the DreamCloud a 4/5 or higher in every category except for cooling.
Cooling earned a 3.8/5, and while our testers agree it should be comfortable for most sleepers, those prone to sweating through their sheets might need something with additional temperature-regulating features.
What our testers say: “This is fantastic for side sleepers. I am a side sleeper and I love this mattress. The bed does a great job of contouring around my shoulder and my hips feel great. I have stiff nagging hips, and this mattress relieves that pressure.” – Sosha Lewis, Editor and Certified Sleep Science Coach
Who Might Like the DreamCloud Premier Hybrid
- Sleepers with mobility concerns. Sleepers who need a surface to bear down on in the morning will appreciate the DreamCloud Premier Hybrid’s stable and supportive perimeter.
- Combination sleepers. During testing, we found that the pocketed coils in the DreamCloud’s construction made it incredibly easy to move around and toggle between sleeping positions.
- Back sleepers. People who sleep primarily on their backs should get enough lower lumbar support to keep their spines in a healthy position through the night.
Who Might Not Like the DreamCloud Premier Hybrid
- Hot sleepers. Sleepers prone to overheating at night might find that the DreamCloud’s plush surface retains more body heat than they’d like.
- Sleepers under 130 pounds. Individuals who weigh less than 130 pounds will likely find the DreamCloud too firm for comfort, especially if they have sensitive joints or sleep primarily on their side. These sleepers might be more comfortable on the soft Helix Sunset Luxe mattress.
Other User Reviews
The DreamCloud Premier Hybrid has an average score of 4.5/5 based on over 5,500 customer reviews. A lot of people appreciate its cool-to-the-touch feel and the support it offers for back sleeping. However, some reviewers were disappointed in how firm (or soft) it felt when it arrived.

Best Hybrid California King Mattress: Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid

Product Details
Our Recommendation
Many people prefer hybrid mattresses because their foam-meets-innerspring construction offers the best of both worlds: deep pressure relief, low motion transfer, and above-average responsiveness. Brooklyn Bedding’s flagship mattress is an excellent representative of this type of bed because it earned a 4/5 or higher in all three categories during testing.
That said, the Signature Hybrid underperformed in edge support and cooling during testing. While its soft upper layer provides a contouring hug, it also retains more body heat and sinks around the mattress perimeter.
What our testers say: “I really like this mattress for back sleeping. It has that balanced feel that lands right in the medium-firm range, which I think a lot of these sleepers will appreciate. My body felt evenly supported from head to toe, and my spine stayed in a nice, neutral position.” – Riley Otis, In-house mattress tester
Who Might Like the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid
- Couples. The doughy cover layer of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid traps motion and prevents it from rippling across the mattress surface, which is great news for people who share the bed with a restless partner.
- Sleepers with chronic pain. If you tend to wake up feeling sore and stiff, the pressure-relieving surface of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid could help relieve some symptoms.
- Combination sleepers. Sleepers who frequently change positions should find it easy to flip around on the Signature Hybrid thanks to its innerspring coils and medium-firm feel.
Who Might Not Like the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid
- During testing, we noticed the sides of the mattress sank more while sitting on them, which could be an issue for sleepers with mobility concerns who need a sturdy perimeter to get up in the morning.
- Hot sleepers might fare better on a hybrid model with more cooling features, like the Birch Natural mattress.
Other User Reviews
On Brooklyn Bedding’s website, its Signature Hybrid mattress has an average score of 4.7/5 based on nearly 12,000 reviews (we guess they’re doing something right). Many reviews say it helps with back pain across multiple sleeping positions. That said, some reviewers found that it was too soft for two people. There are also a handful of reviews that are critical of Brooklyn Bedding’s customer service.

