Is the Hush Mattress for You?

Who’s Going to Love the Hush Mattress

  • All body types—lightweight (< 130 lbs), average-weight (130–230 lbs), and heavyweight (> 230 lbs)
  • Back sleepers and Lightweight stomach sleepers
  • Average-weight and heavyweight side sleepers
  • Hot sleepers

Who Should Steer Clear of the Hush Mattress

  • Average-weight and heavyweight stomach sleepers—instead, choose a firm mattress with minimal sinkage, like the Brooklyn Bedding Plank mattress.
  • Budget shoppers—instead, check out the Helix Midnight mattress, which has a similar feel for a lower price.
  • Fans of soft mattresses—instead of a medium-firm mattress like the Hush, go with something distinctly plush, like the Casper Wave Hybrid mattress.

Hush Mattress Firmness and Feel

Hush Mattress Firmness

At Mattress Nerd, we rate mattresses on a 1–10 firmness scale, with 10 being as firm as possible. The Hush mattress falls at a 6/10, or medium-firm. Mattresses with a medium-firmness have a “Goldilocks” firmness level, since they’re not too soft and not too firm. Typically, we recommend medium-firm beds to back sleepers, average-weight or heavier side sleepers, and lightweight to average-weight stomach sleepers.

What Does the Hush Feel Like?

The Hush has a balanced feel that pairs the cozy plushness of foam with the buoyancy and support of coils. As a pillowtop mattress, the Hush quite literally feels like lying on a bed of pillows. The support coils beneath are noticeably firm, but they compress under weight, giving the mattress enough sinkage to keep side sleepers comfortable.

Support and Pressure Relief by Sleeping Position

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers are easy to please—they need a supportive mattress with a little bit of padding for comfort. The Hush mattress fits this bill. The support of the coils keeps your spine aligned, while the pillow top cushions your curves. This is true for all body types, including lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight sleepers.

For more of our top picks, see the best mattresses for back sleepers.

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers need a mattress that allows for deep pressure point cushioning and spinal support. The Hush has a firm coil base that has enough give to compress under wider curves like shoulders and hips. The plush pillow top is soft and cushioning, which prevents too much weight from resting on wider parts of the body.

We tested the Hush using a pressure map, and found that lightweight side sleepers may experience pressure buildup in the shoulders, but average-weight and heavyweight side sleepers should get enough pressure relief around trouble areas.

For maximum pressure relief, check out the best mattresses for side sleepers.

Stomach Sleepers

For stomach sleepers to have a good sleeping posture, they need a firmer mattress. The Hush has a supportive base layer, but the pillow top may allow the hips of average-weight and heavyweight stomach sleepers to dip, which can cause lower back strain. Lightweight stomach sleepers won’t sink as far into the mattress, so they should be fine.

For a roundup of our favorite firm, supportive beds, see the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.

Combination Sleepers

The best mattresses for combination sleepers are responsive, meaning they quickly adjust to your movements. The Hush mattress is responsive, though memory foam in the pillow top may cause a little drag time.

The Hush is the best fit for lightweight back and stomach sleepers and average-weight or heavyweight back and side sleepers.

Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  5 4 3
Average-weight (130–230 lbs): 5 3 5
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  4 2 4

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Hush Mattress Performance

Is the Hush Mattress Cooling?

The Hush mattress has a mix of cooling and heat-absorbing materials that cause it to have a neutral temperature profile. It’s not the most cooling mattress we’ve tested, but it’s not likely to cause the average sleeper to wake up drenched in sweat.

The Hush is topped with memory foam, which traps body heat, but the coil base layer allows hot air to travel out of the mattress. These two elements balance each other out. For an extra measure of cooling, the Hush mattress features Phase Change Materials in its cover—materials that absorb or release heat, depending on the temperature of the mattress surface.

Edge Support

If you like to spread out across your bed or use the edges to get ready in the morning, you’ll want a mattress with good edge support. The Hush has supportive coils and a dense foam encasement that give it stability around the edges. We notice a little sinkage when sitting on the sides of the bed, but otherwise give the Hush a thumbs up in this category.

Responsiveness

Responsiveness is the measure of how easy it is to move around on a mattress. Memory foam is notoriously slow to respond, while coils spring right back to their original shape when weight is removed.

The Hush mattress has a balance of both foams and coils, so we give it an above average score in this category. You shouldn’t have a hard time moving around on the mattress surface, but you may notice some lag from the memory foam in the pillow top.

Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?

If you share your bed, you’ll want a mattress that can prevent movement on one side of the bed from affecting the other side. This is a common problem with innerspring mattresses, but those with dense foams and individual coils do a better job of preventing motion transfer. The Hush mattress didn’t do a great job of isolating motion—despite a memory foam top layer and individual coils—so it’s not the best mattress for couples concerned about movement.

Noise

We didn’t notice any noise coming from the Hush mattress. If you hear any squeaking, it may be coming from your bed frame.

Pain Relief

The medium-firm feel and moderate pressure relief of the Hush are best at minimizing pain for back sleepers with lower back pain. The pillow top keeps your backside cushioned, while the supportive coils keep your spine aligned.

Stomach sleepers may want to opt for a firmer mattress, since they need a relatively flat surface to keep their lower back from arching uncomfortably out of alignment. Side sleepers over 130 lbs should experience relief from shoulder or hip pain on the Hush.

Sex

The Hush is a good mattress for sex, since it has the bounce and breathability of coils. It’s also easy to move around on, though the memory foam pillow top may take a second to adjust to changes in your position on the mattress surface.

Off-Gassing

We noticed a strong off-gassing odor coming from our Hush mattress when we cut away the plastic packaging. Off-gassing is an odor caused by chemicals used in manufacturing when they’re released from the compressed foam.

This mostly happens in the factory, but some “new mattress smell” gets trapped when the mattress is packaged. It’s similar to the way a freshly painted room smells, and like paint when it dries, off-gassing dissipates after a few hours (max a few days).

Hush uses CertiPUR-US certified foams, so they’re free of harmful chemicals and materials like heavy metals and formaldehyde. They also pass tests for low VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions. Bottom line? You don’t need to worry about any off-gassing you smell since it’s non-toxic and temporary.

Durability

Pillowtop mattresses are among the most durable available, so you can expect the Hush mattress to last you at least seven or eight years, possibly a whole decade. The only issue you may encounter is permanent body impressions forming in the foam pillow top. If you believe your mattress is defective during the first 10 years, you may be eligible for a replacement mattress under the warranty.

Hush Mattress Construction: What’s it made of?

The Hush is a pillowtop mattress, meaning it’s a coil-based mattress with a plush, “pillowy” topper attached at the top. With a medium-firmness and 13” height, the Hush is a good mattress for all body types and sleeping positions.

Premium Mattress Cover: The Hush is wrapped in a cooling fabric mattress cover made of polyester and spandex. The yarns used in the fabric are woven with Phase Change Materials, which absorb excess body heat and release the heat when the surface temperature gets too cool.

Foam Pillow Top: The top layer of the mattress is a pillow top with two foam layers. The first is gel- and graphite-infused memory foam. Gel and graphite are used to regulate temperature, and memory foam improves spinal alignment (i.e. sleeping posture). An additional layer of polyfoam adds extra cushion.

Coil System: The bulk of the mattress is made of high quality spring coils. This layer gives the mattress its firm support, airflow, and bounce. It also improves the durability of the bed.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

Hush offers free next-day shipping to addresses in the U.S. That means your new mattress will ship one (max two) days after placing your order. It takes five to seven business days for the mattress to be delivered. It comes compressed and rolled in a box

Hush doesn’t offer in-home setup and old mattress removal. You’ll need to remove the mattress from the box, unroll it on your foundation, box spring, or adjustable bed frame, remove the packaging, and let it rise.

It took us one minute and 52 seconds to set up our Hush mattress. The only negative was a strong off-gassing odor that took several hours to clear out.

Warranty

Hush covers their mattress with a 10-year warranty for the original owner of the mattress. The warranty enables you to make a claim if your mattress develops any defects that aren’t related to improper use of the mattress.

It is possible to void a mattress warranty. Consider using a mattress protector and make sure that you have a supportive enough bed frame. For example, if using a slatted bed, make sure the slats are no more than 3” apart. Also, use center support for Queen-size and King-size mattresses.

Trial Period & Returns

There isn’t a perfect mattress on the market, but some are better than others at meeting your needs. If you aren’t getting the best sleep on the Hush mattress after 30 days, you can return it during the 100-night sleep trial for a full refund. Just email hello@hush.ca, and they’ll arrange for it to be picked up and donated or disposed of.