Best Cooling California King Mattress: Nectar Premier Memory Foam

Nectar Premier Mattress

Product Details
Our Recommendation
Bodies that generate more heat at night need a mattress that can lower the temperature. Like many other Nectar models, the all-foam Premier is an excellent cooling mattress that should make excessive overheating a thing of the past for most sleepers. During testing, we gave it a strong 4.5/5 in the cooling category. It also earned high marks in pressure relief and motion isolation, thanks to its soft memory foam construction.
Unfortunately, the Nectar Premier fell victim to common shortcomings seen in most memory foam models. The slow-moving foams in the Premier’s construction lowered the edge support and responsiveness scores during testing.
What our testers say: “While not necessarily icy chill, I thought the cover was cool-to-the-touch. As I was lying there, I could feel the bed warming up very slightly.” – Riley Otis, mattress expert
Who Might Like the Nectar Premier
- Hot sleepers. The Nectar’s cool-to-the-touch cover made this bed a pleasure to lie on during testing.
- Side sleepers. People looking to ease tension in pressure-prone areas (including the hips, shoulders, and lower back) will likely enjoy the gentle contouring the all-foam Nectar provides.
- Couples. Restless sleepers won’t have to worry about disturbing their partners on this mattress, thanks to the motion-dampening memory foam.
Who Might Not Like the Nectar Premier
- Older adults. Sleepers with mobility concerns who rely on their bed’s perimeter to safely get up in the morning will need stronger edge support.
- Combination sleepers. If you frequently change positions at night to get comfortable, it might be challenging to do so on the slow-moving Nectar Premier mattress. For a more responsive all-foam model, check out the Leesa Original instead.
Other User Reviews
According to the Nectar website, the Premier Memory Foam model has a 4.5/5 rating based on over 10,000 reviews. Many reviewers claim that the memory foam Nectar uses is just as comfortable as the foam used by more expensive brands. On the flip side, there are a handful of negative reviews complaining about excessive sinkage.

Best California King Mattress for Side Sleepers: Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid

Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid

Product Details
Our Recommendation
Side sleepers generally benefit from a soft-yet-supportive mattress that cradles their hips and shoulders while propping up their spines in healthy alignment. The Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid mattress strikes this balance perfectly, thanks to its soft cooling cover, premium foams, and innerspring coils. Our discerning nerds awarded this bed 4 stars or more in pressure relief, edge support, and cooling.
While most sleepers who prefer a softer mattress should love the Sapira Chill Hybrid, we wouldn’t recommend it to couples who are sensitive to motion. The coils beneath the soft surface make this model feel bouncier than your average bed, meaning you might feel your partner’s every twitch on the Leesa mattress.
What our testers say: “I love this bed for side sleeping. The pillow top really adds a lot in terms of plushness and comfort. There was some nice cushioning around my hips and shoulders, which I really appreciated as someone with sensitive hips.” – Riley Otis, in-house mattress tester
Who Might Like the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid
- Side sleepers. This mattress should be a “Goldilocks” bed for most side sleepers, thanks to its pressure-relieving upper layer and supportive innerspring coils.
- Hot sleepers. While many mattress brands that use “chill,” “cooling,” or similar adjectives fail to deliver on temperature regulation, Leesa is not one of them. Our testers were very impressed with the Sapira Chill’s ability to cool things down during our trials.
- Combination sleepers. The surface of the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid essentially serves as a springboard for those who frequently change sleeping positions at night.
Who Might Not Like the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid
- Couples. Those who share their bed with a restless partner or wiggly pet will need something that isolates motion better. The Bear Elite Hybrid feels similar but does a better job of preventing motion from rippling across the surface.
Other User Reviews
The Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid has 262 reviews and an average score of 4.2/5. Most of the reviews praise it for its supportive and cool feel, while others complain about Leesa’s customer service and return process.

Best California King Mattress for Back Sleepers: WinkBed

WinkBed Mattress

Product Details
Our Recommendation
Financing Options
Financing options are available for this mattress.
When recommending the best mattresses for back sleepers, we often point to medium-firm hybrid models that offer strong corner-to-corner support and enough cushioning to fill in the space between the lumbar spine and sacrum. The Luxury Firm WinkBed provides both, which is why it’s often one of our top picks for back sleepers. Plus, it earned a 4/5 or higher in cooling and edge support during testing.
That said, just because the WinkBed might be perfect for most back sleepers doesn’t mean it’s perfect all-around. Its tufted cover layer makes it difficult for combo sleepers to change positions. Meanwhile, its innerspring coils will likely disturb couples sensitive to motion transfer.
What our testers say: “The WinkBed is an excellent choice for back sleepers. In this position, I was able to achieve proper spinal alignment. My hips and shoulders were level and my lumbar region was cushioned nicely. I felt really comfortable and didn’t notice any pressure building anywhere.” – Riley Otis, in-house mattress tester
Who Might Like the WinkBed
- Back sleepers. Sleepers who primarily rest on their backs at night need a balance of lumbar support and pressure relief, and the WinkBed optimizes both.
- Older adults and sleepers with mobility concerns. Sleepers who rely on strong edge support for easier movement and more usable sleeping space.
Who Might Not Like the WinkBed
- Combination sleepers may find the WinkBed’s soft, tufted surface harder to move around on.
- Couples sensitive to motion transfer who are frequently bothered by their one partner tossing and turning will need something with stronger motion isolation, like the Nolah Evolution.
Other User Reviews
With over 9,000 reviews and an average customer rating of 4.8/5, sleepers seem to love the WinkBed for its ability to relieve joint pain. Still, some reviewers found that the WinkBed model they received was too firm (or too soft) and had to exchange it for a different one.

Best California King Mattress for Combination Sleepers: Saatva Classic

Saatva Classic

Product Details
Our Recommendation
The Luxury Firm Saatva Classic is the perfect mattress for combination sleepers who are sick of feeling like they are sinking in quicksand every night. Saatva’s flagship mattress has two layers of innerspring coils for twice the support and bounce (both of which are essential for combination sleepers). The Saatva earned 4 stars or more in edge support, cooling, and responsiveness.
Unsurprisingly, however, that extra bounce comes at the cost of motion isolation. If you’re a stationary sleeper who shares the bed with a combination sleeper, you will feel every move they make. The extra firm feel of the Saatva may also alienate sleepers under 130 pounds and strict side sleepers, especially those with existing joint pain.
What our testers say: “The Saatva is highly responsive. I had no trouble at all switching from my back to my side to my stomach. It was also very easy to hop in and out of bed and roll from one side of the mattress to the other. I think this is pretty much the gold standard for combo sleepers.” – Kenny Timper, senior writer and Certified Sleep Science Coach
Who Might Like the Saatva Classic
- Back and stomach sleepers will get plenty of lower body support on the Saatva Classic to keep their spines in a healthy, neutral position.
- Combination sleepers. Sleepers who frequently change positions to get comfortable will find it incredibly easy to do so on the Saatva. Our team compared its bounciness to a trampoline during testing.
- Hot sleepers. While the plush Euro pillow-top cover absorbs some heat, the two coil layers work overtime to facilitate airflow and keep things cool and comfortable.
Who Might Not Like the Saatva Classic
- Couples. If your partner isn’t exactly thrilled about you being a combination sleeper, they will be even less so on this trampoline-like mattress. They will likely feel all of your movements on their side of the bed.
- Sleepers under 130 pounds and strict side sleepers. The Saatva is much too firm for sleepers in these categories. That said, the Saatva Rx is a softer alternative from the brand that’s perfect for these sleepers (especially if they have sensitive joints or deal with chronic pain).
Other User Reviews
On the Saatva website, the Saatva Classic mattress scored a 4.8 out of 5 stars from 6,406 reviews. The reviews praise the customer support and comfort levels of the mattress. However, complaints call out sagging in the mattress after only a year and the need for early replacement.