Note: Any Hush products purchased through third-party retailers like Amazon may have a different trial period and return policy.

Addressing Hush Mattress Complaints

Too Firm

A couple of customers said that the Hush mattress was firmer than they expected, which caused them to consider returning it. Hush advertises its flagship mattress as a balance of softness and firmness—and we agree—but comfort and firmness are subjective. Remember you can return the mattress during the trial period window if it’s too firm for comfort.

Slow Customer Service

According to customer reviews, it can take a while to hear back from the Hush customer service team. Unlike many online mattress companies, Hush doesn’t have the capacity to respond to customers in real time via their online chat function, which is available 8AM-10PM EST. We had to wait around an hour to get a response to our question.

You can also email the company at support@hushblankets.com, and Hush commits to responding within 24 hours. They don’t offer support via phone at this time. Prepare to wait a little longer for support from Hush than you would from more established bed-ina-box brands.

The Haven Lux Hybrid is another pillowtop mattress, though it uses plant-based latex and foam in its topper instead of memory foam and polyfoam. The Haven also has two coil systems, compared with one in the Hush, which improves motion isolation for couples.

With the Haven, you have the option to choose between firm coils and coils that have extra sinkage near your hips. In contrast, the Haven comes in one firmness: medium-firm. The Hush is more expensive, though both mattresses come with a 100-night trial period, 10-year warranty, and free shipping and returns.

Hush vs. Silk & Snow

This mattress is no longer available for purchase. To help you find your next mattress, check out our list of the best mattresses available on the market now.

Silk & Snow is also a Canadian bedding company, though their flagship bed is a memory foam mattress. The original Silk & Snow mattress has a medium-firm feel, but the high-density support foam base doesn’t allow as much sinkage as coils. For that reason, the Hush is a little better for side sleepers and those looking for pressure relief.

If budget is your main concern, the Silk & Snow costs around half of what the Hush costs. It’s not as durable as the Hush, but it comes with a longer warranty period (15 years vs. 10 years). Both mattresses include a 100-night sleep trial, free shipping, and free returns.

See our full Silk & Snow Mattress Review for more information.

Hush vs. Douglas

This mattress is no longer available for purchase. To help you find your next mattress, check out our list of the best mattresses available on the market now.

Douglas is another Canadian bed-ina-box mattress brand, and unlike Hush, they only sell their mattress to customers who live in Canada. The other main difference is that the Douglas mattress is made entirely of foam, which reduces motion transfer, but causes it to sleep hotter than a mattress with coils.

Generally, the Hush is more pressure-relieving and supportive, though either bed will work well for average-sized back or side sleepers. Hot sleepers should go with the Hush. The Douglas costs hundreds of dollars less than the Hush, so if you live in Canada, it’s the better budget buy.

See our full Douglas Mattress Review for more information.

Hush Mattress FAQs

What Makes the Hush Mattress Different?

Hush highlights that their mattress is higher end and more durable than other bed-ina-box mattresses available online, primarily because it’s made with coils and foam instead of just foam. Mattresses with coils are more durable than all-foam mattresses, though the Hush isn’t the only hybrid mattress with coils available online.

How Long Until I Can Sleep On the Hush?

It took only a few minutes for our Hush mattress to inflate to its full shape; however, the off-gassing smell coming from the foam layers deterred us from wanting to sleep on it right away. We recommend giving your Hush 24–48 hours to air out before adding your sheets.

How Do I Clean the Hush Mattress?

Hush recommends using a baking soda and vinegar combo to spot clean any stains on the Hush mattress. They say you should not use a detergent, since that could ruin the cooling material in the cover. We suggest using a waterproof mattress protector to prevent stains in the first place.

The Nerd’s Take: What’s the Bottom Line?

The Hush is a medium-firm pillowtop mattress that’s both pressure-relieving and supportive. It stays at a comfortable neutral temperature, though the memory foam in the pillow top may retain some heat. The feel and support level are best for back and side sleepers and lightweight stomach sleepers.

Choose this mattress over others if: you like the luxurious feel of a hotel mattress, want a little memory foam but easily overheat, and have a budget in the $1,000–$2,000 range. You’ll have 100 days to decide whether or not the Hush helps you get a good night’s sleep.