Best California King Mattress for Budget Shoppers: Silk & Snow Hybrid

Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress

Product Details
Our Recommendation
For how inexpensive this mattress-in-a-box is (often well under $1,200 for a California King), the Silk & Snow Hybrid delivers stellar performance. This medium-firm hybrid model scored 4/5 or higher in nearly every category, making it a solid option for most shoppers working with a tight budget.
That said, we wouldn’t recommend it to sleepers with mobility concerns or those who roll toward the edge of the bed at night. It earned its lowest score in the edge support category when our testers noticed that its perimeter sank in quite a bit while sitting and lying on its sides.
What our testers say: “I didn’t feel this mattress heating up at all. It kept a cool temperature throughout and should be comfortable for hot sleepers.” – Our in-house mattress tester
Who Might Like the Silk & Snow Hybrid
- Budget shoppers. You would be hard-pressed to find a high-performing mattress for less than this. The council of nerds agrees: the Silk & Snow Hybrid punches well above its weight.
- Hot sleepers. Our testing team was also quite impressed with the Silk & Snow Hybrid’s cooling. It seems the “snow” isn’t just for show.
- Couples. Motion isolation was the real star of the show, earning a 4.7/5 from our nerds. When partnered up on the mattress, our testers could not detect what the other person was doing on their side of the bed.
Who Might Not Like the Silk & Snow Hybrid
- Older adults and sleepers with mobility concerns. Sleepers in these categories will need something with stronger edge support, like the similarly affordable all-foam Nectar Classic mattress.
Other User Reviews
The Silk & Snow Hybrid has 4,076 reviews and an average score of 4.5/5. The reviews are overwhelmingly positive, with most of them saying it seamlessly balances luxury and support. However, some critical reviewers weren’t so pleased with its temperature regulation and long-term durability.
Our Silk & Snow Hybrid review is coming soon.
How We Chose the Best California King Mattresses
A California king gives you plenty of room to stretch out, but size alone doesn’t make a mattress comfortable. Our testing team focused on several performance categories that can make a big difference in how a mattress feels night after night. In particular, we considered edge support, pressure relief, and cooling.
Edge Support
Edge support refers to how well a mattress maintains its shape around its sides and corners. A strong perimeter is especially important on a large mattress because it maximizes the usable sleeping surface. More bed means that you (and your partner or pet) can spread out without feeling like you might roll off. Edge support can also be a good indicator of durability, as sturdy sides are less likely to sag over time.
We test edge support by sitting and lying along the perimeter of each mattress to see how stable it feels beneath us. We also place weights along the edge to simulate sleepers of different body weights, then measure how much the mattress sinks under the added pressure. Less compression generally means better edge support.
Pressure Relief
Pressure relief describes how well a mattress distributes your body weight and cushions areas prone to pressure buildup. What good pressure relief looks like can depend on your sleeping position.
Back sleepers typically need a supportive surface that helps maintain a neutral spine while providing enough cushioning around the lower back. Side sleepers usually need more contouring around the shoulders and hips, which bear more weight in this position.
When assessing pressure relief, our more technical nerds use a specialized pressure-mapping mat (or pressure map) that creates a color-coded image showing where pressure accumulates as a tester lies on the mattress. Blue and green indicate lower pressure, while orange and red show areas of greater pressure buildup. We also have testers of different sizes and sleeping preferences try each mattress and tell us how comfortable and supported they feel.
Cooling
A mattress that traps body heat can make all that California real estate feel like you’ve just stepped into a vacation home with a broken air conditioning unit. Cooling refers to how effectively a mattress facilitates airflow, regulates temperature, and prevents excess heat from building up around the sleeper. Breathable covers, coils, latex, and specialty cooling foams can all influence temperature regulation.
To test cooling, we record the mattress’s surface temperature with a thermal gun before lying on it for several minutes. We then take another temperature reading and calculate how much the surface warmed up. Naturally, a smaller temperature increase indicates better cooling performance.
What Else Should You Consider When Buying a California King Mattress?
Performance matters, but there are additional practical considerations before investing in a California king mattress. You’ll want to be sure that your new mattress will fit your room and your budget.
Room Size
A standard California king mattress measures 72 inches wide by 84 inches long. That makes it 4 inches narrower and 4 inches longer than a standard king, making the California king particularly appealing to taller sleepers who want extra legroom.
However, you’ll also need enough space around the bed to comfortably walk, open doors and drawers, and fit other bedroom furniture.
Price
California king mattresses are among the largest standard mattress sizes, so they typically cost more than smaller options from the same brand. Don’t forget to factor in the cost of a compatible bed frame (or box spring), foundation, sheets, mattress protector, and other accessories, especially since standard king bedding generally won’t fit a California king.

California King Mattress FAQ
What are the dimensions of a California king mattress?
A standard California king mattress measures 72 inches wide by 84 inches long. That extra length makes it a popular option for taller sleepers who want more room to stretch out.
Is a California king bigger than a king?
A California king is 4 inches longer but 4 inches narrower than a standard king. Although the two are similar in overall size, a standard king has slightly more surface area.
What is a split California king?
A split California king consists of two separate mattress sections that combine to form a 72-by-84-inch sleeping surface. This setup allows couples to customize each side of the bed and is especially useful with adjustable bases.
What is the best California king size mattress?
Our pick for the best California king-size bed is the Helix Midnight Luxe. This luxury hybrid offers strong pressure relief, cooling, and edge support, making it a good fit for a variety of sleepers.
How much should I pay for a California king mattress?
California king mattresses can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars. Around $1,000 is a good starting point for a quality Cal king mattress. Models $2,000 or higher often fall into the luxury category and come with additional features, such as gel memory foam, high-density foam, and zoned support.
